View Full Version : Who did you think was going to die?
June 30th, 2003, 6:11 pm
ok, we all know who died in OOTP. I heard it on the radio before the book was released, that JK cried while writing the scene. With that in mind, who did you think would die while reading the book.
In the starting of the book, I thought it would be Mrs. Weasley, because she was so stressed out, and upset. Surely she would of been hurt protecting everyone. Then I thought it would be Herminioe (whoops) because she got hit with that curse. But in fact I was wrong.
Who did you think would go?
June 30th, 2003, 6:33 pm
Before I started the book I thought it was going to be Dennis or Collin Creevey.
June 30th, 2003, 6:34 pm
I was pretty sure it would have been Hagrid or Dumbledore. If Dumbledore had died, I would have definitely cried. He symbolises peace and tranquility which would have ultimately disrupted books 6 and 7 and made them really dark. I didn't upset me much that Sirius died. I had heard he died before I read it and wasn't too bothered when I came to that part of the book.
June 30th, 2003, 6:41 pm
I saw a spoiler. The first one was okay; it only gave hint. 'It's a guy who first comes out in PoA, it's one of Harry's fans' I thought....Sirius or Lupin??? Then I saw another spoiler that said "scroll down if you want to know who dies' I clicked it out of curiousity. I closed my eyes; then I made up my mind to not see the spoiler. I opened them and started to click on the back button, when I noticed the person who posted the spoiler did not post the spoiler to scroll down. At the bottom of the screen I saw ; 'It's Sirius"
June 30th, 2003, 6:47 pm
Gee, that sucks. I always try not to look at spoilers but can't help myself. Eventually I do and then feel like a total sh*t for having done so. But I was told by a friend who was flipping through my copy of the book and blurted it out. I didn't believe them but it turned out that she was telling the truth. Ah well, it didn't affect me too much anyway.
June 30th, 2003, 6:50 pm
Before reading the book, I thought that Hagrid was going to die. But when I got about halfway through the book, I decided that Mrs. Weasley was the person who would most likely kick the bucket. I never even suspected Sirius :'(
June 30th, 2003, 6:50 pm
Before I started reading I was so convinced that it would be Malfoy, since J.K. said it would be a key character. Then I heard that the death would cause problems with the school as to who the headmaster would be (I must have heard that wrong!), and I thought "well since Malfoy's dad has a lot of power maybe he'll be the new headmaster since his son died?" But then when I was about halfway done reading the book I saw a pretty obvious spoiler, so that kinda ruined it for me. :(
June 30th, 2003, 6:56 pm
Actually, Sirius had been my number one choice of who would probably die for weeks prior to the release of OotP. However, in all honesty, once I began reading, I must have changed my mind 4 or 5 times--I know I thought Mrs. Weasley, Mr. Weasley, Hagrid, Hermione and Neville at different points in the book. But, once Harry began having the dream of Sirius being tortured, I knew it was him. Then, shortly before his death, I accidentally turned a couple of pages too far and immediately my eyes focused in on the line: SHE KILLED SIRIUS! Yeah, that pretty much bummed me out. It really sucks to be right sometimes.
June 30th, 2003, 7:06 pm
I was so sure it would be Hagrid or Mrs. Weasley.
Sirius came out of nowhere for me; I automatically assumed that his story was bound to go somewhere right until the end of the series. There was just so much to write about him. I must have gone through every other character and pondered their chances of dying EXCEPT Sirius. :(
Luckily, I started to expect it right before it actually happened in the book. My mom peeked ahead and told me that I would be extremely surprised when I found out who died, and, as my mom is a Sirius fangirl , it became pretty clear judging by how upset she was that it was Sirius. I was only slightly prepared when I read it, because I still didn't believe that Sirius could possibly get killed off.
June 30th, 2003, 7:07 pm
June 30th, 2003, 7:15 pm
I was so convinced it would be
SNAPE..or SIRIUS.....or HAGRID...
But to be honest....I always thought Snape was the one to die.....
June 30th, 2003, 8:04 pm
Before I started, I thought it would be Hagrid. While reading, I thought it was going to be Mr. Weasley, and then Sirius after Harry's vision of him being tortured.
June 30th, 2003, 8:14 pm
I thought it was going to be Ginny. I didn't read any spoilers, and I was so shocked. I thought it was a joke when I read the part when Sirius fell behind the veil
June 30th, 2003, 8:15 pm
I thought it was going to be Hagrid... although whilst reading through the book I thought it was going to be many others as well!
June 30th, 2003, 8:16 pm
Before I read the books I thought it was going to be either Hagrid or maybe Mrs Weasley. Then as Hagrid was missing from most of the start of the book I didn't think it was going to be him and after Arthur got attacked I knew it wouldn't be Molly as we had already seen the Weasley's grief.
To tell the truth from about Christmas on I had the dread in the pit of my stomach that it was going to be Sirius. The relationship between him and Harry was being built up so much that I felt sure that it was going to be him. When Hermione got hit by the curse I did think for a second that it was her and I lost the run of myself for awhile! But no, I knew it was going to be Sirius for most of the book.
June 30th, 2003, 8:17 pm
I was absolutely sure it would be Hagrid. I don't know why, but that's what I always thought. I thought he would come back from his journey and fall down dead on the Hogwarts ground or something dramatic..
So when he didn't return I was quite worried.
But when Mr. Weasley got attacked I thought it would be Mr. Weasley dying.
I never thought it would be Sirius. If Hagrid or Mr Weasley died I would have been much more upset I think, now Sirius death didn't bother me.
July 1st, 2003, 11:52 pm
I thought either Hagrid or Mrs. Weasley. I was so sure it would be one of them! Then I heard a spoiler lie on Mugglenet, and thought it may be Fred, but it was a lie, obviously, as I said. I heard that bookies were taking bets on who would die, and the odds were for Hagrid 7:1!!
July 1st, 2003, 11:54 pm
I was pretty sure it was going to be hagrid!--but I was wrong
Padfoot still lives within us all
July 1st, 2003, 11:58 pm
I thought it was going to be Hagrid (before the book came out that is). And now that I know who died........I wish it had been Hagrid.
July 2nd, 2003, 12:06 am
I enjoyed contemplating who would be the one to die. But I was more than cautious to watch out for spoilers. I really like reading things for myself.
