View Full Version : Musical preferences of the characters?

Mods-- I searched for a thread like this, and the closest I could find was this one (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=10668&highlight=music), about what songs certain characters/situations in HP remind you of. This is slightly different, but close this if the two threads seem too much alike, or if there's another thread that I missed.
Anyway, I was wondering what types of music do you think each chracter would like? The style, certain pieces, composers, groups, and so on.
It said in SS that Dumbledore enjoys chamber music. So I imagine that he'd like Baroque composers, like Handel, Vivaldi, and Bach.
Sirius would probably like Beethoven--plenty of storminess and angst. Edit: Though I'm only suggesting that one because it's the only one I can think of at the moment! :p
Your ideas?

 Sirius listening to Beethoven? I suppose I can see that... if I squint a little. Don't get me wrong, I don't find it ridiculous, it's just that the idea of Sirius listening to Beethoven is something that I can actually see him doing and at the same time the picture of him listening to him is funny!
I can see Luna listening to any kind of music with out really paying attention to the fact she is listening to music.
I'm not sure about the others, though. I've never really thought about it.

I think this is a great idea for a thread!
Harry, I think, would have a preference to angsty, angry music (or at least in the OotP). Rock or hard rock, maybe? (Is there even a difference?)
As for the other characters, I'm not sure.
Ron?
Hermione?
Fred/George?
Ginny?
Malfoy?
Neville?
Luna? (I bet she would like dreamy sounding music, like Enya)
McGonagall?
Flitwick?
Lupin?
Snape?
Percy?

For flitwick I would say the dance of the suger plum fairies....what!? He likes sweet stuff.......

Hmmmm... I could definitely see Luna listening to really soft dreamy music and dancing very slowly... :D
I agree with Harry liking "angry" music, WeasleyIsOurKing.
Sirius liking Beethoven? Maybe, but I picture him liking music that he could bang his head to more and his hair would fly everywhere.
I really see Flitwick's favorite song being "Flight of the Bumblebee." (That's the name right?)
*edit* Yeah, the Sugarplum Fairies would be good too, cleansweep11!
As for Ron and Hermione... maybe Ron would be into stuff that's popular today and Hermione... anything sophisticated I guess.

I could see mostly EVERYONE listening to clasical music and so on. But, I could really see Sirius listening to Rock. I mean it's really hard to tell what kind of music everyone would want to listen to except Harry and Sirius. For Harry I'm guessing the same stuff and Sirius.

Sirius liking Beethoven? Maybe, but I picture him liking music that he could bang his head to more and his hair would fly everywhere.
Quite right--I'm just not familiar with that sort of music! But yes, that would really suit him.
I just thought of one for Lupin--at first I thought of Chopin, but that doesn't seem quite right. Them I remembered Debussy--he wrote a beautiful piano piece called "Claire de Lune" (not sure I spelled that right). It means "Light of the Moon", an appropriate title for a Lupin piece. I'm not sure that it's quite his style either, but it's very tranquil, with mournful overtones. I can imagine him listening to that in his sadder times.
WeasleyIsOurKing--Enya would be really good for Luna, though now that I think about it, Debussy's music is even dreamier than Enya's. Still a good idea.
Cleansweep11 and Flobberworm, I really like you ideas for Flitwick!

Let's see, favorite characters first...
- Snape would not listen to music. Period.
- Sirius... I imagine him more of a Dave Matthews sort... all brooding and beautiful.
- McGonnogal would listen to Celtic-type music, like Enya's Braveheart theme.
- Harry would probably listen to Tool, or Staind. Very intelligent and in-depth metal; scream your emotions out music.
- Ron would listen to country. I don't know why. I don't even know if they *have* country in the UK. But that's what he'd listen to, I just know it.
- Lupin would listen to piano... deep... quiet... I don't know much about classical music, but I would suggest Thomas Newman or Tori Amos for modern stuff.
- Voldemort would listen to Don Davis' music from The Matrix series.
- Trelawney would listen to trance/ambient stuff... maybe Delerium? Portishead?
- Tonks would listen to the Wierd Sisters. She's got a shirt with them on it, I believe?
- James would listen to rock. Definitely. I imagine Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine. Perfect.
- Hermione would listen to the same type of music as Lupin. They seem to have very similar tastes.
- Luna would listen to techno/electronica, I think... something she can listen and dance to and like without having to think very much.
- Neville would have no real knowledge of music... whatever they play on the radio is fine with him.
- Fred and George would listen to whatever they wanted; whatever mood took them. I'm surprised they haven't started a band already! :p
- Percy would listen to opera. Without a doubt. He sings it in the shower!
I can't think of any other characters at the moment, but what do you all think so far?

Oh yeah, Luna. I think that she would listen to a mix of Classical and Rock. But a more shallow type of classical. Like the one people listen to when they are down and out. Not the one that actually cheers people up.

There has to be atleast one Folkie. With magic and medieval decor and such traditional customs, traditional music would go down a treat. I wonder who it is ..?

Mrs. Weasley would listen to Sixties music, now that I think about it. In the CoS movie, that stripey-colorful-tunic she was wearing made me think instantly: "Hippy!" I envision Simon and Garfunkel... the Mammas and the Pappas... maybe even Led Zeppelin, if she was pissed off?

