Me and my friend (ravenclawgrl) are going to PoA in costume. Ive basically decided on Trelawney, but she still doesnt know. If you guys are going in costume, what are you going as? Any costume ideas for her? (or me if you guys present a better idea :p )

Thanks in advance,
Cindy

Personally it'd be Hermione for me, but seeing as your friend is called Ravenclawgirl, I'd suggest Cho, Padma Patil, Luna, or the Grey Lady.

Or Marietta... well, maybe not. :D

Do any of you read the comic strip "Fox Trot"? Just wondering. Anyway, I will probably never see a movie in costume.

Me neither, but if I did, it would be Hermione.

Can you post a link, PadfootBlack?

Heehee...going to the cinema in costume. Great idea, but you'll never cath me doing it...

Dye a mop black, stick it on you're head, and go as Snape. It'll be a sure-fire winner

Yay! Glad we're not the only ones! My friends and I are all planning to go to the opening here in Memphis in costume. (We have an Imax screen and have our fingers crossed for the Imax version!!!) So far there are five of us girls, but our husbands are refusing to dress up...and I was all ready to put them in great Quidditch uniforms! Argh! Oh, and we're all 26-27 years old, by the way, hehe!

Our plan is to go as generic students, not main characters. We've all been sorted, but we have mostly Gryffindors, so since I'm the one who'll be putting the costumes together, I think I'll probably switch a few around to make sure we have at least one from each house.

Our problem is that we want to go with the new uniform, POA style, not the one from the first two movies...and there just aren't enough photos of the whole uniform yet to figure exactly what it is! It seems like black pants/skirts, white shirts, new ties, maybe a black jumper/cardigan, and the new robes are lined with house colors. I'm also trying to figure out what the patch is on the fronts of the new robes; it doesn't look like Harry's is the plain Gryffindor from before.

Lets see...ideas for POA characters (just the girls)...obviously the ones mentioned; the newest adult female characters are Trelawney, Madame Rosmerta, Aunt Marge (hehe)...for students there's Cho (school or Quidditch uniform), could be Hermione with a Time Turner, Pansy if you wanna be a bad girl, Lavendar and Parvati to go with Trelawney (oohing and ahhing)...or a boggart! :)

Anyway, if anyone has any advice on POA uniforms, please contact me...we can help each other out! (Or if anyone's in/near Memphis and wants to join us!)

I have a Slytherin scarf...I suppose I'll wear that. Alas, Pittsburgh has no Imax screen...

EDIT: Pittsburgh does have an IMAX screen (the Rangos Omnimax), but it is a part of the Carnegie Science Center, and most likely will not be showing HP3.

I'll probably just wear a Harry Potter T-shirt or something. I don't like costumes.

Hehe, Chicago has an IMAX screen and I only live 20 miles away from it.

I really want to go in costume, but I don't know anyone who'd go in costume with and I'd feel silly being the only on dressed up. I was thinking about going as a Hufflepuff, but the nearest school tie I've got to a hogwarts one is a blue one with yellow stripes and that is kind of like the blue and bronze colours of Ravenclaw. I don't know where I'm going to get a black robe from though.

I have a lovely medieval style dress, but it looks more LOTR than Harry Potter.

PadfootBlack
January 10th, 2004, 7:43 pm
Fox Trot has this kid in it that loves to dress up for the occasion. Bill Amend usually makes a week worth of strips with a movie theme when a big one like Harry Potter or LotR comes out. I'll attach one. It's pretty funny stuff. Watch for it at foxtrot.com in June. I'm sure he won't let us down. (It's all in good fun!!)

I'm not doing costumes for PoA...maybe for GoF, though...

Here's my plan:

Harry Potter Party:

1: Invite Sesen and Linda (my only HP lovin' friends that are also girls)

2. Force them to spend the night on June 3

3 Make Harry Potter T shirts

4. Sleep so we can stay awake all through the movie

JUNE 4

5. put on shirts

6 load up parents to go to theatre that's an hour away

7 Go and freak out a whole lotta people!

Ha Thats a really good comic. LotR's fans really are like that....then again so are some Harry Potter fans...then again so am I :) . I can get alittle territorial; especially when "fans" haven't read the books. Anyways, I might dress up for the premier. It depends on who I am going with. Unfortunately, most of my friends don't like Harry Potter, so if they do go with me, I don't plan on being the only one to dress up.

I just wanted to post this link to a great group I found this weekend. It's a Yahoo! Group: Madame Malkins, Harry Potter costuming forum.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MadameMalkins/

They have a lot of advice and many discussions on where to find costume pieces, how to make robes and more, and an ongoing discussion of the new POA style school uniforms. You have to join to post, not sure if you do to read, but it's well worth joining and reading the archives of posts to find great online stores and advice.

