Isaacs is a great actor, he portrays evil in an excellent way (he has played loads of baddies). In the movie, he plays Lucius very well. Althought I han't imagined him like that, I admit his performance is brilliant.

I think Jason Isaacs did a great job playing Lucius Malfoy! He was pretty much as I imagined him- an older version of Draco! Jason acted and looked just like I imagined him. He certainly can play the part of an evil person well!

Jason Isaacs is great!!!!!
The only problem I had is that I liked him too much. I mean, let's admit it, he is fantastic looking. It makes it hard for me to really hate him like I hate the character in the book.
The same thing sort of happened with Snape. Alan Rickman... I mean... come on...
I will try very hard to keep the movie and the books seperate, but now everytime Lucius Malfoy is talked about all I can think about is what a yummy creature Jason is.
Must remember that Lucius Malfoy is very, very evil... but scrumpcious *shut up brain, shut up brain*

Madame Malfoy, I agree with you I must say. He is my favourite actor (Alan Rickman is my favourite as well) and I enjoy all his movies. He really is "so good at being so bad" and can't think about Lucius as a bad, ugly man any more, because he is really charming, though evil...
And you know, I can listen to him forever, his voice is so beautiful.

What I liked about Isaacs was his "evil" was rather different than Rickman's "evil". We weren't getting the same kind of thing from two different characters.
I was very impressed.

For some reason I imagined Draco's father to have black hair, despite it was described as blonde. However, Isaccs rose up to my expectations enourmously, he was everything as to how I imagined him. When I re-read the books, I see him, and I imagine him acting that bit. And yes, it works, I can see it immediately. To me this is a good actor.
I agree with you lorna, the evils are very different and it adds depth that it needs for a good story, and in this case, film.

Oh my goodness, he does and excellent job! He is exactly the kind of Lucius I imagined, except with longer hair, ha. A man who is perfectly evil, but also very refined. He is great bad guy! I also loved him in "The Patriot." I bet he really enjoys playing bad guys!

I don't know whether Jason enjoys playing bad guys, as DWeasley had said but... he does it perfectly! Really I haven't seen an actor who is so good at playing villains yet.
And I watched "The Patriot", too. What can I say here? It was something amazing... But have you seen him in "Sweet November"?

I have to say that I agree with pretty much everyone else here: Jason Issacs is an excellent actor, and no one does "deliciously evil" as well as him.
Insomnia, I did see him in "Sweet November"! Talk about a different kind of role -- a homosexual cross-dresser (and he's really a sweet person too). Whatever he plays, I always love him though.
I didn't imagine Lucius Malfoy to look anything like he did in the movie, but Issacs pulled it off perfectly, and now when I think of the elder Malfoy a picture of Issacs from CoS immediately comes to mind. Alan Rickman, Issacs, and Kenneth Branagh surely raise the acting talent for the Harry Potter movies. :D

I too thought Isaacs was perfect for the role. Somehow evil in an attractive package is more potent...remember Satan, when originally created, was the most beautiful of angels...
Insomnia

Yeah...
That's right. If villain -apart from being devil- is attractive, too... it makes him more and more interesting... the real devil, of course must be.
Speaking of "Sweet November": yes, yes... this role was so different from his usual characters. The man in woman's clothes is also charming when Jase plays him, really... Don't you think?
I have an question: does some of you knows, if "Passionada" film with Mr Jason will be realase in the cinemas? And where?

I have to say that Jason Issacs did an absolutely brilliant job as the domineering, disturbing, snobbish Malfoy and I've never been more glad to see an arch-villain on the screen. He was meticulous, devilish, condescending and down right nasty. Absolutely perfect as Lucius.
Oh, and he's a sex god .

Jason Issacs portrayed Lucius very well. He has the abilty to play baddies to the highest degree. Also I can remember him saying in an interview that he had read the entire Harry Potter series so that may also be the reason why he grasped the role of Lucius so well.

