the 'bad guys' in Harry Potter are soooooo much more interestin! i'd rather be in slytherin than griffyndor anyday. Draco and lucius malfoy are so evil they're brilliant and i love the new death eaters in OotP especially bellatrix lestrange. what does everyone else think?

well it depends..

good because you can be like an auror and stuff, that'd rock.. cops and robbers wizard style for 30yrs! incredible fun :)

but bad because heck, you're a wiz! controlling people! screwin with muggles! destroyin stuff!!

i'd prolly pick good.. it'd be close though!

good thread idea, btw!

As always I'd like to be the 'inbetween'. *nods* :)
I don't like choosing sides much.

I understand the fascination with 'evil', but I still don't understand why death eaters are 'cool', they seem too one-sided
but that's just my opinion.

it would be nang to be an auror but i'd still rather be on voldemotrs side!

The whole "auror" thing is somewhat overrated...

But then again, it sounds fun to be able to have quite a bit of freedom...hmmm....

Well, err..I'm sticking with the light side. There's less things to deal with. Less things to stress about- "oh..was he killed? NO!? WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO!? ARRGH!". See what I mean?

When you're the good people, you're just..good. You don't have to worry about killing anyone or making someone else's life a living hell.

I choose my own path that is beyond merely a good and bad choice. I would become something that is truly different from these two paths.

hmm..
You are born good and pure but in your hearts, you have a part of you that wants to rebel and go bad. Or just society screws you up and turns you bad.
Despite my *****yness, I am rather good. I rather help than to cause pain and suffering. I sorted myself in Hufflepuff though, represent the little people.

Well...

Honestly, I'd rather be in Gryffindor. Being mean to people is a part of me, oh yes, but even in Harry Potter, disliking Muggle-borns is like discrimination, and I don't like discrimination.

So I would be a good witch.

I'd probably be one of the 'good guys'. I'm just too nice to pull off being evil.

Plus I'd hate to be some lackey of Lord Voldemort's.

Good guys wouldn't be good if there weren't bad guys to be bad. :D I hope it made sense.

I'd rather be a good character... that way I'd be in trouble non stop and I like it. ;)

Dedalus Diggle

In all honesty, I'd probably be most like Seamus, essentially a good guy, but full of doubts, with feet of clay, unsure what way was the right way and so going nowhere at all (that's why I need literature - so I can for a time be one of the wise and courageous guys who understand what's up and how to go about protecting freedom, justice and all the good stuff - the 'real world' sucks not so much for being evil as for being murky).

Cat

I'd rather be a good character. The bad ones all seem to be mad, angry, mentally tortured or just thoroughly miserable. It's supposed to be fun to be bad, but Voldemort doesn't seem to let people have much fun. Then there's people like Draco... I wouldn't want to be him, because when he gets his comeuppances, he gets them by the bucket load.

Hpmons
August 29th, 2003, 4:09 pm
Id probably be an evil spy. You get yourself into all sorts of dangers, and you have two personalities: good and bad. Evil people go to Azkaban, and people avoid them; but they get to do loads more magic. Good people can be boring, but people like them.
Spys get the best of both worlds!

I never thought of being a spy! Now that would be cool!

I don't know. being bad would be rather fun, instead of the usual goody-two-shoes mode, but I don't think I could be a completely bad person with killing people and stuff. Not me, good or bad. I'd be the mysterious girl who is bad in general, but helps the good guys. Yeah. ^^;

I think I'd rather be one of the characters that you don't really know if they're good or bad. I'd be a bit shady, of course, but I wouldn't really be that easy to figure out.

Fantasy Moon
August 30th, 2003, 1:15 am
I'd be a neutral character. I usually prefer the "in between" role. I've always liked characters in stories that aren't good or evil. Whatever suits me in the present would be the way I'd go.

Being an auror would be interesting though. :)

Well, I know that I would probably be a Goodie, because I just couldnt be mean! And yeah, the Goodies always get the glory!

But I cant help but think how great the evil characters are, like lucious and Draco, how you just get the shivers when you read about them. They are fantastic as characters, but so evil and bad.

I'm for being good like Dumbledore and Lupin. While I used to admire Percy I couldn't see myself joining the ministry or following rules so strictly.

I'd never kill anyone and the good guys stop muggle torture. :tu:

If your going to ask me...