Many of these folks are talking about going to the movie premiere in costume, so they will be on schedule with the rest of us for getting it pulled together.

Alright Mel, since I'm an animator and you know how animators are (you're one), sure, why not. I would be happy to embarrass myself, although in Pittsburgh, this would be a normal look. Just where would I get a costume though? Diagon alley is too far for me to walk to.

Hermione. It's just easy. Or Ginny if I dye my hair red. Either way I can wear my Gryff-coloured sweater. It's just my robe I have to alter, to have the silk lining.
But being Trelawney or Luna would be fun. Even Dumbledore. In my imagination he has the most beautiful robes.

My daughter will probably be dressed as Hermione. I have made her an excellent robe, much better than store bought. She also has the tie and sweater. She almost got on tv when CoS came out. She didn't talk enough, so that is why she didn't get on. They could have done the segment better, but that is just my oppinion.

Hee-hee - I already have one - I've been accompanying my kids trick-or-treating for years dressed as the Grim Reaper. It wouldn't take much to make it into a dementor costume. I figure just use black gauze to obscure the face. My only problem is the height - I believe they are supposed to be 7 feet tall and I'm shy of that by a foot. Hmm - maybe some 'Frankenstein's monster' boots. Or black roller blades would add 3-4 inches and allow me to glide - but it's hard to be scary and imposing while flat on your can in the parking lot.

Aah, there's nothing like being able to completely embarrass your children!

We got some great 4" stacked knee-high boots for my husband to wear a few Halloweens ago. They came from Hot Topic...you may check there for clearance sales.

Rollerblades are a cool idea, too! That would be really neat to glide around...as long as your robes didn't get caught up in the wheels! :) But hey, if you fell on your behind, you could just have one of your kids yell "Riddikulus!" and pretend you're a boggart dementor! :)

I was sorted into Gryffindor, so that's why I am making that costume. But my friend is Hufflepuff and she's making hers for that house. I actually wouldn't mind doing a Ravenclaw, as blue is my fave. But I think it's good to have variety, and representation from all of the houses, so I say go for it! Us Gryffindors need to have someone to hex, anyway. ;)

I just went to the Madame Malkins message board and it seemed to work ok for me to log in and leave a message, so just keep trying. There's a lot of good information and discussion there!

Hey, my friends and I are all going in costume, and we're 26-27. One has a 6 year old and 3 year old, but they're not going with us. :) It's going to be just adults. We're also going to have a pre-party before the movie starts, and then a post-party, complete with "loaded" butterbeer, firewhiskey, and potions shots...so it's an all-adult affair. :) So although we won't have kids, there will be a lot of us. But if you can't get a group of adults to go with you, maybe a niece/nephew/cousin? Have fun!

Well I do have two cousins who do like HP and they are both actors so I don't think they'd mind dressing up. (One of them actually auditioned for the part of Tom Riddle.) The only thing is that one of them is away in Italy for six months and she's the most likely to be up for it. My only friend who I'd think would be up for it isn't well enough to go. I'm going to have to think about this a while. We usually go with my godmther and her family. I'm not sure if they would dress up or not.

Americans seem more fun when it comes to dressing up. Us Brits are **** at Halloween.

I've seriously considered dressing up in a costume for the premier of PoA.

If I were to go in a full costume, I would probably go as a generic Ravenclaw student.

But what I'll probably end up doing is wearing a Potter t-shirt and maybe use some makeup to draw a lighting bolt scar on my forehead. Oh, wait, I forgot! I already have a lightning bolt shaped scar on my forehead from an accident as a small child. Now all I'll need is a T-shirt.

I'm sure Alivan's will be making plenty of dough off of the people who are going in costumes that want to add a quality wand to their impression. What a goldmine it will be come May and June!

Hey guys--- A bunch of friends and myself decided to dress up for the PoA release. I've got everything else in the uniform covered except for the robe. I've never done this before and have no idea where to start. Here are a few questions I have that I hope someone could answer on here or owl me please...

1) What kind of fabric would you use? And for the inside colored lining?
2) Are there any patterns out there that are accurate to the PoA style robe?
3) How do you do it? I've never sewn before but my mom is going to help me :) ... any help with instructions on basically how to do this would be wonderful, I'm so excited but very nervous...

