View Full Version : Where does OotP rank in your top five?

1. Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Goblet of Fire
3. Sorceror's Stone
4. Chamber of Secrets
5. Order of the Phoenix
I was very disappointed in this book. While it was well-written and therefore a good read, I felt like it was much ado about nothing. I felt like 500 or so of the pages were just a complete waste.
There were some memorable things that prevented the time invested from being a total waste. JKR getting me to hate Umbridge so fiercely and then getting to enjoy her comeuppance. ;) I just wish she had been brutally slaughtered.
I even felt like Dumbledore's "big speech" explained very little. If he told Harry "everything", I think I must have missed it.
Maybe after a 2nd read it will move up my personal list.

Almost the same...
1. PoA
2. GoF
3. Ss
4. OotP
5. CoS
No romance (except Cho), lame prophecy thing, DD speech so non-epic....others
But the book was still good and a wealth of info. Who ever posted the comment that this was like Empire STrikes back for Harry Potter has made me feel alot better. I think thats a perfect analogy and this book is a character driven stepping stone to 6,7.

I liked this book a lot. There was so much hype around it, it was very easy to expect unreal things from it, but regardless, I thought it was the best. It was darker, which I liked, and I felt it really supported the entire series, rather than being a nice, wrapped up, stand-alone story. I liked that too.

It's too early for me to decide, I have to read it at least 5 more time and then run through the whole series a couple of times. Only then can I properly compare it to the other 4 books.

4. tie - OotP and PoA
I think when the series is done this book will be known as sort of an intermission or a set up for the final push. The connecting link between the first four (mostly about Harry's development) and the last two (presumably about the war and Harry's role in it).
There wasn't as singular a plot in this book as any of the others. the 1st was the introduction obviously with the Stone storyline to give it some substance and direction. The 2nd was all about the Chamber of Secrets, the 3rd all about the Prisoner of Azkaban, and the 4th was the TriWizard Tournament. All very defined plots. These all more or less served to mold Harry in some way. Now the OotP sets up what Harry is going to have to do with all that he has learned. So I don't really see this as an "Empire Strikes Back" kind of story. More like Easter break before the final exam. The next two books should be pretty intense.

Goblet of Fire remains my absolute favourite, but Order of the Phoenix had so much action and it's a very close second. Prisoner of Azkaban was great so it's thrid for me. Chamber of Secrets and Philosopher's Stone are great too, but they're too short for me now. So they're very close with Chamber of Secrets just winning out of the two.

POA introduces Lupin, dementors, marauders map and has a complete story in it
GOF because of the Triwizard tournament (not the quidditch world cup) and Mad eye moody.
COS again a complete story
OOTP just an episode no clear start, it continues from GOF and leaves too many questions
PS great appetiser

PoA and OotP are very tight and solid stories. But I love the angst in PoA more so than in OotP. Goblet of Fire flounders a bit more than SS/PS but has a much stronger ending, and that's why it beat out SS/PS.
CoS just seemed to drag on endlessly for me...

It's hard for me to put these in order, because I hate having to put one last. I have to say that there is not a single book in this series that I didn't like -- they're all dear to me. But, if I had to put them in order, it would go:
-OotP = PoA (at the moment, I really can't decide which I like more)
-CoS
-SS
-GoF (still love it, though!)

I'm sorry, although I still loved OotP, it just was lacking a couple things. Some of them, I can't put my finger on. For example, the standard talk with DD at the end always gives me some kind of closure and understanding. This time, all I learned is a "Prophecy" that I figured out four books ago, and why DD didn't make Harry a Prefect (okay, so it still made me cry)...

Well, I'm an older reader and I put OotP last on my list.
While I appreciate the maturation of the series, I just feel like nothing really happened until late in the book. It really is a table-setter for the last 2 books and there are some significant character-driven things revealed. I'm just afraid JKR has written herself into either having to reveal too much too quickly in the next 2 books or outright leaving a lot of things unanswered.
I'm sure my opinion of the book will change on successive reads or if it comes to pass that it was necessary to make 6 and 7 into the great books we hope they will be.