But anyway, I had three different people.
Sirius-When JKR said a fan of Harry's dies, I thought of him instantly. But he was already my favourite character, so I refused to believe it. I eventually talked myself out of it somehow. Just like in the book, its hard to believe something when you don't want it to be true.
Neville-I sincerely thought it was gonna be Neville who hit the bucket. (sorry to be short with that). But the way the first four books are written, it builds a hype around NEville in so many directions. I knew Neville would HAVE to do something spectacular or amazing in the future. Just instinct, and in the sense of being spectacular I was right. But I thought as a result of his achievement he would die. That part I was wrong about. Although it was a close call. But I am glad it wasn't him, because he's such a sweetheart,
Hagrid-probably because I don't like him much at all, so part of me hoped it would be him because I could have tolerated losing him.
Although once I started reading, I began to lean towards Percy or Luna being the ones.
July 2nd, 2003, 12:14 am
Somewhere in the midst of this book, I got the distinct impression that Sirius was going to die. There were just so many warnings about how he would be in trouble if he left his house. I wasn't convinced that he was going to die but I wasn't shocked when it happened.
July 2nd, 2003, 12:18 am
When I first heard that someone died in the book I thought it would be Hagrid. When I started reading the book I got the feeling it would be Sirus and kept hoping it wasn't going to be him. It couldn't be him I kept thinking to myself. I thought it was Mr. Weasley when he was attacked. I was so sad when it was Sirus :'(
July 2nd, 2003, 12:41 am
I was almost positive it was Hagrid. But when i was thinking about it, in the fourth book, they built up the death so much, and then it turned out to be someone that I barely remembered from PoA, so I thought it might no tbe someone as pivitol as Sirius. I was shocked.
July 2nd, 2003, 12:59 am
I believed most of the rumor and thought it was gonna be Percy but *sigh* I guess not, she killed off my favorite character instead, I did not see it coming at all, absolutely not.
July 2nd, 2003, 1:15 am
About a week before the book came out I *knew* it would be Hagrid or Dumbledore. The day before the book came out I was *certain* it would be Molly Weasley.
Sirius was probably the very last person (apart from Harry, Ron and Hermione) that I would have expected. I didn't even think it would be him when Harry had the vision of him being tortured - I thought it was a red herring.
July 2nd, 2003, 1:17 am
I thought Lupin or one of the Weasleys.
July 2nd, 2003, 1:28 am
As soon as I heard that the death would be "horrible to write", I knew it was Sirius. I don't know why, really, other than the fact that he was too good to be true for Harry and couldn't last. He was pretty much a cure-all for him, and you can't keep that going for the whole series. Hagrid was a fan, and I thought it might be him dfor about 5 minutes, but I just didn't see it happening...
July 2nd, 2003, 2:19 am
I really thought it was going to be Hagrid. But i was proven wrong. When Madam Maxime was already home and Hagrid wasn't i was already thinking that he has already died.
July 2nd, 2003, 2:25 am
First I thought Hagrid...Then I thought Mr. Weasley...Then I thought maybe Hermione? Then I knew it was Sirius, when the number of chapters left was growing smaller and it said that Sirius was the only one left dueling (with Bellatrix...) :'(

But he was already my favourite character, so I refused to believe it. I eventually talked myself out of it somehow. Just like in the book, its hard to believe something when you don't want it to be true.
I thought that Hagrid was going to die, because I immediately thought of him as a fan of Harry's. Then I thought Sirius, and for the reasons KeliSiTing said, I somehow mentally blocked that idea out of my mind.
Before I read the book, Ginny Weasley and Hagrid were my top two candidates for death. When I began to read the book, I started thinking Ron would die, even though I knew it wouldn't be Ron or Hermione. There was a point I though Mr. Weasley would die, and another point I actually thought it would be Dumbledore, Snape, or McGonnagal. Once Harry dreamt of the attack on Sirius, I knew it'd be him <tear>.
July 2nd, 2003, 2:34 am
I thought it was gonna be Lupin or Hagrid. I read ahead of the book cause I was soooo determined to find out who died and saw that same line, "She killed Sirius" but even when I read that, I still didn't think he was actually dead, maybe something happened and he wasn't dead... I just didn't see how JK could kill him off. Harry had no one, then Sirius came into play, made things better for Harry. Didn't think it would be fair at all to kill him off. Harry really needs him. It just sucks that he had to die I suppose.
July 2nd, 2003, 3:16 am
These are the people, in order, that I thought would die while reading the book.
Ginny: I only hoped she would die because I had been a Harry/Cho shipper and wanted to stop people believing she and Harry would hook up. After this book I've changed my logic completely and am glad Ginny is still around.
Mrs. Weasley: She just seemed like such a likely canadate and it fit in with all the rumours.
Cho: When Harry started dating Cho I thougtht that she might be the one to die. Though now it would make me happy to see her go.
Sirius: At this point in the book, my friend called saying she had finished the book and the the death was horrible letting slip that it was a guy AND was worse then the entire Weasley family dieing. This totally threw me and I had to drop all of my previous predictions. I figured that only one of these three guys would be worse then the entire Weasley family. I guessed that Sirius would be the only one worse then the Weasley family because I had just fallen in love with him.
Lupin, Snape, Doby: After I told my friend who I thought it was she said I was wrong (oviously to throw me off). So these guys were the ones I guessed instead.
Even when Sirius fell through the veil I didn't belive he had died because of what my friend had said. It took me until the end of the book to relize my new favorite character wasn't coming back
July 2nd, 2003, 3:25 am
Would there be someone who is going to die in book 6? If there would be one then i think its going to be Hagrid or one of the advance guards. Maybe Kingsley Shacklebolt or anyone. Or it may be Lupin who is following the trails of the other marauders. But i hope it's not him. I don't want him to die anyways.
July 2nd, 2003, 3:32 am
I was totally shocked. Going into the book, I thought for sure Hagrid was going to get it. Not that it never crossed my mind that sirius would die, I just dismissed the idea as it would just be too cruel for Harry (and well me too). The whole scene leading up to it I was just waiting for Neville to die. Then all of a sudden, there goes Sirius. I couldn't believe it.
Eventhough in all fairness, thinking back on it, i think that instints told me he would be the one, but I was just refusing to believe it.