Thanks for any help

It all depends whether I can get tickets for the premier. If I succeed I'll go in costume. It will have to be something easy this time: just a cloak and a witches hat (which unlike others here - *eyeing the posting above this* I will take off during performance) :D

First of all, let me recommend a few sites:
Madame Malkins Yahoo Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MadameMalkins/) - This is a fabulous group of HP costumers. You'll have to go through the message archive to see a lot of the info, as I'm not sure they have it all in a single FAQ yet. But they've got great advice and almost all have made costumes; many make costumes from different interests. Also links to good places to buy costume pieces, photos, patterns, etc.
HP Knit Yahoo Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPKnit/) - Also an excellent group, obviously focused on knitting costume pieces (sweaters, scarfs, socks)
HP Cosplay LiveJournal (http://www.livejournal.com/community/hp_costuming/) - Another costuming group. Some info overlaps, but this seems to be a younger crowd.
HP Prop Site (http://b17.ezboard.com/fpropreplicasfrm84) - Prop replica board, also shared with Back to the Future for some reason, but has some info on making prop replicas.
POA Reference Photos (http://knit.atypically.net/other/poaref/) - Lauren is a knitter and has patterns; you can also order from her. But she also shares this great page of reference photos for all the costume pieces.
Wizard Ties (http://www.wizardties.com) - How awesome is this? These ladies have special ordered POA-style ties from a tie manufacturer and had them made to their specs. Pre-orders going on until the end of April.

Ok, now that I've shared that, here's my personal answers to the questions:

1. I am personally using gabardine. It's about $5-$6 a yard usually; I was thinking it takes about 6 yards per color, but don't quote me on that. Gabardine has enough weight to hang nicely, and it also moves nicely. It feels nice and it's not too stiff. A lot of people also seem to use just inexpensive cotton lining material, but to me it's stiffer and doesn't "flow" as well. But if you're only going to wear it a few times, it's just fine, and widely available.

Same fabric info for the lining. The new lining colors are: Gryffindor - maroon, Hufflepuff - mustard brown, Ravenclaw - navy, Slytherin - hunter green. They're all very deep, rich, dark colors this time around.

2. I don't think there are any 100% accurate robe patterns. Most people seem to use Simplicity pattern #5840. It needs a bit of modification for accuracy, like the hood and the sleeves. Robe length in the movies is pretty long; I'd look at the reference photos and then browse Madame Malkins group for specifics on robe modifications...or ask; they're very helpful.

3. I actually haven't sewn my robe yet, but from what I gather from the message boards, you basically make 2 robes; one black, one lining-colored. Then you sew the two together (sew the "wrong sides" together, leaving a small area unstitched so you can turn it "right side" out, then sew that together...like you would a pillow.) A friend of mine has made hers, and she also sewed in a pocket for her wand. She was also lucky enough to be sorted into Hufflepuff, and she made her robe black on one side, and yellow on the other...so it's reversible for a Quidditch robe and school robe. Very cool.

Hope that info helps. Be sure to check out the links, because that's where all the "pros" hang out. They are all really nice and have lots of info.

I'm probably going to go to the POA party at Navy Pier. It starts at 9pm and is a dinner/ball. Afterwards, there's going to be a midnight showing of POA at the Imax at the pier. Total cost + movie will be ~ $30 per person, dinner included.

The dinner/ball thing will be cool... probably the closest thing to a Hogwarts Yule Ball I'll ever see... :P

This is what I've got so far. I'm going to go sans-sweater because A) they don't always wear it in POA and B) Its going to be warm in June. :P and C) I can focus my efforts on making POA robes.

If you're going to ask her to make you some robes, go to Wal-Mart. In their fabrics section, they have patterns. There are 2 robe patterns they have that I know of.

If you need a POA style tie, then go to wizardties.com. That's where I got my ties. Not only did they ship them very quickly, the packaging was so cool. Inside the envelope was a hand-wrapped tissue envelope, tied with packing string with a hand-written note. Dunno, I felt all giddy... like I was opening my Hogwarts letter.

I'm going to wear one of my ties to work tomorrow... only problem is none of my shirts go with the ravenclaw tie. (Geofory Beane shirts. I have purple, grey, blue... why do they make white shirts out of 100% cotton? They're all so wrinkled!) so I may have to wear the Gryffindor one. :(

My roommate last year dressed up for the CoS premiere, and she wore our Graduation robes (they gave them to us freshman year ... there's a whole ritual here of "putting on your academic robes" as an entering freshman and then "taking them off" at commencement four years later ... but I digress!). If you know anyone who is graduating from high school or college, or had graduated, those robes work really well. They're also pretty cheap, if I recall my high school graduation robes, so you could Google 'graduation robes' and see what you come up with. Good luck :)

Thanks! Were your robes black? I graduate in a few days and my robe is white.