There were some definite flaws in this book, but it was strung together pretty well and was pretty impressive. It has the most big mistakes, but a lot of good, key things to say for it. I found the characters more interesting this time around, which was a definite plus. Rowling's out of her stage of "beginner's luck" and out of the stage where she's playing around with her skill, and she's starting to conquer the field. The book was a bit of an intermission, but I expect that in bigger series - you have to have something to build on before you can build, and you need to get all that stuff somewhere.

Chamber of Secrets and Sorcerer's stone are tied, I think I like Chamber of Secrets just a TINY bit more than the Sorcerer's stone, and as for the Order of the Phoenix, well, I think I'll have to read it a few more times before I decide where I'm going to put it. Either before or after Chamber of Secrets and Sorcerer's Stone. It was kinda depressing, especially since my favorite character died. Harry didn't seem like himself, AT ALL, and personally I don't like his attitude (at least towards his friends!) at all. :\

It is SO hard to rank these books! On one hand, I'd like to rank them like this:
1. PS/SS (Our first glimpse into Harry's world!)
2. PoA
3. OotP
4. CoS
5. GoF
But that seems wrong because Gof and Cos are tied, in my opinion. Actually, I might make it a three way tie:
1. PoA
2. OotP
3: GoF, SS/PS, CoS
It's just too hard!

I just wasn't really fully satisfied with OOTP. Sure, it satisfied my hunger for Harry Potter enough, but it left me with a lot more questions then answers. I had been promised that we would find out so much about Harry and his eyes, etc. but almost all of Dumbledore's talk was a recollection of what Harry had done. The thing that surprised me the most was that Harry's eyes weren't even mentioned once in the book. I don't know what JKR was playing at, but she better put some prologue saying something to the effect like..."sorry, my dear fans, who expected so much information and got nothing"
No i don't really want her to do that but i was still really disappointed

OotP---the wit of this book is what put it over PoA
PoA---the best plot line by far
GoF---awsume ending...incredible twist, but the plot wasn't as compact as other books.
SS---good in its own right, but simplistic compared to other books.
CoS----entirely too much Lockhart and Dobby!

My fav. list:
1. Prisoner of Azkaban- liked this one the best because it introduces Black and Lupin, two of fav. characters, and the story is just top notch. Also, gives more info. about my absolute favorite character, Snape.
2. Sorcerer's Stone- I really liked this one because it was the one that started it all. You get to see Harry being taken away from the Dursleys to a world above and beyond anything he could have imagined before. It just gives me such a rush to read that, to imagine such escape. That's what I love so much about the Potter books.
3. Order of the Phoenix - Even though, in my opinion, it didnt progress the story much, I still really liked it, and will probably like it more and more when I read it again. We find out alot of information on different characters (although Ron and Hermione dont seem to develop much), and realize some characters are not as we suspected.
4. Goblet of Fire - This and OotP were very close on my list, so close, in fact, that they could probably be interchangebale. Again, we find out more about the characters, but nothing about this one really caught my interest as much as PoA or SS.
5. Chamber of Secrets - My least favorite. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE all the HP books, but this one was the least interesting to me. I thought the strory was a bit lame, and again, like GoF, nothing in this book piqued (not sure if thats the right word) my interest enough to make it a favorite of mine. Still really good though.

1. PoA- it introduces 2 of my favorite characters, Sirius and Lupin, and I like the messages it has about death and fear.
2. OotP- I like how the characters develop, and it was so suspenseful I literally had a stomachache while reading it. It reveals a lot about some characters. I also like JKR's message about death in this book.
3. CoS- I like the message of good and evil, and the choices we make. It's not as complex as some of the others but I still think it's really important for the series.
4. GoF- It was ok, I think I just read it too much and got bored of the whole tournament thing. It used to be favorite; I still like the complexity of it.
5. SS/PS- Although it introduces Harry's world, I like the others better than this one because it's so simple, and seems like a little kid's book to me. The others don't.