July 2nd, 2003, 3:52 am
I thought Hagrid had been killed by the centaurs when the book said that birds flew high out of the forest as if the tallest tree had fallen.

Nope, that was just Gwaup.:D
July 2nd, 2003, 4:30 am
Hmm. I must re-read it then.
I thought it was talking about the emotional connection between Harry and Hagrid. Like the baby chick that decides the hound dog is it's mom because it is the first thing it sees out of it's shell, Hagrid was the first magical person Harry met.
I have almost convinced myself that Harry would have reacted more harshly towards Hagrid's death than to Sirius's.
July 2nd, 2003, 5:07 am
I had figured Hagrid or Mr. Weasley before I read the book, leaning toward Hagrid. But once Mr. Weasley was attacked I knew it wasn't him, and since Hagrid was getting the crud beat out of him I figured it wasn't him. From then on, I never had a definte person.
Sirius really threw me though. I figured JKR wouldn't kill his Godfather. He was the closest thing Harry had ever had to a parent. (he even says so in GoF) I never thought she would be that cuttthroat. :(
July 2nd, 2003, 5:09 am
I was pretty certain it was going to be Hagrid or Dumbledore, so I got quite a shock when Sirius kicked it...
July 2nd, 2003, 5:56 am
before starting the book, i really didnt wanna think about it too much. then i started it. first i thought it would be mrs. weasley. then i thought it would be any one of the weasleys because, u know, of that part where molly was tryin to tackle a boggart, and really couldnt, and corpses of like ron, arthur, harry, ginny, etc. started appearing. then i thought it would be arthur weasley for sure because of that very suspenseful part in which he got bitten by a snake. then i kinda thought it would be sirius black when it came to that part in which harry dreams he's about to get attacked by voldie. i wasnt as convinced with the possibility of sirius dying as my earlier guesses because i thought he was too important to harry to die. i didnt think rowling would be cruel enough to take his beloved godfather away from him. ok, so then came the part of ron, herm, harry, luna, neville and ginny going to the ministry of magic to try to save sirius. i was ever-so-happy when they found out sirius wasnt bout to be attacked after all; he was never at the ministry in the first place. then there came the battle between the 6 hogwarts students, and a group of death eaters, and i guessed it would either ron, herm, neville or ginny.
like a friend told me prior to me finishing the book, rowling does an awesome job on making ppl guess who's gonna die. one moment, u'd think it would be this man. then u change ur prediction to this other person, u get convinced it would be him/her. then BAM! ur wrong...
Sigh...the death of sirius black was so devastating...it just happened...i seriously believed things could not get any worse for harry...he went through a terrible amount of ordeal already...he lost his parents...surely fate would not take away the next best person to being his real father?? *sniffs* :( :( :(
July 2nd, 2003, 6:16 am
I was almost positive it would be Hagrid.
One, because I had a hunch Harry would learn about his destiny in this book and Hagrid represents his introduction into the wizarding world, which is now over.
Two, because I couldn't help but think about the epilogue or future of all the characters in the story. If the Order/HRH is successful, I thought hagrid's greatest reward to be cleared of all charges and made a Hogwarts teacher...well already happened.
Three, I thought (and this is still a possibility) that Hagrid would go down the only way he would want to go down, giving his life to save Dumbledore's or Harry's. I would be interested/intrigued to see a situation is Book 6 or 7 where Dumbledore shows some sign of weakness or vulnerability and Hagrid jumps in front of the curse to save him.
July 2nd, 2003, 6:38 am
ok i did not expect it 2 be sirius it was such a suprise! i was crying my eyes out wen i read it, i didnt think it would be such an important person who would die. i thought it would seamus or sum1 like that.
July 2nd, 2003, 6:49 am
I was pretty sure it was going to be Hagrid and half way through the books when he appeared to become more and more injured I figured I was going to be right and then of course JK pulled one from left field :D
July 2nd, 2003, 6:56 am
My fear was Mrs. Weasley. My hope was Hagrid or Sirius. By the time the kids boarded the Hogswart Express I was convinced it would be Sirius, but Harry's vision of Mr. Weasley and the blood had me gnawing a knuckle for a few pages.
July 2nd, 2003, 2:39 pm
My money was on poor Neville. I am glad he's still around because he so very sweet. For adults, I would have guessed Hagrid. I really didn't even think of Sirius.
July 2nd, 2003, 3:03 pm
Before I started the book, I was guessing people left right and centre, because I had absolutely no idea.
Reading the book: at first I thought it'd be Molly, then I thought Arthur, then Neville, and Percy, and Hagrid. For a fleeting second, I thought it was Hermione, and then Neville again. About two pages before Sirius fell, I knew it would be him, and I almost couldn't read those pages, I was dreading it that much.
So really I had no idea until just before it happened.
July 2nd, 2003, 3:09 pm
Before the book I, too thought it would be Hagrid, because of hints and also what Robby Coltraine said after the first movie.
Anyhow, starting the book I tried to erase any preconceptions, and just read the book. As the book progressed, I enjoyed it, and at the last battle, I was really worried about first one person and then another possibly buying it. When Sirius actually died, I had to go back and re-read as it was so offhand. It only hit me when Harry started having angst over it.
Now Harry has no godfather, is the Hogsmeade permission cancelled? Will he have to get the Dursleys to sign it for his last two years?
Harry will certainly have a lot more issues over Sirius dying than he ever did with Cedric--and he had a lot of issues with Cedric--still does.
July 2nd, 2003, 3:13 pm
well it seems that everyone has had their own idea on who was going to get it. Anyone else?
July 2nd, 2003, 3:23 pm
Before reading the book, I honestly thought that it was going to be Hagrid. Because Ms. Rowling had said that someone close to Harry would die, I assumed that it would be either Hagrid, Ron, Hermione, Sirius, or Lupin. But for a while I dismissed the idea that anyone but Hagrid could die, as I thought it was too soon to kill either Moony or Padfoot, and too cruel to let Hermione or Ron die.
However, by page 300 of OotP, I had conjectured that poor, reckless Sirius would be the unfortunate.
