Fullmetal Alchemist

I making this thread for my favorite TV show at the moment, Fullmetal Alchemist. I started watching this show a few weeks ago and I watched all 51 episodes and the movie in about 5 days. That should tell you how great the show is. :D

For those of you who don't know the show here's a summary:

After losing their mother, Alphonse and Edward Elric attempt to bring her back using the forbidden science of human alchemy. However, alchemy operates on the theory of equivalent trade, and breaking the human alchemy taboo carries a heavy price. Ed loses his leg, and Al loses his body. Ed is able to seal Al's soul inside of a huge suit of armor, at the cost of his arm. Years later, Ed (now with two mechanical limbs) and Al (still trapped in the armor) leave their childhood home, each brother concerned with the other's happiness. Ed, who has a natural talent and skill for alchemy, becomes nationally certified and is soon known everywhere as the "Fullmetal Alchemist." Their true objective is to search for any information on the fabled Philosopher's Stone, hoping it will allow them to regain their old bodies. All of their hopes rest with this mythical stone, which may not even exist at all. However, the brothers soon learn that they are not the only ones after the powerful stone.
- summary from animenewsnetwork

If you're interested in the show you can watch it on youtube.com. Just type 'full metal alchemist' in the search box.

Also if this is a repeat thread, forgive me. I searched for something like this and nothing came up.

There was one but it's dead for some time now. It's a shame though because it's a really good show.

Same happend with me. All episodes and movie in couple of days. I didn't eat and didn't sleep.

But I like manga more than anime. I started with anime and after I swithed to manga and it's great. You have to see those face reactions of Ed in manga they are really funny they make me lol every time.

Anywey check manga out you'll like it.

I love the faces Ed makes too!

I think you're a little behind in the manga alpacas4eva Even in Australia the manga is much further  start saving!

I'm glad someone started this thread up again. There was one a little while ago that did in fact die out as spiritedaway mentioned. I think it stopped at like sixty something posts...

It's my absolute favourite series of all time. I haven't yet seen the movie as it's not out to buy in Australia until about mid-feb and volume 13 hasnt come out yet but I've seen the entire series. I don't think any other show has made me think about human nature more than this one has. It was just absolutely beautifully written. The final episodes were among the best and never get boring. The emotion is just so raw and inspiring!

My favourite character besides the Ed and Hohenhiem would have to be Lust - she wasn't so bad in the end...

I haven't read the manga yet though I want to because its supposed to be completely different from the show because of course the show finished and the manga is still continuing - it's still going as far as I know monthly.

I love reading FMA fanfiction - some of the writers are really creative out there

I like this anime and I love the manga. I'd seen all episodes and the movie as well. I'm kinda meh about the whole thing and the only saving grace IMO was Edward and Al Elric and Roy Mustang:D.

I just wish that the release of the manga can be a little quicker. I'd only read until vol. 8 and that was from an online site.

I love Fullmetal Alchemist! I haven't watched much of the anime, unfortunately - I was recording it to my DV-R from Adult Swim, but I got super busy, and the episodes starting piling up, so I finally had to stop watching it, but I'm totally going to rent the DVDs because it's so awesome!

Snapegirl, yeah, isn't the music good? The theme songs are great, and the music played during the episodes themselves is really good, too (I guess you would call that the score?). I was really surprised, being a Sailor Moon veteran, at how un-cheesy the music was.

I would love a CD of all the songs, I tried to find it once at a store with other anime theme song CD, but they didn't have anything. I guess I'll just have to try harder!
Yeah, the music is surprising un-cheesy. I've watched some anime where I was practically crying from laughing so hard at the music.

I know what you guys mean about the songs - they're just beautiful. *smirks* I have a box set for volume ten on layby and it comes with the 3rd sountrack - heaps of songs including the beginning and ending theme songs for seasons 3 and 4! Can't wait to pick it up :) hopefully within the next week!!!!

The soundtracks are pretty hard to come by though - I'd suggest Ebay but they're quite expensive. I was lucky that the soundtrack came with it - though I had to pre-order at my local DVD store.

