View Full Version : Which character should have an expanded role?

I was wondering about who my favorite character was and all, and I started to think which minor character from all who have been mentioned or appeared in one of the books should be more explored, or that I'd be interested in finding out more things about. I've definately decided I really like Viktor Krum, and maybe more of him could be said you know? 'coz he's super famous and everything, maybe he could help Harry in some sort of way, well I don't know. Although Harry's dealing quite well on his own. But which one would you guys like to know more about?

Hmm I'd like a book explaining many of the characters backgorunds like Snape and Lucius Malfow. I know theres a book on the creatures from Harry Potter, but on eon some of the characters would be interesting aswell. I'd like to see more on the marauders, Snape and Lucius.

I'd like to see a prequel to the series with more detail about the first war and the first Order of the Phoenix's fight against it. I'd also like to see more information about the various characters such as Mr. and Mrs. Granger (and how they reacted when Hermione got her letter), more about Neville and his parents, etc, etc. There's so much more to know!

I'd love to learn more about almost everyone. I'm especially desperate to learn more about Lily and James (although their roles can't technically be "expanded" because, well, they're dead, we could still find out more about them), Petunia, the Evanses and the Potters. Likewise, a more in-depth analysis into Snape's past would be really, really interesting.

Lupin needs a bigger role, desperately. In OOTP he couldn't do much other than be thoroughly nice. But he's bound to have a bigger role now he's the last of James's true schoolfriends. It will be good to see Tonks and Luna get really consequential roles (if they do) and to find out more about pretty much everyone.

Of course I would find very interesting to read about early life of Harry's parents, instead among living characters I would like to read about Snape's secret tasks.

I hope Tonks and Luna weren't put into book just to fill the background.

I'd love to find out more about Neville's parents and Snape's past.

And I hope Lupin will have bigger part in next books.

O, and please, put Krum back!

This is going to sound a bit off the wall, but I'd like to see a lot more of Nearly Headless Nick. His brief scene at the end of OotP was so poignant, and I'm dying to find out more about what he did in life (I would love to know what part wizards had in one of the most intriguing eras in British history) and how he died. Unfortunately, I don't think this will fall within the scope of the coming books, but I can hope.

And Lupin, like everybody else said.

I hope Tonks and Luna weren't put into book just to fill the background.

I don't know about Tonks, but Luna seems to have a large role with her debu in book 5. She seems to have a part in helping Harry reach his destination.

Needless to say, I want to know more about Luna. She seems to be an interesting character.

I would really love to learn more about the more powerful female characters, like Neville's grandmother and also, Amelia Susan Bones, Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement (Madam Bones was amongst the people who interrogated Harry in the Wizengamot hearing). In the series before OotP, only Professor McGonagall seemed to be leading the strong representative of wise and mature female characters.

And I would really love for the giant squid residing in the lake to have more importance in the final battle ;)

December 3rd, 2003, 8:21 pm
He had more speaking lines than ever before. He was a part of the DA. And since JK doesn't do that sort of thing for no reason, I think that means he's becoming more of an important character.

I wish Draco would have a more expansive role in the books. He seems to be the epitome of a one-dimensional baddie. I know it's kind of hard to get some development on him, considering that the books are through Harry's perspective, but some background info on him would be nice. We're used to hearing what he says, but I'd like to know what really goes on in Draco's crazy mind, like when he's interacting with his father and such. A nice scenerio would be Harry eavesdropping by *mistake* on a serious conversation with Draco and his father/mother wherein we get a direct view of Draco's reactions, expressions, etc. Or perhaps Harry could find a personal note written by Draco that was carelessly dropped on the floor?

I would love to find out a lot more about Mr. and Mrs. Granger. It seems odd that we hardly ever hear about them even though they are Hermione's parents. I think the only things we really know about them is that they are muggles and dentists. They might have some very interesting secrets behind them.

