View Full Version : How do you treat your Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix book?

How do you guys treat your harry potter and the Order of the Phoenix book? is the question for this thread. I have my OotP book on top of my folded Hogwarts robe on my desk. If I had a pedestal I would put my book on it and put it in the center of my room. Every time my sister comes into my room and even gets close to my book I tell her not to come any closer because she could hurt it. I also don't have any type of water come within 6 inches of it. I don't know if I'm the only person that does this and that's why I started this thread. But enough about me. How do you treat your OotP Book?

When I first got OotP, I took the cover off of it, because when reading the book, I take it everywhere, and I don't want OotP to face the same fate as SS's cover. Other than that, I just keep it on my shelf. Although I did give my brother a 10 minute talking about how he should take care of it, when he said that he wanted to read it.

After reading it the first time, I carefully cut each page out, (my reason is posted elsewhere) did what I had to do, and carefully stuck it back together again, doesn't look so good now but I have enjoyed reading it 10 times in it's current form

I wanted to take off the cover to read it, but I couldn't bear to!

I don't treat my books like collectors items because i just love to read them and I don't want to worry about them looking good too. I always break the binding really well, take the cover off, and just let it settle wherever. I'm kind of a pig, sad. Oh well.

The answer to the question would be not that good :D Unfortunately my OotP is looking far worse than any of the previous four books.

I have one copy that sits next to the computer for quick reference and another that sits on my bedside table.
I don't pay particular attention to them. They're not that precious to me (I'm reassured by the fact that should something happen to one of my copies I can always buy another one).

I treat mine quite terribly :D One is on my table looking all neat and good, but its dust cover is scrunched up at the bottom of my cupboard. The other one is in Nick's room (where it should be coz it's his book). His dust cover is where mine is though. I've only read the whole book once but dipped in and out for quotes at least 43 times :D

I need a new one. Mine's on its last legs; perhaps I shouldn't read it in the bath or spill cola on it? It's actually the first hardback I've managed to read to destruction which is quite a feat. I just hope it stays legible till the paperback comes out.....

Mine's looking pretty battered. It's dust cover is all creased up and there's stains and creases all through the pages. The Prisoner of Azkaban looks the worse out of all my books, for some reason. I must have read that one the most, and the most vigorously.

Regardless of what avid book collectors might think, it is the contents of the book that hold the value. The rest is cheap material. I value the story, but the book itself is in a bit of a way. I wonder if large tear stains splodged over the loss of Sirius Black will give the book more value in the future? No? How's about tea stains?

When I got it, I took the cover off and just read through it and kept the cover elsewhere for few months
It is in a fairly good condition except for a split in the middle, mainly because I haven't had time to dig into the books at all since the summer.
I don't treat them like they are collector items or something (I assure you it it was PS first edition, then I would.. But OotP first Edition, you could easily get another one off of Amazon. There are millions of OotP 1st editions out there)
Compared to how I treat my $200 CD Player, I would have to say that the OotP books are being treated in a very noble manner....

Erm, well, my dust jacket things haven't been since since June 21st... and as for the book...
One is beside the computer with post-it flags stuck in it at reference points for the fan fics i'm writing and the other is- and the other is-
Good question where the other is... hmm... It's in my room somewhere...

Hmm, well mines in my little bookcase I made a school, silently (I hope) waiting eagerly for it's next read.
It\s in pretty good nic, not that a try to keep it that way. It just happens like that. It's not as if I open each page with a pair of tweezers, I read it normal like :D

Mine looks good, but when you get to it on closer inspection, the edges are a bit bent. I dropped it all over the place a few weeks ago, and its been to Armidale with me twice since i got it... Travel tends to bash a book about a bit.
And there are a lot of smudged pages. I dont know why, but everytime i read it, it gets worse. The ink must be shoddy or something :)

Mines ok, though God alone knows where the dust jacket walked off to. It's the only hardback of the series I have, as I only read the first book after the paperback of GOF was released - I read the first four books in four days.
I'm not going to treat it like it's made of glass, I'm only human and I eat chocolate while reading..................
Hopefully being a hardback it'll last longer than PS, cos I'm on my fourth copy (the others having been read literally to tatters).

i treat mine fairly well, it sits on a shelf on my bedside table, i eat while reading it, but i wouldnt dare eat chocolate while reading it! but i was REALLY annoyed cos my family got a HUGE crack in the spine of the book.... i wAs very annoyed after that! :grumble: :D

I didn't even know about Harry Potter till the fourth book came out so I dragged my dad 2 the bookstore 2 get a copy even though i knew nuthing about it but had 2 get one being the spoilt brat i am. I bought the first edition of gof and kept that in perfect condition. I put it in a clear see-through bad and wore gloves when i read it. But with ootp i raed it quite norally but tried not too make a crease in the spine coz i didn't want it to look lyk my poa book. i luv dat book. so yeah.. it's ok i s'pose. there's a few creases and my cousin sister took it 2 poland while she was teaching there(dunno how i would've done it) but she brang it home 2 me. It seems kinda strnge when you tell someone your book has gone to poland and back to englad. lol! xXx

Sigh...
Me and my books. I'm afraid that I'm so obbsessive that none of my books have got creases down the spine. It's a sort of pet hate. One thing though:as I worked my way through OotP for the 1st time, all my pages got darker from my hands. It's the way I read them.

