Yes, there will be an Artemis Fowl movie. Robert De Niro is producing it. But the question is: Who will be Artemis Fowl?
There is a strong possibility that it will be About a Boy star NICHOLAS HOULT since Robert De Niro also produced About a Boy and Eoin Colfer already said that he would make a great Artemis. I would have to agree.
As for Holly, Miramax (who owns the rights) have already debunked the rumors that Cameron Diaz and Winona Ryder will be playing Holly. Latest rumor suggest Alexa Vega. But one thing's clear: They will be selecting an American actress for the role. (Oh, I don't know. I think Brit Samantha Morton would make a great Holly. She played Agatha in Minority Report.)
Any news on this? What do you guys think?

Their making an "Artemis Fowl" movie and not "His Dark Materials" books??? I've yet to read Artemis Fowl because I've been reading those books, but I love those books and I WANT A MOVIE FOR THEM!!!!! :D REALLY BAD.! And one for each movie.! Like LOTR and HP.! :D :p hehe
What if I'll have to wait 20yrs for it to happen? Hmmm in fact by then I may be directing or in movies or something so maybe I could get the rights to it and make them.! hehe I can dream can't I? :p

I hear they're already working on a His Dark Materials movie and Sam Mendes (the director of American Beauty and Road to Perdition is said to be interested in directing it).

How can Alexa Vega, Cameron Diaz, and Winona Ryder all be up for the same part? Alexa Vega is a kid and the other two are 30!
I like the kid from About a Boy, even though I always pictured Artemis as a blond, skinny kid with messy hair. I only read the first Artemis... I loved it, all the code-breaking stuff was cool.

Very interesting news. I must say I have never read the books, but now that I hear there is talk of a movie ... well might as well jump on the bandwagon and read the book before the movie comes out. Because we all know they change things around so bad sometimes when going from book to movie.... (example...Harry Potter...Lord of the Rings...)

I've only read the first two "Fowl" books. I believe Samantha Morton would be a great Holly (the she-elf???); I don't know any child actors, so I can't pass judgement on who could play Artemis.

Oh please, please, please DO NOT let Cameron Diaz get the role of Holly Short, my only wish!
My reason: Holly is described as being petite, with olive skin and auburn, cropped hair. Hmm, geez sounds alot like Cameron Diaz hey?
Cameron Diaz is the exact opposite of Holly's description and I can hear people saying 'make-up, wigs, costumes, computers!', But I say no, she just wouldn't be a convincing Holly for me, I'd just be seeing Cameron.
On the other hand Winona Ryder in my mind would be perfect (either that or Samantha Morton or an unknown would be just fine). Winona has the perfect facial structure for a fairy. He just has 'the look'.
I think Alexa Vega is way too young.
A funny thing i saw on www.imdb.com : When I looked up Nicholas Hoult, under notable TV guest appearances it has him in 'Casualty' 1986 & 'The Bill' 1983, the funny thing, he was born in 1990. Hmmm...

Well, there are two possibilites: One is that they may be confusing him with another actor named Nicholas Hoult and two, which I think is correct, the year in parenthesis is the year the TV show started and is still going on now thereby making it possible for Hoult to make a guest appearance.

Yay! Finally! I am so happy to hear some news about AF movie. Greatness!
The boy from About a Boy was likeable, he wouldn't do a bad job as Artemis. :)

, my thoughts exactly.
I've never read any of the Artemis Fowl books, so I'm afraid I'm not at all qualified to make a judgment on the casting decisions. The last thing I heard Nicholas Hoult was a teenage drunkard, so perhaps he wouldn't be that suitable for the role?
Then again I don't know that much about Artemis' character.

Drunkard...? Does it mean that he drinks a lot? Sorry, I am not familiar with the word.

August 28th, 2003, 11:32 am
Yep, that's more or less it, Milka. :)
A drunkard is someone who is drunk all the time. I was exaggerating, slightly, but there have been quite a few reports of Master Hoult being quite the pint-sized party animal.