1) Book #1
2) Book #5
3) Book #2
4) Book # 3
5) Book #4
Book number one is my favriote because.. I dunno.. Its the original one that Rowling spent the most thoughtful time on (5 years) and she spilled the most original ideas that got us hooked in the first place into it :)
Book number 5 because I think it had a very frustrating plot that you just had to find out. The begining was dull because of him being stuck in the ootP so long.
Book number 2 because its so suspencsefull! Whats happening? Who did this? etc. The dissapearing diary words, moaning murtle, its all so original and pure!
Book number 3, I dont remember anything from it ^-^''''' Its been so long. lol..
Book number 4 was the most dreary because, though I love all the books, I just like the other ones BETTER. I still like this one alot. I dunno, I supose if I re-red them all this list would be totally diffrent ^-~

OotP, while I loved the read, and though we received a lot more information, it feels almost like a bit of a waste of space. A lot of it is (so far seemingly) unnecesary. PoA is still my favourite, GoF is 2nd because of the great story, then OotP, PS, CoS respectively. I still love them all though.

1-Prisioner of Azkaban
I loved this book it will always be number one for me. It was also the book in which Sirius was introduce and he is my favourite. I love all the twist and turns the plot took.
2-Order Of the Phoeonix
This book was to me very good. I did not find anything dissapointing about it. Maybe it's because when I read the book I made myself blank out all the news I had read about the plots and so read it not asking for much. The last few chapters were the best I could not put the book down and I wanted to find out what would happen. It was also very sad, seeing Nevile's parents and Sirius's death and many other events.
3-Goblet Of Fire
Good book and the story was very exciting. The part when Harry finds out about Neville's parents was sad. I liked this book because it kept me wanting to read more.

1. POA
Many things actually, The Dementors, Sirius, the DADA lessons with Lupin..
2. GOF
The continuing maturing of the characters, the prologue.. etc.
3. TOOTP
Great read, although to much emphasis was put on Harries "teenage" devolpment IMHO. But in Umbridge it's got one of the best villains.
4. HPATPS
The introduction is great. But all in all it is what it is set out to be, an introduction to a continuing story.
5. TCOS
My least favourite as a book. It has got the most humour, but it also has the most irritating dobby scenes one can imagine.
I liked the way Dobby was represented in the movie because it made him more of a commical sidekick in stead of a irritating ranting houseelf.

1. OotP - just packed with information, Harry's growing up, very differently written, darker at times but funnier at time... just an excellent book! Doesn't hurt that it's nearly 800 pages, either (I have the British edition).
2. GoF - same as above... I loved the Quidditch World Cup, and a lot of things come out that we weren't expecting. Lots of action.
3. CoS - I just loved the plot, it was easily the best plot of them all. I loved the whole idea of the chamber. I liked that things were new but not too new... it's close to tying with GoF.
4. PoA - I don't get what everyone's raving about, it would've been my least favourite if PS wasn't there. The Dementors and Lupin were a nice touch, though.
5. PS - I just reread it and I can see so many difference between it and the other four. It doesn't even seem like JKR's writing! JKR says something and then goes into detail, but in PS nothing is too "explained". It's always great, though, to see Harry, Ron, and Hermione come into Hogwarts and the wizarding world for the first time, though, and I can really feel what it would be like if it was me. Basically this is my least favourite because it wasn't that detailed. Other than that PoA would've been my least favourite.

This is so difficult! I love the entire series so much that I feel bad placing some higher than others. There were both good and bad parts to each of them, but I guess mine would be:
1. Prisoner of Azkaban (Great story, fantastic ending, and we meet Remus :crush: )
2. Goblet of Fire (The plot twists were awesome, but Remus wasn't in it!)
3. Order of the Phoenix (Suspenseful and dark, but it seems like we didn't learn much that we already didn't know)
4. Chamber of Secrets and Sorcerer's Stone (They were both wonderful, but too short compared to the others!)