I am in the process of re-reading OoTP for the third time, and so I often take it to Uni and read it during my time off. Since I am constantly moving all about the place with the book I make sure to take the cover off first. It's already slightly worn at the edges and it's way too pretty to get muddled(don't want to get Harry's pretty face tainted or creased :D ). Plus it's my first hard cover of Harry Potter and I really want to take care of it. ;)

At first, I was afraid to let the slightest crumb touch my book, but then I realized that since my copy of OotP was going to be shared between four people (me, my brother, and my parents), it couldn't stay clean forever. Granted, it's still in good shape, but I KNOW that something is going to happen to it... Right now, my copy resides next to my computer for quick references :D

Mine has been through the wars, alright. It's a hardback so it isn't too damaged, but it's travelled quite a lot. At the minute it's in my bed. When I get tired and fall asleep at night (amazing, the things I do when I get tired) I just sling it on the pillow next to me. It's in there somewhere...
Like Cat has said, it's just a copy of the book. I could get another. The pages are a bit splodged from the History of Magic OWL onwards, and some are bent. I like to slide the pages under my thumbnail and bend them up to make a weird curve in every book that I read, so it's got some marks. I also read books while brushing my teeth, propping them against the taps, so it's got water and soap marks on it. Lastly, there's a few salsa stains on some of the pages :) I'm a big fan of salsa. Yum yum.

Mine is a limited edition copy of OotP with special artwork on the insides of the covers and a special cover. I really ought to buy a new cheapy one to keep for quick reference in place of my special edition copy.
Anyway, My only copy of OotP is my special edition which is currently sitting beside all of my other Harry Potter books on my computer stand for quick reference.

Iv built a shrine around it and i worship it constantly everyday, the shelf it sits on is very sacred and cannot be touched by normal fingers you need to wear protective gloves if you want to handle it, i turn each page with a pair of tweezers as not to rip them, my room needs to be dust free before i even think about touching it, i also must wear a protective mask because breathing on it to much can damage the pages.
No seriously mine sits with my other Harry Potter books in my book shelf, it gets no special treatment from me, because JK has not signed it yet, if she does however then i will consider it a priceless artifact and will probably treat it as iv mentioned above

I treat pretty much all of my books quite well, and OotP is certainly not an exception. Though it doen't get any special treatment, either. ;) It wanders from its spot alongside my other favorite reads on my bookshelf, to the kitchen counter, to next to my computer for convenience. Heehee, there it is under the speaker.
Though, while it's in good condition, the story is what matters. I can endure a few dog-ears and smudges.

It's sleeping in my bookcase that's strictly for my HP books. I have my 5 American ones, 4 British ones, and 1 Spanish one in it, along with a few pieces of dumb merchandise that I got despite hating the art. I do really like my Dumbledore statue though, it's not cheesy like most of the other merchandise ;).
I used to lug it back and forth every day at school, but my the cover was starting to rip and my backpack was extremely heavy, so I retired it to my bookcase. Other than a few tears, it has a some food stains from when I was reading it for the first time and read it through all of my meals, but that's about it.

I take care of OOTP the same I take care of all my books. I was taught when I was very little to take care of my books, and I've always done so. It doesn't matter that OOTP is one of my least favorite HP books, I still paid for it and enjoyed it, so I'll take care of it. :agree:

I read it, I put it on the shelf with it's dust cover on it when it's not being read. I don't mangle it, but I'm not overly careful. It's still in really nice condition, although it doesn't look brand-new. Compared to my other well loved books, it's extremely nice. My well loved books are all well-worn.

All of my HP books stand up in the centre of my room, in a straight line, and underneath PS is a box full of newspaper articles since 1999 about Harry Potter.
I used to be overly-obsessed with Harry Potter, and burst out crying if any book was put on top of a HP book, and the HP books was too "precious" to have anything on top of it. Ive grown out of it now, but I still dislike it when I see another book onto of it. And I still dont want to put HP on a shelf like the rest of my books...Dear me, I do sound like a weirdo...
Ive never tried to keep my books neat and clean. OotP has chocolate stains all over it, grease marks from something, water, a very tiny tear on one of the pages...Its unrealistic for me to keep it in a mint condition - I read it everyday, and Im a messy person anyway.

I did the same. I don't want it to be broken or something like that. It's the book I waited so long becuse our posts are SO slow (I got it on 30thth June) and pait more expensive than it is in bookstores - because of posts, again, and because it is HARRY POTTER!! It has a special place on my bookshelf. I sometimes just take itand hold it in my hands. It's really special feeling...

