View Full Version : Is Harry a good-looking boy?

Well if you are considering the movies I would have to say...YES!!! Daniel Radcliffe is really hot and I love him like you cant imagine, but if you are talking about the books then my answer might be a little different. Whenever I read the books I cant help but imagine Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and so on do the things that are mentioned in the books. Before the movies were out however, I was still a huge Harry Potter fanatic and I imagined Harry Potter alot different than I do now. Whenever I read the books now I imagine a fine guy with a face like an angel saving the world against Dumbledore, but before I imagined a kind of geeky looking boy with an ugly face and dorky glasses.

I have always imagined harry as being a cute boy.Not hot but cute and nice. Someone who is very loyal to his good friends.

If we're talking about the movies, I honestly can't see how all these girls think Daniel Radcliffe's so hot! I mean, he's okay with the glasses on but otherwise he's not that good-looking. As far as the books go I guess I pictured him okay, probably like the drawing on the cover.

Actually, when you read Harry's discription he's not handsome at all. He's supposed to be very short, very skinny, with wild black hair, and a long nose. It would seem that the only attribute on him that's remotely beautiful are his eyes.
Daniel Radcliffe is coming along as a handsome young man, and his resemblance to Harry is striking, but I think of him more as the cuter twin brother. They look almost exactly the same, yet for some reason one is just more handsome than the other. I don't think Harry is attractive (at least not book Harry)....that answer you question from this person's point of view?

i was thinking that the other day... if i was at hogwarts, would i find harry attractive... and i thought honestly, "no." i would not think he was cute. the only reason i would date him is because he is "famous harry potter." (silly and superficial i know!)

I always pictured Harry as being sort of cute - in a dorky cute way. I think it's probably because his personality makes him attractive to me. I never imagined him as the school hottie or anything... but not ugly either.
*nods in agreement* This is exactly what I think! Before the movies, I'd always thought he looked all skinny and dorky, but kind of cute at the same time, if you know what I mean! I suppose I always thought he was average looking, but he is a cool person, and personality is what really counts! The release of the movies changed what I imagined Harrry to look like, of course. Now, whenever I read the books, I see Dan (who is way hotter than I ever imagined Harry to be, so it's ok!).
Oh, and messy hair is cool!

I never pictured Harry as breathtakingly good looking. Fairly normal, nice looking, a bit geeky. All of the trio are better looking in the films than I imagined them in the books, which I suppose is necessary to sell films.

I have always thought that he is at least a little attractive. Look at his parents he can't be that ugly can he? Harry reminds me of a guy I like at school messy black hair, green eyes, that sorta thing. I once saw an lj icon that had picture of Dan on it but it looked a lot like that guy. sorry for getting a little off topic.

Well, Cho liked him *shrugs*
I don't think he was ugly, but I don't think he's a heartthrob, either. But I'd say probably more on the cute side. And he's got the whole Quidditch player thing workin for him ;)

Yea, (I'm not talking about Dan Radcliffe, he's cute, but a little young for me!)
Harry is described as looking just like his dad, but with obvious mistakes (eye color etc)
I'd say he'd be quite a catch even if he wasn't famous (for being the boy-who-lived).

I always pictured Harry as good looking, not necessarily a knock out, but certainly handsome. I think his personality adds to his appeal. I'm pretty sure I would like him if I went to Hogwarts...

I always pictured him as average. With the way JKR described him, he wouldn't be anyone I'd take much notice of if he was a real person.
phoenix_16_11
December 16th, 2004, 7:09 am
I think that JKR would have wanted him to appear like a normal boy. Not some absolutely drop-dead gorgeous hero like in most stories. She wanted us to see just a normal boy who doesn't think much of himself, a bit insecure and gawky, but then for him to grow into a handsome talented young man at the end.
I've always thought of him to be normal but he can't be that ugly because his parents were meant to be very beautiful. If I saw him I would certainly notice his eyes. The eyes are the best part of a person and Harry has beautiful eyes. But I think that in the first book how JKR decribed him he wasn't good-looking. He seemed to be a bit of a dork. Broken glasses, tall, gawky, daggy clothes, no friends, so on...
Although, if Harry looks like Daniel Radcliffe he certainly is GOOD LOOKING!!!!  :eyebrows: ;)

I pictured him as cute. Normal, but good looking and cute. I imagine him as a guy who doesn't care about how he looks and doesn't want all of the girls trialing after him. Cute and down to earth. Not nerdy at all...

