Hey all. So, what do you think of this new movie with the two more reasons to love Pirates. This movie looks way cool! What'd you think?

I love Johnny Depp. Even when I don't enjoy the plots of his movies, I still enjoy them. He's so awesome. I really don't think "pirate" when I think of him, but he looks pretty convincing. The previews are awesome. I can't wait.

Ooh I am WAY excited to see this movie! My friend and I are obsessed with Orlando Bloom, and we are eagerly counting down the days until July 9th! She will be out of town though, so it won't be as much fun seeing it for the first time without her :( Oh well, Johnny Depp looks really good in it. I'm excited!

I have absolutely no idea what the film is about ( well it's about pirates but that's all I know ) but Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom are good enough reasons to go see the movie. Plus there's also Geoffrey Rush and Jonathan Pryce wich makes the movie even more worth seeing. Hope it won't be a disappointment.

I doesn't look dissapointing at all. One thing that is funny is that it comes out in less than a movie and it still isn't rated. :) It looks PG-13, but I think they're trying to make it PG.

My "no Jerry" policy got canceled out by my "all Johnny Depp" policy. For those who don't know, Jerry is the "genius" behind Kangaroo Jack, Armageddon, and Beverly Hills Cop among other things. But to his credit, he did produce Black Hawk Down and CSI. Aside from that one movie and one TV show, his stuff is unwatchable.

The film is rated PG-13, look at IMDB. Most Disney movies aren't R movies, not even a war film like Pearl Harbor (it was released by Touchstone, that is a sub-company), and PotC is obviously aimed at a familiar audience.
The ride at Disneyland is just wonderful, one of my favourite rides everywhere. Althought the movie doesn't follow the same plot, the skeletons look really cool, and as there hasn't been a Pirates movie in a while, I'm going to see it. And Geoffrey Rush looks terrific as the captain of the pirates.
I still want to see a Monkey Island flick, and if this one's succesful they may thinki about the idea of translatinh MI to the screen. That would be an awesome movie if well made :yup:
I'm disappointed because they rejected Alan Silvestri's score. Silvestri always makes wonderful scores, I don't understand why they have rejected it, a I was looking foward to it. Besides, the director, Gore Verbinski, has always worked with him. The good news are that the chosen for the job are Hans ZImmer and Klaus Badelt, an those guys are awesome. Togheter, they've made good scores like The Rock or Gladiator. Badelt has also worked solo, and composed one of the best soundtracks last year, The Time Machine, so I think that at least they've done the right thing by choosing them.

I prefer to remember Jerry for the atrocities that are Coyote Ugly, Pearl Harbor, Gone in Sixty Seconds and Con Air. No good can come from the man, he's just pure evil.
Black Hawk Down was just less bad than his other attempts. It wasn't really outstanding.
Further evidence for the No Jerry Rule and why people shouldn't see Pirates of the Carribean.

I agree that Coyote and all Schumacker and Bay flicks aren't very good, but that doesn't mean ALL his movies are bad. One of the great movies he has produced is, as I said, Black Hawk Down. It was an excellent war movie, thanks to Ridley Scott. But Kangaroo Jack looks awful.

Well, I had the grave misfortune of seeing two Jerry B. trailers the other night, including one for Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
I have two general rules when viewing films:
1. Never, ever, ever see anything produced by the Jer (aka Jerry Bruckheimer).
2. Never, ever, ever see anything with ":" in the title (eg Ballistic: Ecks Vs Sever). Nothing good can ever come from them.
Now I have more reasons not to see Pirates. It's produced by Jerry, has a ":" in the title and just looks rather silly.
It's a shame, really, because it has some good actors in it. Geoffrey Rush is very talented when he wants to be (we'll just ignore his presence in The Banger Sisters) and Keira Knightley was very promising in Bend It Like Beckham.
Sigh. What were they thinking?
Llopin
July 2nd, 2003, 1:37 pm
This isn't going to be a movie to remember. It's just going to deliver what it promises: entertainment. No deep thoughts or complex storlyline, but an adventure film for the whole family. And to be honest, there haven't been films like this one in a long time.
The Jer isn't brilliant, but some of his productions are actually enjoyable - just a few, my favourite being Black Hawk Down. However, most of his movies are bad (specially if Michael Bay is directing). But Gore Verbinski isn't that bad, Mouse Hunt and The Ring were enjoyable. And Geoffrey Rush looks promisng as a pirate.
Concerning the ":", I must disagree. Many movies featuring : were Good. You precisely posted the worst flick of all, but take, for example, T2: Judgement Day or 2001: A Space Odyseey. Anyway, originally the movie was to be called just Pirates of the Caribeban (just look at the early teaser), but for a stupid reason they added the sub-title, that isn't necessary. PotC alone sounds better.
WhiteSlash
July 2nd, 2003, 6:18 pm
Like the ride. It's just called Pirates of the Carribean, but it's about a curse in a way. I guess that's the curse of the black pearl because of the rich skeltons. I think they may do a sequel that's why it's called Pirates of the Carrbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
There have been many good movies with the ':' in it though. I think you're thinking of all the bad movies with the ':'. Jer has done some great things though to. Bad Boys II looks great, and what they did for the Pirates premire is amazing!