June 30th, 2003, 12:45 am
He and his family are going to be at my aunts house this week (Emma Issacs and my aunt were best friends through school) They're on their way back from Australia where J.I. was in Peter Pan (I wonder if he gets tired of being the bad guy) and they have a stop over in NY. She promised to take pictures... I wonder if I can scan them in?
Insomnia
June 30th, 2003, 1:39 pm
I have seen Jase in "Patriot", too. You know- it was something. I never thought I will watching film only for one person- and that person's role is sadistic, ruthless villain Colonel Will Tavington...
By the way Chimaera, if it's true, why cannot your aunt introduce you to Mr Jason? Maybe you'll relate your meeting to us? :D I am waiting. Hmm... and I don't think he is tired at playing bag guys- he is just so natural in roles like Malfoy or Tavington- he suits them, see. And it is really pleasure to see so charming man like him as baddie... It's more nicely to watch him killing people when he is good-looking, enchanting

June 30th, 2003, 1:54 pm
He was far too attractive for the role! :) I now find it very difficult to hate Lucius, even though I know I should. That accent was wonderful though. But did anyone think he sounded different in Floorish and Blotts to how he did in Hagrid's hut?
Also, he gives great inetrview. There was a very funny one (i'll see if I can dig it up) with him and Tom Felton riffing off what each other had said.

June 30th, 2003, 2:06 pm
What do you mean by "sounded different"? I haven't noticed it. But you know, I wanted Lucius to be attractive- he should be if he is so proud of himself... And I love Jase's accent. When he talks... umm... ;) Also I think it is very good Lucius has that wonderful maner- he must, he is lofty, arrogant Malfoy...
I would be delighted if you found that interview, Wild Rose.
Wild Rose
June 30th, 2003, 3:37 pm
Don't get me wrong, I think he is wonderful.
I just thought the accent sounded a little more affected, snobbier in Hagrids hut than it did earlier. Although I suppose that could b due to a change in audience (going from talking to Harry and the other kids, to talking to the Minister.)
@-'-,---------------
Insomnia
June 30th, 2003, 5:56 pm
Perhaps only coincidence...? Or maybe you're right that this was more affected at Hagrid's- maybe... you know... he wanted to sound snobbier in front of Dumbledore and Fudge. Fudge- because he licks Fudge's boots as usual. Dumbledore- because he want to make Dumbledore think he is only human and he hate Dumbledore, I think...
However... I was watching this scene (Hagrid's Hut) again -actually I watched all the scenes with Lucius more than 50 times already- and I discovered that it could have something to do with sound...

Jason Isaacs plays a great Lucius Malfoy. He usually makes a great villian, no wonder the producers thought he was great for the part.
It's true that it's really dificult to hate Malfoy now that he is impersonated by none other than Jason. Not only Isaacs plays Lucius Malfoy, he IS Lucius Malfoy.

I agree Jason Isaacs was perfect as Lucius. He does the smooth, controlled evil thing so well!! There even seems to be a family resemblence between Draco and his dad.
Someone selse might have brought this up, but did anyone notice in the movie, after Dobby gets the sock Lucius starts to say something like "AVADA...." was he going to death curse Harry right there at Hogwarts? In the book he only moves theateningly towards Harry. He doesn't say anything, besides which, the Avada Kedavra curse has be introduced in COS. Just thought it was an interesting twist.

When I first saw Isaacs as Lucius in the trailers, I was hyped. He was PERFECT [in my eyes] for such an evil father.
He did well as Lucius, I thought that the casting department did a very fine job. He has that evil vibe, he certainly potrays such a twisted fatherly figure in an excellent way.

Isaacs was great - which makes me wonder if the rumor that he doesn't want to be in anymore HP movies is true cause if it is that's sad. However I don't see why people think he's "yummy." Alan Rickman is very yummy, especially that spine melting voice of his. But Isaacs - well, just not my type.

Jason Isaacs is my favourite actor, and has been since The Patriot came out. I had gone to see it in the theaters, and saw him there, and went to see it 7 more times cause of him. I have every single movie he's been in, even if it's just a tiny part, like in "Shopping." When I saw him in CoS, I literally screamed in the shows. I didn't know he was in it. My friend thought I was having a heart attack lol. But he does play evil, VERY well. Colonel Tavington, in The Patriot, is really the most evil man I've ever seen played. He was just soooo good though. He plays Lucius Malfoy very well too.
I hope he's around for the fifth movie. I wish they could pass up the fourth and go straight to the fifth. <sigh>