Dumbledore maybe? I know his wizard card said he liked chamber music, but I can imagine him liking folk music as well. Or Alberforth? We don't know much about him, but that might be the kind of simple thing that he'd listen to.
Or McGonagall. She has a very traditional attitude.
I've remembered another piano piece for Lupin (probably the most well knows piece associated with the moon): the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata. It's interesting that the moon causes him a lot of pain and agony, while music about the moon is the usually the opposite but still suits him.

Hmmm
I think Luna would listen to something from a strange country and go "Can't you just FEEL the music, who needs to understand it!" and everyone would look at her all funny.
I think Dumbledore would listen to happy things, like stuff that you would never expect for a man his age. Like... A Chipmunks Album or something *LOL*
Ron would like the Weird Sisters because... well he just would.
Harry I think would be into the Punk/pop fade. Since he is pretty angsty, but not angsty enough to start like Slipknot or anything.
Hermione would like classical music, it would be here thing. BUT she would know all about current acts and stuff because she was reading books like "The History of Rap." and "Music, a comprehensive study of todays Pop Culture"... you know, just for fun.
IF Draco was a muggle, he would like things like Slipknot and Mudvayne. But his dad wouldn't like him listening to that so he would mostly listen to things that his dad find Suitable.
Hmm.. that's all I can think of right now haha.

I think Fred and George woud like weird songs, like "Stacie's mom" and "Tribute" (By Tenacious D)
And Dumbledore would really like "Flight of the bumblebee" :D

I could see Harry listening to the Smiths, The Beatles and most definitely bright eyes, Elliot Smith, death cab for cutie and Belle and Sebastian.
I could see Llopin and his friends listening to the smiths, joy division and the cure.
Dumbledore is obviously a Beatles fan.

Uuugh!
The only person whose taste in music we do know is Nicholas Flamel, who is reported on his Chocolate Frog card to like opera. I suspect there's quite a bit of liking of Muggle music like that of one sort or another among those wizards who are not prejudiced agains Muggles. I can well imagine some liking Rock too. (and don't assume it's one or the other either; my main passions in music are metal and opera, and I'm by no means the only one)
I can'y imagine DEs/fanatical purebloods liking any sort of music that's arisen for a very long time, so is see them listening to an evolved variant of medaeval folk crossed with plainsong, still in the medaeval modes.

Well, Hagrid is into flute carving, so perhaps he has a weakness for folk music?
I think we're extending Hermione's intelligence to her music taste. She's a 15-year-old girl, so she probably listens to the same pop music as everyone else.

Lol, I can see Dumbledore as a Beatles fan, or anything from the 60's I suppose. Folkie stuff could also work for him.
As for Umbridge, I don't know why, but I see her listening to that meditation music, whale noises and birds chirping. This doesn't really fit her, but it's the way I see it.

Dumbledore is obviously a Beatles fan.
Yes, Dumbledore is such a Beatles fan.
I could see Hermione being more into the classic female rock stars like Carly Simon and Janis Joplin.
Harry and Sirius would have similar music tastes - rock, like Weezer, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, maybe some Queen.
Can anyone think of something for Lockhart?
Aranel
October 25th, 2003, 4:48 am
Lockhart... "You're So Vain" Carly Simon (but this is only a one off). Err... I think he'd love ballads about heroes or incedibly good looking people.

rotsiepots--- I think extending someone's intelligence to their musical tastes is very reasonable. I'm fourteen and I certainly don't listen to the same pop music as everyone else, and I think that has a direct correlation to my background and reading and such.

- Snape Big powerful opera German stuff like Wagner might even be a Ring Cycle fan, powerfull music full of revenge themes.
- Sirius... pop Rock, meatloaf Kiss Alice Cooper that sort of thing.
- McGonnogal, Scottish dance music,
- Harry, I can not remember the name of the group but they had hits with Breath and Firestarter
- Ron, Wizard rock when his Mum's about and Thrash metal when he's own his own
- Lupin would listen to Country, and Classical
- Voldemort who cares, can snakes hear??
- Trelawney would listen to trance/ambient stuff... but played backwards
- Tonks would listen to the Wierd Sisters. She's got a shirt with them on it, I think it is a bootleg shirt as it is spelt wrong.
- James would listen to rock, when Lily was about, and Madness, and Buster Blood vessel on his own
- Hermione would listen to French pop stars singing of unrequited love and pain
- Luna would listen to the sound of the wind in the trees (EP version)
- Neville would have no real knowledge of music, he'd listen to Barry Manalow and eighties lift music
- Fred and George would listen to nobody, just like alway!
- Percy would listen to opera. but would secretly like to listen to Ska and two tone, Prince Buster, the S** Pistols, but without understanding it's a life style thing and not just the music
- Dumbledore would listen to everything suprising all with his depth and knowledge of Classical ( French, English chamber music, Austrian dance music light and fluffy ) and modern classical (mostly German and Russian, (sad slow pain filled music) all the way up to Muggle and Wizard pop, never for once trying to be cool and trying to use the latest slang, but softly enjoying all,
- Hagrid would listen to music with rock in,

I imagine Harry liking/listening to darker, angsty rock, such as Linkin Park/Evanescence
Hermione would probably be into instrumental or thematic music.
I can totally see Ron grooving to "Don't you forget about me" or some other quirky 80's music.
Ginny might be into bubblegum pop. (i.e. Britney or Justin- bleh! :rasp: )
As for Voldmemort- perhaps a Marilyn Manson song?

