*I searched and didn't find a thread on this*

Well this is pretty self-explanatory... I know there must be American Idol fans here! What do you guys think of the new season?

The show they aired last night was hilarious! The first shows are always my favorite, I love seeing the people that can't sing  Highlights of the night were definitely "Scooter Girl", the one that drove all the people out of the bar, and the "Route 66" girl! :rotfl:

Flobb, I was just about to start a thread (literally...I was just about to click on "new thread") on this when I saw that you had started one!

Anywho. Scooter Girl was so cool, I hope she makes it to the final round! Seeing Simon bash all the people that couldn't sing was great, and watching Paula and Randy attempt not to laugh at people was priceless. I can't wait for the next episodes!

:rotfl: I can read people's minds. :elaugh:

Oh my gosh I know, I love Simon! He's so hilarious and the show would be a lot less exciting without him. When he just started cracking up and couldn't stop was great!

Can't wait for more tonight! Scooter girl was def. a breath of fresh air! It's nice to see someone who doesn't take themselves too seriously... Poor Poor Scat (Route 66) Girl :( She was at least nice about it after everything. I really hate when they get so HATEFUL back at Simon (even if he does deserve it). It makes them look petty and childish. Act like an adult, take critisim and then go yell when there are no cameras around. Supposedly he says that's the biggest differance between American Idol and Pop Idol... us Americans tend to talk back more.. who knew? ;) I wish I could have seen Pop Idol though... come on BBC America! :D

PS. My Beanie babies are in a box in the basement ;)

I felt sorry for that one kid who thought he had a lot in common with Clay Aiken..awww! He was adorable, and he took the criticism so well, too!

Who was the girl who made the deal with Simon to sing in the pub? I felt sorry for her, too, when there was only one or two people left at the end.

When they were filming the episode in Atlanta, my high school's football team was practicing in the Georgia Dome, and while I was there with my friend, we saw the people lined up for it. Some of them were coming out talking about what happened with the judges. It was kinda cool....

Anyway, I forgot about the first episode because I had a lot of homework. Does it come on on Tuesdays? If so, i'm watching it tonight.

Oh and by the way, Flobberworm that is one of two Beanie Babies I have left except it has the wrong tag. Its has the tag for Bones. The other one is the Princess Di bear.Sorry, off-topic.

 Scooter girl was great! I feel bad for the bloke they gave the scooter to though ! That was an awfully pink basket :) I have dance tonight from 7-8, so im gonna miss like the first fifteen minutes :( Sad....And tomorrow I've got religion from 7 15- 8 15! More sad :frown: And the route 66 girl....lol! She's definately....different.

I'm a first time watcher of the actual show. I watched it last night, and it was pretty good. Tonight is the Atlanta one (?) and my choir teacher might be on there because he tried out. He's got a really good voice.

But yes. the show it cool, and interesting.

hermy_weasley, yep, American Idol is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I think the show that was on last night was just because it was the premiere.

I can't wait to see the Atlanta ones tonight! I think that might be where Simon gets splashed with water by a contestant, but I'm not sure. I have to see that! :D

tizzy weasley, that's so cool that he might be on it! You have to tell us if he is!

I missed the first 15 minutes of it last night but caught the rest. I thought it was pretty entertaining. I felt bad for all those people who didnt do so well though. Honestly, don't you think the truly terrible one's families would say something to them about it before embarrassing themselves on public television?

I can't carry a tune to the bathroom, so as lame as this may sound if I ever auditioned for the show I would do something so incredibly stupid that I would get on TV. I mean, I would sing horrible or I would just do something sooo stupid!! lol, just so I could laugh at myself later on. :)

lol  ! Yay, a thread on American Idol!

That scooter girl was my favorite! I kind of feel sorry for the guy who had to ride a pink scooter home across the busy roads. He really must have turned a lot of heads! :rotfl:

The woman who drove all the people out of the restaurant was pathetic. She lost an obvious bet! Go Simon!

But I stick with this:
CLAY AIKEN ALL THE WAY!!