I'm also interested in Kingsley Shacklebolt for some reason. He seems cool, and he's got a deep voice like Brad Garrett from Everbody Loves Raymond.

I would like to know more about that too. For some reason, I seem to imagine the Bloody Baron as an Executioner. Perhaps he is even the one who executed Nearly Headless Nick. There has definately got to be a bigger story line for all the ghosts, including the elusive Grey Lady.

I would also like to know more about the Dursleys (not so much Vernon) and Piers Polkiss - so far he has had such a miniscule insignificant role in all the books, yet JKR found it necessary to describe him in quite a bit of detail - 'Piers was a scrawny boy with a face like a rat. He was usually the one who held people's arms behind their backs while Dudley hit them'. Doesn't that sound a bit like Peter Pettigrew? ???

1. I'd like to know about Harry's grandparents bc we don't have any concrete proof that they're dead.

2. Lily and her family and friends

3. Petunia and her ties to the magical world

4.Snapes life, what happened?

5.Aberforthe

6. Neville's grandad. How'd he die

7. Luna Lovegoode

8. Ginny Weasley

9. THe "fabulous" Black sisters as everyone refers them to. I find it intrigueing that 2 were involved with Deatheaters and one married a muggle

10 Dorcas Meadows. Why was she murdered by Voldemort? There must be more to her death. She's the only other person in the order murdered by Voldemort himself.

I'd love to see more of a lot of the characters, but I guess you mean which minor characters we'd like to see become major ones?

In that case, I'd love to hear from Griselda Marshbanks and Tiberius Ogden, and any of those who supported Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix from the start, though not being members themselves. Neville's gran, too. And I liked Professor Tofty, one of the examiners, but I doubt we'll see him again.

I agree. I think we should find out a lot more about Draco and his relationship with his father Lucius. I don't know if this was just a film thing or whether it was covered in the book also, but in CoS when Harry meets Draco in the bookshop and Lucius comes up behind Draco, to me, Draco seemed a bit weary of his father. Perhaps in later books, Draco could turn against his father and be an important asset in the defeat of Voldie!

so, as it appears, any possible minor character has already been suggested (shame on me, some of the names were wholly unfamiliar to me!).
Out of those suggestions, I'd pick

- the Bloody Baron becaue there seems to be some mystery covered in him (being the only one with influence on Peeves, why is he blood stained etc).

- Luna to be brutally honest, I don't care about her at all, but I'd like to see more about living in other houses than Gryffindor. I have absolutely no interest in Ernie McMillian, sorry cleansweep11!, but some Hufflepuff must do the job, so my suggestion would be Hannah Abbot to see some bits of Hufflepuff life.

- Bellatrix and McGonagall it might seem strange to put them here together, but someone above demanded for more important female characters, and those two are awesome. You can think about Bellatrix whatever you like to, but apart from moral objections, that lady rocked. I liked her independence (not allowing Lucius to hush her up etc), even if she is clearly insane. McGonagall doesn't need further recommendations, does she?

- Narcissa Malfoy, as above; I hope she'll be a strong character. And I'm terribly curious for her.

- Phineas Nigellus I found him hysterically funny; even if it was for mere comic relief, I want to see more of him.

- Draco and/or Lucius I know it won't happen, but I'd love to see more about the bad guys; I want to know about Lucius' and Snape's friendship, about living in the dungeons with Snape as head of house, I'd die to see glimpses of Malfoy Manor, and so on.

But if I had to place my bets, I'd say only Luna, Narcissa and the Bloody Baron (yes! because of the Peeves connection) are realistic, what a shame.

Grawp, Luna and Lupin are definitely going to get more development in the next books, i think.

That's why I would choose Norbert, Crookshanks and Buckbeak. Each of these creatures have played important roles in the stories so far, but only within one volume. I'd like to see them play a bigger role later on, and get developed more. I have a soft spot for dragons, so I guess developing Norbert would be my first choice, and that probably means we'll get to hear more from Charlie Weasley. I wouldn't mind, but I'd rather learn more about the dragons and other creatures.