All my HP books are at reach while on my computer, so that I can pull them down and get vital information from them. I treat all of the HP books with the greatest care and infact I am considering buying new ones just so that I don't ruin the old ones. I am thinking about going to Edinburgh on the night the book comes out, just to see if J.K.Rowling will turn up as she normally stays to sign books in her home town there.
If not, we will still have a trip up Scotland and be able to sit in the countryside and read the book anyway.

I keep my OotP with all my other HP books on my shelf far away from the rest of my family (and my dogs who like to eat books :) ). The only other person who I let read my HP books was my younger sister but I took the covers of them first and when she took a break from reading I made sure she put the book in a nice safe place. With my family they have a habbit of reading books and the books always seem to fall apart. So I'm not taking a chance with my HP books.

I guess I'm a bit pricky when it comes to keeping my books in order. I do get especially nitpicky when it comes to the books that I treasured dearly, like my HP series. In fact, my friends who borrowed them knew they have to abide by my three Golden Rules of reading a book:
1) No folding of tips of pages (I always provide them with bookmarks whenever they borrowed my books :D ).
2) Absolutely no book-spine lines resulting acts, like marking the pages by erecting the book into a tent-shape (hehe.. it annoys me to have spine-lines on my paperbacks).
3) No highlighting, penning, or jotting down, or any scribbling allowed either (it's a distraction to read side comments or footnotes made by other than the author  )
I plastic-wrapped all my favorite books (those that are paperbacks anyways), however, since my OotP is a hard-cover, I don't feel the need to wrap it. But I do take off the jacket whenever I (tried) reading it.

I keep all my HP books in series order on my bookshelf. But I'm really careful when reading OotP - I take off the outer cover to stop it getting creased or dirty, and try not to bend the spine too far. No matter how careful I try to be with my things, something always happens to them anyway!

Yup, very much so, though I took the jacket off for preservation reasons more than avoiding an annoyance :)
Some hardcover OotP books for rent, or those in libraries that I've discovered, were plastic-wrapped with the jacket's on. It's like having two skins for a book.

I really don't treat my books all that great. I mean, I'm careful not to rip them or bend them too much, but I don't do anything special to protect them.
And, I've gotten used to reading hardback books with the cover on.

I think I treat my book pretty good overall... all of my HP books are separated from the rest of my "normal" books... I have a select few that sit on the shelf above my bed and all the HP books are there... I also take the covers off when I read them, so the only cover I have that's rather beat up is SS... but yeah, OotP is in pretty good condition!

Most of my HP books are on the top shelf of the bookcase in my closet, safe from wandering hands. I can't seem to find my OotP book, a week ago it was next to my bed but now I think someone moved it. All my HP books are in a glass cabinet, and I think they're in quite good condition, perhaps except the last two, it's impossible not to break the binding when reading those. Luckily, my covers are i mint condition, and they're covering the fact that those books look a little battered.

On the top shelf of my computer desk is where I keep all my HP books. In order. Between my sorting hat book ends. No one is allowed to take them down but me.
The book cover is not on the OotP book. I have it in a special place for safe keeping. The other books are paper backs. I didn't get into the series until most of them were available in paperback. I didn't have to wait long until the 4th one came out on paperback.

I always take the dustjacket off before reading (it bugs me while I'm trying to read the book) and usually it lays on a desk until I'm finished. Then I stick the book in my bookshelf with the other 4. All are in OK condition, but OotP is the only hardcover (the rest are paperback) and of course paperbacks start to look ratty really soon. OotP is in perfect condition. The only thing I do to keep my books non-ratty is that unlike all my other books I use a bookmark instead of dog-earing the pages. For HP, I use a silver bookmark.

I took the nice blue cover off and hid it in a safe place where it won't get dirty or ripped. The covers or my copies of GoF and PoA are nearly torn to shreds because of them being thrown about in my room, in my backpack, etc, etc. The pages are also starting to fall out of the binding in those books too from me reading them so much (SS and CoS are in much better shape, but the paperback copies of those aren't). I'm trying to keep OotP in better condition.

I, like most of you, usually took off the cover when reading it because the cover kept slipping off sometimes and I was scared of damaging it or making it crumpled or something....the first time I got the book I wouldn't even let anybody touch it so my younger cousins decided to play "I-dare-ya-to-put-your-finger-on-OOTP" game once and see how my reaction will be like.... :grumble:
But yea even now I still took care of it. I won't let it be near any wet stuff and I disallow my mom to put anything on top of the book. I wouldn't touch it if my hands are dirty. I always keep the book within a safe distance and where I can get a clear view of since I tend to misplace and forget where I put my things sometimes.

When I'm not reading it, it stands next to the first 4 books. When I'm reading it, I take the cover off. I never leave it lying open on it's back. My mom has a habit of doing that with mine and my sisters HP books and we scream every time she does it. :D Also, if anyone else reads it or touches it I warn them first that if they get anything on it or damage it I might just have to kill them.
My sister and I are paranoid because her GoF fell apart after 2 reads and she treated that thing like gold. She wouldn't even let me touch it when she got it.