July 2nd, 2003, 3:26 pm
Well before the book I though Hagrid, but once I saw the first vision I thought it was Mr. Weasley. This could be true since the Weasleys are on the poorer side of wizards and now they have no source to bring in money and it would be totally harsh on all the kids. But then I thought Hermione(they cant kill her off) when she was hit with the purple slash spell, and Neville. But I never suspected Harry's last family to be killed. Atleast his friends are there for him, especially after they get off Hogwarts Express and the Dursleys are waiting for Harry. Mad-Eye, Tonks, adn Lupin are there. I liked that part.
But over all Sirius was a shock to me and I felt really bad. No I feel a had a better connection to him :'( I miss him already!
July 2nd, 2003, 4:10 pm
When I 1st stared reading the book and Hagrid wasnt there I thought it would be him. When I came back I thought it would be Mad-Eye-Moody.
July 2nd, 2003, 6:02 pm
I thought it was gonna be Sirius or Mr. Weasley
July 2nd, 2003, 6:06 pm
I thought Hagrid was going to die scince he didn't come back until so late but when he got back I started thinking that it might be Sirius because he was stuck in that house that he hated. I thought that he might leave the house and do something stupid.
July 2nd, 2003, 8:37 pm
I never saw any spoilers except my friend told me that dumbledore died, I belived her but nope. I Surely thought it was him though. I didnt want it to be sirius. I wish the book would have ended a different way. I feel like im going to break out in tears again now...
July 2nd, 2003, 8:39 pm
But Also, Come To Think Of It, I thought Ron Killed Himself After That First Quidditch Match Because He Sucked So Much At It..I Seriously Thought That It Could Have Been Him For A Moment there...
July 2nd, 2003, 9:42 pm
ever since I knew someone was dying, every time someone was in danger i would think it was him. When Harry walked up and saw what he thought was ron, lying dead. I never thought he was downstairs. then when Hagrid didnt show up and Malfoy was teasing Harry, I thought it was him. Then When Arhtur Weasly was attacked I was almost certain it was him, But when Harry saw Voldemort taunting Sirius, I KNEW it was him, and even when he showed up with the rest of the order, I still had a feeling.....:'(
July 3rd, 2003, 1:15 am
Before reading the book I thought it would be Dumbledore. Whilst reading I started out with Mrs Weasley, then Hagrid, then Sirius and then Neville. Boohoo, it turned out to be my fave charkter!
July 3rd, 2003, 1:59 am
I didnt give it much thinking at all before i read the book but soon as i read that Mr. Weasily was attacked i was sure he was dead. Meh, Guess i was wrong, i would have never ever guessed sirus. Actuually i thought one of the guard on the way to grimauls place was going too die too.
July 3rd, 2003, 2:00 am
hmmm...before starting on the book i couldn't really decide I would say Ginny or Hagrid but I could also tell it wasn't them because Rowling almost always comes up with somethimg no one expected! When I started reading the book I just knew it's gonna be Sirius because of the way she was writting about him and because they had him to stay at home all time! It was like "well since he's not going outside nothing is gonna happen to him" and then something happens...well did you get the point because i am certainly not good in explanations! I was just so sure that it's gonna be him when i started reading although that could also be because that was the thing i was dreading the most....
SIRIUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUS!!!!!!! I love U!!
July 3rd, 2003, 3:21 am
Before I began reading, I was sure that Hagrid would snuff it and was increasingly willing to accept it as his recklessness reached new heights. But, in the middle of the book, I was SURE that Mr. Weasley was done for. So sure, that I went to the very end of the last chapter to see how Molly would handle being a widow and a single mother. Imagine my surprise when I saw Arthur confronting Vernon. Whew! I wasn't nervious about McGonagall, not even when she was hit by the Stunners. That woman could march through walls. I wasn't really concerned about Dumbledore or Hermione (big shock when she was horribly attacked) but I hadn't even CONSIDERED Sirius as a candidate.
July 3rd, 2003, 3:22 am
I thought it might be Hagrid, one of the Trio, or Sirius who'd die.
August 2nd, 2003, 11:29 am
I thought it would either be Dumbledore or Sirius, both are two of my FAVORITE charecters. I hoped I was wrong but in the end I was right. Who did you think it was going to be?
August 2nd, 2003, 11:34 am
i was thinking it was hagrid , in accordance with the rumors regarding the interview with Robbie Coltrane(sp?)
but i was wrong
i believe this topic is being discussed elsewhere, HarrysHogworts. im not entirely sure, but you could try doing a search.
August 2nd, 2003, 11:36 am
I looked briefly for it and I did not see it, maybe its outdated now. Hagrid, that does make sense. Why didnt I think of that! **slaps self**
August 2nd, 2003, 11:47 am
I also thought Hagrid and Dumbledore, but both of those were too obvious...I feel a bit stupid!
August 2nd, 2003, 11:51 am
dumbledore was not that obvious....the story could hardly have made further progress if he were not around....but things would have been only slightly different without hagrid, and also i heard loads of rumors and false spoilers related to his death, so i assumed it were him.
August 2nd, 2003, 11:55 am
Now that I think about it, it would have been unlikley that Hagrid dies (in my opinion). The Order of the Pheonics did not quite patch things up with the Giants. I think that Hagrid will be used in latter books for the purpouse of befriending the giants.
August 2nd, 2003, 12:10 pm
u're right. *darn*stupid of me to believe those rumors......well, i guessi'm happy they turned out to be wrong. i mean, not anything against sirius, but i would have hated to see hagrid die
August 2nd, 2003, 12:26 pm
i thought it was going to be a wealsey at first...and then when arthur was attacked i was almost positive it would be him.....but the clsoer harry got to sirius, i had a strange feeling about it........i did not want to accept it though, because i absolutely LOVE sirius black!!
August 2nd, 2003, 12:31 pm
Your right, a Weasly would have fit the description. I was looking forward to A summer with Harry staying at Sirusis house/cave. After visiting the Dursleys of course.
August 2nd, 2003, 12:34 pm
there was a lot of foreshadowing about sirius' death in the earlier pages of the book....the OMINOUS knife, the passage at the part when harry is boarding the train, cant find the exact quote, i dont have the book on meh rite now.