Yes, I agree about the PoA. It was the first book in the chat that was a little darker; we found out a lot about Harry's dad and met his best friends from school. It was also the book that introduced Lupin and Sirius, many people's favorite characters. After the PoA I liked the OotP best. It was probably the most emotionally realistic book, and I liked Harry's occasional outbursts and encounters with Cho (those were so funny...). Neville and Ginny's characters were developed more as well.
So, here's my order:
1. Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Order of the Phoenix

I like Prisoner of Azkaban, too. (hehehe) It was one of the more er...positive books. And it had the most Quidditch. =D
This is my rating:
1.) Prisoner of Azkaban
2.) Chamber of Secrets
3.) Goblet of Fire
4.) Order of the Phoenix
5.) Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone

Oh my God!! And I was thinking that I was the only one that liked most Prisioner of Azkaban (I'm so silly...). Here is my order (note that I've only read book 5 one time, so it probably will change...)
1. Prisioner of Azkaban
2. Goblet of Fire

3. Goblet of Fire
4. Sorcerer's Stone
5. Chamber of Secrets
There's my rating! Five and Three are actually really, really close, but I like Harry better in the fifth. The third does have a much better climax (I thought ending of OotP was the worst of the series), and much more Lupin. I guess I am still giddy at finally having OotP, but I really did love it.

I think the fourth and fifth book are really verbally over expressed.
The first book however, was verbally under expressed.
The third and the second book were just right~
But the second one was not as good as the third~
Therefore, the third one is the best~

Order of the Phoenix is my favorite. I can relate to Harry's attitude more. Not the yelling and the capitalization as much as his new drive. In the other books he was sort of going through everything blindly. That's not how I function, I need to be in-the-know. I would have demanded answers from the begining.
Anyways so my favorite is OotP followed by PoA.

(1) PoA
(2) OotP
(3) GoF
(4) CoS
(5) PS/SS
Of course, I love all of them, and I'm still debating wether or not the last half of my list is correct...I know, I'm weird. ^.^ I guess we'll never know!

3. Order of the Phoenix
4. Sorcerer's Stone
5. Chamber of Secrets
OotP was very good, especially with Tonks and other new characters [some mentioned in other books] were introduced. But I'd have to go with GoF for first because of all the excitement, and then Prisoner of Azkaban... because, well, who can't love all of the mysterious stuff going on about the Marauder's and stuff... and it's where Lupin first comes out! :p

I would almost have a tie between OotP/PoA but the Time-Turner ending of PoA didn't satisfy me as much as the extremely poignant ending of OotP. But OotP took such a long time to get to the good stuff... I love GoF because of the Triwizard Tournament, all the changing relationships, and the wonderful ending. But I adore PoA because Sirius and Lupin are my favorite characters, and it was just such a wonderful story.

I ranked Sorcerer's Stone last because compared to the other four books, it seems to lack action. Chamber of Secrets ranked fourth only because it was too short. I feel the same about Order of the Phoenix and Goblet of Fire, but I ranked OotP lower that GoF only because I was upset by the death in OotP, and I didn't learn as much as Ii expected I would. And ranking first is Prisoner of Azkaban. I like it more than the others because it was more of a "mystery". Oh, and PoA is where we first learn about the Marauders. ;)

1. Prisoner of Azkaban
2. OotP (I loved this book but I couldn't rank the book that killed Sirius over the one that introduced him)
3. Chamber of Secrets
4. Goblet of Fire (I actually enjoyed it more than CoS but the whole Portkey thing was SO contrived that the more I think about it the less I like it)
5. Sorceror's Stone-but I loved all of them! It's hard putting the first one last, but looking back in comparison, it was the least of five GREAT books!

I enjoyed all of the books, but Pheonix to me felt rushed (someone might have said that, im just 2 lazy 2 read them all) when Dumbledore told him "everything" i think he could have told him more, and most parts didnt even fit.
And PoA is still, and always will b the best

I have to say that the books take turns being my favorite. Sometimes I love SS/PS and read it over and over until I can't stand it and sometimes it's COS or POA or GOF, I just haven't become attatched to OOTP yet, so for me as of now its:
1.GOF
2.POA
3.COS
4.SS/PS
5.OOTP

1. GOF
2. OOTP
3. POA
4. COS
5. PS/SS
i think most people hove chosen to put SS/PS at the bottom of their fav's because it is the book most popular due to the film and merchandising, making it become boring.
in my eyes GOF was an exellent book, full of new ideas and an original plotline. OOTP, i think was fairly boring and different to JK's other books, it was a darker book and wasnt very exiting to read. it was very depressing and wasnt relieved by any happiness.
however i hope jk writes long books like GOF and OOTP and i think if she had the chance she would add mroe to PS/SS COS and POA as they are very short compared to the recent 2