Anyday i would rather be in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw... Any day ok... That means i'd rather be a good guy than a bad guy... In school plays i like playing the role of the bad guys... But talking about Harry Potter, its much better being the good guy.

Although some claim that baddies have more fun, I'd definitely want to be a good character like Dumbledore, Lupin or McGonagall. Baddies always get their comeuppance at the end of books/films and it's not really in my nature to be devious or malevolent.

Loz

This is a difficult question. I thoroughly enjoy teasing and taunting people with smart-alec wise cracks, have been known to try and grasp some authority when I shouldn't have, constantly antagonise those I dislike and tend to do things that harm others either for the greater good or my self-preservation. On the other hand, I don't want to get in trouble in anyway, have a moralistic attitude towards things and want to appear righteous and exacting.

Snape. I'd like to be Snape.

I think I would be a good character because the bad guys are always betraying one another and there's not trust present in those types of groups. Even though it might be fun to be bad for awhile, in the long run, being on the good side, always pays off. That's what I think.

I'd like to be one of those characters where they'll act all good at the beginning but actually turns out to be bad at the end. I think that kind of character would be cool. It keeps people guessing. Anybody watched Valentine? The character I'd like to play would be something like Dorothy. She acts all nice at first, with the girls and everything but it turns out that she is the killer. Yea that'll be cool. I'd want people to love me first before they get that shocking twist at the end. :elaugh:

I'd probably be one of the 'good guys'. I'm just too nice to pull off being evil.

I'm nice too, but I can't help thinking it would be kind of cool to be without any sort of conscience, able to use my powers without having to worry if it was right. In real life, I'm a very moral person who won't harm any living thing unless necessary...but still, the idea appeals.....

Plus I'd hate to be some lackey of Lord Voldemort's.

But that's half the thrill. He is so terrifying, so powerful, and so _fascinating_ that being his lackey would feel absoloutely right. Anyone else feel like this, or am I different and strange?

I'd probably be neutral. Whenever I take a Sorting quiz, my estimate the average of all that I've ever taken:

Gryffindor: 5%

Hufflepuff: 2%

Ravenclaw: 43%

Slytherin: 52%

Drker2000
February 25th, 2004, 4:33 am
Heh, every quiz I've taken 'cept the first one was Ravenclaw, and I've taken about 7.

So let me crank up the numbers.

Ravenclaw 88%

Huflepuff 12%

So I would definitely be a good guy.

If I was in the movies, I'd definitely want to be a villian. I'm good at acting pissed off at people. lol Besides, in plays, I'm always the main character, and it gets boring being good all the time *cackles* Otherwise, I'd want to be a Ravenclaw, not a Gryffindor (I'm a coward) and not a Slytherin...even though I do like the colors. I love green, and shiny is my favorite color, so silver is good too! lol Besides, how would Neville fall in love with me if I was a Slytherin? Cheers

id be a bad character who turned good. i'd like to be sirius' deceased wife (cos hey, sirius is described as being so gorgeous, he had to have had a wife right?). she was an evil slytherin and her love for sirius made her see the error of her ways so she went to the good side, but then was killed by voldemort's lot who were angry that she had left them. sirius was left heart-broken. (sorry if i went a little off-subject there)

I would like to be a good character that the trio thinks is bad at first, but then at the end of the book they (the trio) find out that i'm a good character and let me hang out with them :) Kind of what happened to Sirius with some alterations.

I'd just like to point out that being Slytherin doesn't equate to being 'bad' or 'evil'. Don't think that and then blame it on Rowling.

Of course, it often equates to being a selfish, stuck-up heartless slimy crawler who treats other people like ants, but that's life for you. And that's ambition for you, too. Too much of anything can be a poison.

I've replied this thread before but I want to reiterate - there's no way being good is boring. Mad-Eye's a good guy and, for all his faults, he's far from boring. I'd like to be slightly horrible but good. No, being Dumbledore would be even more fun than that! He only has to be polite and he drives people up the wall. Sometimes it's fun to be nasty to people who are nasty to you, but sometimes it's even more fun to be nice to people who are nasty to you. It confuses people and breaks their defences.

The bad mostly seem to end up mad or miserable. At least most of the good are merely slightly potty.

Strangely, I'm always a Gryffindor when I take those quiz things, but I am supreme evil. Either I'd lie low until Harry defeats Voldie, or I'll get impatient and overthrow him. I'm just not meant to be good. In place of a Dark Lord, you will have a queen. All shall love me and despair.