Which one?
The one that's actually mine sits on the shelf dedicated to Harry Potter books (British, America, French, as well as those schoolbooks and a few fan books...and my chocolate frog cards, and all that, but anyway). The cover of the one that's not mine, somehow ripped when I was reading it. I let my friend borrow MY copy because she's strange and hadn't read it yet, and I nearly freaked because it's MY BOOK. My precious.... She had it for a week. I don't take off the jackets because they make excellent bookmarks, which is probably why the first four are about to fall apart... Oh well, when I'm famous they'll sell for millions on Ebay! :)

When I first get a book, I always try to treat it well, making sure nothing will stain it ect. But I've found out that when your planning on reading the book 10 times over, having it in this condition really isn't an option.
Besides, I've come to think that breaking the binding, spill stuff on it, or dog earing a book isn't really mistreatment anymore. I rather like to think its being "well- loved."
Such is the case with this book.
Right now its in fairly good condition, though some parts of it got a little mucked up when I lent it to my friend.

Compared to my other books, it's the crowned glory of my bookshelf. Even though I still take it to the bathroom to read and occasionally get the cover wet, I've covered it with adhesive wrap so the latter is not that big of a problem.
I usually dog ear my books, but for my HP, I've created special bookmarks for them. I also try to keep them as far away from my brother as possible. My copy of PoA still bears the marks of its last encounter with my brother and a ballpoint pen.

Hear, Hear, ohmygawwd. That book is my prized possession. That and GoF are the only books out of my HP series that is still in perfect shape. The rest have their covers all ripped in different places because I read them so many times and they were paperback. Whenever I read OoTP or GoF, I took the book covers off so they wouldn't get ruined and they would stay all pretty. I don't have a reason to keep them like that though, especially since I probably will never sell those books.

I try to keep my book away from trouble, but I don't mind if it gets a bit scoffed, because it makes it look cozier and more readable. It's sitting under the rest of my books, propped against my little Hermione bookend. I actually really don't like the bookend, but what can you do?

Believe it or not, I have it placed on my bed and I read it every night to put me to sleep. It still looks neat, but it's really overused from constant reading. The sleeve is what I take care of very much--neatly folded and put away from dust and mites and what not. My other four hadcovers are what's still brand new. I have the softcovers to use when reareding the first four books.

I ended up having two copies because of some confusion; so one of them I haven't even read and the other I stripped of its cover on the first day because I can't read a book with the cover on them. I have all of the OWL tests written in on the first page for easy reference, but no detailed notes.
Then I was reading it in a Chinese restaurant and my parents were with me and the waitress said that alot of kids were bringing in thier OotP to read in the restaurant. I gave her a death stare when she walked away because I hate looking like I'm five years old and especially being called a kid by someone my own age. Because I really am mature as you can tell .

(I waited in line long enough:) ) Actually, my books are on my living room shelf, and my children (3 and 5) know they aren't allowed to touch them. Book 5's dust cover got slightly bent once when I accidentally put something on top of it and I freaked out. I also noticed a tiny grease spot on a page the last time I read Book 5--I must have been eating nachos or something. All my books are hardcover, and I freak when people dog-ear/bend back my magazines--even my parents:)

With reverence? Only kidding.
I treat how I treat any other book. I try not to tear it, break it's spine etc. Although I have scribbled a couple of phrases in the margins. Anyway, it's a book. Not some kind of ornament. It's meant to be read, have a couple of thumbprints here and there.
Unfortunately, OoTP won't get any special attention from me. :p

All 5 of my books sit next to my computer (where I am always at.) I usually have to use them for some sort of refernce for posts I amke on here etc. and I really don't want to go searching my floor. Wait! I can't even find that! Well, I'm lucky it looks better than SS. The cover to that got a little deformed. It doesn't look too pretty.

My OotP has been to Phoenix and back now but it still looks pretty good just a little dirty on the outside of the pages. I mainly just take the covers of my hardbacks so I can read them without getting annoyed at the cover moving around and so no matter the damage I do to the spine it still looks nice sitting on my bookshelf. I also try to use book markers instead of dogearing the pages when I stop in the middle so that way the pages stay pretty nice too. When you know your going to be reading a book a few (understatement) times then you got to be semi-easy on it or it won't last through all the readings. :)

I found a copy of it in a cheap dinky shop, and it was soft cover with a picture of a bird that looked like a sparrow. No doubt it was a pirate. I bought it anyway, and it's exactly the same story, but the soft cover is already beginning to tear. I now understand why all the OOTP (the real one's that is) are hard cover. But I hate the dust cover things. Mine sits on the book shelf and it looks like I have 2 copies of the book!!!