Did you see the video clip where they were rehearsing? I think they were running through the part in the bookshop. Jason accidentally smacked Daniel Radcliff with that cane of his, right over the head. So then he pulled him over, patted him on the head, and went "sorry luv" in this really funny English accent. Freaky, but funny,

Well, you described it pretty well - it was an accident, Lucius was shoving "that potter boy" Harry to the side with his cane, 'cept Dan was in a position where Jas pushed him into the archway (or was it a column). Oh and it wasn't the bookstore - it was DD's office. And it wasn't rehearsal, it was a miss-take. And as you said went "ooh, oh oh, sorry love" and patted Dan's head (lucky Daniel) hehe. It was just so funny to see him being so commanding and austere and evil and then "oh you poor dear" lol.

Ah, right. Sorry, it's a while since i've seen it. (That, and my memory is terrible.) I just thought it was so cute. And I read something where Jason said he was terrified of cracking Tom (Felton) across the fingers, from that bit in Borgin and Burkes where he keeps just missing Draco's hands. Must have been pretty hard to do, I think.
I love the COS DVD interviews with him.
It's typical. There were dozens of interviews, linked in an old thread. Just when I decide to go find them, I realise that a whole load of the old threads have gone! ARGH.

Was it in the 'making of' featurette o_O hmmm, i was there thinking it was on DVD, but it couldn't be could it? Good thing I have it on video *hem hem*. I saw an interview with Jas a couple weeks ago, he related a story how he was recognised, by this 6ft4 biker looking guy who had a piece of his nose missing, as "that evil guy" and Jason thought he was talking about recognising him from Black Hawk Down (which i recommend, if only for his, Ewan's, Orlando's and Eric Bana's performances) or The Patriot but no, this guy knew him as Lucius. When Jason asked how old his kids were the guy frowned and said "what are yer talking about, i saw it by myself, 4 times". It was really funny how he told it... I always swore that the Dr who you see at the end of Resident Evil was him. It is. All you can see is the eyes, he is wearing a face-mask, and he is uncredited, but I knew I recognised those eyes! I just checked it on IMDB. But, the thing is, he plays Dr William Birkett. Who is a very big deal in Resident Evil 2. Unfortunatly, I doubt we will be getting a sequel, since the first movie didn't do too well, but do you think they would use him if they did? We can but hope!

Oh, dear! I was at Pirates of the Caribbean, too and I haven't seen it! But, obviously, my country (for information- Poland, if anyone knows where it is, i'll be glad) is last with everything :sigh: But even if it is like I think- I hope Peter Pan will be in Polish cinemas...
For all the Brits in here: Why is it that your country is full of those MARVELLOUS guys?!
How much right you are, Fleur! I always wanted to visit Britain and what you say is one of many reasons I want to do it. :)

hello insomnia, do I understand right that he is supposed to be in Pirates of the caribean? Where? At least imdb didn't credit him, so I suppose the part wasn't big?
and to Loz - that signature of yours... that is torture you know, as we were talking about marvellous brits. I've been running through every stupid videoshop in an area of 50 miles and I could not even get the video, not talking about the dvd. I don't have to mention that it was - for reasons I do not apprehend - never on TV. But I have to stop raving, this is Mr. Isaacs' appreciation thread, and he deserves it so well.
By the way, I've got a question: imdb credits his voice appearance in Reign of fire (I saw the synchronized version, nevertheless: one of the worst movies EVER), can somebody tell me, whose voice he played (that sentence lacks any clear meaning, hope you understand though!)?

Insomnia meant for the trailers. The Peter Pan trailer screened with Pirates at my cinema :)
Sorry my signature is torture, Fleur du mal, but I rather like it. I just got P&P on DVD. (oops, was that me rubbing it in?)
I'm sorry but I have no idea what voice JI did for Reign of Fire.

that's really a great thread, the thing I like most is: now I know I'm not insane. I was a bit worried for watching a childrens movie what - 15? times just because of four scenes with Jason Isaacs. I even borrowed Dragonheart to see him, THAT was clearly insane. For all the Brits in here: Why is it that your country is full of those MARVELLOUS guys?!
And why don't I ever get any?
You're not insane. I watch all the Malfoy scenes a couple of times a week too (though I don't watch the whole film, I've only seen it through twice). *blush*

All those fantastic men down run around, they're sitting in auditions and castings for the whole day, I suppose
You're really relaxing me, thanks so much. My flatmate keeps looking at me like a raving lunatic, though. That's why I like sticking to devotion secretly, it's less embarrassing when the only person you have to justify to is yourself.