Last night was great! I felt so sorry for the guy that Simon and Randy couldn't stop laughing at, but it was pretty funny since Simon almost always keeps a straight face . I can't wait till tonight!

 Was it just me, or did it seem like there was a 15-minute commercial break for every 2 auditions? That really bugged me. More Simon, Randy, Paula, and bad singers - less shampoo advertisements!

Anywho. That one dude that Randy literally had to walk out of camera view for a few seconds, I felt really sorry for. Of course, I would have been cracking up too...

I felt sorry for that guy named Simon who wrote his own song that Simon (the judge) didn't like. Simon was right though, it was a sining competition.

And that one guy butchered Sweet Home Alabama . I love that song for so many reasons and ...yeah.

HannahStarr
January 22nd, 2004, 12:14 am
I remember that Simon guy! I felt really bad for him...he reminded me of a hippie or something. Even though he couldn't sing at all, and the idea was to win, not just spread peace and love.

Flobberworm
January 22nd, 2004, 12:17 am
:rotfl: Oh my gosh... yes he definitely reminded me of a hippie. He just wanted to "touch their hearts" or something like that. I felt kind of bad for him, but my philosophy is to never sing a song that you wrote for the audition. Just not a good idea.

HannahStarr
January 22nd, 2004, 12:28 am
I know! As soon as he said that he was going to sing something he wrote on his own, I knew he wasn't going to make it.

Anybody remember the one girl who auditioned last night and it was her first audition? Was it just me, or did it seem like she had some talent? I know her talent wasn't good enough for American Idol, but it seemed to be that she did have some talent.

Man, don't people realize when they can't carry a tune? sp,e of those people, I can't believe that they actually think they can sing!

Flobberworm
January 22nd, 2004, 3:55 am
:rotfl: I know!

Well tonight's episode... wow they were bad. The first guy that spit in his hand and put it in his back pocket and wasn't even excited was hilarious! They didn't even let him sing! And then the genius girl with the sparkly arms  I've never heard anything quite like that. The big fight the judges had was great too, and then the guy that splashed Simon with water and was then reported to the police was hilarious. I seriously think I was laughing the entire time during this episode! :rotfl:

Kaonashi, this is the same thing my man and I have been asking each other, while strugling not to laugh. My boyfriend is worse, cuz he gets so angry when Simon tells them they can't sing and then they get mad.

So peep this. He and I are conversing last night right, and after he's done bashing those wanna be singers who couldn't carry a tune, he says: "Babe listen, I sound like Reuben (Studdard)."

So he sang tp give me a taste of his Reubenism...

OMIGOD!!!..... His base was dull and tuneless and he was so convinced that he sounded like Reuben! That was the highlight of my night. He got caught in his own trap and he was like : "I don't understand, i know i sound like Reuben." :p

needless to say i was Rolling On The Floor Laughing My *** Off (ROTFLMAO) :rotfl:

I now understand how those people feel. They probably especially had been fooled in the beginning that they could sing.

But you know what.....I LOVE WATCHING THEM. And I have something extra to make fun of my boo about. That Bar Girl really did get a reality check. they wanna hate Simon for being honest. The group in the bar showed her.

hey did y'all see the flashback to 'LIKE A VIRGIN' dude?

Man i tell you, i love American Idol and i especially love Simon. ;)

On a Russian website I heard something about A Bulgarian girl that sounded like a man. And whenever people call her they say. "Is this Ivan." I missed it ****! Tell me more about this. LOL. Why is a Bulgarian on this show?

I liked the one with the lady who was so convinced that she could sing that she and Simon made a bet on whether or not she would clear out a bar. She did it too... and lost. It was so funny because everyone was gone except for ONE person (and I think he just stayed because he felt bad for her).

It is funny to see them complain about Simon when he tells them they can't sing. They're in denial.

God, I could never humiliate myself by going on that show. These people have got to have a lot of confidence.

Oh another great moment from last night- the girl that wouldn't stop singing that Randy said sounded like a ghost! :rotfl: And he said the weather was getting worse as she sang... too funny!

And I couldn't believe that Harvard girl!