August 2nd, 2003, 3:40 pm
Before the book's release, I was certain it was going to be Hagrid who died. During my first read, I thought Arthur Weasley might take a turn for the worst in hospital.. then finally I had an inkling that Sirius might be the one. Oh well. :)
August 2nd, 2003, 3:42 pm
Before I read the book, I thought it was gonna be Arthur Weasley, and then when I was reading the part about Arthur getting bitten, I was like "OMG, it is Arthur!" since I'm never right about these things. It looks like I was wrong after all, but why did it have to be Sirius... :(
August 2nd, 2003, 3:48 pm
Another theory I had once I read of Dumbledore leaving is that a student would die. Dumbledore is pretty much the only thing keeping Voldermort directly away from Hogwarts. With him gone I though a student would die, didn't know who though
August 2nd, 2003, 3:56 pm
I was sjust sure it wasn't going to be DD, he is too important, it just wouldn't fit! But then i was also sure it wasn't going to be Sirius, i just didnt think JK would have done that to Harry
August 2nd, 2003, 4:37 pm
I though and hoped that it would be Hagrid. It's ironic because right before the book came out I saw a poll which asked people who they thought would die, and the number one answer was Hagrid, but Sirius was a close second. When I saw the results, I immediately thought that the people who took the poll were insane, Sirius couldn't be the one who dies! It's just not possible, and then my worst fears came true.
August 2nd, 2003, 5:59 pm
I actually thought it would be Neville Longbottom, though why, I have no clue. When I found out it was Sirius, I was shocked, because I was hoping that his name would be cleared. While I was rereading the book, though, I found several clues that pointed towards his death, that I hadn't found on my first read, such as this quote: "There are some things worth dying for!"
August 2nd, 2003, 6:10 pm
For a while, I thought it would be Hagrid, but then about halfway through reading OotP I changed my mind to Mrs. Weasley. Alas, I was wrong..
August 2nd, 2003, 6:26 pm
personally...i thought that it would be hermione because if she died then who would solve the "intelligent" part of the problems that Harry faces...nothing against harry or ron...but hermione does do alot of the research on stuff....there are examples and stuff all through all the books...
August 2nd, 2003, 6:42 pm
SIRIUS! WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE YOU!!! ;( Why couldn't Hagrid die?
August 2nd, 2003, 6:46 pm
I thought Mrs. Weasley or Hagrid would die. Along with the rest of the world. I'm devasted by Sirius's death though. I even wrote a poem and an obituary for him. (Which, by the way, was way better than one "The Toronto Star" wrote. Their's didn't make any sense.)
August 2nd, 2003, 6:56 pm
sirius is/was my fav...
August 2nd, 2003, 7:43 pm
First I thought it was going to be Hagrid, then Ron, then Mr. Weasley, then Hermione.....I did think about SIirus but I thought "hes only been in two books hes not gonna die...".....But oh well.....I was not right lol.
August 2nd, 2003, 8:14 pm
I knew it wouldn't be Ron or Hermione... I mean, I'm not ruling them out for book 7, but for book 5... NAWWW!!!! I thought it would be Hagrid with everyone else, but I also had the sneaking suspicions it'd be Dumbledore (I definitely hoped it wouldn't.. favourite character... but what an interesting plot twist! No DD to protect Harry... the madness!) or Mr. Weasley (no idea why I thought that in the first place... then when JKR played us all with that injury and all the drama with the snake bite...)... had no idea it'd be Sirius. However, I'm not too broken up. I didn't want him DEAD, but I've never, EVER been fond of Sirius Black and still am not.
August 2nd, 2003, 8:24 pm
In no particular order, I thought the following people were going to die:
1. Mrs Weasley
2. Hagrid (when he was cornered in the Forbidden Forest by the Centaurs)
3. Professor McGonagall (when she was hit by Stunners launched from Umbridge's goons' wands)
4. Hermione (when she went all "limp" in the Department of Mysteries)
I did know that Sirius was going to die before I finished the book, however. Being a moderator on these forums leaves you open to read all sorts of nasty spoilers. ;)
August 2nd, 2003, 10:00 pm
JKR was really clever in giving us the death hint, because every time something happened to a character, I though "well, this is it..."
Before reading I was pretty sure it would be DD, actually.... I imagined the disarray of the Wizarding world and Hogwarts without him, and thought that would be a good launcher into Voldie getting more power in books 6 & 7. I still think that he might be one of the characters to go in later books....which is very upsetting.
But, yeah, during reading, at first I thought it would be Hagrid, when he didn't come back, then I was sure it would be Mr. Weasley after the attack, then Hagrid again when the toad came to his house, then McGonagall with the stunners, then Sirius with the dream, and Hermione with the curse, and then came the death, which ended it. So I went all over the page with this death.
August 2nd, 2003, 11:41 pm
I think the only other candidates for the fifth book for death would have to be Mr Weasley or Dumbledore, since Mr Weasley dying would bring Ron and Harry closer together through a similar desolating despairful experiance, but I'd rather see Harry and Hermione grow closer togehter, so I'm glad Mr Weasley is still around. And Dumbledore would also be a good candidate, but he still seems too important...but still...Sirius was important too, right? But I think Sirius had it coming eventually.
August 2nd, 2003, 11:54 pm
I really thought that hermoine was going to die and I was really get sad in the end when she got hit by the green flame but fortunately she didn't die.
August 2nd, 2003, 11:57 pm
I had no doubt that it was Hagrid until I read the book myself..... I had no idea it was Sirius....
August 2nd, 2003, 11:57 pm
I thought that either Dumbledore or Sirius would snuff it, my money was mostly on DD though. I felt it would be one of them, as they both had a sort of father role for Harry. My reasoning : We hadn't see Harry lose anyone he was very close with yet. I was pretty sure it would be an older person, a parental figure, someone who had provided good guidance for Harry. It would force Harry along that path to becoming a fully independent, come-of-age adult.
August 3rd, 2003, 12:00 am
i really had no idea, i was completely blind. i really couldnt think of anyone that close to harrry.
August 3rd, 2003, 12:04 am
I NEVER thought it would be Sirius. Harry NEEDED him. I thought he would be a surviver throughout the series. I thought it would be Hagrid or Mrs. Weasley because they both are very loyal to Harry.
As I was reading the book however, JKR created a whole lot of bluffs (Ron apearing dead on the floor, Hermione and the curse, Mr. Weasley was a big one, etc) but JKR created a mood around Sirius saying he was lonely in the house, his life was in danger, stressed that everyone was still looking for him, and made him REALLY close to Harry. I knew it was coming when Harry viewed him in the department of mysteries.