Mine sits on the book shelf next to my son's copy. His looks pristine as he can't even read yet...(long story) Mine seems to be pristine on the outside, but the margins in the first two chapters have occasional chocolate smudges. The book store where I bought it from on midnight handed out huge chocolate bars with every book. It was two in the morning before I got home.... I had to start it and what with the free chocolate and all I figgured there were dementors somewhere close to the start of the book... so you know...

Well, you get the picture! Anyhoo, every single time I read OotP I always have to take the cover off and place it somewhere so it won't get ruined. I try to turn the pages carefully so they won't tear. I also try to keep my pages clear of food stains and I try to remember not to fold the pages and instead to use a bookmark!

Well I am rather fussy about taking care of any book that I own. OotP is treated the same as the rest. Never leave the dust jacket on when I am reading it. Neat and tidy in the book case. Never loaned out although I did offer to lend it to my sister. But she has not read any of the series yet and wants to wait until they are all movies...yes I know that is years away but there you go.
I do tend to leave the whole HP series near to my desk for reference at boards like this one. How lazy is that?

I have loved my HP books nearly to death. I dropped one in the pool (it dried out just fine, though it's a little wrinkled), have spilled coffee on several pages, and sometimes underline things or make notes in the margins. IMHO books are meant to be read and loved, not treated with kid gloves.

My copy of OotP is on my desk, preserved in as near to mint condition as I can manage to maintain. It's not pristine, but no unseemly spills, wrinkles or stains have marred it's cover or pages. Slightly neurotic, I know, but I enjoy reading clean, smooth books :).
My other copies are shared with my brothers, and are... not kept as well as my scruples would have them. I have found that young boys are utterly sensory impaired when it comes to the slime and crusts that so often mar their reading material.

I keep it in well enough condition. There aren't any stains or smudges in it, although it did rip on a couple pages. But that's nothing compared to my Prisoner of Azkaban book, that has whole entire sections detached from it.

the only reason that my OotP book has lasated this long is because it's hardback. my first copy of the 1st 4 were all paper back and i pretty much tore them to pieces. i'm in the process of replacing all my other s with their paperback counter parts.

My Philosopher's Stone has a few pages falling out, because it's paperback. The second one, is perrty good still. although, my Prisoner of Azkaban is creased and folded and old. My Order of the Phoenix is in good condition. It's sitting on my shelf next to the other books, and it's not dirty or anything. Although, my Goblet of Fire's cover broke off last year from too much reading and travelling and stuff, so when i went to school, i put extra sticky glue on the spine and let it sit that way with 5 dictionaries on top of it, so the glue would stick and it would be fine. My class thought i was a wierdo-considering that many of them don't like HP.

Hmm well never thought about it, but has loaned mine out, noone is allowed to crease the pages. Hates! dog earred pages. Never would let anyone spill anything on it, or let them in a precarious position. But they are well loved and read so the spine is creased for books 1-4. My Ootp is hardback it looks much better, no creases yet. I left the dustcover on was to worried someone might get something on the hard cover. I was not interested in the picture on the dustcover, it is there to protect my book. I may have to buy them again in the end, because 1-4 are going to be read alot more in the future. Oh well...books are made for reading and it is evident that OotP has been read plenty of times in my house. But all my HP books are in my room at the foot of my bed, inside the closet, on the first self of my bookself along with my copies of LotR and Yearbooks, and Who's Who Among American High School Students...so yeah...actually at the moment my OotP book is on my bed and then when I sleep it will be on my desk...so when I wake up I can just start reading without having to get out of bed!

I treat my books with absolute care, but they only sit on an old bookshelf in my room. Although, when I find a series or a single book that really stands out I put it on a shelf that hangs on my wall so that I can see it easier. I always feel better when I have a book, or can at least see it...Right now, I have the 5 Harry Potter books, Lord of the Rings, and the two novelizations of the Spider-Man movies on my special shelves, although I'm thinking about puting my collection of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" books on the shelf also. I'm very VERY stern and strict about loaning out books. If it's visibly damage I become very angry and can rant on for a good hour. In fact, I don't break the spine on any of my paperback books, which makes it somewhat hard to read, but it looks so much better when it's on the shelf if it doesn't have a bunch of little cracks and creases rippling across the spine... Yes, I know

I've read OOTP only twice but its in very good condition nonetheless. It's hardcover so I'm hoping it won't get too tattered by the time the HP series ends. It might be nice to buy the entire boxed set but I'd better start saving now if I do want to purchase it as it will most likely be ridiculously expensive. There are a few strawberry stains on random pages in the book since the first time I read OOTP I was busy going strawberry picking too so I had a bit of a problem with the staining lol.