I bet Lupin can play guitar! Wouldn't that be something? And Sirius can sing, as we discovered in OotP (and he must be able to sing pretty well, or else Harry would have mentioned it!)
Couldn't you just see Lupin and Sirius and James and Lily sitting around at home, Lupin playing some slow Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Sirius singing?

Sirius-old skool British punk, like the Clash and the Sex Pistols in his Maurauder days. I could see him listening to something nice & angsty like AFI during OOTP
Lupin-I agree w/ piano music. Something soothing, yet slightly depressing
Hermione-I could see her listening to bubblegum pop
Snape-metal. That would be funny-Snape headbanging. Or maybe classical. Angsty classical
Dumbledore-The beatles! He'd probably like classical, too
McGonagall-something with bagpipes. I just see her as the type who like bagpipes
Luna-Radiohead or maybe Atom & His Package
Neville-80's New Wave!

Well, we know from the frog card that Dumbledore’s a real fan of chamber music. His favorite composers are probably Bach and Mozart. He seems to like all sorts of music though, remember the school song scene?
Tonks was wearing a Weird Sister’s shirt, but that doesn’t mean they’re her favourite band, necessarily. Her father’s muggle born so she could listen to almost anything. I have a weird feeling that her favourite song is ‘Bring it on Home’ (Led Zeppelin). I have no idea why.
The image of Snape mixing potions while listening to the Goldberg Variations (J.S. Bach) comes to mind.
I’m absolutely certain that Old-what’s-his-name has always been completely tone deaf or became so when he finished his ‘experiments’ in immortality.
Hermione has trouble concentrating with any sort of noise, so she’s not into music at all.
Lupin, on the other hand, has a massive Vivaldi collection that he listens to during full moon (when he’s taken the potion). Otherwise, who knows? The Stones?
Luna is, as always, difficult to figure out. Something tuneless and weird, or possibly something bizarrely normal (for her) played strangely. "Listen to The White Album backwards and you’ll hear the location of the Crumple-Horned Snorkack breeding grounds!"

Lupin likes the songs "Wild Thing", "Bad Moon Rising" and the band Lupine Howl. Well, my sister was once listening to her Launch cast radio station and it played these songs in a row and she decided it was accusing her of being a werewolf, so I definately smell a conspiracy here :eyebrows:

Harry - definetely rock, something dark and agressive
Hermione - pop (hope not), old women rock (Janis Joplin, Patti Smith) or same as Ginny
Ron - hymn of Chudley Cannons ;)
Ginny - with reference to Kat from "10 things I hate about you" - agressive feminine rock
Cho Chang - rather pop, but maybe j-pop (or even j-rock?)
Snape - something dark, gothic rock, black metal?
Dumbledore - Beatles, sounds of the sixties etc.
Sirius, Lupin - rock from '70: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Doors
Bill Weasley - nu metal, grunge, modern rock, or the same as S&L
Lee Jordan, Angelina Johnson - hip-hop, reagge

Good one. :)
For some strange reason i can imagine Lily and James (p'raps Remus, too) listening to the Beatles. Yes really.
And something industrial for Snape, maybe mixed with the odd classical piece. But that's probably just wishful thinking. ;)

Hi everyone.
I could see the Mr and Mrs Weasley being hippy types...They seem quite open-minded about most things...
Tonks is a punk fan for me, maybe it's the pink hair "colouring" (ha ha) my judgement...
Harry is definately a metal fan, all that teenage angst bubbling up inside of him...
For some reason I can see Snape's taste being like mine...The Cure, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Joy Division...All that stuff my mum calls "depressing". It's tonic for us "misunderstood" types.
And speaking of misunderstood...Maybe Hermione is an attitude-ridden Pink fan??

Ron - not any particular kind of music.
Hermione - female singers, like Tori Amos or Sarah McLachlan.
Ginny - Avril Lavigne, angry girl music:).
Dumbledore - Bach, Mozart, baroque and classical and also Beatles for some reason;).
Snape - He probably likes Rachmaninov, lots of romantic Russian music.
Lupin - piano music, folk music, generally quiet.
Luna - Enya, or something like that.
Sirius - Classic Rock, definitely.
Tonks - judging by the hair and the Weird Sisters t-shirt, probably Punk.
Bill - ditto, lots of modern rock actually.
Percy - Opera:lol:
Cho Chang, Lavender and Parvati - these are popular girls, they probably adore Justin Timberlake and such.