Where's that from? An American as Holly ... It'll be pretty strange.
On the other hand, I agree with Colfer's suggestion for Winona Ryder, though. She has "elfish qualities".
About Nicholas Hoult. Hmm. Never seen About A Boy, myself, but ... He doesn't exactly strike me as an Artemis with the pudding-bowl haircut. I'd rather an unknown played him.
I'm slightly worried that the film will completely ruin my image of Artemis Fowl, although I want the film to happen.
Guardian Angel
August 29th, 2003, 7:40 pm
Yeah, I know what I mean by ruining the image. We created Artemis in our minds and probably nobody thinks of him the same as somebody else does.
I pictured him as a dark haired, skinny boy with light light light blue eyes. (light needs to be written three times since his eyes were very bright in my mind)
Vinona Ryder as Holly - okay... I don't like that actress very much, I need to admit, but she could fit in well in that role.
Oh, I so wanna see the movie no matter what cast will be!

Camron Diaz as Holly? No! That is wrong!
I heard a rumour that she was up for the part of Juilet but a 30-ish year old playing a 16-ish year old? Sounds a bit Dawsons Creek to me.
Nicholas Hoult as Artemis though? *ponders* Nope. I really can't see it. He doesn't look like my Artemis, but I guess that'll be hard anyway. I don't think too much of him acting like dear Arty, I don't think he has the skills.
I think an 'unknown' should play him too.

I still have not finished the first Artemis book, but from the begining I saw Tom Felton in the role. The character looks more like a cool villain than a hero. I was surprised he was not considered for the role. I supose he can't work in 2 big franchises at the same time as a Potter film takes about a year. But if he could it would be very cool.

I've read all 3 Artemis Fowl books and I always pictured Tom Felton as Artemis, too.
Winona Ryder would be OK as Holly, I guess...Butler is the hardest to imagine though, I think. If you ever saw Lilo and Stitch, Mr. Bubbles looks quite like a Butler...

Lol, that was how I imagined him before I read EC!
Ahem. Nicholas Hoult does not have a pudding-bowl haircut, Nicholas Hoult is not tiny, Nicholas Hoult looks nothing like his IMDb profile.
All those in the U.K. know what I'm talking about ("Star", Thursday, 4:30, ITV). ;)

I definitely can't see Cameron Diaz as Holly either!

before i read artemis my sister had told me a little bit about him and i had imagined him completely different..kind of dark skin and long hair..(like atreyu from the neverending story movie)...and when i read the first couple sentences i was shocked to see him.he had no resemblance at all to atreyu!it was strange.

hmm.... I'm not sure about Tom Felton as Arty. Firstly, for me, he doesn't look the part. Second, I'm not sure he could do the role and thirdly, he seems a little old.
And even if he was near perfect for the role I'm not sure that he would get it. It would just enhance some people's view that Artemis Fowl is an Irish Harry Potter, which I believe he isn't. I just think that hiring an actor known for Harry Potter might take away from the potential sucess of the film, or maybe it could go in the total opposite direction and I could be very wrong.
Thoughts?

Samantha Morton could play any role. She's the best. Now would the part be good enough for her is the question..
I've never read the series so I don't know.
Nicholas Hoult from About a Boy is horrendously untalented. Now I have read that book and he botched it up horribly. He just didn't get how to portray another human being with feelings and emotions.
I'm not being overly critical. If you're ever going to be any good as an actor you've had the talent since you were young.

If they had to go for big names, Winona Ryder would be my Holly of choice. But I'd much prefer an unknown...
I don't know if I'd see it if an actress such as Cameron Diaz got the role.

yes, I've heard of the Artemis Fowl movie. A few reasons why I wouldn't want to see it.
1) They're making a movie out of almost every book.
2) I think of the carackters in my mind. And use my imagination. And if I see anyone else playing, them, they'll look completely different! And I won't be able to think of MY original carackter. Get what I mean????
3) I hear that, that dimwit(pardon me) Cameron Diaz, might get the role of Holly Short. I don't mind Wynona Ryder as much as Cameron Diaz. So I REALLY wouldn't want Cameron Diaz to be Holly Short. She's too arrogant for that.
4) Every kid would only go to the movie, and not even bother to read the book.
Who agrees??