When it comes to my audioCDs, because they cost so much (Especially the UK OotP, crikey!), I tend to make a single copy for myself, then put the originals away. That way if I accidently scratch them or drop them, I can simply pull out the original and make another copy. I can also lend them out with confidence. :) (And making a single copy for yourself isn't even breaking any copyright laws, so yay!)
My paper copy of OotP is a hardback, and I treat it like I treat all the rest of my books--that is, very well. I'm not afraid to use it, though--I think my hardcover is currently on the coffee table in my den, next to the computer. Very handy. Right next to my Encyclopedia of Middle Earth. :)

Well, my one and only copy (so far) is resting peacefully and in minst condition next to the other four, which I rebought at Sams in a special-edition "first four books" box. All these books are on the top of a shelf that displays some of my other Harry Potter memorabilia. Holding them up on either end are Harry Potter bookends I bought at Hallmark a few months ago (they were 75% off). The bookends are of the entrance to the Gryffindor common room. The left one shows Harry climbing into the Fat Lady's portrait, and the rightr one shows Hermione half-emerged into the Gryffindor common room and Ron on a red chair, looking wiped out. It is cool because it looks like they are climbing through the books! Anyway, back onto subject here, teehee! When I first got the OotP, I took the cover off so I wouldn't rip it and crease it up like I had done with my first four books before I bought the set. Everytime I have read it since, I have taken it off and put it where the books used to be, by the others. I never used a bookmark, since that spreads the pages, and my copy of OotP looks nearly exactly the same as the day I got it. I dust every Harry POtter thing in my room every other day too, so nothing is ever quite dusty. Well, I guess I'm done, and I guess you're tired of hearing about my obsession! :D

When I first got my copy of OOTP the first thing I did was take off the paper covering (dust-jacket).
Then I enjoyed reading it... but as I do with all of my other books I make sure my hands are clean and I keep them 'OFF' the floor... When I was finished reading it, I took a thoroughly wrung damp tissue and gently wiped the cover (the yellow on the cover has turned into dirty-yellow), after that I returned the paper cover in it's place on the book and put my book in my 'Books I've Read' drawer...
Like Marix, I treat ALL books with dignity and respect...
.....Not to mention if anything bad happened to that book my mom would kill me (it cost her 99 rials for hardback version).... :scared:
Oh yea I can explain that (points up to previous post)... I wasn't sure if my message would show...

All of my HP books are looking pretty bad. PoA is by far the worst...the dustjacket is all wrinkled and the edges are torn. OotP definitely comes in second, with many wrinkles starting and the spine pretty well broken in. Like others have said, I don't treat my books as if they were collector's items. I like them to feel comfortable...which cannot happen if they are all perfect.

I have my OotP book on a special shelf with all the other HP books. I don't let anyone touch them or even come close to them! My mom want to read them because I keep telling her too, but every time she wants to I tell her that she CAN'T dog ear the pages or I'll make her buy another. She CAN'T take it into the Bathroom so she can read it. She CAN'T put it down without rubbing her hand over the surface that she was going to put it upon just to make sure that I doesn't get wet or anything like that. She CAN'T take it any where, where it is out of my sight. She CAN'T Damage it in any way! She CAN'T Bend the cover or any of the pages. She CAN'T put it down anywhere where someone can get a hold of it. She CAN'T spill anything on it and can't bring a drink anywhere near it. She has to have it close to her chest when walking to a place with it. She can NEVER leave it in the car. She can't take it to work with her. ETC. So, she just says..forget it. I tell her fine, why don't you just go and rent one from the Library? I'm really over Protective of my HP stuff! Well actually, I don't think I'm protective enough. :)

I am very protective of my HP books. When not in use, they stay on my bookshelf. Whenever my sister is reading one, I tend to say "Did you wash your hands?", and I am often found inspecting the pages and covers for stains, bends... anything. I don't read them with their covers on either.
As for my OotP, it's getting slightly frayed/fuzzy on the edges of the cover (the plain cover, not the illustrated one) from holding it up for long periods of time. Oh well.

Within the first two weeks of its purchase I think it had been read by at least 6 different people at least 8 different times... So, needless to say it is in pretty rough shape... I am waiting to get a full set of seven to treasure always and treat nicely... But, you can't treat books with too much reverence... After long years of use and care, a book should smell like thought... It can't get that way if you don't love it...

How do you treat your OotP Book?
interesting question.......I treat my OotP book like it had it's own life. It's sitting neatly on top of my Gryffindor scarf. I never let anyone else read the specific copy. My brother asked to read it, and i told him to never ask such a dumb question again!

It's my bible. :rotfl: When I handle it I can't help but think of the way Indiana Jones picks up and examines a sacred document. Whenever I am looking for a certain passage I always laugh to myself because I feel like I am referring to the book of books. :rotfl: I love my OotP and someday when I have my own house they are going in a bookshelf with glass doors. I'd love to have the collector's edition but I currently cannot afford it. Are there collector's editions for all the books? I have only seen them for CoS and OotP...

I love my HP books lots and lots, but I don't mind particularly how shabby they get, because I often take them to bed with me and sleep with them. Anyone who's tried that will know that it's not exactly the best treatment. ;)
As a matter of fact, they're not really in bad shape, but there are a few dogeared pages that weren't there when I bought them.