Sirius and Remus both like Tom Waits.
Remus also classical music and maybe Tori Amos.
I can see Ginny listening to Avril Lavine, like a lot of people said, but I don´t think she would only like (angry or not) girly music. She would probably like everything she considers to be cool like "The Darkness" I´m sure she loves The Darkness. (definitly not Britney and Christina)
Ron is difficult but NOT country. Whatever he thinks is funny I guess, like "Tribute" (the song) and "the Darkness" (I should probably listen to the Darkness myself and cool down about them) I think he also likes Oasis.
Percy likes opera(of course UselessCharmMaster look at him) and pop, probably disco (I will survive- stuff)

July 27th, 2004, 5:53 pm
Hermione listens to classical music when other people are listening but when she's alone she secretly busts out the heavy metal.
Harry likes his rock... you know, "My life sucks! I wanna die! I hate everyone and they hate me! Grrrrrr! Arrrrgghhhh!"
Ron does the Eminem type of thing. He's gotta at least LOOK cool, so he likes his rap but still listens to old Disney tapes under the covers at night.
Lupin apparently likes music from the 1950's, according to the PoA movie, at least. So let's go with that.
Professors Flitwick and Snape groove to the country beats together every night at 9. They love their Shania, and who woulda thought?
Sirius (while alive) alternated between Harry's kind of music and occasionally danced naked around 12 Grimmauld Place to Hilary Duff.
Professor McGonagall is all about Frank Sinatra. The calming music winds her down from a wild day teaching that oh so crazy subject of Transfiguration.
Professor Trelawney.... Bjork. That's all I have to say.
And Dumbledore? Of course he DOES like chamber music, but he's always up for something new and different. On any given night you can find him tearing up the dance floor with a couple of brave students in the Room of Requirement turned nightclub.
Avada Kedavra

Harry likes listening to Radiohead, Metallica, and Rage Against the Machine.
Ron, brought up in a strict household, listens to The Cure and The Verve Pipe.
Hermione likes the soft stuff, going country with Garth Brooks and Clay Walker.
Luna is gone in that 60's music...

Sirius listening to Beethoven...that I could picture...him in his room with Buckbeat by himself with his wand...conducting wildly...hair all over the place and buckbeat with a bewilderd look on his face...
Heee!
Lets see-
Dumbledoore- Something peaceful...handel and vivaldi are good choices...but then again...I picture him a Beatles fan..or at least up on his desk air guitaring to Jimi Hendrix with the portraits swaying holding up their lighters....yay!
Snape- Anyone else thinks he just listens to "A Night on Bald Mountain" continuosly in his office before class starts? Or maybe "The Firebird"?
Lupin- Like Dumbledoore...Bach, Vivaldi...but he is young so possibly some Beatles, Beach Boys...Eric Clapton
Lily and James- I'm liking other people's ideas...The Beatles...they probably listened together with Harry and danced him around the room
Harry- Linkin Park, Nirvanna, Pearl Jam, Metallica...he has a temper and seems to be angry alot
Ron- He probably loves Punk rock! My kind of guy! Lots of Greenday, Blink182 and Beastie Boys
The Twins- Same as Ron but I'm sure they'll go crazy over Snoop Dog
Hermione- I want to say Classical Music because she is so studious all the time...but she can be cool...Dave Matthews Band and some good Classic Rock (Carly Simon, Eric Clapton and Led Zepplin)...you go girl!
Ginny- She strikes me as a Top 40s kind of girl...maybe because I still picture as a youngin...she'll grow out of it...for now its Britney, Avril, Maroon 5, Three Doors Down
Luna- Love Her! Enya, Enigma, Yanni....Emu, Really strange stuff
(hey, I adore Enya myself...)

Neville - See Harry.
Luna - Classical and Enya type music.
McGonagall - Classical.
Dumbledore - Chamber music. Some rap once in a while just for kicks =P
Sirius - Heavy metal (Metallica, Megadeth, etc.), classic rock.
Lupin - See Sirius; older rock.
Mr. Weasley - The Beatles, etc.
Snape - See Sirius.
Percy - Classical.
Voldemort - The sound of his victims under the Cruciatus curse.

Voldemort - The sound of his victims under the Cruciatus curse. :rotfl: definitely!
Sirius - I can only say that Sirius would definitely be a Classic Rock kinda guy... in another, non-magical life time he was definitely a guitarist in some minor 70s rock band that toured with the likes of Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple... Sirius Black Sabbath!

The most interesting thing about this thread is that I feel like I'm getting a glimpse of how everyone here holds different views of the personalities of these seemingly set in stone characters. We know how they all act in the book, but I think it's fun to see how they all come out when processed through all of our brains. Especially considering the way we all tend to generalize and sterotype as far as music is concerned. I mean really, we've got some people rooting for a Tori Amos lovin' Hermione, while others go Hillary Duff. Interseting stuff.
Personally, I'd love to see a Sinatra swinging Lupin, but that's obviously my own bias showing through. ^_^