It looks excellent. Much better than "The Haunted Mansion" that Disney is also making (which stars Eddie Murphy, so it's not going to be scary). This actually has a plot as well as great actors so it should definitely be interesting. (Plus the fact that Orli is mighty fine helps as well).

With few exceptions. :D (Only three I can think of at the moment, and those are the LOTR films.)
Ah, wait! Llopin mentioned 2001: A Space Odyssey. The SW films can apply to, if you leave in the colon.
But when you take into account movies like Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, then yeah, the colon applies.
I wonder why I'm rambling about colons still? *shutting up now* Ah well, I'm not expecting too much out POTC. I'll see it, certainly, but purely for entertainment value. The actress playing the lead female role performed admirably in Bend It Like Beckham, but I'm not too sure about how she'll do in POTC, as her role appears to be the generic pretty-girl-who-shags-the-pretty-boy type. Still, I'm interested in seeing Orlando Bloom's acting abilities outside LOTR, and Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush are talent actors as well. Can't hurt to check it out, but I don't expect to be blown away.

I went and saw it tonight. It was definately worth it. I loved the movie. It's nothing like the Disney ride. Johnny Depp was great as Captain Jack Sparrow (gotta have the Captain in there!;) ). Orlando was quite good too. It was a good summer action adventure movie. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I'm really glad to read about all the favorable reviews this movie is getting! I think I'm going to see it next Tuesday (probably), and I was pretty sure I would like it because of the actors and the plot that came across as pure fun in the trailer. I was a little frightened by Jerry Bruckheimer's role in the film, but since everyone is liking the movie, it makes me more confident. :D

Aw, I missed the bit at the end. We were talking to this group of about 20 or so that had come dressed as pirates (they were funny, including "ARRRR-ing" during the trailers and stuff) but we left before the end. Hmm, an excuse to watch it again? :D

I noticed it, but I didn't give it too much thought. I Loved this movie. I'm going to go see it again tomorrow with some friends. Best movie I've seen all year (With the exception of CoS, because I saw that really late in like march). Orlando Bloom...so gorgeous.lol. Does anyone else think that Johnny Depp would make a really good Sirius? I think he would. lol. Minus the eyeliner, of course. The end was so predictable though. "So this is the path you choose...even if he is a blacksmith?"..."He's not a blacksmith (dramatic pause) He's a pirate." ::kiss:: Someone in the row behind me finished the line before she did. I was like "yup, that's predictable." lol. All in all: two thumbs up.

Oooh, I really liked this film. I didn't have any expectations about it beforehand, so the movie itself was a pleasant surprise. I was struck by the nice cinematography, and the costumes impressed me. They seem to be pretty accurate and the pirate costumes, especially Jack Sparrow's, are very creative. The cast in general is good. Johnny Depp makes a wonderful pirate captain-- I think he is excellent in this role.