One of my favorite parts about Jason Isaacs was his hair! I loved his hair; it was so pretty. It was such a great contrast to all his dark clothes!
I love the way he narrows his eyes when he's feeling really malevolent, too. He's great!

Yes! Yes! You're so right! Probably is was mentioned more than one dozen times, but I also love that voice. And the black coats, and...
has anybody seen "Warlock" with Julian Sands? I did, but only for the sake of J.S., - I don't like Horror - and Mr. Isaacs still beats him 100 to 1.
They could not find someone better for that part, though I did not picture Lucius Malfoy like that when reading the book, he now impersonates him completely.

Jason Isaacs! His name is enough to make me drool
He's brilliant as Lucius! I really got excited when he was cast in the role. He's so delightfully evil (and sexy, I must add). I never saw Lucius (in the books) as something to be adored... until Jason came! I've watched both "The Patriot" and "Sweet November". He rocks! He and Alan Rickman are the reasons why I watch CoS over and over again! :)

I really think that the casting directors could not have found a better Lucius Malfoy. He is just perfect for the role. He has the posh, evil attitude along with the elegance that Lucius Malfoy is about. I really think he was born to do the evil roles (like Colonel Tavington in 'the Patriot' or Hook in 'Peter Pan'; he really didn't look 'the part' in Tuxedo or other movies where he wasn't the evil, antagonistic character)

Jason Issacs is a most talented actor. He simply is so wonderfully evil in HP. I took my children to see Peter Pan, and now I absolutely adore him. He is so deliciously evil as Hook, not to mention as handsome as he is evil. Guess I must have something for those dangerous men.
I do hope that he is available when the film OotP. I would just love to see him in those ending scenes.
I might also mention that I simply adore the way they have been casting these movies. Most of my favorite actors have shown up in some of the roles. Kenneth Branagh (as Lockhart simply wonderful playing a parody of himself), Alan Rickman (could there possibly be a better Snape), David Thewlis (such a talented actor, always pictured him as Lupin, right from the moment I read PoA), and Gary Oldman (just as wonderful as Jason Issacs when playing an evil character). Now if they could just put Liam Neeson in one of these films, my dream would come true.
Even though I am American, through and through, I am an Anglophile. Almost all of my favorite actors are British, Irish, or Scottish. There is just something about those British boys, don't know what it is, it just grabs me.

so, I did it - *still a little embarrassed with the girl's face in the video shop* - I borrowed "The Patriot" AND "The Tuxedo"...
both films aren't really good, are they? but I adored Mr. Isaacs; he was thoroughly impressing as Colonel Tavington, and utterly sexy as what-was-his-name in the Tuxedo. really, I liked it, he doesn't have to play the baddie to be convincing. and I must agree with whoever said so - I'm waiting for the cemetary scene in GoF - only the eyes...? marvellous!!!

you did not miss TOO much, as long as the movie itself is concerned - though it has a lovely sword fight scene, where the script writer found indeed a possibility to show mr isaacs with open hair and open shirt - that one scene was worthwhile those, what, 2 and a half hours of ****, believe me.

Jason Isaacs was a great choice for Lucious...if you've ever seen The Patriot w/ Mel Gibson...you'd see that he was a great choice for this role...he is a realistic theatrical version of Draco's father, and they even look very similar (though it's a wonder what they do w/ makeup and stuff, but i'm guessing they didn't need to do much...)

Normally I don;t post just to agree- but from the first moment I saw Jason Isaacs as Malfoy I just kept saying that it was the best bit of casting I've ever seen. He is absolutely perfect as Malfoy- the acting, the voice, the facial expressions. But, I got to say the wig is the very best part, it definitely completes the picture for me.
I'm still mad that the scene with him and young malfoy in CoS in knockturn alley was cut out (you can watch it on the dvd) it's perfect, and introduces his character perfectly. (that scene was one of my favorites in the book too)
Also- I rented Peter Pan the first day it came out on video just to see him as hook. I didn;t know Jason Isaacs before chamber of secrets came out- but his malfoy interpretation has made me a huge fan-
Now we just need to find him the perfect NArcissa...