Harry- metal/ rock/ punk ..angry stuff
Ron- classic rock/rock/emo... I could totally see him playing air guitar and doing some funky dances
Hermione- sappy ballads/ maybe a little pop/ 80s... remember she liked Lockhart
Ginny- Arvil Lavigne pop/punk stuff, and then she would get into like Blondie and Pat Benatar
Fred and George- rap/rock/ska/punk/oldies...I think they're pretty eclectic
Dumbledore- I could see him secretly jamming out to some country or folk music
Snape- classical...he would be pretending to conduct the music while making potions
Sirius- old school punk/classic rock when he was a marauder and after getting out of Azkaban probably metal and hard rock
Lupin- jazz/swing/blues- just because he's cool
Cho- pop
Credo Buffa
August 7th, 2004, 6:05 am
Sirius-old skool British punk, like the Clash and the Sex Pistols in his Maurauder days. I could see him listening to something nice & angsty like AFI during OOTP
Lupin-I agree w/ piano music. Something soothing, yet slightly depressing
Hermione-I could see her listening to bubblegum pop
Snape-metal. That would be funny-Snape headbanging. Or maybe classical. Angsty classical
Dumbledore-The beatles! He'd probably like classical, too
McGonagall-something with bagpipes. I just see her as the type who like bagpipes
Luna-Radiohead or maybe Atom & His Package
Neville-80's New Wave!
I love all your ideas! They fit very well, especially Dumbledore and The Beatles! I can totally see it. :) Here are a few others:
Ron--Techno. I don't know why, though.
Hagrid--Old-time folk. You know, lots of songs about sunshine and bluebirds, but with your occastional tear-jerker.
Tonks--Alternative angsty girl stuff, like Tori Amos and Alanis Morrisette.
Mr. Weasley--Jazz, of the Benny Goodman/Glen Miller persuasion.
Draco Malfoy--Showtunes. No not really. . . I just like the image of him belting out Rogers and Hammerstein in front of the mirror in his room at home, and then his father busting in on him, giving him a stern look while Draco hastily pretends he was using the hairbrush to actually brush his hair. . .
Ginny--definitely the bubblegum pop
Hermione--I'd just like to add that I think some 60s/70s anti-war/political stuff would work for her too, just because she'd appreciate the message.
Prof. Trelawney--New Age, Pure Moods-esque stuff.
Oliver Wood--Queen: "We Are the Champions," "We Will Rock You," and "Another One Bites the Dust"
Cho Chang--Celine Dion
Lockhart--He would do a lot of karaoke, esp. cheesy love songs.
Mad-Eye Moody--I don't think he would listen to music. Not only would it cover up the sounds of possible dark wizards approaching, but it might have a subliminal message hidden in it somewhere!
Lucius Malfoy--some kind of deceptively calm Classical/Romantic era stuff that suggests class and intellectual taste, but is non-reflective of the demon within. . . kind of like Hannibal Lector.

Ok, this thread is making me laugh, it's funny.
Harry-rock, angry music, only classical thing I can see him listening to is maybe Moszkowski's "Etude de Virtuosite in G Minor" which no one has ever heard of probably, but believe me, it fits him, it's heck hard too.
Sirius-Who says you can't throw your hair around for Beethoven? :p um same as Harry's except I can see him with Chopin's "Minute Waltz" or "Dog Waltz" whatever you want to call it just because that'd be funny.
Lupin- Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata definitely fits him, the first movement just hits it on the nose. Absolutely beautiful. But not Chopin, no definitely not. And not Debussy, too Romantic.
Voldemort- I'm thinking "Entry of the Gladiators" would be funny. He probably listens to Mozart's "Requiem". Probably something big, boomy, and brassy that's horribly depressingly out of tune. Oh and opera.
Hermione- I think it's just me, but she'd probably like the horn a lot, I'm thinking Mozart's 4 horn concertos and she of course listens to Dennis Brain's great stuff. Strauss too.
Ron- oboe or bassoon. probably the better rendition of "Weasley is Our King" too.
Luna- Holst's "The Planet's: Saturn, Neptune and Uranus" probably and Dukas's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (Mickey Mouse).
Neville- It's be funny if he could sit down and play some of Bach's Inventions or Scott Joplin.
Ginny-pop
Dumbledore- I see Scott Joplin here too, but anything really. I'm thinking really cool big band jazz, or to pump himself, something big and brassy like "Pictures at and Exhiition" the finale thingy.
Flitwick- "Flight of the Bumblebee"
Gred and Forge- "Entry of the Gladiators" once again and Weird Al.
McGonagall- She probably plays the bagpipes.

Harry Potter would probably enjoy British Invasion style music, while Ron would enjoy the latest British pop...Lavender and Parvati would listen to Heart's "Magic Man." Hermione reminds me of piano sonatas...Bill and Charlie remind me of Flamenco for some reason, or some other minor tonalities. Voldemort reminds me of Godsmack, because I despise both.

Why not Chopin? The first composer I thought of for Lupin was Chopin. . . Early/mid Romantic (not insane Wagnerian yet. . . That's Snape :) ), very sensitive, infused with underlying pain and suffering, but not so overpowered with it that you can't feel moments of light-hearted joy. . . Just like Lupin :)

Hermione would listen to music from all over the world: African tribal dance songs, Japanese drums, anything that's not average...
Probably also classical, because her parents definitely listened to classical music and it's also said to make kids smarter...
Dumbledore might love Dance-Music. Samba, Rumba, ChaChaCha,Tango... Just picture him, holding Prof. McGonnagal in his arms, dancing tango with his beard and hair flying after him. :-)
Ron's always into the newest wizard-chart hits. There's no chance he'll get the money to buy the cds, (or whatever wizars use instead), so he'll cling to the radio to listen to every chart show there is to be up to date.
Harry is into Pop-Rock. No unknown rockbands but bands you might hear on the radio. The Dursleys would have never let him buy a cd, so he has a very limited range of music that he overheard on the radio. He does not like the songs the Dursleys listened to!