HannahStarr
January 25th, 2004, 4:15 pm
The Harvard girl was so awful, I felt bad for her because she was from a family of musicians.

I do have one question: who won AI season one? Was it Justin or Kelly?

Just curious - Are next week's episodes going to be more auditions?

Flobberworm
January 25th, 2004, 5:44 pm
Kelly :) I haven't heard about Justin since he was on American Idol last season and sang that awful song...

Yes there will be more auditions. They still have to go to LA and I think they're going to Hawaii this year.

swishandflick
January 25th, 2004, 6:21 pm
The new American Idol is going well so far. I like the guy who sung for the Pope and the President---even if he was a bit arrogant. The most annoying part of the auditions is seing Kelly's giant mouth in the backround; theres a huge photo of her there that distracts me :p.

January 25th, 2004, 7:59 pm
Just a question.. Why did that guy throw water on Simon? Was he just trying to get back at him for not putting him through or what?

I think Scooter Girl is gonna win...everyone else has been (in the words of Simon) "Absolutely Diabolical" (he said that to i think carmen last year...)

I LOVE american Idol. I love watching Simon make fun of the *singers* it's so funny. I myself would never go on that show! LOL. I know I can't sing THAT good. LOL. For some reason, American Idol 3 is also screening internationally. It's not like people from where I'm from can impact on the results, but it's slightly amusing to watch, to say the least.

The untalented seem to have emerged from the woodwork in this series.

I have one question about last night (Tuesday's) episode. Remember the guy who was asked the question by Simon, "What would you do if you had a million dollars"? It seemed to me that Randy and Simon rejected this guy because he answered the question in a sort of false way - that he wasn't being sincere enough. But shouldn't they have let him in to round two because he had a good singing voice?

I'm watching it right now, and that very....strange singing dude was just on. Simon told him to go to the beach and find 5 people who thought he could sing, and he actually got more than 5 but it still made no difference  They've gott some good writers on that show though, because my whole family was cracking up when Ryan went "so he can go out and torchor his new-found groupies".!!

On Tuesday night my favorite was definately that man singing aghh...I can't remember what it was! :frown: um...When she moves? something like that...anyway, that guy had some real talent although he was shut down. He really did surprise me, wit a voice like that, he was sure to have had voice lessons eh ;) And his dancing!! That was amazing...:D

you know who!

lol i loved the girl who thought she was really good and simon told her to go the mall and find at least 10 people who thought she could sing, so she went to the the mall and noone liked her!!

Oh I LOOVE this season's American Idol...I just watched it last night, the episode where they were casting in Hawaii, San Fransisco, etc...

HILARIOUS! Those people who just kept singing even though they sucked rawkz....it shows that they've got that *umph* in them! I love that guy who Ryan relate to as "goat breed". That Chinese guy who sang "She Bangs" was hella funny too! He was like "I have no professional training whatsoever" I felt really bad laughing at him!!

Flobberworm
January 30th, 2004, 9:52 pm
:rotfl: The "She Bang" guy was great! I think he invented his own new style of dance! :D

Hawaii was really funny too. I was laughing so much at the "goat guy". The guy that Simon made a bet with for him to find 5 people on the beach that thought he was a good singer was great! I can't believe those people said they would actually buy his record, he was horrible! Tons of hilarious moments from Hawaii, but I can't remember all of them...

Ok, now that we've seen more episodes and the final 32, what does everyone think about the selections?

Heh, I love this show, but I think it's only because of Simon. I'm shocked that there are still people out there who can't sing worth anything yet will audition and then get mad when they don't get in!!

Does anyone know if that guy who sang to Paula made it to the top 32? I watched the episode but I don't remember.. he annoys me to no end.

Hannah, I was surprised when she didn't get through as well. I think it's just a matter of her style - she isn't exactly your typical pop star.

The guy looked good on camera but his voice was a bit weak for my taste. I like the energetic voices - I was rooting for Diana :)
And you're right, they do have a wildcard, but I think how that works is the judges choose some people they thought should go through. (I'm guessing they choose 4 of them, since there are only 4 groups?)