Alright, being a soundtrack freak, I must ask some questions to the (lucky) persons who've been able to see the film. Is the music good? Are there many themes? Is the "Yo-ho-ho it's a pirate's life to me" song of the ride used in the movie, with lyrics or just with instruments.
I'm looking foward to this soundtrack, it's from Klaus Badelt, one of my favourite composers,

There are themes and some vocals on some. The music works really well with the movie. I love Cap'n Jack Sparrow's theme. It works really well. A lot of the themes are darker due to there being evil pirate's that cannot be killed and that are curse to be evil skels. And yes, the best song of all time is in the movie. People got mad cause I was singing it with her. I don't know if it would be on the sound track, but they did it with one of the Spider-man CD's(The main theme) so they may do it with this.:)

After the movie ended, I got all upset that Orli had kissed Elizabeth and started ranting and raving... I also talked on and on about how I wanted an undead monkey, and it would be so much fun to stick it in and out of windows during the night to watch it change. Bony monkey... Furry monkey! ...Bony monkey! ...Furry monkey! And so on until the undead monkey bites my hand. ...And I like the Trojan joke.... Something like... The pirate song is too great; wonderful how the movie began and ended with it.
I have to say that I loved Johnny Depp and his portrayal of Jack. Honestly, every time he came onscreen I would just sit there and grin like a fool, because IMHO he completely owned the entire movie. I wasn't terribly impressed with Orlando's performance, possibly because I was expected so much more of m'dear Legolas, but I have to admit that he handled his action scenes brilliantly.
Overall, it was an entertaining and fun film, but I still maintain that Depp stole the show. His character was definitely one of the most hilariously portrayed in movie history; literally everything he said and did cracked me up. I felt like the biggest idiot in the theater because I was laughing even when something like:
But why's the RUM gone?
It wasn't even so much that he was funny all the time; he brought so much character to the role. I would have to say that the only character in the entire film that could compete with him for charisma was
The undead monkey!
...which creeped the heck out of me at first, but oh well. And the ending was pretty neat as well. :yup:

I really liked it. :) And I agree, I think Johnny Depp did a really good job, especially with his swaggery movements and just 'weirdness', which he carried through the entire film. One of the particular fight scenes (between Jack and Will in the beginning in the blacksmith's shop) was well done IMO, and I think the movement in the scene was creative. The movie did keep an aura of authenticity even though the film itself did not focus on it, and for a light(er) action movie, there was a good effort to keep things looking interesting. I also like how it referenced back to the Pirates of The Caribbean ride, (such as the scene with the prisoners beckoning to the dog with the keys in his mouth, and that whole pirate village with the fires, fights, prostitutes and rum.) The special effects were well done, and the movement of Jack and Barbosa during their fight in and out of the moonlight was good because you got to see more of the effects. Anyway, I agree that Johnny Depp really created the atmosphere for the film, and I think it was good. :)

Box Office Time!
In its first five days (from wednesday to sunday), Pirates of the Caribbean has grossed a total of 70$ million, topping the box office list, far ahead from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (who got 23$m). This is possible as Badelt composed the Gladiator music next to Hans Zimmer, so it may be a similar style. Badelt is always great anyhow.

The bits that sound like Gladiator are the bits that were composed by Klaus Badelt. Hans Zimmer 'discovered' Badelt in Germany and brought him over to the states to work on Gladiator.

I thought the movie was quite good. I mean so long as you go in realizing that its not high art, you'll be quite entertained. I saw johnny Depp in some interview (I think on the "Tonight Show") where he said he played Jack Sparrow as if pirates were the rock stars of yesteryear, and as such felt that Jack Sparrow would have been the Keith Richards of his day. If you've ever seen interviews and such with Keith, then you'll realize just how well Johnny Depp pulled that off. You could tell that he was just having a ball with the role, and wasn't taking it too seriously, which is EXACTLY what this movie needed. Without him and to a somewhat lesser extent Geoffrey Rush, this would not have been anywhere as good as it was.
Johnny Depp is definitely one of the better actors out there today. I've been impressed with him in almost every role, like Edward Scissorhands or the gypsy dude in "Chocolat"...quite good.

I finally got to see the movie today with my mom, and we both loved it. Johnny Depp was hilarious, and I'm always amazed by the extent to which he delves into whatever role he's playing. His entrance to the movie was perfect, as was his entire role. I also liked the love story between Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner. It was quite lovely. ;) All of the "good guys" were likable and strong in their own right. And I agree with Marvolo and Celestine -- the part where Will impersonates Jack Sparrow is very funny.
Overall, this movie is a lot of fun, and I'd recommend it to anyone. As I said before, I was afraid at first that producer Jerry Bruckheimer would ruin the film, but it didn't feel like one of his typical movies at all. Orlando Bloom, Johnny Depp, and Geoffrey Rush were all excellent. If you like fun movies, go see this one! :D