Although JKR already has her in a featured chapter. I bet she'll just be around for Harry like Hermione is around for Harry.

[FONT=Garamond][B]I love the development of Ginny so far, I think she's going to really break out in the next books as a strong female character - she's getting feisty! But she's still in a secondary-side-kick sort of role ... there was more of her in OotP, but I'd like to see her take on some individual importance, rather than just be part of the crowd.

I really like Lupin too, there's something very wise about him. When he was the DADA prof, i always wished he and harry had met more often. yes, he spent time teaching harry about defense against dementors, but given that harry was his best friends son, i wish they could have connected more personally ... share stories about james and all.

Of course, I'm dying to learn more about Lily Potter. And I'd generally like to see more of the Gryffindors - Parvati and Dean in particular - i think they could be built into cool characters.

:agree: Maybe they met them, but I can't remember. They were in Flourish and Blott's in the CoS Movie though... Come to think of it, do we even know their first names?
Mr. and Mrs. Granger is in the CoS book too. Mr. Weasley gets very excited about meeting muggles, and goes on and on about them having tea together. I don't know if they actually have it though. They're also present during the brawl in Flourish and Blott's if I'm not mistaken.
About their names, I don't know. I don't think they've been mentioned, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Personally, I'd like to see Lupin and Tonks again. Actually I think we will see both of them, Lupin can't just get kicked out of the series now, and if JKR introduces a metamorphmagus she has to use her, which JKR hasn't done yet.

I'd also like to know what will come of Umbridge. I don't necessarily care about Harry meeting her face to face, but it'd be interesting to have Mr. Weasley bring some news about her being kicked out of her office or something of the sort.

Finally, I'd like to meet the whole Weasley family (except maybe Percy - or at least I wouldn't want to meet a Fudge-following Percy again - if he starts agreeing with the Order I suppose it's Ok).

There can only be one answer for me: Lupin. Sigh.
He's been my favourite character since his first appearence in PofA, and I've loved him to bits ever since. It was great to see more of him in OOTP, but I don't think we got enough of his reaction to Sirius' death. He's so subtle and so interesting that I'm sure JKR can develop him much further.

I would like to see more of Tonks. I like her character...*thinking deeply*...and I think we've got some things in common. And Charlie, because of his work. Basically, I would miss any character in the future two books, also the black ones.

Hello I'm new :-)
I also think Tonks should have a bigger role. As Sirius' only non- evil living relative (is Her mum dead, if not why's she not in the order) I think she could take on a big sisterly role. Also she's an Auror, the job Harry wants, she could tell him all about it.

I've been asking myself the same question about Tonks's mother, Andromeda. I posted it in the Black Family thread in History of Magic.

More of:

Ginny (who all but disappeared until book 5)

Less of:
Prof. Lockhart (I know its too late)
Prof. Trelawney (also too late)
Cho Chang (who should have disappeared)

Luna Lovegood to the rescue! Or not... But anyway, she's one of my favourite characters at the moment, because she's different and she's not one to conform. I hope to learn more about her troubled past in the next two books, and perhaps a relationship will blossom between her and Harry?

I think Luna would be a great match for Harry... They're both different and will never be completely accepted by their peers, and I think that what Harry needs right now is someone he can relate to. Cho was a bit nutty, Ginny is a possible choice, but Luna is something I really hope to see worked out in the future. If not a romance, then a friendship would be good.

There's loads of characters I'd like to see more of. Professor Flitwick, Dumbledore's brother Aberforth and Phineas Nigellus are at the top of my list at the moment. I'd also like to see Luna's father, Charlie Weasley and (for some reason that I can't even explain to myself, let alone anybody else) Millicent Bulstrode. I'm sure there are more that I can't think of right now.

well Lupin is my first choice as I have turned into quite a fangirl over him
as my sn implies, I'd alos love to learn more about Luna for all the obvious reasons. And also as my namesake may imply, Anthony Goldstein. I know he was given a passing mention as a Ravenclaw prefect but I'm curious about him simply because it'd be cool to see the intersection of "the jewish world" with the wizarding.