Flobby for Season 4!!!!!
:rotfl:

Tuesday was a great show. I'm really glad Diana and Fantasia got in, I was rooting for both of them.

With the wildcard show last year, they picked about 10 people to come back (some of them weren't even in the top 32). Then they performed normally. The next night, the judges each picked someone to go into the top 12 and they had a fan choice as well. Clay Aiken was the fan wildcard last year :).

HannahStarr
February 12th, 2004, 10:07 pm
Yup, this week's episodes were good. I had picked Diana, Fantasia, and Katie Webber to make it to the top three, but Katie didn't get in (she sang the jazz song, and I though she was really good). The guy that made it to the top three wasn't good at all, but I think he should be an actor.

*sighs* I was going to audition for this season but I found out about it too late! I want to audition for the next one, though. One of my friends, Dan, says that sometime he wants to audition and sing as poorly as possible so that he can get shown as one of the bad ones. lol The funny part about that is that I think he's a voice major. Oh, and I thought that Clay should have one last season, but Reuben was pretty awesome... I haven't seen any of this season's episodes (I don't have time to watch tv much) but my mom is a pretty big fan. lol Cheers!

You know that lady that cries after every time she sings (I forgot her name  )? I'm afraid that if she had become American Idol, she would flood the stage . . . . . . but she sings pretty well anyway.

Oooh. I like the way the competition's going this season. And my mom works with Diana's grandmother or something like that (it may be her aunt or friend's grandmother or something), so my mom and I have been voting for her anyway. She's got a pretty good voice too.

swishandflick
February 14th, 2004, 5:45 pm
I didn't think Fantasia was that great, so I was sort of surprised that the judges liked her so much. She has a great voice, but almost all of them do. I thought Diana was really good, though I didn't quite get the similarity between her and Christina Aguliera. The guy who looked good on film I think will come back for the wildcard round. He sort of had a goofy blank stare, but he was really good looking.

This weeks contestants weren't really fabulous. I only like two of them (so far). What I found funny was this one girl from Hawaii calling Simon sexy. Lol, it reminds me of how some people feel towards Snape. I guess being a jerk is appealing :) . I wonder if that works in the reverse? Maybe I should just start insulting guys and they will just start flocking. Hmmm. I sort of felt that none of the singers knew how to choose the proper songs for thier voices. It was all sort of blah tonight. Especially that one loser Jesus, he was completely horrible .:winks at Jesus:.

But how could Lisa not get through? Matthew was horrible and she did really well! I literally said "He's joking!" out loud when they said it  Not fair, I can't imagine what the judges were thinking when they announced that he made the final 12. Hopefully she'll be a wild card though.

Is it just me, or did it seem like some people who should have gotten in didn't (like Scootergirl and that biracial girl that resembled Uma Thurman) and some who shouldn't have did? There's nobody who I'm itching to see win. Maybe Fantasia and the guy with the opera voice who was a football player, but that's really about it.

swishandflick

I don't understand why scootergirl didn't get it either. They seem to have voted Mike on for purely novelty value. Scootergirl actually had both novelty value and a great voice. The producers I guess didn't do a good job of mixing bad and good this week.

I think it was cause he said he wanted to make Simon's head bleed :D

There are always people who should have gotten in but didn't. Half the people from last week's show could have won over this week's, but I guess no system's perfect.

If anyone is interested, they actually play William Hung on a radio station where I live, its a fairly famous one and other people might listen to it. It's Z100 if anyone is curious.

I'm considering not watching the top 12, because there is not even HALF as much talent as there was last year. In my opinion, I don't think that anyone will be as good as Clay this year.

The preformances this week were amazing. I could pick half of them to be the next Idols. Most outstanding though, was definately LaToya London. My jaw literally dropped. I had to look away from what I was doing and watch that preformance. It was better than even Kelly Clarkson's final winning performance of the first AI. The only bad thing about this perfomance, is that I think that it sort of spoils who the winner will be because that girl is it. She completely stole the competition, I could see the defeated looks in the eyes of the other contestants when she came back into the room. Seriously, I'm not one that gives acclaim easily, and I think she was incredible.