My books are not in the best condition, SS is filled with little notes my dad took while reading it(thank god he didn't even finish the first one) and the cover is sort of messed up, and when GoF came out I had a new puppy who decided to chew the corners off it, Cos and PoA are actually in ner perfect condition, but the rest have odd smudges and stuff spilt on them. But as long as the words are there I say there fine.

Does anyone else underline things, or jot down little notes in their HP books? I find myself doing this more and more since joing mugglenet and reading so many threads!
Oh no!!! I definately don't write them inside the books but i always have a notepad and pencil near me when i'm reading. My Harry Potter books are kept separately from all my other books, which are currently on my bookshelf. The Hp books, have teir own special compartment in my desk. When i read the hardbacks, i always take the jackets off, just so i can avoid accidently bending them.

Now please don't tell me off all of you people who treat your books with such reverence..!
My OotP is erm a little well-used. The dust cover is at the bottom of a drawer somewhere becuase I didn't want to rip it. The spine is broken in comfortably and the pages are, as with all my books, dogeared. It tends to live on the bedside table or on the floor next to it with the rest of the series because they are my favourite need-to-read-a-few-pages-to-fall-asleep books but is also well travelled as I often take it to work to read on the train journey. I've just bought the paperback as it will be lighter to transport (I have both for GoF as well).
They are in better condition however than my first copy of Philosopher's Stone which I had to replace as I dropped it in the bath and went all wrinkly as it dried (it does however smell appealingly of Lush bubble bath!)
I do respect, honour and love them I promise! I just use them a lot!
I don't write in them though. I hate it when people do that (probably because I am a librarian, though not as draconian as Madam Pince! If it is your own book fine but NEVER DO IT TO SOMEONE ELSE'S!
Are there collector's editions for all the books? I have only seen them for CoS and OotP...
I don't know where you are Call me Tonks but I think the PoA collectors edition is out in the UK. I might be wrong about what I think the collectors edition is though.

Oh, wow. I'm so glad that you started this thread. Now I can just smile smugly when someone makes fun of my Harry Potter collection/obsession. Thanks. As an introductory note, I'm careful with all of my books. Maybe it's only-child syndrome; maybe it's why I'm going to library grad school next year . . . who knows . . . But I do eat while reading them.
I have the hardback copies of the american editions. They have their dustjackets on. I work in a library, so I brought them in and put on the plastic jacket protectors which keeps them lovely and snug. The british versions I have in paperback (now you're seeing why people snicker when they see the HP shelf of books). Those, also, I'm careful with--no bent down edges or anything. These all sit on a shelf with some HP knicknacks, the audio books (which I am VERY obsessive about--the things are worth their weight in gold!), and copies of PS/SS in a number of languages (whenever a friend asks what to bring back from a trip/study away/etc., I say a copy of HP, so I've got some good ones).
Sadly, the glue binding my OotP broke aftet just one reading, so after much cursing and soul searching, I am bringing it in to work and having them fix it at book repair. Until then, I have checked out the library's copy so as not to do further damage.

I'd like to say that I'm careful with all my books as well... now. I used to not care so much; wear and tear made them look old and well-read so no one would ask if I'd read the book. Now I care a lot... I don't want OotP to nearly fall apart like my PoA and GoF copies. When reading it I eat, but only with one hand and I flip pages with the other. Often I have water by the book. I only drink the water when I set the book on the other side of my bed. When I'm not reading it the book sits on a shelf, even when I'm just done reading it for the day...
My brother reads the book too. He never eats when he reads, so that's no problem. But I make him wash his hands every time before he picks up the book. I never let anyone borrow it, and I never take it to school. It rarely comes out of the house unless its on long trips (say, driving from where I live to Washington, D.C.... 12 hours of sitting in a bus. X.x).

I got both an adult first edition and the children's first edition, both English. I have not touched the children's copy, and my adult copy is in pretty good condition. Since seeing the absurd prices some of the first editions reach, I have been very careful with these books.

I try to be careful with all my books, but somehow they get smudges on them. And I'm saddend to admit that I spilt some orange juice on an OOTP page. I almost cried. Them wiped it off and realized no damage was done. *wipes brow*

I don't take any special care of my Harry Potter books. Or in that case, any of my books. I just keep the stack of them on my desk. But, I do have this weird thing where I don't crease my pages to hold my place (in my own books.) Books that don't belong to me, on the other hand, have creases all over.

I'm actually very protective of all my HP books. I'm just so afraid someone will ruin that beautiful piece of art, forcing me to buy another as a just replacement. And mind you, books are rather expensive when they get to be several hundred pages long! So I keep mine in my room at almost all times and make borrowers swear to treat it with the same upmost care as I do.