August 3rd, 2003, 12:04 am
I thought it would be Mr. Weasley because he got bitten by the snake. Actually, I was kind of hoping it was because then I would know it wouldn't be any of my favorite characters. Also, from reading some rumors, I thought Hagrid was going to die.
August 3rd, 2003, 2:17 am
i really thought it was gonna be hermione or ron. i thought that the impact would be greater if one of the main characters was killed off.
August 3rd, 2003, 2:20 am
Same here on Hagrid. But I must admit, he seemed too obvious. He not a student, he lives in that house all alone near that forest, he raises dangerous beasts who may eat him at any time, his character (according to some) may have outlasted his usefullness. However, I always liked him.
Mutant for Hire
August 3rd, 2003, 2:32 am
I figured it was going to be Sirius. He just struck me as sort of the doomed type. He was someone Harry cared about but he wasn't so important to the plot that he couldn't die. So it wasn't too much of a shock when I turned out to be right.
August 5th, 2003, 3:25 pm
I thought it'd be either Mrs. Weasley or Mr. Weasley so when Mr. Weasley was attacked I was like But people in JKR's books die at the end... He can't die now...And he didn't. My alternative was Hagrid, but Sirius - I couldn't dream it would be him!
August 5th, 2003, 3:33 pm
it got spoiled for me.... a stupid kid at school was braggin bout how he finnished the book and he came over to me and was like " KyLe, want to kno who dies ? " and i was like " No" and he said" WELL SIRIUS DIES" and i punched him in his face
August 5th, 2003, 3:36 pm
i really had no idea who was going to die, but i had had to pick someone, i would have said Hagrid. when i actually read the book though, i thought Mr. Weasley was going to die, and then i thought McGonagall was going to die. even when i got to the part where Harry saw Sirius in the Department of Mysteries, i still didn't think he would be the one to die :(
August 5th, 2003, 3:40 pm
Almost instantly when I first met sirius in this last book his overall disposition and character struck me as the "doomed" kind of person who through his obvious troubles is going to meet an unfair prediciment. It was just his general attitude and all the things against him that sort of made it obvious.
Plus the fact that he was in the book a lot more than he should have been for doing so little. That was especially foreboding.
ALSO: DigitalHeadache, I'm sorry about it being spoiled for you, and punching the kid is almost acceptable, however, here at CoS forums, however rude people may be, we try to refrain from violence :agree: :tu:
August 5th, 2003, 11:52 pm
I didn't even try to venture a guess before the book came out, the "fan" clue was too confusing. All i could think of was Colin, and he just wasn't important enough. When I was reading it, in the back of my mind I knew it was going to be Sirius the whole time. He kept doing stupid things and trying to get out of the house; I was yelling out loud at him. But I didn't fully believe myself, and when Mr. Weasley and McGonagall both almost kicked it, I was actually rooting for it to be them. Anyone but Sirius. Oh well.
August 6th, 2003, 12:00 am
I wasn't sure who it was...Hagrid popped into my mind, though....I never thought it would be Sirius though
August 6th, 2003, 12:57 am
Aww.. hmm. I was paranoid for a long while that Hagrid would die, before and during reading hte book. Because of all the rumors and speculation, ya know?
And during the later parts of the book, I was getting worried for teh Dumbledore.. I don't wanna lose him! Of course book 5 would be a bit early for him to die if he is going to, but still.. it was on my mind. *sweatdrop*
August 6th, 2003, 1:29 am
At first i thought it was gonna be Colin Creevey cos J.K said the one that's gonna die is a huge fan of Harry. I never once thought it was gonna be Sirius...:( But then all these discussions and theories came about Hagrid most likely to be the victim and I started to believe that it was him. But then as I read an article about J.K actually crying when she wrote the death, I knew it was not gonna be Colin cos Colin wasn't that big of a character in HP. Hagrid was okay but I couldn't imagine J.K actually crying if Hagrid died. So then I recalled back the COS DVD interview where the interviewer asked her something about the characters and J.K answered that she's really keen/attracted to Sirius Black and Remus Lupin...so then as I read OOTP, i knew it was gonna be either of them cos they both showed up in the book and play quite a major role in the book. :sigh:
August 6th, 2003, 1:42 am
I thought it was going to be Hagrid. And I wish it had been... sorry to the Hagrid fans, but I think Sirius is a much stronger character.
x Natalie x
August 6th, 2003, 4:25 pm
I thought that Hagrid was going to die because he wasnt at the school for most of the beginning (i cant remember how long). But then when he came back i thought it was going to be one of the weasleys. but when siruis died, i really wasnt expecting it. To be honest at one point i thought that dumbledore was going to die cuz hes old and all, but he didnt and i was really glad :D.
August 6th, 2003, 4:30 pm
I had a few possibilities. Sirius was at the top of my list only becasue I didn't want him to. I kind of denied the fact that he was in the running to die, but then came to terms with it. I was quite certain the fabulous three weren't on the list nor were the Wesleys (although i wouldn't be surprised if percy dies in a book to come). I also though Dumbledore, Magonagle, Hagrid, and Lupin were possibilities.
August 6th, 2003, 4:42 pm
Prior to the book coming out, Molly was my top pick. Never once did I believe before reading the book that it would be Sirius, I was expecting it to be a character we had known since at least CoS, if not since SS.
After I started reading, someone posted on another site that Sirius was the one to die, without any spoiler warning whatsoever on Monday, in a thread we had all agreed we wouldn't divulge that information for at least a week, and even then we posted spoiler warnings. I wasn't positive the information was accurate, so I found myself falling for it every time JKR set someone else to look like the victim (Arthur and the Snake, Hermione in the DoM, Hagrid because he was gone so long, the Molly Boggart scene, etc)
And, to tell the truth, I was relived it was Sirius, because, I like Sirius' character well enough, but Hagrid and Molly are more dear to me than Sirius. I think any of the three of them would've had the same dramatic impact on Harry. Dumbledore, I could not see dying yet, as it's too early, I figure end of Book 6 at the earliest, but, I am certain he won't make it to the end of Book 7, the mentor has to be gone for the hero to fully "become"
August 6th, 2003, 5:00 pm
Before I started the book, I was pretty sure that Hagrid would get the boot. As I read it, I went through being absolutely positive that everybody from Hermione to Lupin was a goner. I did note the "ominous knife" for Sirius though... But I didn't think Mr. Weasley would die, even when it really looked like he might (it was too early on in the book).
