Fatal Signs

By Jen

.....And here we have six missing death eaters... three dead in my service... one too cowardly to return, he will pay.... one who I believe has left me forever... he will be killed of course.........

"Severus," said Dumbledore, turning to Snape. "You know what I must ask you to do. If you are ready... if you are prepared."
"I am," said Snape. He looked slightly paler than usual and his cold black eyes glittered strangely.
"Then good luck," said Dumbledore and he watched with a trace of apprehension on his face as Snape swept wordlessly after Sirius

.... He stood outside the grounds of Hogwarts. The cold grey skyline hid behind the school and merged perfectly with the brickwork. The path to the main entrance left paw prints of a gigantic black dog that had taken the route just minutes before.

Severus rolled up the left sleeve of his robes and glanced at the black Morsmordre mark apprehensively, knowing that he could meet anything when he left.

Taking a steadying breath, he pulled out his wand and tried to clear his mind of emotion. He wasn't going to give into his occlumency skills without a fight. Then, raising his right hand, he placed his forefinger over the burning mark and with a swish of his jet black cloak, apparated into the unknown.......

..... Anger was clearly present in the tense atmosphere when Severus dared to open his eyes and look around. He found himself in a deserted grave yard, rain pelting down from the darkening sky in forceful bullets of freezing liquid.

"Decided to join us, did you?" Asked a silky voice from being him, making Snape spin round quickly. "We had almost reached the conclusion that you weren't going to turn up."

"My Lord," Snape forced himself into a bow and lowered his eye gaze. "My deepest apologies."

Anger flickered dangerously in Voldemort's red eyes and smashed tomb stones around him showed all too plainly that he had taken out his anger of Harry getting away extremely forcefully. So much so, that Wormtail sat quivering behind a cracked gravestone, chancing sneaking looks with his beady, rat like eyes when ever he thought it were safe. No one else was around, the other death eaters had been sent back home in a whirl of rage from their master.

The image of a fully returned Voldemort tried to stir fear inside of Snape but he would not allow it to affect him. He had long perfected Occlumency and would not allow weakness. He could not afford it.

- ....Those who wear their hearts proudly on their sleeves, who cannot control their emotions, who wallow in sad memories and allow themselves to be provoked so easily - weak people in other words, - they stand no chance against his powers..... -

"Hard getting away, I suppose," Voldemort stretched his elongated fingers over his jaw, never letting his gaze leave Snape, his penetrating glare judging everything that his death eater said. "When disarray, no doubt, is filtering through the school," here he paused, seemingly relishing in the thought. "And now.... death on the cards..."

An odd jolt shot through Snape's stomach and he was suddenly angry with himself for letting his guard drop. Voldemort laughed softly, an unpleasant glint in his eye. "I was talking about that student, Severus," his mouth curled. "Who on earth did you think I was referring to?"

"Crouch," he replied quickly, hoping this new piece of information would detour his interests in provoking him. "Barty Crouch."

Voldemort's cadaverous face disfigured into abhorrence and his right hand clenched into a fist. "Dumbledore," he cursed under his breath.

"A dementor," Snape corrected. "Crouch tried to kill Potter, Dumbledore stunned him and then, on Fudge's orders, a dementor performed the kiss. There was nothing I could have done to prevent it."

A silence fell between the two of them and Wormtail dared to step out into the open. "My Lord...." he stammered.

"Silence!" He snapped, catching a fly in his spider like fingers, Voldemort eyed it in disinterest, before killing the creature by closing his thumb and index finger upon the insect. "Our fiduciary has been wavering Severus," he continued slowly. "My faith in you deserves questioning... possessing individuals allows a certain privilege, that, unbeknown to the other, I can listen to the person's conversations. What a surprise was I to find, therefore, when possessing Quirrell, I hear you giving him warnings, threatening mannerisms too Severus," Voldemort caught Snape's dark, unblinking eyes and his own narrowed; "Physically stopping him getting passed that three headed dog and thus physically fighting for Albus Dumbledore, explain!"