My favourite theme songs would have to be the beginning one from season four and 'ready steady go' which was the theme song beginning for season two!

Its a mean anime! I just don't like the end to much. I really hope the bring no2 out where the two brothers save each other.

Did you know the 7 Homocules (can't remember the correct name) was the 7 deadly sins?
Gluttomy
Greed
Sloth
Lust
Pride

I love FMA!! I saw most of the episodes of the anime on YouTube and the rest on AdultSwim. I've only read a couple chapters of the manga, though. My favourite character is Hawkeye. She totally kicks Roy's *** at everything. Plus, the voice actor for her in the English dub edition and I have the same first name!
I like Roy, too. He's funny and I like his flame alchemy, especially in "Flame vs. Fullmetal".
I also like Hughes, he's pretty cool. I was sooo sad when he died!! I started crying when I was watching the funeral scene!!
I also liked the movie, although it was slightly disappointing. I think the show's better.

I'm pretty sure that's because the anime's done, isn't it? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I've got to say, this is my favorite manga and anime because the storyline is so engrossing. I mean, it makes you think "Is equivilent exchange real?" "Is life just random or is it planned by God?" I like philosophical stuff. :)

Just a question for all y'all: What's your favorite line(s) or convos from the anime (I'm just curious)? Here's mine:

Hughes: Hey, I've got a message from Roy.
Ed: You mean the Coloniel?
Hughes: He said, "Dont' die under my command, you're enough of a pain without the paperwork." That was it.
Ed: Tell him fine, there's no way I'm dying before you do, you morally bankrupt Coloniel with a god complex.

The characters I like are Ed (this is more of a LOVE) and Roy.

I also love the opening songs of FMA, particularly "Ready, Steady, Go" and "Rewrite". If I'm not mistaken, the guys who sang "Rewrite" also sang an opening song of Naruto.

There's a fullmetal alchemist thread? Sweet!

FMA manga > FMA anime by far. But the anime is still ok, not too fond of the ending though, and the movie, I'm sorry to say it, sucked. It was like everything I didn't like about the ending times two.

FMA is a great show. It has its high and low points, but it's still very entertaining. The manga is even better, IMO. I prefer it because has a wider story, and covers a bigger subplot in what I really the anime for - the military characters and that side of the story. Can't say I liked Ed much as the main character.

Quite a few people have written crossover fanfictions between Harry Potter and Fullmetal Alchemist. They're a tricky thing to pull of considering the timeline (HP being set in the '90s, FMA circa 1915), but I'd like to read a really good one. And of course we have the fact that both Arakawa and Rowling used the story of the Philosopher's Stone. In totally different ways, mind you, but its the main thing people mention when they compare the two series.

I love Fullmetal Alchemist! I agree with darkchild, however; the manga is x10 better than the anime. Better plot, characterization, characters (Ling and Ran Fan are a lot cooler than the Tringham brothers and Psiren), and it's just better in general.

This isn't to say I didn't like the anime; I adored it, but after I finished watching it and was introduced into the manga I realized how little sense the plot made after the Greed arc. And the MOVIE - well, don't get me started on the movie. :p

I'm eagerly awaiting the released of chapter 72. I think there's going to be a RoyAi scene in this chapter

Go to ZOMGFTA.com and you can download the scanlations. :) Or you can go to readmanga.com and read it on the internet (they only go up to chapter 67, though).

The manga is amazing. It's a lot better than the anime and definitely worth a look at. It starts out rather slow, but it picks up the pace when Ling is introduced and onward. ;)

EDIT: Pfft, sorry, I didn't read your last sentence when I posted that. Sorry. Anyway, you could probably buy them on the internet easily - in America, VIZ Media has translated and released up to volume 13 (so up to chapter 54).

I used to watch Fullmetal Alchemist religious on Adult Swim. After its completion, I went into a withdrawl. Then my friend, who is a bigger fan than me, showed me the unedited version and that was a shock. They edited out a lot of violence and blood. Which makes me mad, because violence and gore is the best part.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a fantasic anime but I don't know how to put in words why I feel that way. I was drawn in by the first episode. It was one of the first series I rented and then I decided to buy it. I also bought the movie although I don't think it is as good as the series but it does tie up some things. Fullmetal Alchemist thread! Can we discuss manga here as well as anime? I don't see a manga FMA thread anywhere in the manga forum...