I think many of the cast are close to prefection but Jason Issacs as Malfoy is so incredibly awesome. I have other movies I never noticed who he was in, because he plays his parts so well you are not trying to figure out who he is, you just believe he is that character. I barely noticed the character in the book until I saw the movie. I also love Snape because Alan Rickman plays him as thought there is something else to him which I am hoping for in he books so I applause them both and many others McGonagall, Dumbledore #1, the trio, many well cast parts.

It's quite possible that Jason Isaacs is the reason I'm now a Harry Potter fan. I saw the films before I read the books, both films at once, on DVDs. I enjoyed both movies, but I must admit, when Mr. Isaacs came on screen as Lucius Malfoy, I really sat up and took notice. In fact, I might've had to repeat his first scene over and over, many times, to make sure I didn't miss anything.
So, y'all can blame Jason Isaacs for my presence on these boards. :)

Talking about the COS DVD: I think the deleted scene in the dark arts shop is one of the best in the movie - because for the first time you get an idea of how the relation between Lucius and Draco really is - its a pitty that they cut it out.

Hey!
I was going though all the posts in this tread, reading bits and pieces of information on the great Jason Isaacs... :eyebrows: And while doing that I stumbled across posts that mentioned a take of the CoS movie where Jason accidently hits Dan with the cane. I was, of course, very curious to see that! So doing some research on Google, I found a site that contains that scene!
Here is the link. (http://www.sequined-sensation.me.uk/HPCOS/)

I had sort of a six degrees of HP night last night in a sort of movie marathon. While successfully procrastinating from doing work for the office, I watched like 4 movies - I watched CoS which was all over HBO - it was so much fun watching Jason. Every scene he's in makes me happy. He's so sinister. Well, then I watched Sense and Sensibility (with Alan Rickman), so that was another HP connection. Heck, there are like 4 HP actors in S&S (madam pomfrey, the fat lady (from the first two films), Snape, Fudge). Then I watched Y tu Mama tambien (sp?) b/c I'd never seen it and wanted to know what it was about, so that's an HP connection with the director. Then finally, I watched this great little move called St. Ives. Mr. Isaacs shows up in that one as well, and guess what? He's a bad guy! I know, shocking. He plays the evil rebrobate brother, and does a characteristically good job.
A few years back I was obsessed with Gladiator. I was thrilled to see a movie that had a real hero in it - a hero that's complicated enough to be loved above the bad guy. Have you ever noticed that nowadays we seem to love the bad guys more than the good guys? I don't know if this is some sort of societal change, but it sometimes makes me think we've gone a little off-track. So, Gladiator was a movie where the bad guy wasn't this tower of sex appeal. (yes, some people loved him, but he was portrayed as an incestuous whiner - not really that appealing). At about the same time that Gladiator came out, The Patriot with Mel Gibson came out. While I really take issue with the historical accuracy of that movie, I did find myself drooling after Jason Isaacs' character. He was pretty darn evil (unrealistically so, frankly. I'd like someone to show me evidence of a british officer burning women and children in a church during the Revolution! Puleeeeeze!). Still, there's a sort of burning passion in the way that Jason Isaacs plays his roles which I find very appealing. He simmers. And then those eyes are so icey blue. He does a good job of attracting us to his characters, and I appreciate that, even if I'd prefer my bad guys to really look nasty and bad and not have any redeeming qualities. I used the character he played in the Patriot to show how Gladiator was different, and it is. I mean, we all root for Harry to win, but we are also looking forward to his (and our) next encounter with Lucius. Whereas, in Gladiator, no one wanted another minute with Commodus - we wanted Maximus to live. ( :( )
Anyway, Jason Isaacs would never be tossed out of my bed for eating crackers. :D

I can't think of a person better suited to play Lucius Malfoy. Ever since seeing the movie THE PATRIOT in which Jason Isaacs plays that horrifically mean british officer I don't think I could ever see him in any role other than that of a purely diabolical megalomaniac, such as Malfoy.... He's probably the nicest guy in the world, so this isn't a slam on his character but WOW he plays the heck out of a bad guy role!