Snape showed no emotion in his tone and spoke matter of factly. "You must realise, my Lord, that I did not know that you were using Quirrell as an aid. I, myself, was trying to protect the stone from him to make way for you when I heard of your where abouts."

Pretending to be momentarily satisfied by this explanation, his red eyes glinted in effulgence. "Working along side that old muggle loving fool cannot be easy, I understand. Albus Dumbledore's influence us no doubt powerful, but not for much longer, if everything goes to plan... and it will, one way or another. And I will allow no one to get in the way of that, do we understand one another?"

"Perfectly," he replied curtly. "It might also interest you to know that Fudge does not believe you have returned, he has christened Potter insane."

Riddle let out a croaked and crooked laugh. "Well that is no surprise. Cornelius never could see an inch infront of his nose. And Lucius will keep things running smooth at the ministry. Their guards down may prove a useful asset, now we can begin planning."

Wormtail nodded in a burst of enthusiasm. "And regain the dementors and giants as you suggested my Lord."

Voldemort cut an exasperated glance at Pettigrew who bit his tongue. Riddle was not fool enough to divulge into the details of his plans with Severus yet. He still marginally believed Snape's loyalty to be feigned.

"I will send notification of when I need to see you next, Severus," Voldemort added in a tone that was hard to read. "In the usual way. In the meantime, keep an eye on Potter until the end of term, I trust he arrived back in one piece."

"Unfortunately," Snape replied and Riddle was pleased to hear the true note of loathing in his voice.

He flexed his finger knuckles. "He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day," he glanced at Snape's sallow face. "Though some are not so lucky, are they? And some who fight, fall. That filthy mudblood for instance, Lily Potter..."

Something flickered across Severus' expression but it was so fast and well controlled that it could have merely been a slight shiver against the cold.

But Riddle knew better.

"Until we meet again then, but, before you go," Riddle stood up straight. "Where's Karkaroff?"

- "....Then flee, I will make your excuses..." -

"I have not seen him since the incident when Crouch attacked Krum," Snape lied smoothly and it was impossible to know that what he was saying was not the complete truth.

"Then you may leave," he replied shortly. "Go."

Bowing a final time, Snape disapparated and the eerie smile Voldemort had placed across his face slipped quickly into a smirk and he turned back to Nagini who had coiled around a half shattered statue of an angel. "What shall we do with our slippery Snape?" He fingered the snake under the chin and she hissed with pleasure. "Wormtail," the man flinched slightly. "Didn't you mention a certain attention of Snape's about that mudblood Lily Evans whilst they were at school?"

"I d-did in-d-deed my Lord," he replied, stuttering a little in his enthusiasm for revealing information. "She attempted to stop Black and Potter bullying him. If it were not for Avery and Bellatrix in his company and the fact Lily was muggle born I believe he would have pursued it."

"I thought as much," he fingered his wand lightly. "Ever since it was voiced I was after the Potters he seemed to have faltered. Dumbledore will have taken advantage."

"You said b..before that one had left you forever," Wormtail breathed.

Voldemort's slit for a mouth set in a grim line. "I did indeed Wormtail, indeed. But we can perhaps feed the 'double crossing double crosser' false information, mislead them all, yes," he paused. "And in the mean time we can find and punish Karkaroff, thinking he can get away so easily. Then begin to persuade the dementors to rejoin as our allies and we can set about destroying Potters comfy little home, they can toy with the muggles he lives with. I believe Petunia will remember the old ways, she won't want any dark magic on her doorstep... and of course any family of his must be removed," a malicious smiled spread across his triangular face. "As well as that pathetic Godfather of his - the world thinks he is my loyal servant," he snorted, "If it wasn't a pain to Black I'd announce the fault publicly. But, no matter, he shall meet the same end as his brother."

"And Snape?" Wormtail's eyes widened, eager to know.

"You remember what I said about the person I feared had left me forever," this made Pettigrew gulp. "We will play him to our advantage and then, when he is of no more use, mark my words," Voldemort's eyes flashed menacingly. "He will be permanently disposed of."