Anyways, I love this anime (and manga), The anime has lovely voices, and I absolutely love Ed's japanese voice especially because the voice actor also does Hitsugaya from Bleach. But the english actors are pretty good too.

My favorite characters would defenitely have to be Ed, Roy, Riza, Greed and Greelin, Mei Chan, an Ran Fan. Second up is Winry, Al, and Olivia Armstrong. I think Xiao Mei (manga panda) is the best character of all, though.

I honestly do prefer the manga above the anime, though. I think you get more character depth and it's much darker. I still do love the anime, but more like a really good fan fiction :p
Plus, the Xing peoples rock the socks off all the other characters.

I love FMA :) I got into the manga first and then bought the first two special box editions of the anime which is great too :) IMO the manga is better because you get more back story but the anime is pretty decent too :tu:

I'd suggest to keeping talk to the anime (but making comparisons for example is ok) because there's a manga thread in the 'fiction' part of the boards :)

Oh wow, has anyone seen the new episode? HOLY COW, IT'S AWESOME. I'm so glad they're starting over instead of trying to continue from the other series. Being a big fan of the manga, (though the anime was pretty good), I'm uber-excited. The music especially was awesome, and the animation was pretty sweet as well. I did feel it was a bit crammed with character introduction, but that's fine with me. The old jokes are back, and so's the old gang. We're ready for some sweet action sequences, and heart-rending scenes, not to mention some epic surprises.

I absolutely loved it, the opening in particular (young Hohenheim ftw), and the music following the short scene where Ed transmuted Al's suit of armor. Isaac was a interesting enough character and Elicia is so cute, makes me sad really. I also like how Al was potrayed, that he protected Ed and actually took some initiative of his own instead of just following his brother around.
Not too sure about those thought bubbles that appeared now and then though, they felt a bit out of place. Oh, and that guy's voice when they cut to commercial "fullmetal alllllchemist", the hell, I almost died laughing, is he going to say it like that each episode?

Oh I know! What was up with that dude? Those poor Japanese people, random english person right in the middle. I almost fell out of my chair I was like 'Wait..I understand what he's saying...'

Young Hoenheim was awesome. I loved the focus on him in the intro song, makes me all happy for the stuff coming up. I was surprised that they got straight into foreshadowing, but I'm not complaining. The entire episode I was like, 'Wait! That could totally foreshadow this! And that could foreshadow that!'

Elicia...I admit, a few tears leaked out pretty much the second Hughes arrived on screen. And then some more when they got to his house. Al was amazing, he sounds so young in that suit of armor. I normally read the manga, so it's a bit of a shock when I watch the anime, and realize, wow, he is really young. It's just something that I don't always get in the manga, so it's always nice in the anime to be reminded of that.

Ah, yes! New episode was amazing, as to be expected. Should I start putting stuff in spoiler tags? I will for now, just to be safe.

I kind of liked it better than the last series's episode concerning this stuff. It was actually much more heartbreaking, in my opinion. The way Ed was screaming in the scene where he and Al try to bring back their mother, I nearly burst into tears.
They seem to have kept the random english dude in the middle. xD That was like the one funny part. The rest I was just anticipating the conclusion and stuff, so it was hard to laugh at the funny parts. Ahh, so amazing...

It was soooo amazing. And now I feel obliged to put spoiler tags just because you did, here we go.

It looked creepier, the way Al disintegrated, like he really was dissolving. And I loved the Truth! I was wondering what kind of voice he'd have, it fit him perfectly. Well, thinking about it I pretty much loved everything; Roy, Bradley, Hawkeye and Winry, the scene with Ed in the wheelchair by the river, the music...some things were left out though, like Ed and Roy's conversation after the alchemy exam.

I did kinda miss Ed and Roy's conversation after the exam, but I guess it was okay. And, you know, Ed's eyes when he's in that wheelchair. So devoid of expression or life-and then at the end, when they are like, practically on fire.