Wow, this week's show was so much better. Latoya was absolutely fantastic. I want to hear her performance again :D. It's weird though, because I don't remember hear at all from the auditions or the Hollywood shows; she just kind of came out of nowhere. I thought Amy Adams (the one with the pink hair) was quite good too. There's just something about her that I like.

HannahStarr

I voted this week for Lotoya London. My advice is wait an hour before calling because the lines are less crazy and I got through fine. With the exception of John Stevens, why did everyone feel that they had to SCREAM the notes tonight? It's like they saw Lotoya London and thought that being a bunch of hyenas would get them through the next round. It was insane. A bunch of screamers, they were. John Stevens was very refreshing in light of this. I don't particularily like any of them, but I think that Jasmine from Hawaii did a good job. Hopefully this trend won't carry on untill the end of the competition.

Honestly, the three judges are losing GRIP. I recalled there were many talented but eliminated candidates. And, I couldn't understand why. Flobberworm

Yep, that's how it was last year anyway. I heard somewhere that the judges would be narrowing the 12 Wildcards to only 8 during the rehearsals, but I'm not sure if that's true.

Flibbertigibbet, I agree. I can't imagine how the show would be without Simon. "I could drive a car through your mouth." :rotfl: Gotta love him :D.

I can. I've seen Canadian Idol and I found it kind of disappointing, mainly because of the judges and host. :sigh: Though to be fair, there's no way I can watch CI without comparing it to AI. There's a new season coming up - here's hoping it'll be better.

So Leah's gone, and I'm really glad, because not only can she not sing as well as everybody else in the final 12 (except Matthew), she seems to have a bad attitude about it as well. I was watching her on the Wild Card episode and then on Tuesday, and she just had this sour look on her face most of the time. So I'm glad she's gone.

John Stevens has a really good voice, but all he does is sing slow, Frank Sinatra-like songs. You can't be an American Idol if you're stuck in the 50's and 60's. He needs to sing faster, more pop-like songs. Otherwise I don't think he'll win.

Aw, I feel kind of sorry for Leah. I never did like the country music theme. They're always the most uninteresting really. Camille is definitely the weakest link at the moment. I really like her voice, but she has to impress Simon or otherwise he'll say something costly once again. She has to be more confident of herself.

Godric...if John Peter Lewis was voted off you'd be facing a mob of very angry teenage girls and one EXTREMELY angry teenage boy (at LEAST one). I find JPL quite smashing...so smashing that I almost missed cues for a stage production I was in just to watch him perform...and this was a pay job...I've been voting for him every week and I'm standing by it...I want Camille to go next...she's so boring...

I'd bet my entire life savings that this competition boils down to John Peter Lewis, LaToya whatever-her-last-name-is, and that red haired guy (as you can see...I don't pay much attention to anyone but JPL...) and some people may read this and say "qua?" but here's my reasoning. JPL has the cute factor, I mean, tell me y'all didn't think him trying to dance was the cutest thing in the world? LaToya is just awesome, I mean, no words for it, she just is, and the red haired guy has the geek factor, which draws in a pretty good audience (my mom, for one). So there you go...

Godrics_Heiress
March 28th, 2004, 7:16 am

I always thought Jennifer Hudson sings much, much better than LaToya and Fantasia (quasi-Macy Gray if you ask me). And let me reiterate: JPL can't sing. Even radio stations here in California couldn't fathom some people's obsession with this guy. Me neither. The candidates' personal lives should not be used as a gauge to who wins the American Idol.

im starting to dislike fantasia because of the way she reacted when criticized. on the other hand, there's something humbling about latoya. their both great singers but tehir attitudes make a world of a difference for them.

and lemme say it again: i love john stevens!! omg. he nearly cried again that night.. =P

I felt bad for John Stevens. He knew his performance had been one of the worst. In many ways it's not a fair competition. John Stevens' voice is just not comparable to some of the more soulful singers. He's great at what he does, but he has very little depth to his voice. There's no way he can compete in a motown competition. It's like apples and oranges.