I treat all of my Harry Potter books the same. When I read them I take off the covers so that they stay in good shape. All the edges of the covers of my books are all rough and worn away from when I hold the books and my hands sweat (ewwww). Anyways, I keep them next to my computer on a bookshelf and admire them. I take good care of them but they are my take them everywhere, (doctors, camping, school, vacations) but they are just for reading. Once all the books come out thought I want the collectors series type of thing, leather bound, gold edged pages, etc. Those will stay in a case of course though. I saw one of them at a bookstore for like 70 something dollars. Ouch! I will defiently need to get a job first. I also heard something that Jo was going to do a revised edition of the books to correct any mistakes that slipped by. Anyone else hear something like this?

I have two sets (and possibly a third on its way) ensuring that I have a set at home, a set in my other home (where I stay when Im at uni), and a final set to be left in prestine condition. The first set is getting pretyt battered. My GoF book has lost its hardback bit but the OotP is standing up pretty well. My set in my uni home is in excellent condition given Ive only read that set once

My dad decided to use it as a coaster the day after I finished reading it, so there's a light-colored ring on the front cover of it. I'm still angry about that.
My other books have suffered a worse fate. I'm not sure where PS is, my Cos is in pieces (kept fondly because it was the first of the series I read), and my Prisoner of Azkaban is well... it has four spine cracks, stains on it from god knows what, and the cloth used to keep the spine intact is faded. I just checked now a realised it's a first edition (is that deserving of capital punishment among book collectors? :p ). My Goblet of Fire actually has pages missing. At least I have them, though
I plan to buy the series in a box set when it's over, so I'm not too worried about it.

For the Order of the Pheonix, I tried not to crease the spine. It was so precious to me! But after a while, like with the rest of the books, you don't care anymore because it's like, a part of you. So, when the spine starts getting lines, it doesn't matter because you still love it no mater what. Of course, I don't doggy ear my books. I use a bookmark or I remember the page number. Most of my books have little lines on the spine because I have read them so many times. Especially my GoF book. But even if they are a bit, messed up, you can't help loving them! They are my life.

I read it when I'm sooo bored (as I am a lot in this vacation), but it's also infront of all my HP books in my closet, I have all the little books in Dutch the whole series and in English. I treat all my books good!
My friends use to ask me if I ever read them because they still looks so new...same as me, only a few books are with the spine broke, two of them because I was trying to do a audio story for them, and three because my friend gave them to me to read and he just didn’t want them back. I actually hate breaking the spines of books if that sounds weird. It only happens on accident if they are broken. Edit: not just the harry potter books but all books.

You guys are making me feel bad about the way I treat my HP books! I lost the dust cover to OotP ages ago (it may be under my bed but I'm too scared to look) and just about every page has chocolate fingerprints and cake crumbs in the spine cause I always eat while I read. I never, ever fold down pages to mark my place though, my HP books are the only books to have this privilage I even went out and brought special bookmarks for each of my HP books.

Well I treat my copy as anyother book, I think that if they have some stains on it or things like that is better because it shows that I have read it several times and that I like it. This doesn´t mean I go spilling water over it for no reason, but accidents happen .
The one thig I do to keep it nice is take the cover when I read it. I live in Argentina and here we don´t have hardcovers, but I bought the American version and I love the cover so I try to take as much care of it as I can.

My three copies (hardback, Spanish, and limited 5000 paperback) are on my book shelf.
My hardback was shipped to me all crammed in a box, so it's a little bent, but they are all in great shape.
The limited 5000 paperback needs to be kept safe, dry, and free from extensive use, but I'm not going to be sharing that copy, so it's okay.

My copy lies on my bookshelf and is in a very good condition. For some strange reason I want my books to look as if nobody had ever read them (no dog-ears, no stains etc.) even if I've read them a thousand times
Aquaria
January 5th, 2005, 12:24 pm
I'm the complete opposite to Laleith.
I DO love my HP books. But I show my love by taking htem with me wherever I go, while reading them. I always take a big bag to work just to be able to take whichever book I'm reading.
Thus, it happens that my books get dog-ears, stains, wrinkled backs, folds trom putting things on top of them to keep them open...
I'd actually prefer them to look like new, but I value the story much more than the book. If it looks old and worn, it just shows, that it has been read a couple of times and I didn't want to put it down, whatever I'd been doing.
They DO have a special place in my bookshelf, where I can reach them really easily.

the first thing i do when i get a harry potter book is get my mom to wrap it in plastic! that way the jacket wont come off and at the same time it stays clean and uncrumpled. a little OC but it does the job. also, i have some ground rules about my hp's. some are: they CANNOT be placed on the floor. ever. also, no dogears and i dont use bookmarks on them, cuz they make a small crease. i also dont lend them to anyone (except once i lent out my CoS cuz it was my 1st one and i ddnt know its value yet, and the 5th one to my friend for 13 yrs and i trust her). i did something stupid once though. i took a bath with my GoF. nothing bad happened to it, thank God, but thats the last time im carrying a hardbound book into the shower. my arm nearly fell off.