I'm sure Arty is skinny and pale but he has dark hair, vagos drew him very well actually.
I'v read all the Artemis Fowl books and i really think that they should get an Irish boy to be him, after all he susposed to be Irish, in fact all the actors should be Irish, prehaps not Holly or Root or that lot because they live underground and might have different accents, also the book should be mainly shot in Ireland, thats where it mainly take place, except book 2 in Russia somewhere and book 3 Chicargo if i'm not mistaken.
I'm not 100% sure about that Nicholas kid but he is the best iv seen so far, i doubt if Tom Falton would do, for one thing he's like 16 now and also he has the HP movies to deal with, although he would be good as the character. I also reckon Holly should be someone younger than Cameron Diaz because she is supposed to short (about just over one metre i believe) so it makes sense.
Anway does anyone know when they are going to start filming?

It's been a while since I've read the book, but Foaly does wear clothes for his upper body right? If not, they better get a really fit actor to play him.
And about Nicholas Hoult, I really, really, really don't want him to play Artemis, one, he lacks the charisma, two, he should have a very good drawl and three, that kid just doesn't seem to have the acting abilities.
And besides, he must be how old now? if they're using him, why not Tom Felton?
But another person who'd be really good (if he was about ten years younger) is David Anders, who plays sark on Alias.
I think I'd rather someone around whoever's going to be Artemis's age playing Holly, I've never actually thought of her as looking thirtiesh.

I wouldn't like to see Nicholas Hoult as Artemis. I mean, I really liked him in About a Boy but he doesn't seem right for Artemis. I imagined someone much skinnier and a little bit ill-looking... wasn't he described as looking something like a Vampire?? Nicholas doesn't look like that at all. I'd prefer someone unknown to play Artemis. Someone, about who you don't say, "Ah, look! It's Marcus from About a Boy" - or Draco from HP for that matter. I'd like to have someone completely new for that role.
Also I think from the actresses mentioned so far the only one I'd really like to see as Holly would be Halle Berry. And still, I think they could find someone better. And why does she have to be played by an American actress?? Wasn't Holly supposed to be Irish??
HollywoodBob
April 24th, 2004, 4:30 pm
If they're determined to cast an american actress as Holly, they should pick Jamie King (Bulletproof Monk & Lone Star State of Mind). She'd fit the role pretty well, and she's a relative unknown so there wouldn't be any need to pay the outrageous amounts that Diaz, Ryder, and Berry would expect. Plus I don't think that anyone of them could act their way out of a wet paper bag, and for the most part they're just annoying.

Me, Holly Short, would prefer Wynona Ridder to play me. Even though we look quite different we still have the same attitude! As for who should play Artemis? Well I think they should recriut a newbie actor. Or Artemis himself. I thought that Ben Kingsley would be a great Butler. Though Kingsley is awfully short...

Yes, Artemis is Irish. Book 1 takes place in Dublin, Book 2- Underground and in Russia and a teeny bit in Dublin. Book 3- Chicago, a little bit in London, a bitty bit in Dublin

I agree with you Holly_is_short, I don't think kirsten dunst would make a good holly. I'm torn about Holly I guess, I don't like any of the rumored possibilities and yet I can't think of anybody I would prefer. I do think however (and think about it before you go NO WAY) that Sean Bean could tottally play Butler. I guess its just his voice, I ALWAYS imagine his voice as Butlers. He'd look totally cool bald. And I know the characters are supposed to have Irish accents, but I ALWAYS imagine Robert Logia (sp?) as Commander Root. And I think Alan Cummings would be great as Foaly, for those of you who don't know who Alan Cummings is, he played Nightcrawler on X men 2.

I imagined Artemis to look like a short adult. The kid they pick should act a little like Artemis too. I mean he doesn't have to be a boy genius but has to act like he knows something everyone doesn't. They should pick someone new--who hasn't acted before. I like it when they find someone with a bunch of talent!