I love John Stevens...not as much as JPL, but I think he's awesome...BUT I think most people would agree with me here, he deserved to go last time, and they kept showing his face, he KNEW he deserved to...and as much as I hate camille (and GOD I do!) last time he WAS the worst...Amy should have stayed on...

Oh, and JPL rocks, get used to him, he's gonna be around for quite some time, at least as long as I and all the little freshman girls at my school that I can pressure to vote for him are still voting (and we will be till the end of this bloody thing)

Yes, JPL is one of my favourites now as well! If he lifts the bar a little bit more I really think he'll win the competition. I just wish I could vote ... ahh **** Australian citizenship!

John Stevens was frightfully bad, I actually felt sorry for the bloke. It amazed me that he wasn't voted off as he was truly horrible. JPL is pretty ordinary, on the basis of pure talent he's right down the bottom. I'm not even sure his highly overrated looks will get him much further or at least they shouldn't if the American public has any ounce of taste.

George was easily the best followed by Diana. At this stage I'd say that George should win as he's been in my opinion the best in each show I've seen.

This was a horrible night for American Idol. There were maybe two good performances...but nothing stood out. JPL was terrible--almost as bad as John. It sounded like someone stuck daggers down thier throats before thier performances. It makes me wonder how they got this far. I'm thinking John Stevens will be cut this week, then next week or the week after will be JPL.

Latoya London, Fantasia, and George (I think thats the one who squats' name) are ruling this competition so far. I hope some of the others start to stand out more because last season it was all about Rueben and Clay after the finals and it got boring.

I can't believe George was a wildcard! He should have been straight into the final 12. I can't wait until Sunday night when we see the next performance, squee!

I saw the excerpts from last nite's show. The red headed boy needs to be put out of his misery. He clearly wants to just go home now. His voice is just not cut out for contemporary music. He wonderful with the big band jazz singing. He caught my attention at the AI trials. He reminded me of Harry Connick Jr.

Now the young lady that Elton John was most impressed with, I BET you that she'll be getting a call from him to join the cast for The Lion King after her rendission of the theme song.

But I'm putting my money on the girl that sounds like Maice Grey. I forget what her name was. She's the one that sang "Let's Give Them Something To Talk About".

Last night's episode was good only because it was all Elton John. There were very few good singers, though. I was very unimpressed. Jennifer was probably my favorite.

I'm changing my Final four prediction. John Stevens is not going to go much farther at the rate he's going. So I'm guessing LaToya, Fantasia, George, and Jasmine.

Her name's Fantasia. The problem with her is she does sound like Macy Gray and I don't think that's a good quality. She needs to find her own style. She's got no originality at all. I'm rooting for Jennifer Hudson. I really, really like her and I would love to see her win it all.

I have a new respect for Elton John after that episode. Apparently his songs are not easy to sing. I'm glad Camille went-never really liked her. I doubt John Stevens will last much longer, although I'm still rooting for him.

Here's another who has new respect for Elton John! I never thought how difficult it could be to sing his songs until I watched Tuesday's show. I was really sad to see Camile go. I was hoping she would make it a lot farther, for I think she has a beautiful voice, with a different tone that I've rarely heard in anyone else's. But perhaps her voice was not as suited to the competition as others' are. I hope that she'll go her own way and continue to sing soulful ballads and R&B. She is one of my favorites.

I hope Fantasia and George make it very far. They're incredible! Jasmine and Jennifer, also. This is a very talented group of finalists, and it will be interesting to see how they all place in the end.

I'm sorry Camille is gone, but she doesn't really compare to other singers in the competition. I don't know why people are voting for John Stevens, because he hasn't improved at all. And I loved the Elton John theme. :D

I loved the theme for Tuesday's episode, but I wasn't very impressed with the singing. Jennifer was really good though, as was George and LaToya. I'm sorry to all the John Stevens fans, but I don't understand how he didn't leave on Wednesday. It was just horrible. I don't know how he didn't get into the Bottom 3. *ducks from objects being thrown at her head*

Anyway, next week's episode should be interesting. The theme is "Songs from the Movies".