My high school's robes were dark blue. Our colors were blue and silver. I live in a tower. The tower happens to be on the west side of a large complex with 4 buildings. 2 towers, and 2 ground level buildings... coincidence that I'm a Ravenclaw? I think not...

My college robes were green though. Green and yellow. Very 70's color scheme... just like the rest of the school :(

One thing about graduation robes is that the material is usually very light weight. Keep that in mind...

BTW, Wizardties.com's ties are pictured in my attached pic. Both Ravenclaw and Gryf... I think my pictures do a better job than their website's. At least with the Gryf tie. They're lovely ties and well worth the $20+ s&h. (And I can finally retire the old Ravenclaw tie I had that I didn't like.)

Costumes for some movies, for example the Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings series, makes them that much more fun.
I have a black cloak with purple on the underside that has become very dear to me. I used it along with a grey sweatervest, black tie, and black skirt and shoes, a plastic wand , and round, black-framed glasses for the Order of the Phoenix party, and I used the cloak for the premiere of Return of the King.
Most actual Harry Potter things available are not sized for anyone much older than 10 or 11, so most items of my Harry Potter ensemble come from foraging ebay.
At the risk of getting ridiculed by my friends going with me to see Prisoner of Azkaban at 12:01 June 4th, I will be cutting back my outfit to just the cloak. However...when Book 6 comes out, I will be in full "Potter" garb. :p

Someday you'll be old and look back on life and either say, "I took every opportunity I got and had a fun, fulfilling life...I even dressed up to go to a Harry Potter movie one time (or more)."

Or you'll say, "Well, I didn't do as much as I really could have, but it was an ok life...at least I didn't get embarrassed at that Harry Potter movie in 2004."

Your choice, but I'm going for the fun version! :) (And by the way, I'm 27, married and don't have kids...so I can't use kids as an excuse. This is all for me! hehe)

Sounds like a great way to meet people and make new friends that share your interests to me. Don't put off doing something fun just because there is no one available to do it with at the moment!

I have a whole Hermione costume that I wore for Halloween but I'm not going to go in it. That's a little too much for me especially since my sister doesn't have a costume to match. Instead, we are both going in our Dumbledore's Army t-shirts, gryffindor scarves, and we're going to wear stripey socks that have gryffindor and slytherin colors on them. We are also drawing scars on our heads and bringing our big plastic Harry Potter glasses that we got at Barnes & Noble at the book 5 release. I hope I see other people dressed up, it would be fun.

:D

Unfortunately I don't think I'll be wearing a costume this year. I had wanted to wear a golden cloak/cape, but since I'm going with my family, and don't want to bring shame upon us (the idea of being disowned is not appealing) I'm just going to go as normal. I don't even have a Harry Potter shirt.

I may buy a plain black shirt and some fabric paint...

Oooh, the shirt sounds like a GREAT idea. I wonder where I could find one...Next Halloween I am for sure buying a scarf...It would be a wise investment. :D

Just a mention here that Hot Topic is carrying several HP shirts in both their mall stores and online store. We went to a sneak preview of the movie yesterday (yay!) and several people had on their Muggle shirts, Sirius poster shirts, and even the Azkaban prison shirt. We went to the store after the movie, and our mall store even had Muggle and Seeker baseball hats that are not available on the website.

Check out the online store at http://www.hottopic.com/store/searchSKU.asp?LS=0&DOIT=YES&SSTR=potter

I don't really see a problem with going alone to a movie premiere in costume. You shouldn't care what a bunch of strangers think because you'll probably never see any of them again. Besides, if you go in costume, it's a great way to meet people because for whatever reason, people feel compelled to talk to those who dress a bit differently.

I'd feel out of place if I didn't wear a costume.

In fact, I'm wearing my Hogwarts costume at the Sci Fi convention in San Jose this weekend. Last year I wore my quidditch costume. I was glad I did because the saturday masquerade ball's theme was the Hogwart's Yule Ball.

That was the night I ran into a bunch of Slytherins, Snape, and Lockhart.

That just sounds so funny to say you ran into Snape and some Slytherins, hehe. I should be so lucky.

We had a couple of Quidditch players (under 12) at the sneak preview yesterday, as well as a little Hermione. The big opening day should be a lot more costumed, though (especially if I have anything to do with it.) :)

If I had more time and money, I would have remade my quidditch robes, and created something that looks like the wrist and shin guards worn in the films. I will just have to save that costume for the WorldCon in Glasgow in August, 2005. It will also give me enough time to make a Firebolt and a Snitch, because I am, of course, a Seeker. :)

I'll have to make my mom wear the Professor Sprout costume, since she's kind of built like Miriam Margoyles.
