I'm sure there was a thread, but I searched and searched and couldn't find it so...
I really like these books and I have two questions
1. You know the code in every book. Since I don't live in an english speaking country, I don't own the books in english. I would be really happy if someone could tell me what it means.
2. I've heard that a shorter Artemis Fowl novel will be released soon. When?
:p

I read the first book, and started on the second but I couldn't really get into it so I stopped. I'm not really sure what code you're talking about, not that I'd be of any service to your dilemma if I did know...

I read all three of them, but it was ages ago, so I don't really remember the code anymore. I broke the first two myself, and the third one's weird, but I know I've seen a web-page once, that had them there. It's basically letter-for-symbol replacement, so it's quite simple to break it, just try and guess what certain symbols mean, you can make a table. It's usually best to start with short words - English has one-letter words, such as "a" and "i". I can't really think of any other, so you only have two possiblities for one of the symbols. Two letters: "an", "on", "so" etc. It's also useful to keep in mind that most sentences have a certain structure, for example: pronoun, verb, adjective, noun. The longer the encrypted message, the easier it is to decipher.

I think This (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=17336&highlight=artemis+fowl) may be the thread you wre thinking of. It's not about the books, but about a future film.

I read the first one and I think it's a a really brillaint! The characters are really unusual, not the sort of people you'd might every day, but they're done so that they're extraordinary and believable at the same time. It's interesting that you there's a battle throughout the book, but I didn't really find myself cheering for either side... The fairies are probably the ones who are "right", but I really didn't want anything bad to happen to Artemis or Butler. Although Artemis is said to be "evil" a few times, I really had a lot of sympathy for him when it came to his parents... He doesn't really seem to be completely bad.
eruriel
April 5th, 2004, 1:34 am
Well, after each book he turns out to be a little less bad after all :eyebrows:
Tim the Wiz
April 5th, 2004, 9:41 am
Ahh, but at the end of the 3rd book he was evil again.
I like these books and other Eoin Colfer books, always great for a laugh, with a good plot and plenty of action.
Otherwise the new book is coming out this year.

I love Artemis Fowl. I think they are really good. I just love the way myth and magic is combined with modern technology. It's very funny too.
And yes, I deciphered all codes from all 3 books... I can tell you it's been a lot of work. I'm not sure if I should post them here because they contain lots of spoilers...
So, if you need any of the translations just send a PM and I'll send the translations to you.

I have read the first two books, but have no deep desire to read the third one which is spending it's time collecting dust while i move it around to get another book beneath it or by it. The first two were good and i know the third one is better becasue i went through it till i was at the end.

Who else here loves Foaly, that smart cracking centaur. Ahh, and that convict dwarf. I really like those books. They're a nice fast read.

I sort of had a liking for Butler too. The way he's the ultimate body guard is cool and sort of funny... I'd really have hated it if he died at the end of the first book, he just seems like a good guy. He should stand up to Artemis more... but then again I haven't read the two last books.

I didn't like the ending of Book 3. There is a fourth, shorter book called Artemis Fowl: The Seventh Dwarf. It was produced for World Book Day.

Yes that was a small story created by Colfer but the real 4th book sequel is coming out soon.

Artemis Fowl has definitely been a help while I am going through Harry Potter withdrawls. The funny exchanges between the drawf and the head of ELF remind me of the Weasley twins.

April 12th, 2004, 11:46 am
Well, from Mr Colfer's Official Site (http://www.eoincolfer.com) in the FAQ's section he hints towards the fourth book to be the last.
And yes, Foaly, does ROCK, as you so put it. But I think that Foaly deserves a medal for being the coolest person in LEP in the next book, but thats just me. :D

I just love the Artimis Fowl books, i read them as soon as i bought them and couldn't put them down until id finished. I never bothered with the code thing it looked way to complicated for my tiny brain, does anyone know when the next book will be out?