Neville is into Barry Manilow. This thread is awesome. :rotfl:
I think I cleared up the big Lockhart music mystery: show tunes. :agree:
Hmm. Sirius was most definitely a big fan of 70's rock, but was a hardcore Poison, Guns n' Roses and (dare I say it) Def Leppard fan. And he was a big Ozzy fan too back in the Black Sabbath days. But he had some Barry White stashed for the ladies (that he borrowed from Remus and never gave back).
Harry likes Incubus. A lot. (personal bias)
McGonagall - Lord of the Dance
Oooo, and Lily and James were hopeless devoted disco fans (how else would they have gotten together?!?!). They first confessed their love for Abba, then each other. And Sirius secretly liked Diana Ross. And Remus was a big Earth Wind & Fire fan.
Fred George and Ginny are punks. They have Dead Kennedys and Ramones albums hidden all over the Burrow from Mrs. Weasley.
And I can't throw the idea that Lupin really likes swing music. Carrying a fedora with his jacket over his shoulder.

I'm not good at picking these things for anyone but myself but I have a few ideas.
Sirius-Wild Rock.
Harry-Angry Rock,Goth music. Preferablly Evanescence and Linkin Park. (Hey,he sounds like me!)
McGonnagall-Enya
Hermione-Pop. I don't know if she would have time to :p. I don't even know why I choose pop. Like Britney. EWWW! :nc:
Luna-dreamy music.
Ron-Any genre with songs about being left out,or about friends being jealous. I know there is one specific song like that, but I forgot.
I might be off,but I'm positive about Luna,Harry,Ron,and Sirius.

I can see Voldemort listening to Holst's Mars, Harry listening to Heavy Rock (Much like Dan Radcliffe), Ron listening to the same stuff as Harry, Sirius listening to Aerosmith etc, Lupin listening to Chuck Berry etc. (Johnny B Goode being his favourite song!), Hermione listening to a bit of everything, and Malfoy listening to anything really heavy :D Oh yeah, and Lee Jordan listening to some funky old school hip-hop like Grandmaster Flash etc .... What a topic!!!

Sirius - Light Classical, nothing heavy and morbid like "The Funeral March"
Molly - Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly you know all those hot 50s
Idols.
Harry - Alternative
Arthur - I see him as another Big Band person or maybe Dixieland music.
The Twins - Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
And I love the one about Voldemort liking Manson... That is totally on.

I think Fred and George would be into punk rock - things like 'What's my Age Again' by Blink 182 and 'The Anthem' by Good Charlotte. Oh yeah, and I can SO see them listening to Tenacious D, and, for some strange reason, Feeder.
Sirius - Led Zeppelin, classic rock... I don't know.
Harry - Nu-metal, probably. Or something full of angst. Linkin Park?
Ginny - Femenine rock! Girl power, type of thing. Avril Lavigne, Pink. I don't quite know why, but I can also see her listening to Eminem and Gwen Stefani!
Lupin - Coldplay, or something classical and deep.
Tonks - I can see her having a pretty wide range of taste, but mostly in the metal/rock/punk end of the spectrum. Something probably a bit quirky and fun.

*digs up*
Im a big music geek with strong opinions who couldnt resist:)
Harry:he'd probably listen to any of those "angst" bands but for good angst I'd like to think that he'd put on Henry Rollins. He defenity need to hear Rollins
Hermione:definetly classical. I'm not sure what composers but its the most likely fit for her.
Ron:They Might Be Giants, Beck, and the Beastie Boys
Lupin:I LOVED the music in the movie! He might like classical as some have suggested but he strikes me as someone here said "Rocking out to Sinatra". I picture him reading, a glass of wine in his hand with Cole Porter playing on his victrola and I'm snuggled up beside him, and... I've said too much:) I also picture him liking the 70s singer-songwriters, maybe Cat Stevens or Paul Simon, and I really think he likes Bob Dylan too. I also picture him liking Gershwin, esp. Rhapsody In Blue. In general he strikes me much more jazz than classical
Sirius and James: oh, old school British punk all the way baby! Sure they'd like the classics like Hendrix and Zepplin but it's the punk that i think they'd love the most. Speaking which I have this mental image of Sirius having posters of all these great musicians rocking out in their poster frames, all visiting each other and jammin:)
The Death Eaters and Voldermort: Wagner of course! Even if he was a muggle, the fact that Hitler liked him seals the image in my head of the DEs blaring Ride of the Valkeryies or however you spell it.
Hagrid:for some reason I picture him listening to Renassaince era music
Tonks:Weird Sisters of course, but i'd imagine shed have broad music taste, but maybe along the lines of the Ramones and the Strokes
Luna:insanely experimental. I also agree with whoever pictured her listening to the White Album for the hidden messages:)
Lily:Beatles, definetly, and probably similar tastes to Lupin. I also picture her liking Laura Nyro for some reason. I picture her growing up liking all that 60s pop and rock as a kid.
Fred and George: Queen of course! They also would like Monty Python songs.
Molly and Arthur:The old standards; Sinatra, Billie Holiday, anything described as "martini music"

Ron: Rap. 50 Cent, Eminem, etc.
Hermione: Pop mainly. She also likes disco and classical.
Sirius: The Doors, the Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, The Animals, The Yardbirds, Blue Oyster Cult, Queen,The Clash, Burce Springsteen, The Jam, Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, Aerosmtih.
Lupin: Big Band, as we all know from the movie. He also likes R.E.M, Coldplay, and The Beatles.
Ginny: The Darkness, Usher, Gun and Roses, Jet, No Doubt, Maroon 5, Good Charlotte, Aerosmith, OutKast, Def Leppard.
Draco: 80's hair metal.
Tonks: Weird Sisters (obvisouly), David Bowie, Dropkick Murphys, The Ramones, Queen, No Doubt, Billy Idol, Duran Duran, Blondie, The Jam
Lily: British Invasion stuff (The Beatles, The Who, The Stones, The Kinks, The Hollies, etc, etc) Also some pychadelic stuff, like Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane. And for some random reason David Bowie, The Cars, and Pink Floyd.
Neville: Indie Rock. Also Counting Crows, Devo, and Tears For Fears.
Luna- Folk, and weird stuff like Enya and Bjork.
Fred and George- Pop Punk (Sum 41, Blink-182, etc) And Werid Al. Lots and Lots of Weird Al.