GryffindorGr

I would pick being the "good" character but sometimes they're boring. lol. just kidding.
Well, not really of course, which is why I placed "sometimes", but I'd like a character in between, somewhere along the "grey" area. Nothing really evil or bad--it's not pretty getting it in the end when you're a bad character, they never win.
But the myth that good characters are boring is tricky because in essence a lot of bad evil characters are very 2 dimensional, or nearly 1 dimensional. They have no depth to them. Good characters do have dimension.
Some of Shakespeare's plays for instance portray bad characters very 2 dimensional like Iago in "Othello" but he's always been considered the very interesting bad guy because of his intellect to lure good guys to make themselves trip. Then there's the ones who are in the grey area, like Hamlet. They really mean well, but they take things a bit too far.

Tirwen Lupin
March 5th, 2004, 1:11 am
I'm not really of the mind that the bad characters have more fun--they certainly don't seem to in HP. They're all angry, insane, depressed--their lives just seem plain unpleasant. I'd hate to have to serve Voldemort--apart from being agonizing, I doubt I could do much of the things required, like torturing/murdering people. Besides, it's simply not right.

The good don't always do things honestly. Even Harry's dishonest. Then again, I don't see why being perfectly honest would be more fun so it's still fine.

We only get one point of view but we can always imagine the point of view of others. But it's sometimes easier to see the big picture outside the point of view. Some of the Death Eaters, the ones that don't get tortured and bullied, might still think that's it's all glory and power... but hopefully they'll soon realise that they're barely more than Voldemort's little house elves. They're fooling themselves. Speaking from an outsider's point of view, I certainly wouldn't want that!

In HP, no, of course not. But there are all sorts of books where the central character is a bad guy, especially more modern books - "The Awakening," "Catcher in the Rye," and more that I can't think of. The problem is that when you have the point of view of the bad guy, you simply don't realize it.

I would rather be in Slytherin. In fact if there was really a wizarding world and I was a student in Hogwarts I would be sorted into Slytherin anyway. I've taken loads of online sorting tests including sorting-hat.com and the official website sorting and I've been sorted into Slytherin all the way. But I would never be a major villian like Voldemort or Bellatrix or Malfoy. I just don't have that kind of charm and the ability to strongly influence others like Voldemort did. :p

Hiya!

I don´t really know, because first I liked the bad characters, like draco and the others and I thought like other people that it was more interesting with those characters but after a couple of months I changed my mind and I don´t fancy those bad characters ( except Snape, but I don´t think he´s so evil, I think he´s a quite good teacher and cool). As you guys see at my username I prefer those who go in Ravenclaw.

RoadSafetyGirl

I can see the argument that bad guys are more interesting, as are shades of grey characters but I would definitely want to be a good guy because I would want the conviction that I'm fighting the right side and I'm not hurting innocent people as I'm doing it. The moral high road and all that.
But I think in a lot of ways its easier to be a bad guy than a good guy, I don't know why, but its harder to try and do the right thing, but always seems easy to the wrong thing!

I do think that the 'evil' characters are often written more complexly. We don't hear a lot about Susan Bones, or many of the Hufflepuffs or many of the Ravenclaws (Cho Chang's character hasn't really been developed). But, I would rather be on the side of good - perhaps Ginny Weasly (who is developing into a nicely complex character).

I'd like to be a mix. I am a Slytherin, though. Which is weird, since I follow rules [at school]. But I do have another side. A mix would have the most fun.
Plus, in defense to "be a Slytherin and be evil" people:
The quote WAS" "There's not a witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin."
NOT: "There wasn't a witch or wizard in Slytherin who didn't go bad."

I'd rather be someone fighting against Lord Voldemort. Someone in the Order. If that would make me a good character, then yes , I'd rather be a good one. I'd rather not be a death eater. Well... either is fine with me. But in my opinion, i think potraying an evil or nasty character is rather challenging and extremely fun. You'll have more room to grow and where's the challenge when you have to act like your normal, sweet, old self, right? As a baddie, you even get to manipulate your role, for a second you might seem like a good friend, but when the poor fellow turns, you stab him. Now, that's what i call, WICKED! *sinister laugh* Muahahaha.... *cough cough*
Don't get me wrong, guys! I'm not like that in real life, that's just for roleplays, lol...