December 18th, 2004, 7:18 am
Well, I pictured him as a smaller than average skinny little boy with broken glasses. Not necessarily a cute little boy but that is because of his treatment.
I don't think he could look normal because he was so mistreated at the Dursleys. I don't think the boy ever got a good square meal until he went to Hogwarts.
I mean he didn't thrive that is for sure. I think he barely survived. I mean look where the poor kid lived for 11 years of his life.......In a closet!!
Its so sad really and I think the Durselys should go to jail for child abuse!
However, As Harry grows older He changes. I think at hogwarts he begins to gain weight with each year so by the 3rd year I think he starts to look normal. Still kind of gangly because of his awkward age (as most of us are LOL) but not underfed anymore. I think Harry is catching up to his classmates' normal body shape and size. He is smaller than Ron though because Ron is supposed to be really tall.
As Harry entered his 5th year at hogwarts he was 15 and starting to change physically again. I think Harry will be an average handsome kind of guy. Nothing like a greek god or anything but definately attractive.
On the other hand lets remember that Ginny had a huge crush on Harry. Usually kids that age are more superficial than someone older so maybe Harry was at least a cute little boy. Enough for a 10 year old little girl to notice anyway LOL
so anyway, That is what I think. Also, all that time on a broom has got to count for something. I think 3 years of Quiditch (no Quiditch for goblet of fire or Phoenix) is bound to make an improvement on your physical self don't you think?

I always though of Harry as being rather good-looking even before the movies came out. Not a pretty boy or anything but a nice looking boy.

I see him as quite handsome but not particully special... someone I might be interested in but he would't be like a big crush... more like someone I thought was quite cute but more attainable
Jordan
December 18th, 2004, 10:39 am
I think the movies show him as wonderful, where as in the books the front cover is horrible...
I think he should be pretty good looking, but I know JK wanted to make him normal, not in any way greater than anyone else

December 19th, 2004, 12:36 am
...For me, Daniel Radcliffe isn't good looking, but the Harry I imagine when reading the books is.
I agree. Not that he is ugly, but I don't understand why so many people goo about him online so frequently... ....
I think Harry looks perfect for what he is. If he were too pretty it would just be *wrong*. He's not unpleasant looking, but rather plain. But his appearance is infused with his very distinctive character and personality, which makes him attractive! (To me at least. But then, I tend to ignore appearances to the extreme.. my mental image of people is SO directly related to their personality.)

Do you know what Harry's parents look like?
Yes. I've even drawn a picture of how they look. Harry has his father and mother's good looks. But he has his mother's eyes and that's very important in a future book.
---From the Leaky Cauldron (Interview with JKR)
i pictured harry to be quite an average looking boy with beautiful green eyes, but maybe this quote from the interview means that he actually might be an attractive boy?
JK said that? I was never positive that James was supposed to be good looking( I knew Lily was though) but now I am obviously..I think Harry's good looking because how can you have eyes like his and not be good looking!?
He's going get tall I think..like James. Because in SWM chapter Harry thought that when James stood up they would be an inch of eachother in height so James was not extremely tall at that age either but he was when he was older( he was described as a tall man in the mirror of erised) I dont think he'll be unbelievably good looking but definely attractive.

I definately think Harry's good looking! He's has amazing green eyes, and cute ruffled black hair. How can you go wrong? Also, his personality adds alot, making him alot more attractive. When I imagine him in the book, I see him alot more attractive than Daniel Radcliffe. But, I'm not going to lie, Dan is really good-looking too!!

he could be handsome... well, there is what we call ugly duckling. but we'll base his appearance as JK describes him in the book... I really don't think that he's a good looking guy but if you'll base it on the movie... bloody **** he's so... handsome... (Daniel Radcliffe, of course!)

I've always seen Harry as a skinny, tall boy, with messy hair and gorgeous green eyes.
I guess you could call that normal. But I personally think that's good looking.
Different from person to person?

December 19th, 2004, 12:52 pm
I must say no. He might be famous and all, but that doesn't mean he's pretty. He's skinny, small and has a temper (OotP). I'd think that the temper thing would make him look grumpy which isn't good-looking so I don't know, but it's fun to read.

makes me think he must be handsome in JKR's eyes. I always thought James must be handsome. Him, Sirius and lupin always seemed to be the popular, good looking boys, whenever they were described, with wormtail peter tagging along.

wasn't James described as handsome in OotP?
So Harry is just too yong to look as good as his father.. I alwas notice "not pretty" people become gorgeous ince they're in their late teens
for example, I didn't think Emma Watson was pretty in the first movie, but now she's much better looking than a lot of stars out there

He could be a good looking boy. Since he got most of his looks from his father, who was good looking, he must be too. Or it could just be my girlyness taking over me. But, yeah, I really think that Harry is attractive in some way.