I think Sirius would have been into metal, or any form of rock music from his time.
Harry, (given his personality) would be into Staind when he was down, and Green Day when he's okay.
Hermione-..I think she's alternative. Maybe the Donnas?
Ginny is a teeny-bopper, no doubt about that.
Fred and George would either be into rap, or rock. The rebellious music.
I saved Ron for last because well...I'm not sure would Ron would be into. I think he's a little eclectic.
Draco's a metal head, the dangerous kind that try and KEELL YOU in the mosh pit (you DO NOT wanna get pushed into this dude, TRUST ME).
Pansy-likes whatever Draco likes, she has no opinions of her own.

As for the other characters, I'm not sure.
Ron? - Ron's probably into stuff like Suede and Pulp.
Hermione? - She thinks pop is stupid. She likes Mozart because Mozart helps her study.
Fred/George? - Radiohead and Weird Al.
Ginny? - She's a troublemaker. I suspect she turns Fred and George on to their musical tastes.
Malfoy? - Draco is definitely into the more punkish sounding goth music. He's into the likes of Malign, Sisters of Mercy, The Wake, and Christian Death. Possibly Current 93 and Legendary Pink Dots. When he's particularly angry he probably puts in the Rammstein CDs.
Neville? - He likes pop. He's ashamed to admit it, but he enjoys ABBA.
Luna? (I bet she would like dreamy sounding music, like Enya) - Luna listens to the music in her head.
McGonagall? - What else? The Royal Dragoon Pipe and Drum Corps.
Flitwick? - He's a closet head banger.
Lupin? - He's into swing, or weren't you paying attention during the movie?
Snape? - Heavy baroque. And J.S. Bach.
Percy? - He's a bit of a music snob. He won't listen to anything unless it's rock and roll from the 60s like Syd's Pink Floyd and The Who.
Harry definitely listens to hard core punk. Misfits, Black Flag, etc. He occasionally listens to stuff like Coldplay and Radiohead. He will also listen to William Shatner CDs just to make the Dursleys angry.

Ron - new rock
Hermione - Einaudi, Joss Stone, Ronan Keating
Fred/George - Zebda, Madness, The Cheeky Girls
Ginny - Westlife (and other rubbishy boy bands)
Malfoy - Kylie (in secret!)
Neville - new rock
Luna - Terry Wogan's The Floral Dance, Prodigy
McGonagall - Bizet's Carmen
Flitwick - any hippy rubbish
Lupin - Thin Lizzy
Snape - I doubt Snape listens to much music, but he would probably go for depressing classical stuff
Percy - Kylie as well!
Dumbledore - 1950s rock n roll, Verdi, Baby D!
Harry - old and new rock

Ron - For Ron, I'd imagine some punk would fit him fine. His personality reflects on stuff like Misfits, GBH, and SNFU...
Hermione - Most likely emo or screamo. Killers, Alexisonfire, all that jazz fits her in my opinion.
Fred/George - Defintely anything that breaks limits, so probably hardcore rap such as NWA and Talib Kwali, as well as death metal, such as Cryptopsy.
Ginny - Pop-punk stuff, easy to get into and catchy, so probably stuff like Avril, AFI, and others..
Malfoy - Probably hardcore punk, so Exploited and GBH would come into play, anything fast and abraisive, or hateful.
Neville - Probably power metal, stuff that is catchy and optomistic, like Sonata Arctica and Dragonforce. He'd like classic metal, too.
Luna - Hmmmm, my best guess would be Cure, maybe Tiger Army. She seems like the kind of person who would adore Rob Smith.
McGonagall - I honestly don't know. My best guess would be Bob Dylan, maybe Simon & Garfunkel.
Flitwick - Probably folk. So of course Joni Mitchell would come into play here, as well as some of McGonagall's preferences.
Lupin - Probably hard rock, Guns n' Roses, AC/DC, Scorpions. He seems like the kind of person who likes his chaos tasteful and reserved.
Snape - Probably progressive rock here, I see him listening to King Crimson, Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, and Pink Floyd.
Percy - Eh, I have no idea.