I'd like to be on the good side most of the time, but I'd also like to be portrayed as an anarachist not afraid of going after change too. I'd want to have very rare and unusual magical powers that would be noticed by the Ministry, but I'd probably be a self-employed Bounty Hunter.

Uh...

I think I would be the Bad Girl, Death Eater which turned good.

Well, not fully good >D But no, really, good but not that good as the wonder trio. Something like... Playing nasty tricks on everyone, still using Avada Kedavra but not that often, fighting on the good side... and being really REALLY bad to Voldie & co... ^^ Using very bad curses and being devilish ;3 And could betray the good ones at any moment too.

A little neutral I think. Figting with both sides. Not being so 'goodie-good' and full of mercy as Potter. But still optimistic. Having a twisted mind.

Oh, how I love my character XD She's all like that.

If I was actually in the world, I would want to be a "good guy", but if I were acting in a movie or something I think playing a "bad guy" would be way more fun...there is more to work with and usually they get some of the best lines and what not...I think it would also be fun to be completely different that what I actually am...

I think I'm a rather "good" person in real life and I feel comfortable with the way I am - but I do think that gloomy characters are much more intersting.
I have never played a nice person in a play I was in - but for me the point about acting (and the fun) is to be someone totally different than you are normaly - and you don't have to deal with the consequences because its just on stage.

I definitely agree. I have a tendancy to like characters with shadowy pasts that haunt them daily, and a bitter outlook on life in general. They seem to be more 3-dimensional, and thus more human. And it would be interesting to be someone who is sort of in the gray area, neither completely good nor completely evil (Snape comes to mind, here).

I would be a good guy, or rather girl. I can't stand the evil side. Of course, I'm also Christian, so that would account for it. I'd want to be in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw and fight on Harry's side. The only way you would get me to join the dark side (Death Eaters) is to put me under the Imperious curse. I'd rather die and spend an eternity in he- the underworld than join Voldemort.

Good character obviously. Why would you want to be an evil, cruel, heartless person?! It's just awful!! I'd be either Dumbledore because he knows so many secrets and is so **** wise and calm all the time!! I love Dumbledore, man! Or I'd be Harry just because he gets so many thrills. He has a lot of life experience. Poor boy though or I'd be some random chick who goes out with Harry. I like that one better. [grins]
Or I'd be Sirius but I wouldn't want to because he's on the run and I'd be Lupin but he's a werewolf. Even though Dumbledore's a guy and I'm a chick I'm very sure it would be an interesting experience.

The problem with being evil is that evil is usually very one-tracked. Their tendencies are for the bad of all but them... they aren't well-rounded, and usually narrow-minded.

A good guy can be well-rounded, and have a strong, wide mind. They have more to them, normally...

I would have to choose to be a villain. Often times they have legitimate reasons, even better, sometimes they turn out to not be the villain at all (I.E Lucian from Underworld).

I'm completely going to be a bad character for Halloween  I'm so too old for the Halloween thing, but I figured I'd indulge my inner child that's a little off her rocker lol Really though, I'm not that old.
Anyway, I'm going with a Slytherin motif for my costume. I debated whether or not to be some random Slytherin person or Hermione. Hermione just because my hair has a mind of its own. Slytherin won because it seemed like more fun for the evening.
In terms of the books, I think I'd like to be one of the more mischievous yet still good at heart characters- like Fred or George. Not to say I want to be a dude.

Well, let's see now: The bad guy always has the upper hand for about two thirds or three quarters of any old time he's in, while the good guy suffers during this period, usually loses someone dear to him and get's in all sorts of trouble. Now the last bit, things aren't going too well for the bad guy, because the good guy is sweating and working his butt off to get to the bad guy. Then in the end, the bad guy usually dies a most gruesome death, comes back one more time, might take someone with him there, and then dies for real. Yes, I would like to be the bad guy, but only the one who wins.... Like Bruce in Die Hard

Not always true... Sadly. When the bad guys win, they portray themselves as the good guys and eventually, that's how they're viewed. In history, at any rate. In some fiction, it's true as well *crosses fingers and hopes it will not be so in HP*
Anyway, I gotta go with good. But evil is certainly tempting. For one thing, evil sure does seem to have a lot more fun. Everything you've wanted to do or say, you'd do... because you'd be evil
But it'd take an awful lot of energy to maintain that level of sarcasm. Not to mention the time you'd spend co-ordinating your all-black wardrobe.