Tonks, definetly. I'm quite confident that her character will become quite important, especially in her backstory. I'm curious now if she will change her last name to Black now, so her mother's late cousin wouldn't be the last of the Blacks anymore.

I was annoyed by Cho in the 5th book, but even though a Harry/Cho ship didnt work out, I do wonder if her character will have any more signifigance in the last 2 books. She was so one-dimensional for the longest time, I wonder if JKR will give her any more dimensions.

Of course I'd love to see a lot more of Lupin - I've got a soft spot - but apart from him,

- Gilderoy Lockhart - I don't care if he's lost his mind, as long as he's still got his looks! :D
- Prof. Snape, of course - I desperately want to find out about his past.
- Mundungus Fletcher - he's just great!
- Bill Weasley - can you get any cooler!
- Darling Neville, of course.
- Ludo Bagman - what a guy, and what a beater! :D
- Percy - regardless of all the stupid things he says/does, I still love him!

And I wouldn't be particularly devastated if we never again hear from...

- Luna Lovegood - oh, she gets on my nerves sometimes! I know lots of people really like her, but she's just sooo... irritatingly off with the fairies.
- Umbridge
- Fudge

I am intersted in learning more abuot Dean. I have no idea why. I guess it's really JKR's fault because she mentioned his backround on her site. I want to know if he'll ever find out about his father and how he'll react. Also, as many have said, Lupin. And am dying to hear about the days of the Mauduers. It seems like they are destined to be doomed. I feel so sorry for Lupin! 2 of his best friends dead, and one ws a trator! I hope this isn't some weird foreshadowing of Lupins death! That would not make me happy. And I want to see some more of Peeves! he's so funny!

Well, first and foremost I would like to see a lot more of Luna, as I believe she's one of the main staples of inter-house union. Plus she's such a great character...

I'd also like to see Snape, and learn more about him. I really don't like him, but I want to see if he finally has a change of heart.

Also I want one of those rarely-mentioned characters to become more important e.g. Katie Bell or Michael Corner. Anytime you introduce another character to be significant in the plots is all fine with me.

Without question I want to see Lupin's role expanded in the books. His character is tragic yet strong and I would love to see some heroics on his part. He is essentially Harry's father figure now and I would love to see their relationship grow. I think JKR could evoke some very strong emotion from the readers by involving Lupin more in the plot.

I am also eager to see some flashbacks of Lily and James. Their presense in the books is so mysterious and I know there is so much more to be learned about them.

I would love to see more expanded on of Ginny, she has already matured as a character, and will continue to do so, I believe. Also Krum is too good of a character to some of the subplots to just be ousted after one or two appearances.

Definately Lupin, because he is my favorite character, and because he is next in line to be a paternal figure for Harry. I'd also love to read about Lupin's past, both at Hogwarts and after he graduated.

Well, if I had it my way, I'd want every character to have an extended role hehe. But, if I had to choose just one, it would probably be Dean Thomas. Ever since I found out about his background and not to mention him going out with Ginny Weasley, he's been intriguing me.

For me, Neville. I feel that he should have a more expanded role. Ever since I read book 1, I figured that Neville would play more of a role than what he did, but, unfortunately, he didn't.

Book 5 came around, and he actually got a bit of "text-time" and I really enjoyed that. If JK keeps doing what she's doing in ref to Neville's character, I'll be one happy fan.

Another character I'd like to know more about is Luna. She's a strange girl, but what is her significance? Why was she introduced into the story? What help will she bring to Harry and the others? Is it foreshadowing all of the houses coming together? (Okay, farfetched, I know ^^)

Snape is another one. Too many fans (myself included) of the series have way too many questions in regards to Snape from, "Why does Dumbledore trust him" to "Is he a spy for the Order or Voldemort?"