Did anybody else really want to go to Disneyland while watching it?
I wasn't too enthusiastic about going but then my friends reminded me that Johnny was in it....
And now, thanks to excellent source of mom, Depp was going for the "Keith Richard" style of acting. :rotfl: Now its my siggy :D

I did. That's the best ride at Disneyland! :D
My friend is really sort of slow. When I told her it was really good for a pirate disney movie she said, "It's a Disney movie?" and she's been to Disneyland. :)

I just saw it today, and I enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun, and Johnny Depp really made the movie. The only problem I had with it is that I thought some of the action scenes tended to drag on a bit longer than they should have, and some of the dialouge was predictable. But it was still really good, and I really enjoyed it. :D

December? *gulp* That's pretty awful.
I've never been on the ride before, but I've heard that it's great fun. Then again, the last time I went to Disney World was around ten or eleven years ago, so I think it's about time I went back and checked it out. :yup:

Oh the ride is great! You'll love it! I've heard it's the same thing at Disneyworld. There's stuff you'll reconize from the movie, like the dog and the keys with the people and that city with women and the drunk guy. I love the drunk guy:D.
December!! I'm so writting to the producer!

don't remember the ride :-/ but the movie, OH the movie...it was BRILLIANT! Johnny Depp has always been one of my favourite actors. (for his amazing ability at acting and of course...the lickable factor:p ) He is usually cast in romantic roles/serious and dramatic roles, and i think this was a great change! I think it's fab that all of the keith richard-ish-ness came from johnny's imagination. brill film :)

I just saw this movie last night and absolutely loved it. It was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It had it's scary/suspenseful moments but it was funny too. Not a lot of movies can pull that off without sucking majorly. Plus it had 2 gorgeous and talented leading men: Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom (my future husband). They were a great team and Depp's wacky persona kept me laughing throughout the whole movie.

It's just this boat ride. You go through on this really slow moving boat and there are scenes in it to look at. I haven't been in like 10 years so I don't remember it all that well, but my mom says that the scene in the movie with the dog and the keys and so are one or two other scenes.

I'll give you the run down for the ride. I was at disneyland a month ago.
First the boat leaves and you go slowly and pass this old man with a bango and you hear the Oh Susana song with a dog. Then you go in this tunnel and there's a sulk on a little thing. You stop and the sulk talks about a curse and how to be warned of it. Then it does an evil laugh and you go down a ramp and stuff. Then you see this selketon in wind and rain drives a boat in the rain. You pass others on mounds of gold and jewels. Then after a while when you finish with the gold and ahh you go down another ramp and there you see a ship like in the movie and fights of pirates and an army. Cannons and stuff and then into a pirate city like the one in the movie and the best song in the world comes on. Then after you pass the dancing ladies and drunk pirates you see the city on sort of fires which you can tell are on sheets:). Then at the end before the last ramp there's a that dog and the people who keep asking the dog to come with the keys. Which is in the movie:). Never go on this ride when the ramp is broken. I had to listen to them asking the dog to come for like 15-20 minutes. When it came on in the movie a felt like yelling, No not again! :D There PotC. The best rife at disneyland.

Yep. It's weird too because I remember going to disneyland when I was 4 and being so scared to go on The Mansion ride. My mom forced me to go on it and I didn't go on it again until last month. It scared me like heck.:). It's weird how we act when we're younger at places like this and then go today and see how stupid we were.
Did anyone else think of Moody in this movie with guy with the eye. My friends and I all thought of him.

Pirates of the Caribbean is like one of my favortive movies now. I mean, with Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp how could it not be great? Even a movie about pocket lint would be good if they starred in it. I plan on seeing Pirates a few more times...it was just so good ;D
And WhiteSlash, your avatar is extremly sexy!! :crush:

Pirates of the Caribbean is definitly my favorite movie now. After I saw it the first time my friend and I couldn't stop talking about the movie but mostly about Jack Sparrow. I'd be sitting somewhere thinking about the movie and I'd start to randomly laugh and people would give me odd looks.. lol I've seen it twice now and I know I'm going to see it at least one more time before it comes out on DVD.. I want to own it now though! (I think wednesday is actually when i'm seeing it again..I can't wait!) Anything in the movie with Jack is great! Savvy?