Because, for one, it's always fun to be bad. And being bad in a story would be totally fine.

In real life, I could never be mean, it just isn't in me truly, but in a story I would love to be a bad character.....they're often more cool and sexy than good characters will ever be, in my opinion.

I'll be tricky and want to be a good guy acting as a bad guy. Like Snape! I don't know which House I would prefer, seeing as I don't think I'm very brave and think of myself as smart, but also loyal and I'm sure I have an evil side as well, so it's tricky. But yes, I would like to be like Snape.

A lot fo people think he's evil, a Death Eater, but he's actually a good guy. I mean, if he still goes to Death Eater meetings, I'm sure he's risking his life on a regular basis because it's very possible that Voldemort will find out he's a spy and instead of 'just' punishing him with a Cruciatus for whatever he deems worthy, he could just kill him. Plus, I love how he's so snarky and sarcastic, just like me! So, Snape is me in female form.

People keep saying they want to be a bad character because they're more interesting or have more depth. I think the good characters have just as much depth and interest as the bad characters, if you're actually paying attention to it.

I also agree that this is a very black and white question, while many characters are grey, which is extremely deep and interesting. I'd like to be grey, but on the side of white.

People, the world isn't divided into categories.
Like Evil people, who just kill, steal, and kick innocent puppies, and Good people, who help others, donate to charity and are nice.

There are shades of gray, and thats where I would want to be! Some sort of combination between Draco and Harry. Sweet, caring, won't let other people step on you, sarcastic, knows how to manipulate, knows what the right thing is even if you don't feel like doing it, has lackeys and friends, has priorities, etc...

I sometimes come of as a bit of a jerk, even to my friends, not that I do it on purpose! It's just that:

1-I have a big mouth, and tend to use it before thinking
2-I hold grudges (something I'm trying to not do anymore)
3-My mind tends to wander away...

So I'm not exactly an angel who tends to lost dogs, but I also am not so evil as to push my cousin who is dog animagus though a veil...

100% evil. Being an evil character is so much fun. Yeah most of the time your 'fun' ends early because of mr.good but it would be much more interesting. I'm not the evil type in reality but I'd be more than willing to be an evil character in a book. Not only that but most of the time (okay all the time) authors show you the book from the 'good' character's point of view. It'd be pretty cool to see the other side of things.

I don't believe in total good or bad. I'd be a neutral. Good in some ways and bad in others.

Definitely a baddie. A lot more fun. I'm not your average sweetie. Wait.. don't good guys finish last? Or bad guys? :P I'm so slow. Still, I'm sarcastic, and I have a blunt mouth. You can't have to of those traits and be a that little angel.

I'll problebly be both. Good and evil. Since sometimes I'll be like really nice and sometimes I just act really evil ;) :eyebrows:

I would treat people the way they treat me. They step on my toe, I step on theirs. I'm not like that in real life, though. I just think that being evil would be fun. Plus, I would be in Slytherin, my favorite house.

Good, simply because there's less chance of being killed by Aurors or Voldemort.

Either one would be fun…

Being a Good Guy, everyone would like you and you would almost always win in the end, and it’s just a goody warm feeling type of thing! :p

Being a Bad Guy seems like a little more fun! EVIL People would STILL like you, and for some reason it’s more fun playing bad people in movies/plays because for some reason they seem to have more fun

I’d actually like to play someone ditzy like Lavender or Parvati because they’re just so funny with all the Divination stuff they do and how they act…it just cracks me up and I would LOVE to play one of them in HP:lol:

I'd probably be inbetween the two.

Well, being a bad character is so fun. But I like good characters too. They struggle and most of the times win.

I think I would be a character who is bad at the beginning, and then turns out good. Then I can be both!

I wouldn't want to be bad. The bad guys always lose.

How can you say that? Have you ever looked around and tried to figur out who won? Usually, in the 'real' world that is, it is the bad guys who get the upper hand at things. A few of them hasn't, but then again, they are the only ones we hear about.

Back to topic.

I truly believe that I would join the Death Eaters if I had the chance. I wholeheartedly agree with the Dark Lord in several things, but have opinions of my own and I think my ideas could help him a great deal in his mission.