I don't think he's very good-looking. Of course Dan is, but I'm talking about HP. The thing is there also is the fame thing: sometimes people go over the appearence just because everyone knows you and you're popular. But after all HP isn't ugly (especially his green eyes!) and this combined with fame: girls drool! :.puddle.:

But I don't think he's the drop-dead-gorgeous type like Sirius obviously was before Azkaban, it's just... I guess he has "something" that can be very attractive, but he doesn't realise it, and that makes him a very down to earth guy.

I don't think Harry is that good-looking. I'd never thought he would be handsome during reading the books. So I was rather confused when all fanfics and many fans decided to think of him as some breathtakingly gorgeous guy.
I remember Pansy Parkinson sort of sneered at Cho's taste in men saying something like "at least Cedric was handsome" on Valentine's day In OotP. Well Pansy might not be a reliable source, then again why did she particularly pick Harry's appearance while she could have picked other hundreds reasons like his mental problem or attention seeking problem like all the other people?
So yeah, I think Harry's not ugly but not that handsome.

I think that Harry is moderatly good-looking but not gorgeous. Some people have said that he looks kind of nerdy but I disagree. He has jet black hair, pale skin and unnaturally green eyes...i think that those features make him appear mysterious and almost erie looking rather than geeky.
So...prince charming---NO! Normal-looking---AN EVEN BIGGER NO!
Arwen42

I think this is subjective, because many people that I know likes to call him a nerd. And I...well...like the nerdy type. So for some he may be nerdy, but for other he can appear to be interesting.

I think that even though Harry doesn't think he is good looking, that he is. Green eyes! Dark hair! He's got to be handsome! I think that even if he wasn't the Boy Who Lived, he would still have girls flockng over him. I don't think he looks either nerdy nor normal, he has sort of an unusual appearance that would look mysterious (as someone mentioned) or even really deep--as in intense perhaps.

I always thought Harry was a cute boy, not drop dead model looking gorgeous, but good looking, plus with green eyes and messy hair, he's especially cute. :P Daniel Radcliffe is never who I had imagined as Harry. Daniel just does't look like Harry to me. Gabriel Tompson, who plays a character named Micheal on a British show called, My Family looks about 90% of who I imagined Harry as.
For anyone interested in who Gabriel Tompson is go to this link:

It's difficult for me to have my 'own' Harry in my head because I didn't read the books till after seeing the 3rd movie (a fact I greatly regret :() So when I read the books, I always see *insert name here of certain someone we weren't supposed to mention in posting* But, if I were to force myself to come up with a 'book' Harry, I think he'd be quite nice looking. Not 'hot', but cute and sweet looking or something. I mean, the fact that he has cowlicks is just adorable.

December 25th, 2004, 6:55 am
I think he's pretty average looking, but that's not to say he's TOTALLY plain. It is mentioned a few hundred times that he looks like James and i was under the impression that James was pretty good looking in his day, but i don't think that he's knock your socks of gorgeous like Sirius and Cedric. [Funny how both of the gorgeous guys are dead, doesn't leave much hope for us girls  :D ]
I have to say that to me Harry is kind of cute, so is Ron. I always hear my friends calling them 'cute' but you don't hear 'hot' a lot. What would really be interesting is if in the sixth book, Harry and Ron really had a growth spurt and beefed up, and all the girls starting to become interesting in him. However, the irony would be that he wouldn't really want the attention as he might have previously had, because he has more important things to worry about, like fighting LV and possibly dying :p

I've always imagined Harry to look a bit...elfish. You know, the messy black hair, big green eyes, fine bone structure. I don't think he's classically handsome, more like...appealing in an odd sort of way. Daniel Radcliffe works, in my opinion, because he has this intensity that I've always imagined Harry to have. I've never thought of Ron as being cute--to me, he's always been a bit of a dorky-looking kid. Hermione is pretty, but she doesn't bother with her appearance, so no one notices.

I thought of him as kinda cute, but I usually imagine people in books as a cartoon. So, that would make me crushing on a cartoon character (not that I haven't caught myself doing this, why do anime boys have to be so hot!?) but, I thought of him as more of an adorable cute, that hot cute, but then, when I started reading, I didn't really crush on boys. Later on, I started to think he looked a little more cute, but not a hottie cute kinda way. :) does that make sence to anyone?