Neeeewwwww Episooooode!!!! The reason I'm putting in spoiler tags is because I use a site that updates before the official funimation release, and I don't want to spoil anyone waiting for that one. Just saying.

So, I loved the new spin on the Lior stuff! The big 'reveal' of Ed's automail was kinda ruined because of the preceding episodes, but since I already knew it anyway, it didn't really matter. (When I first saw it, in the manga, though, I was totally like *** OMG. So newcomers might not quite get that amazing thrill of shock when he pulls of his jacket and looks all like 'I was an idiot, and now look what I have to live with.' in a totally serious way that is also amazingly cool.
I'm so scared for next week, though. I don't know if I can handle Nina and Alexander dying again. I'll probably sob my eyes out, so I should grab a box of tissues next time we go shopping. And another box for Hughes. And another for Martel.

New episode....honestly the real introduction to the future that awaits. If you thought them trying to resurrect their mom was horribly sad, this is ten times worse.

I cried. A lot. I always cry when I read this chapter and I cried for the episode. This episode is just freakishly horrible and heartbreaking. Shou Tucker is one hateful person, and his daughter did not deserve to have a cowardly, idiot man as a father.
I've always felt, with this part of the story, that it's the real entrance to the action, to the plot that awaits. Lior is the prelude, their background is a flashback (often set at different points in the story, it's a different spot for the manga, and both anime), and this is the first scene. It sets everything up, and smacks you in the face with one of the most tense and terrible exchanges ever-between Ed and Tucker right before all is revealed.
So, yeah...*moment of silence for Nina and Alexander*

What a truly glorious weekend this was, both an episode and a chapter, I'm in fullmetal heaven.

The anime keeps getting better and better. The Nina episode was so wonderful and so sad. The moment she opened the door looking all cute and cheerful I was like awww T T. I must have seen this freaking episode a hundred times. Well, maybe not that many but, point is, it still gets me every time. And I agree, we've had the introduction, it's now the story starts for real.

The Scar ep. was good as well. Ed looked really...frail in that one, didn't he? Oh, well, Al protected him again XD I must admit, I like it when he do that, more scenes like that, please. I wish they had kept the scar introduction scene like it was in the manga though. With the guard calling out to Ed. And getting his head squished.

Episode six.
They cut some of my favorite parts :(.
But I liked it anyway. Absolutely loved the scene with Ed and Winry when she was working on his automail. "Get out!"

Capter 95 Manga spoilers. And I do mean spoilers.
The Armstrongs kick ***! I loved how Olivia was ordering them around and took charge of the situation.
I do feel Arakawa is exaggerating the whole Roy and Envy thing a bit though. Roy still wanted him dead anyway, just as much as before. Would it really have mattered that much if he had been the one to kill him? It's not like he would've turned into Scar v2.0 or anything, two completely different situations.

But it was a nice ending for Envy. As much as I like him, it was about time.

Fullmetal Alchemist is definitely my favorite anime ever...but actually I am very disappointed so far in what I've seen of the remake. It moves too fast, and it doesn't have the beauty that the first one did. But I'm waiting to make a final judgment until Lin comes in...

That episode always gets me. I actually found it more powerful in the manga. I remember I was horrified especially the first time I read it :(

I recently got my boyfriend into anime and along with Death Note and Hellsing, Fullmetal Alchemist is his right up there as one of his favourites :D Gives me an excuse (yeah as if I need one ) to watch it all again. Such a wonderful series.

Reader, when you say 'new episode' what do you mean? Isn't that a very old episode? (its on the first or second dvd).

Watching the episodes again I have a new found appreciation for how awesome Roy is :D

I've got no problem with the pacing at all. Then again I didn't like the first one very much, it was too angsty. Especially Ed, he was angsty in like every episode and everything was drawn out and way over the top. So far those, the angsty parts, like when Al doubt his humanity, are handled much better imo. The same goes for the fighting scenes, more fluent and so much better this time around.

Oh, I agree completely as far as Al goes...so nice to see his whole freaking-out about whether he's human or not put into one episode instead of being dragged out across three. That really bothers me in the first one.