The theme was pretty good, the singing for the most part was utterly horrible. How the likes of John Stevens and JPL were not in the bottom three is surely a mystery. The two of them among others admittedly were horrible.

Some opinions formed because of this show: George in my opinion was the best by a long way and based entirely on performance should easily win, Fantasia has become arguably the most annoying individual to ever appear on television, John Stevens should be voted out - as should JPL - the two of them are not up to scratch, as a competition it's been devalued because it can be seen that the best are not getting a majority of votes, I can't help but get swept up in the youthful enthusiasm of Diane - I think she's great - and finally Elton John must be a hell of a lot more talented than I thought as you'd think more than three out of nine might've given his songs justice.

Does anyone else think that these promotional segments are incredibly cheesy? Seriously, today they had the cast washing there hair singing into hair brushes with Herbal Essence shampoo. I watched The Nick and Jessica Variety hour, and thought that that was better than these segments. Doesn't AI make enough money already without this nonsense?

Fantasia was fantastic tonight, though doing the performance sitting was a risky move. Diane was boring...I'm sorry but I can't stand Titanic. I missed George's performance, but I'm sure he was good. John Stevens was interesting, he is starting to look more like Ryan Seacrest, his performance was alright. JPL was good, he's going to be in the top five strictly because of personality. Latoya London was great as well. Jasmine was okay, but I predict she will be voted off soon along with Diana, and then John Stevens. Good night for American Idol :).

I couldn't watch 'cause somebody had to watch the hockey game :grumble:. Ah well. At least I got to miss the Titanic song (I can't stand to listen to it anymore).

swishandflick, I agree, the promotional segments are awful. They don't even try to be subtle about it (though I suppose that's the point..). I for one am a bit sick of seing Ford SUVs all over the place...

EDIT: Never mind, I didn't realize AI was on today and not yesterday! Oops  Well, I got to see a few performances, anyway - I caught the last half of Fantasia's and I wish I'd seen it all. Her voice annoys me sometimes, but it was amazing today!

I am obsessed with American Idol this season! I came dangerously close to boycotting it when they voted Amy Adams off; I think she's incredibly talented and personality like that doesn't come along every day. Unlike Camile (thank God she's gone!) who oversang every note that came out of her mouth and had the charisma of a turnip. Jasmine is my new favorite now that Amy's gone; she's very refreshing and sweet. After seeing Fantasia's performance this evening, I'm now convinced she'll make it to the final 3, along with George (who's darling!) and LaToya (who is simply amazing). Jon Peter Lewis I think has quirky talent, the girls like him because he's cute and guys like him because he's goofy. John Stevens I also think is adorable but his vocal style is too narrow to go too much farther. Diana I usually like but lately I must agree with Simon in saying that "you could see that on any high school stage across America". And finally, Jennifer I usually am indifferent to but this week she totally blew me away. Well this is kind of long but I just wanted to present my take on the whole thing, I'm pulling for Jasmine but i think it'll come down to George (I bet he was a cute baby!) and LaToya.

Last night's episode ws okay for me. I missed Fantasia's performance because I was doing homework, but I saw that the judges loved her, so that must be good. I really cannot stand Diana, Jasmine, JPL, and John Stevens anymore. LaToya's performance gave me chills last night, it was that good!

Godrics_Heiress
April 15th, 2004, 10:53 pm
I don't know what's the big deal with Fantasia's performance. I was totally bored with it and I don't know why the judges were so impressed. It's too Macy Gray! And please, we've got enough of her style in the music industry.

LaToya was great last night (although her voice is too common and mediocre compared to a lot of female black singers), as well as my favorite, Jennifer Hudson.

As for the bottom three, it's hard to assume who will be. My guesses, though:

George------------------he was horrible last night
JPL-----------------------don't know what this guy is still doing on the show
John or Jasmine-------Jasmine wasn't very impressive last night. John did better, but he's still a wrong American Idol. He's a jazz singer, not pop or R&B, etc. Jazz is not a popular music genre, so he can't be the Idol.