August 6th, 2003, 5:29 pm
I thought it was going to be Ginny or McGonnagal. I never thought it was going to be Sirius. It was rather shocking when it happened.
August 6th, 2003, 6:18 pm
I took all the evidence and indications at face value. That is the famous quote by JK saying a fan of Harry was going to die so i guessed it might have been Colin. I am more concerned over how the story would work rather than the emotional effects of Sirius's death. I have to see what Rowling do in her next book.
August 6th, 2003, 6:37 pm
I thought it was going to be Hagrid or Mrs. Weasly.
August 7th, 2003, 12:07 pm
i thought it was going to b mrs.weasley
August 7th, 2003, 12:13 pm
I didn't any idea who would have died. I thought it could be Hagrid or one of the Weasleys. For a second, as I read OoP, I thought it would be both! But then JKR dropped two hints about Sirius and I thought that it would be him. I never thought it'd be him because he and Lupin are the only close connection Harry has to his parents. But JKR doesn't care to think about that. :upset:
August 7th, 2003, 5:50 pm
I really didn't have an idea. As the OotP went on, and Hagrid's absence continued, I thought he was gonna die. I also thought about Sirius dieing because he was left ALONE in the house with Kreacher. Now J.K. said there was a "venemous, disgruntled house elf". I was starting to get worried when he was left alone with him because I honestly thought he was going to get attacked by Kreacher. Funny to you guys, huh?
August 7th, 2003, 6:56 pm
I didn't have any ideas either. I truly thought that JKR wouldn't be so cruel to kill off one of the main characters...but I guess I am wrong...I thought it may be Ginny or Collin...
August 8th, 2003, 11:37 am
Before I read the book, I thought it was going to be Molly Measley.
August 8th, 2003, 11:45 am
First I thought Hagrid, then Mrs Weasley.
Whilst I was reading it though, I thought:
Dudley (the dementors)
Ron (his dead body)
Hagrid (wasnt there)
Arthur (the snake bite)
Ginny (DEs threatened to hurt her)
Hermione (what spell was that?)
August 8th, 2003, 12:58 pm
i thought it was going to be lupin just because of the whole silver arm and werewolves only die by a silver tipped dagger. i would have been sad about lupin too becuase aside from harry, ron and hermione of course, Lupin and Sirius are my favourite characters!!
i was so upset when sirius died, but i was too shocked to really be upset, however when harry broke down, so did i. he was like my own godfather.
August 8th, 2003, 1:09 pm
I thought it was Hagrid, or maybe Lupin. They both care about Harry very much, and give him a little guidance. Somehow it never crossed my mind that Mrs. Weasly and Sirius were in the same boat. I did think about Dumbledore, but then I dismissed that because Harry needed him to grow up. Somehow I never thought about Sirius then either. Poor Snuffles.
August 8th, 2003, 1:38 pm
Before I read OotP I wasn't real sure who was going to die. I figured it was going to be someone close to Harry but I was shocked when it turned out to be Sirius.
Why do all my favorite characters die off in books?
August 8th, 2003, 2:37 pm
I thought it would be Mrs. Weasly or Lupin that would die in OoTP. I never thought it would be Sirius because he is the only family Harry had left (Dursleys don't count). I thought Harry needed Sirius in his life too much for JKR to kill him. But now after JKR killed Sirius I really think all bets are off in the next 2 books and anyone could die.
August 8th, 2003, 2:41 pm
When I read the book I thought it was Hagrid who was going to die. I kind of hoped that it would be him cause I thought he was being annoying in this book. I don't want him to die but if I have to choose somebody of the good guys I would choose him.
August 8th, 2003, 3:21 pm
I must say I thought it was going to be Mrs. Weasley hands down. JK said that she had a hard time writting this book because of the death and cried her eyes out when she did write the scene. She also said that her mom had died while writting the series making her very depressed, so I thought that she would do the same for harry, ya know expressing her feeling through him. I dono sounded good in my head! lol
August 8th, 2003, 4:26 pm
Before I read the book I was sure it was gonna be Hagrid but when I was about half way through I found out that it wasn't Hagrid (I still didn't know who it was though). After that I thought it would be Dumbledore or Sirius and perhaps even Hermione when she got hit with the curse at the end.
August 8th, 2003, 6:21 pm
I was totally convinced that it was going to be Mr. or Mrs. Weasley. I mean, I had figured that all of them would in heavily involved in fighting Voldemort, and I had figured that they would be a big target anyway with Mr. Weasley being obcessed with Muggles.
I'm still sad though..... :-(
August 9th, 2003, 12:11 pm
I too thought it was going to be Hagrid. When he was missing I thought that he had died. I never thought that it was going to be Sirius who died instead. :upset:
During half the book while Hagrid was missing it felt like it was leading to his death. And when Madam Maxmine came back before him I thought that we were soon going to find out that Hagrid had died.
August 9th, 2003, 12:28 pm
J.K. Rowling had said a main character was going to die. I thought it must be Hagrid coz she really couldnt kill any of the other main characters. Sirius shouldnt have died. As it is I dont think so he is going to come back. There was no need for anybody to die.
August 9th, 2003, 4:22 pm
I was so STUNNED when Sirius died, cos I just didn't think she'd kill such a major character so early on. I thought it was going to be Dobby or Ginny, because they're both major-ish and both fans of Harry. But Sirius...*sob*...he was only introduced in bk3, he didn't get much of a part, did he??!!! (joking, Sirius lovers)
August 9th, 2003, 5:28 pm
I thought Cedric's death in GoF was more of a surprise than Sirius'. I thought it was going to be Hagrid or Mrs. Weasly.
I kind of spoiled it for myself though. I was looking ahead at all the pictures at the beginning of the chapters and happened to see the words "she killed Sirius" while flipping through.
August 13th, 2003, 6:19 pm
I had no idea of who was going to die until Harry dreamnt that Sirius was taken.
August 13th, 2003, 6:45 pm
Mrs. Weasley, I heard J.K. Rowling based her on her own mother, and she said the death would be horrible to write. Wouldn't it be horrible writing your own mothers death?