I suppose he would be fairly bood-loking to get girls interested in him and not just as the boy-who-lived. He also looks like James, except for the eyes, and James was I believe, thought as handsome when he was at Hogwarts. I'm not saying he looks like Tom Cruise, but he's not ugly, either. I'd say somewhere in between.

Perhaps a bit nerdy looking, but not ugly. After all, he managed to woo Cho Change, which, after Cedric's death, and including the fact that she's a year older than him and apparently popular, should be considered a bit of an acheivement. I also have reasons to think that Parvati likes him... Jo said he had clear skin, so we know he's not pimply like Stan Shunpike... He has neon-esque green eyes, which you don't see everyday... Overall I guess he's semi-good-looking, give or take. His taped-up glasses make him a bit nerdy. I don't think he's ugly, though.

I'm sure Harry has to be fairly good-loking. He's famous, but he still has to have some good looks for girls to want to date him. Being famous isn't enough. If Tom Cruise were ugly, would anyone still want to date him?

I think of Harry as being classically Celtic in his colouring, very black hair, very pale skin and yes, those eyes - I always thought Dan was a bit too well-scrubbed in the first two movies, hair not black enough, eyes the wrong colour (reminded me more of Tim Henman I'm afraid!), but looks-wise he seems to be growing into the part. Harry is not male model material, too quirky and intense. You'd wonder what was going on behind those eyes, if you met him, and you might even find him a bit scary for reasons you can't quite pin down. Not ugly, then.
I found it interesting to see that Harry's dad James, as portrayed in the first movie, looks strangely similar to my husband...I have a thing about tousled hair, it's sexy, and my H's hair (though thinning a bit) is dark and curly. BTW this may be a touch off-topic but I saw a picture of JKR's husband the other day and can only guess she has a thing for dark-haired geeky types with glasses. :-)

Wow; great analization... I agree with you about Dan not meeting my vision of Harry. He's not nearly as small and spindly as he should be. And the hair and the eyes... it bothered me too. I also didn't like the way Emma looks as Hermione, not that I dislike her acting. Hermione's hair should be much more frizzy as opposed to curly, and I doubt that she's really that thin.
Sorry. Trying not to make this a muggle-studies topic...

I always thought of Harry and Hermoine being cute but just not traditionally cute. There are people who are too good looking and everyone wishes they could be like (Cedric. And then there are attractive people who are normal but nice to look at. That is how I saw them. Hermoine was covinging her looks up with her bookish tomboyness, and Harry was looked at on so many levels that his appearance was just not the main attraction. To me many just don't get past the scar. I think the actors are perfect for both of them.

hmm...Well movie Harry is cute but for me he doesn't have the black hair for green eyes so I don't see him as harry more like well..Dan hehe the harry in my mind well....he's not like physically perfect or anything I go with JKR's description of him but I feel that his eyes and his hair make him have a very striking kind of look to him and I wouldn't call him gorgeous but there would be something about his looks that would draw me to him sigh...if Harry Potter was real...well at least that way i would be the right age to go out with him lol ^-^
Here's a cute picture I found that I would like to share with you guys that I always found extremely adorable and if Harry Potter was made into an Anime cartoon I would love for them to look like this

I'm sure Harry has to be fairly good-loking. He's famous, but he still has to have some good looks for girls to want to date him. Being famous isn't enough. If Tom Cruise were ugly, would anyone still want to date him?
I think that there would be SOME people who'd date Tom Cruise even if he was ugly! He's totally loaded and that does appeal to a lot of people. Look how many young women who marry men as old as their grandfathers.
Anyway . . . I always pictured Harry as normal looking, and always presumed some girls were attracted to him, because he was famous and does brave deeds. . . . . I can't really say what governs the rules of attractions, though I do believe that people date for reasons other than the way the other looks.

Hear, hear. There are quite a few famous people who are not really all that good-looking, feature for feature, but who are attractive to others at least in part because of their fame. (I could name one famous actor whom I don't consider a particularly attractive physical specimen, but I fear members of the S.S.A.S. would brain me on the spot.) :D

I think that by the media's standards, Harry is rather plain. I think of many people as being physically beautiful and no one else seems to notice them. I do tend to stare at people too much though. Anyway, I think Harry is good looking- in other words not a mutant like Ron probably is (I always picture Ron being extremely gawky). I think Harry probably has a lot of charisma too. James was good looking wasn't he, and Harry looks just like him......