Last, but not least, the eldest Weasley siblings (Bill and Charlie). I just would personally like to know more about them, actually. ^^

Edit: I never thought of them, but yeah. Whoever said Dean, Seamus, Lavendar, and Parvati. It would be nice to know more about them. If we're lucky, maybe JK will use them for the last two books with this war coming and all. All of them are with Harry (even though it took Seamus a while to come around to this in OotP).

I would like to see more from Luna Lovegood. There is more to her than meets the eye. I also like the way she is so different from the other students.

And, the Bloody Baron might be a character to expand on too. All we really know about him is he is scary and Peeves is afraid of him.

I would be interested to know more about the members of the Ministry for Magic. Is there a magical police force? If yes, how does it operate?

Madam Pomfrey needs to do more than bustle about in the hospital wing. I would like to see her giving magical first aid classes.

Well as much as I would like separte volumes of each character in teh HP world (you know Hermione Granger and the Goblet of Fire) hear everything from there POV, I cant have that so I suppose I'd like to see more Mauraders or Ginny Weasley. That little taste of Mauraders we had in the Pensive isnt enough! :upset:

I'd say Luna, but I'm sure she's going there anyways, so I'll say Lupin (of course) and Dean Thomas, who I've always really liked, no matter how little of him we actually see.

Also: any Slytherin. Any! So long as they're not cowardly, stupid, or pure evil. There must be some, there must.

(I'm also rather interested in the two at-this-moment-going-into-sixth-year girls in Gryffindor. There are 5 girls and 5 boys in each year in each house (there's mathematical proof of this in the books, which I swear I will get for anyone who asks). Well, we know Hermione, Lavender, and Parvati. Who are the other two and why on earth hasn't Harry mentioned them? (although there are certain people who's names I really should know, having held long, detailed, in depth conversations with them in biology class, but don't. And I suppose Harry could just not be very impacted by these people?). Although JK also seems to think that there should be well over 1000 people in Hogwarts and I can offer even more mathematical proof as to why this cannot be true either, so maybe we should just ignore the mathematics in this school, as witches and wizards don't seem to learn it passed grade 5 anyway.)

I think that Luna, Ginny and Neville are all well on their way to having bigger roles in the series. So, I'm sure that we will learn much more about all three of them.
I would like Bill and Charlie Weasley to have expanded roles. I think both of these guys are very interesting characters. I love them and I don't even know that much about them!! We have gotten glimpses of them throughout the series, but I want more!! :rotfl:
I also hope to see more of Bellatrix, which I'm sure we will. I hope to learn more about her family life and why she is so devoted to Voldemort.
And lastly, I want to know more about Harry's grandparents. I'm not sure what all we will find out about them, but all four of them seem like they could be very interesting characters.
I would also love if we could somehow see into Draco's life more. His mother is another character that I hope we learn more about. I'm not sure how we would go about this since we see most everything through Harry's eyes. And I don't see Harry going to Malfoy Manor anytime soon although he could use his invisiblity cloak or some other way I'm sure!! ;)

I kinda wish we could just meet Hermione's parents, I'm curious about them.

As for a bigger role I'd go with McGonagall, she's always intrigued me.

And as a weirdo, I'd like to say Dudley. I find him hilarious, and I've always wanted him to have that moment where he realises how important Harry is. I know it's petty of me (on a fictional characters behalf) but all those years that he beat up on the savior of the wizarding world, and I wanted him to know that. I don't think he has any clue. Anyway, if he had a slightly bigger role, I'm sure it would be full of laughs.

I'll have to say Draco....I found him oddly lacking in OotP. Sure, he took lots of points off when he joined the inquisitorial squad, but not much else. Near the beginning, he was expected to make life truely more difficult being a prefect while Harry wasn't, but we didn't see much of him at all.

That and Seamus Finnigan....not sure why, really, just always liked his character.
