We all know about the schoolbooks of course, but how many wizard book titles and other publications have been mentioned in the books? How many can you find and name? There have been a lot of them, just think of all the times Hermione has gone to the library.
Does anyone remember the wizard's comic book, Martin Miggs the Mad Muggle?
I'll start off with the one we all want to read -
Hogwarts: A History
FirefightingMuggle
June 16th, 2003, 9:16 pm
Moste Potente Potions- the book that the PolyJuice Potion was in
Quidditch through the Ages
ArabellaBlack
June 16th, 2003, 9:21 pm
The only exact title I can think of right now is "Hippogriff: Fowl or Foul?"
Cat

It's quite funny that this subject has come up, because I was thinking a while ago that I should compile a list of named books and their authors (for a web page, I don't just do that kind of thing for fun... well, actually, I do...).

And of course there's Tom Riddle's exciting "Diary" - one of his earlier works, written in an unusual interactive format. Now sadly out of print. :)
Was there really a book such as the one Ron described where, once you started reading it, you'd never be able to stop? I can't remember if that was just an invented example to dissuade Harry from reading the diary, or if it ever really happened.
It's not really important, though. Just wondering....

Most of the magical books have to do with history or something technical (obviously, since they've been introduced by Hermoine.) But, I wonder: Would you believe that art books of some sort exist in the Wizarding Library as well?
I'd like to think that the Library includes some art books, like we would find a compilation of Monet prints in our libraries; or else that the Library would also include fiction and fantasy (and it would be interesting to find out what their kind of fiction/fantasy stories are.) I'd also like to think that they have books on plays and what not.
I mean, as a school, and with the image of a school choir singing in the PoA film, I'm often surprised we haven't heard about a drama club or a school sponsored play of sorts, or a musical performance by a Hogwarts Glee club. Maybe its my muggleness, but I think an introduction of these sorts of proceedings would better round out my perception of Hogwarts and Wizarding World. I mean, they have sports, "science" classes, history classes, and ethnic studies classes (Muggle Studies); I'd love it if they had art or literature classes as well. After all, plenty of imagination must exist if one is to be a witch or a wizard, wouldn't you say?

Thanks for the lists, everybody. Wouldn't it be really nice if JKR published some more of them as additional background (like the Comic Relief books)? OK, there wouldn't be much point in writing books like Charm Your Own Cheese, but personally the ones I'd like to see are:
Hogwarts: A History
A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot
Magical Theory by Adalbert Waffling
Notable Wizarding Events of the 20th Century
Important Modern Magical Discoveries
Weird Wizarding Dilemnas and Their Solutions
A Guide to Medieval Sorcery
Anyone else got any preferences?

Am I a lousy reader or did you forget 'The Quibbler'?
I thought of that as well, but then I wondered if the library would carry it. My school library doesn't carry tabloids, and I'm guessing that's what it would be classified as, at least at the beginning of OotP.

You may be right about that. With 90 books (I may have counted them wrong) and 6 other periodicals our library would be quite well stocked without 'The Quibbler'.
Btw. We also have 4 publishers.

I think periodicals should be included as well, after all, I mentioned the comic book in the first post. ;)

I don't think the hogwarts library carries periodicals. It doesn't seem to carry the Daily Prophet and I know school librarys that get the local paper at least. Everyone has to get it deliveried. And no one has ever mentioned getting a magazine from the library- even for reading in the library.

I really want to read:
Charm your own Cheese
Hogwarts: A History
and I'd love to read some of those spell books. I bet they would be pretty neat. And 1,000 Magical Herbs and Fungi. Brew up some potions at home. :eyebrows:

I wonder if there are Muggle novels about the wizarding world included. Coming to mind right away is "The Once and Future King" by T.H. White.

I remember Martin! I'm also a rather large fan of Charm Your Own Cheese. Don't know how many other Potterholics are obsessed with cheese, but it's like my trademark.