I suspect you're right about the charisma. He has a different kind than James, though. James had that "brilliant athlete golden boy" thing going. Harry doesn't. He's more of the tragic, brooding type--the kind you just want to hug for no particular reason. Also, it's his coloring that makes him striking. Black hair and emerald green eyes are not common, and when set in a thin, pale face, the effect is...striking. I've never thought of him as someone handsome, but more the type of person you would notice. He's got an intensity and an air of secrecy to him.
And while I love Dan, I will agree that he's too muscular to really be Harry. Oh well...:P

Hmm I think this depends on your interpretation of hat. When I read the books I always pictured Harry as cute going on hot. Then when the movie came out, that's what did it for me. I thought Dan was identical. Instant adoration for Dan. The dishelved hair and green eyes gets anyone hooked.
But who is hotter? Alas do we choose between him or James?

Lets analise him by analysing the girls in Hogwarts. Most of them were not at all interested in him as a boy - yet he was famous, a terrific quidditch-player.
Krum as another example was belegeured - yet he didnt have the looks.
Yes, Potter did had female friends and female admirers - but coming in a horde they did first when he was their ticket to the yule interschool bal.
Of course, 11-12 years girls are perhaps not so interested in famous guys as 14-year girls. And 14 years girls usually are not interested in 11-12 years boys.
So I say like most others: normal, but a little below average - definitely not over average.
Probably he get better looks as older as more mature and more sure of himself - and with better clothes.

I never really pictured Harry being unnattractive. I always had this image of him being pretty much normal, but as he grows up in the books, he becomes more attractive in my eyes, for he is developing as any teenaged boy should. However, given his parents, I cannot see him as anything short of nice on the eyes. Then again, I picture most male characters sort of androgynous, which would make them rather attractive in my eyes anyway. This goes hardcore for Draco, as I picture his entire family as the epitome of beauty...;;>.>

See, the problem is that people have wildly differing ideas of what's attractive. Like, to me, someone with messy black hair, emerald eyes and clear skin would be attractive unless he has some kind of strikingly ugly feature.
As for the girls--I think Harry is more or less oblivious to them. I mean, most 11-14 year old boys don't have very active love lives, and when Harry was 15, everyone in the school thought he was a lunatic, even if he had been in the state of mind for romance.
Also, JKR did say somewhere that Dan is "very much as I imagine Harry." hm...
I guess we'll never really know, though.

I always took the comments about looks, from other students, as being jealous bites trying to hurt rather than being serious descriptions of flaws. Like when Pansy calls Hermoine ugly. I still say they are just not traditionally model cute but that the are attractive as individuals. And Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt both are totally awful neither is very cute and I always watch a persons demeanor and both just seem like they aren't that great. Pitt's body was ok in Troy but that head sitting on top just doesn't work with it.

Anyone else notice Harry goes through a fairly major growth spurt between the beginning of GoF and OotP? He starts out smaller than average but by Snape's Worst Memory he's described as being within an inch of his father's height at fifteen, and his father is tall and thin. So by the start of HBP he's probably close to six feet tall (while Ron is about six foot four).

Yeah I noticed it too. In the first chapter Jo describes him as someone who had 'grown a lot in a short span of time'. So I don't think you can call him 'scrawny' any more. And all that Quidditch should have payed off. He's probably a little on the thin side, but not overly so.
I wouldn't classify Harry as 'unattractive', or even 'average'. Infact, he could as well be better-looking than all the boys in his year. His features do set him apart and make him worth atleast a second glance. Now if only he'd get rid of his glasses and the baggy clothes, and get a normal life...

I'm positive that Harry is good looking - look at who he got his looks from. However, I wouldn't call him attractive, because I don't think he is. While he and James had almost the exact same looks when they were the same age, I think James is much more attractive because of the way he is from what we've seen.

Um with the ghetto glasses Im sure not many superficial girls take a second look at him but I think he'd be an ok looking kid. Maybe the kind of guy youd have to know him before you thought him handsome

Oh, Harry's certainly not ugly. The messy dark hair and the big green eyes - rather cute. He's better looking than the other Gryffindor boys at least (well, maybe not Seamus ;) ). Sirius is the greatest looker of them all though.
LOL...
I rather think Harry has what it takes - he kind of needs a makeover - something that would bring out the better side of him ...
Even though - I happen to agree with you - the natural green-eyed, messed-up hair is great...