America doesn't just like pop you know. its not all about pop. The american idol doesn't have to be good in other area's of music as long as there good in one. Thats what there CD would be like, not a mix of different styles. Plus John stevens isn't really jazz...

I thought it was really good last night! Fantasia was great, even though I don't like her voice sometimes. LaToya was easily my favorite of the night. It gave me chills too, Hannah, and brought me right back to before Christmas when we read West Side Story in English class :D.

Sorry to all their fans, but JPL and John Stevens need to leave soon, even though I don't think they will. I think JPL is very mediocre and is still there because all the girls are voting for him. Same thing with John. I predict that Diana goes home tonight.

On a different note, I just heard on Entertainment Tonight that William Hung's new album is at #34 on the charts.

WEST COAST SPOILER ALERT

I think JPL went out with a huge bang. If he'd been that good last night he wouldn't have been voted off. Last night he was just so tense and dancing like a robot. It was painful to watch.

Speaking of painful, Jennifer Hudson makes me cringe every time she sings, too. She has a really nice voice, but there's just something about her. I think Fantasia or LaToya should take it. They're both fun to watch and a pleaure to listen to.

I'm glad that JPL handled it so well. I've liked him since he first auditioned, and really enjoyed seeing him whenever he performed, but was worried that some of the others would begin to get booted to accomodate him. I was surprised to see both John and Jon in the bottom 2-- I thought that their fan bases would pull them through. But I'm glad that Diana is safe for another week. I don't think she'll win it, but I think she deserves to last a bit longer.

I think Fantasia is amazing. Her performance was my favorite last night; I think it was really incredible. She has a way of transforming the whole stage, and it gives me the chills just to listen to it. I want her to make it to the very end, or take the whole thing.

JPL is gone. Good. :D However, likes Kneazle said, I was surprised to see both Johns in the bottom two because they have an enormous amount of fans and I figured they would still be voting for them even if they did stink. Wasn't surprised to see Diana down there, but I knew she wasn't going to get voted off because she wasn't as bad.

I wonder if there is a ring of truth to what Simon says about audiences voting off people because of thier ages. Granted, they weren't the best singers in the world but niether were the Backstreet Boys and the Britney Spears' of the world. AI is definately showing the shift in the music industry since 9/11, and the move towards more serious artists like Fantasia and Ruben Studdard. In 2000, there is no way JPL would've been voted off with all the teeny bopper fans.

What is he then? He sounds very jazzy to me. Do you think he can sing rock or R&B, Pop? I don't think so. You are right that America doesn't just like pop, but we are talking about the majority of American Idol viewers who can identify more with non-jazz music. Plus, American Idol was created from Britain's Pop Idol and Simon once said that they are looking for Pop singers specifically, or someone who has aura to attract young music fans since their mantra is 'make money out of the American Idol winner.'

I thought Diana's performance was horrible. She went way over her head picking a song like that because she couldn't handle it very well at all.

Plus, it was the most over-sung in the world.

My mom works with a friend of Diana's family, and she was telling me that Diana had chosen another dress and hairstyle that she had rehersed in once before the show, or something like that, and the wardrobe people suggested she change just before she performed. That probably didn't have any effect at all on how she san, but you never know.

John Stevens doesn't seem very jazzy to me. Obviously, he likes the really slow, old ballads that were popular in the 50's but not today. However, I agree that he can't be an American Idol unless he does perform more modern/faster songs. Nobody wants to listen to slow songs all the time. (At least, I don't. :p)

Just saw last weeks episode.

JPL was simply horrible and was deservedly voted out - I genuinely think that trying to cover Elvis is a mistake waiting to happen and he proved that. Diana should've known better than to sing that song, I don't think I've ever heard anyone cover it well - and a lot have tried. John was a lot better than the previous two weeks but that really isn't anything to be proud of - I suspect he'll go next week.

I felt that Jennifer was probably the best performance, she's really grown on me in the past two weeks. I wasn't really impressed by Fantasia - admittedly I don't really like her a lot and the song isn't a great one but she just doesn't do anything for me. George's performance was well below his usual high standards - hopefully he'll bounce back because I'm hoping he'll win the thing.