August 14th, 2003, 11:58 am
I never imagined it would be Sirius, I thought that he was too much important to die. At first I though it would be Mr Weasley, then, when they got in the department of mysteries I had no idea of what would happen: It could have been Hermione because of that spell, then, I thought it would be Ron, because of the brain; I also thought it could be Neville because he was the only one who resisted with Harry, and I suspected that he would die defending him; so I was absolutely lost and decided to stop thinking and continue reading.
I didn't feel anything when Sirius died, I was too much interested to know what would happen next to care about him... but I cried when Harry found the mirrors Sirius gave him, if he had just remembered that he got them, nothing would had happened... that thought made me feel absolutely depressed.
August 18th, 2003, 12:09 am
I was sure it was gonna be Hagrid.
August 18th, 2003, 3:25 pm
Before reading the book, I seriously thought it would either be Hagrid or Mrs.Weasley. Then, when the book came out and I was in the middle of reading it, I went to youth group, and this guy was there who worked for the radio, so he learned stuff that others didn't know yet. His daughter guessed three people, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley and Sirius, and he said that the one who died was one of those three. I actually wanted it to be Mrs. Weasley (now, before you get mad at me for thinking that, I'm going to say that she wasn't acting very motherly before they went back to school, Mr. Weasley's always been cool, and I had come to love Sirius so much that even when I knew he died, I, like Harry, wouldn't accept it, so Mrs. Weasley was the one I chose for me to want to kill off) Anyway, then when Mr. Weasley was attacked, I was actually relieved, because I had started to be really suspicious about it being Sirius, and I thought that it would be Mr. Weasley instead. I was devastated when I found out it was Sirius. (though not totally, because I think I really knew it'd be him all along) But I can't believe he's gone!!!!! :upset:
August 18th, 2003, 8:15 pm
Before I read it, I thought the one to die would be Hagrid. Then, for a split second I thought Ron, because of the boggart thing. I didn't even consider Sirius. My "friend" spoiled it for me the day after I got it though. :banghead: It didn't exactly upset me, but I can see why JK cried after having written it.
August 18th, 2003, 8:23 pm
Like a lot of you I thought it was Hagrid, because I don't find he has so much to add to the plot, which was not the case of Sirius. I also thought of Dumbledore, because Harry is safe as long as DD is alive and I still think DD will have to disapear as the final fight between Voldie and Harry.
August 18th, 2003, 8:24 pm
Before the book came out I thought it would be Hagrid, when I was reading I still thought it's going to be Hagrid (because he didn't show up at the beginning of the school year). Then I thought Mr Weasley wouldn't survive his snake bites. When he recovered, I gave up and just read as fast as I could to find out. But I didn't really consider Sirius to be the one, I just thought Rowling wouldn't take him away from Harry.
May 11th, 2004, 11:08 pm
Well I though that Mr. Weasley was going to bite the dust because he was bitten by Voldemort's snake. Also, because the healers said that the wound wasn't healing because of the weird venom.
May 11th, 2004, 11:14 pm
I had theorized that it would be Sirius, just for the simple fact that Harry losing him would be Harry losing the only parent-like person he'd ever had. I figured it would be a pretty harsh impact on him, but it would bring him some understanding as well....but I don't know if I really believed my own theory or not.
It was a random idea, but I kept arguing for it, and it wound up being right on. I also thought Dumbledore was going to die in OotP. I thought there were some hints in the other books about it, but as of yet, I'm wrong. We'll see what happens with that one.
May 11th, 2004, 11:17 pm
Before I read it I thought it would be Hagrid or Mrs Weasley which seems like a concencus. When it got to the bit when Mr Weasley was bitten I was sure he would die.
Didn't predict Sirius though. Didn't see it at all
May 12th, 2004, 4:21 am
eh i heard the rumor of someone going to die, but when i got my hands on the book i just was so excited started reading and i was just in the moment of the book, wasn't anticipating anything. so when sirius died- SHOCKING!- i was quite upset. :upset: :upset: :upset: :upset: etc. etc.
May 12th, 2004, 4:28 am
Sirius was my first prediction in the Who Will Die thread...but I thought it would be him for different reasons. I just followed the book logic that if Sirius didn't die then for what reason would Harry need to go back to the Dursley's? It was simplistic logic, but kind of effective. That was back in September of 2002, and by the time the book actually came out I had no clue who would die.
May 12th, 2004, 4:54 pm
Before I read the book I thought it would be Hagrid.
While reading I was really afraid Arthur Weasley would die. And then I thought Hermione would not come out of the Department of Mysteries.
May 12th, 2004, 4:56 pm
May 12th, 2004, 5:13 pm
I never thought it would be Hagrid, before reading the book, but, I did think it would be Molly. I even thought the folks who guessed Sirius in the "Who will Die" thread were crazy, thinking, Sirius isn't fleshed out enough, it's gonna be someone who's been around since Book 1, how stupid can you be?
While reading the book, I fell for every single misdirection, Dudley during the Dementor attack, Hagrid (Because he was gone so long and trio were worried about him) Arthur due to the Snake bite, Ron at the Bogart Scene, Hermione and Ron at the MoM.
Well, I guess I was the stupid one, since it was Sirius who died
May 12th, 2004, 5:20 pm
My problem was that I kept reading the new theories early on...by the time the book came out I thought it could be a Weasley, a Creevey, Hedwig, Hagrid, or Sirius. Oh well, I guess this just shows I trust my gut instinct.
May 12th, 2004, 6:35 pm
I was more than half convinced it was going to be Neville. Because of this, I wasn't really hit by Sirius' death when I read the book for the first time. Then, while reading the book I thought it would be Arthur until he recovered and they went to the Ministry, by which time I again thought it would be Neville. My mum thought it might be Dumbledore. Neither of us (so far as I know) even considered Sirius as a possibility.
May 12th, 2004, 9:39 pm
I thought it was Hagrid or Sirius. When they got to the OOTP headcourters i thought it was sirius just because it would make the story flow more, but then sirius will probaly come back..........
May 12th, 2004, 9:59 pm
I thought it was Hagrid and to some extent Dobby who was going to die. I never would've thought it would be Sirius
May 13th, 2004, 10:34 pm
I wasnt sure but as Magician Girl said i never thought it would be Siruis in fact that is one person i figured would not die