Ron - alturnative. nervauna, soundgarden, ect.
Hermione - whatever was on the radio (not pop though)
Fred/George - skate punk, hands down no question about it. stuff like NOFX and strung out. maybe some skapunk like less than jake as well
Ginny - old school punk, skate punk, and ska punk. i could see her rocking out in her room to the clash.
Malfoy - Eminem, because he'd think it was badass
Neville - evanescenes
Luna - synth pop. i could see her listening to apoptygma berzerk easily
McGonagall - the pogues :rotfl:
Lupin - hard to say... classic rock i suppose
Snape - industreal, couldn't imagine anything else but i could see him listening to something like wumpscut
Percy - classical, he'd think it would make him sophisticated
Dumbledore - i'd say classical and baroque era music. i think he'd find the romantic era too blusterous.
Harry - nu metal and metal, heavy angsty music but he wouldn't be into enough to get into real hardcore

Hm.
Harry: I heard Daniel likes punk... I dont remember where I read that... But it wouldn't surprise me if Harry did too, especially in OOTP when he's all angry .
Ron: I dont see him really being a music person. Whatever everyone else is listening to in the wizarding world.
Hermione: something really pretentious lol. It has to be smart for her to like it. Coldplay she'd probably love. U2 she'd like because of their political activism.
Lupin: Funny, I always saw him as a Country person. The jazz I heard on POA really surprised me. He probably likes Johnny Cash and newer country, like Kenny Chesney.
Sirius: Heh... Glam rock. David Bowie. And he'd like classic rock of his era.
Snape: Gothic. This isn't much of a surprise XD . He probably likes Metallica too. Unforgiven fits him perfectly.
Voldemort: Cannibal Corpse and those screamy heavy metal things. Or big band jazz like Duke Ellington (sp?).
Luna: really really reeaaallllyyyy wierd Japanese anime music. She probably likes comedy cd's too, and spoken word instead of music. She also probably loves spacey New Age stuff.
Hagrid and McGonagall: Traditional Celtic and Irish pub music.
Dumbledore: This was already stated in the book. He likes Baroque music.

*Smirks to self* For some reason this thread just gives me a mental picture of Snape sitting on his dungeon floor swaying backwards and forth to kumbayah.
Seriously, he'd most likely listen to some heavy rock or industrial metal...I remember once I had a dream about Snape driving a muggle car with Lupin, Harry and Sirius as passengers (Don't ask why they were driving a muggle car I have no clue) and Snape was blasting out songs that were designed to anger the passengers. He played "Bad Moon Rising" for Lupins benefit, poison by Alice Cooper (and was singing along in an obnoxious tone) Master of Puppets by Metallica which sounds frighteningly like Voldemort putting someone under an imperious curse and various other songs...erm...yes, I am mad.
Back on topic, Lupin would listen to very chilled out stuff, the sort of thing you'd listen to on Sunday morning such as Coldplay, Keane, Travis...
I agree with whoever said Harry would have a similar taste to Dan Radcliffe...
Percy would most likely listen to Beethoven and stuff like that...
Sirius reminds me of the sort of guy that would listen to 70's rock.

I could definately see Sirius listening to The Ramones :p
but it was funny that somebody should mention him liking Beethoven, as I have just finished watching "Leon" and Gary Oldman's character in that likes Beethoven
"I like these calm moments before the storm. It reminds me of Beethoven. Can you hear it? It's like when you put your head to the grass and you can hear it growin' and you can hear the insects. Do you like Beethoven?
You don't like Beethoven. You don't know what you're missing. Overtures like that get my...juices flowing. So powerful. But after his openings, to be honest, he does tend to get a little ****ing boring. That's why I stopped.
You're a Mozart fan. I love him too. I looooove Mozart! He was Austrian you know? But for this kind of work
[imitates playing the piano]
he's a little bit light. So I tend to go for the heavier guys. Check out Brahms. He's good too."
I just thought that was really funny :rotfl:

Snape - The Cure, Meatloaf
Fred and George Weasley - Phish and other jambands - they would thrive in the parking lot economy
Lupin - jazz (this was implied in the film actually)
Dumbledore - just about everything
McGonnogal - Mozart
Lockhart - recordings of himself covering Beatles tunes, the Bee Gees
Luna - the Crash Test Dummies, Joni Mitchell, Bjork
James and Sirius - Jethro Tull, Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival
Lilly - James Taylor
Ron - Green Day, Tool, Weird AL, Weezer, anything a typical teenage boy would like
Harry - various british rock ie, radiohead, oasis, pink floyd, beatles
Hermione - female artists she admires for taking risks in a male dominated music world, ie Indigo Girls, Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, etc.
I think of Ravenclaw kids being into intelligent, hipster "thinking man's music" Tom Waits, Ryan Adams, Wilco, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Modest Mouse, or random indie bands that only uber hip people have ever heard of. Progressive techno/electronica is big too.
They Might Be Giants would be a favorite among Gryffindors, as would lots of boisterous ska, punk-pop, or power pop. Think Mountain Dew commercial.
Hufflepuffs would be condusive to alot of bluegrass, acoustic music, and rootsy jambands like the grateful dead or the allman brothers. They all love Widespread Panic, and frat rock like Dave Matthews and John Mayer as well.
Slytherins lean towards darker/angrier stuff, but they also idolize Frank Sinatra for some reason.

Staind is not intelligent in depth music...It is music for the masses.
Ron would not listen to country...period.
Lupin Listens to swing music...like in the movie, I can't picture it any other way
I imagine Voldemort as more of a chopin guy
Neville...i dunno
James and Sirius....I'm leaning towards something in their own time not american either....
You people who pick american music...Popular american music anyway(good charlotte, simple plan, all that ****) forget that these people don't listen(and hopefully wouldn't listen anyway) to that rubbish.