As for the rest, though, I would disagree...the old anime was much more angsty, but I didn't feel like it was over the top. In fact, I feel that this anime is a little more over the top, with the fast pace (at epsiode 9, we're where the old anime was after 23 episodes...) and the fighting scenes and all the "What? YOU'RE the full metal alchemist??!?" jokes. But I haven't seen the entire thing, so...

I guess we just disagree on anime styles.

The short jokes are getting a bit redundant, sure, I wouldn't mind if the humor was toned down a notch. But the pacing...I've seen a lot of people complaining that they are moving too fast, and I'll admit there have been some instances where I've felt the same (like when they cut the scene with Lust and Dr Marco, not happy with that one, and they really should have saved the investigation of Hughes' murder to the next episode and let funeral end this one), but all in all I've got no problem with it. I guess I just want them to get to the good stuff. For reference, the good stuff = the people from Xing and Roy being badass.

Well, there's always a chance they slow down once they get to the parts not covered by the first anime.

They're doing a remake of episodes they've already done?! I thought they were making a new series? Why would they do that when the original is perfect :grumble:

Wha, like hell it is, it's too angsty, too melodramatic, has too many plot holes and too many annoying characters. The only thing that's perfect here is the manga, that's why they're doing a remake. And of course they're gonna start from the beginning. They can't really expect their viewers to have read the manga (or seen the original anime) before watching this one.

Seems like a giant waste of time and money to me. I've read the manga (which I love) and while the anime isn't perfect (I was exaggerating) it's still very good. The only anime I've seen that is exactly the same as the manga is Death Note (not saying there aren't others but they'd be few and far between)

For anybody who has seen the new version, is it much different to the old?

I must say I have to agree with you...maybe not perfect, but pretty close. I thought the old one captured the spirit of the series much better than the new one. And for those who don't know, yes, the new anime is considerably different from the old in its tone, and soon in its plot, as it will follow the manga from devil's nest on. Which one you think is better all depends on what is important to you in Full Metal Alchemist.

the good stuff = the people from Xing and Roy being badass.

Okay, so we do agree on something...

Yes, Xing people are amazingly awesome. I agree, the pacing is a bit fast, but I think they wish to get through the stuff people have already seen as fast as possible so as not to bore the fans of the original anime.
All in all, I'm much more pleased with this series than the last series. The last one was extremely well done, but I had trouble with so much separation from the manga, which is ten times more amazing, and given the greatness of the first anime, that's saying something.
The major problem I had with the last series is that so many of the characters were different. It was hard for me to maybe watch someone be redeemed in the anime and have them being the ultimate evil in the manga, (just an example) It split my feelings about the characters between each story, and that was hard on me emotionally.
This one, though fast, has great potential, and I think they are living up to the manga and the first anime. I realize that it's still getting there, but with what I've seen so far, I think it's going to be epically amazing. This is because it can even get in on a little of the manga's amazingness because it's following the same plotline.
All in all, I respect the first anime for the way it was made when they didn't have an end to the story, I have undying love for the manga, in all it's epicness, and I am very well pleased with this new anime.

For this new anime that they are working on, I am both impressed and disappointed. I am thrilled that they are making an anime that follows the original storyline, which I admit I enjoy far moreso than the first anime (mostly because the ending was really sad, I think xD). However, I really wish they weren't rushing this new anime like they were. I understand that they want to get past all the stuff that has been seen before in the first anime, but I fear it is taking away from the overall story. I just hope they slow it down some, that I do.

On the whole, though, I am enjoying the anime and how the style more accurately echoes that of the anime. In particular, I love the expressions and background silliness that is seen in the manga. It's very entertaining, that it is. xD

I love FMA! It has to be one of my favourite animes. I tend to be into more girly type show but my boyfriend talked me into watching this with him after he got the dvds. I didn't find the movie as good as the tv series however. The story in general was brilliant and all the history around it. I loved the majority of the characters, especially Armstrong. The theme songs from the show were excellent, soundtrack is way too expensive though. We got the dvds at a pretty good price of Amazon (UK).