I think I'm becoming Americanised from spending too much time on these forums... :D
Yes, we hand Foaly the award for being the coolest guy in the LEP. Though Trouble Kelp's kind of cool, too.
I'm wondering what can possibly happen in the 4th book. The end of the 3rd one feels like the end. My sister hated the ending because she said 'what's the point of Artemis becoming all caring and stuff, and then getting his memory wiped so the whole effect is lost?' This didn't really bother me, because you know that Mulch is going to bring him the medallion and all his memories will be returned...what did you guys think?
Tim the Wiz
April 13th, 2004, 3:21 pm
Yeh, we all know Mulch'll bring back his memory in book 4, that in itself will be fun to read.
eruriel
April 16th, 2004, 12:35 am
I'm not sure I will enjoy the 4th book. The third had such a perfect end, I loved it! Not too sad, not too happy...(well ok, I guess it was more sad than happy. But in a good way).
I'm affraid this next book will end "..and they lived happily ever after..." or something like that.

April 23rd, 2004, 6:21 am
Hey all, I love the artemis books too. Yes, Mulch will definately bring back the medallion...but artemis told him to "KEEP YOUR NOSE CLEAN FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AND THEN FIND ME" If he follows artemis' instruction, then by the time Artemis had his memory returned he will be what, sixteen? Isn't that a little old? Also, I think Artemis' might find the fairies AGAIN with those iris-cams that were somehow in his eyes after his memory was wiped. What do you think?
By the way, yeah, the end of the 3rd book was a good ending for the series, but I'm glad the series isn't over :D
PS. Foally rocks.

I sort of freaked out after finishing book 3, then sanity pitched in and I realized it could not possibly be the last book (I can't be the only one who thought AF was going to be a trilogy  ), that calmed me down and got me all excited again for book 4. And the movie. Yay!
Isn't it weird about this parallel between HP and AF?
Book 1: good, that's why we're still reading, isn't it?
Book 2: Worst book out of both series.
Book 3: My favourite.

When I finished the third book, I just seriously knew there had to be a fourth. It just so couldn't end there. Completely unfinished. Really, I bet Artemis will cause some trouble with the fairies again because it seems absolutely likely that erasing his memory will turn him into the criminal mastermind he was. That's just my opinion. I can't wait till the fourth book comes out because it promises to be really very good.
I agree, Foaly is the best character.
What codes are we talking about?

Artemis Fowl rocks! It's one of the few book series I can stand to read over and over again (HP is of course another), and when I'm bored and need a lift emotionally, I turn to AF. I remember hearing at one point that it was going to be a trilogy and just that... but I think that Colfer had so much fun with it, he couldn't resist adding onto it! I totally understand this, as I write too (not prolifically yet, and most of my stories are still in draft stages... but I can definately sympathize with becoming so attached to characters that you keep thinking "Oh, what the hel, one more adventure..." XD)

The best character is by FAR Foally. I love him! He's the kinda guy I would like instantly. I also always like Julie, tho she was a bit of a constant ditz.

I enjoyed the first book, but I wasn't too crazy about the last two. I think the idea just got a bit old for me. It was a good idea for one book, but three was stretching it a bit. Breaking the code was amusing, even if it was about phlegm ;)

For World Book Day a 57 page book called the Seventh dwarf came out in England and Ireland.
In October or September 2004 a book called the Artemis Fowl File which includes the seventh dwarf and another short story, plus character descriptions and goodies like that :tu:
In June 2005 the 4th book is coming out. It's called the Opal Deception and Opal Koboi is in it.Plus you might see Carla frazetti again in the fourth *or* fifth.

I'm sure I am in a minority here, but I really don't like this book. I found it on sale at a book store and decided I'd give it a whirl...well, I wasn't impressed. I found Artemis midly interesting, but I couldn't get attatched to any of the other characters, and the story failed to grab me at all. I didn't even realize there were more books until last year, but I haven't, and don't plan on, reading any of them. Perhaps I should give the book another go; it's been years since I've read it, but the feeling of dislike that I associate with that book has manifested over the years.

I understand how you feel. I've felt this over many books. But if I were you I'd be sure to give the whole series a whirl. (Only 3 books)
I guarantee you'll enjoy it at least slightly. I think all will agree that it needs at least two chances.

Yeah, but we all know from the ending that Mulch Diggums will be released and come to our dear boy Arty and refresh his memory a bit. And also from what I hear Koboi will be intergrated heavily into the story of book 4, most probably it'll be a situation that'll need Artemis Fowl somehow involved with it.
Don't worry, I think his memory will be back in book 4.

I really like the Artemis Fowl series and I don't think it's 'retarded' that Artemis' mind was wiped at the end, if anything its going to make the next book more interesting, espcially since he is going to regain his memory soon enough or later. It gives the plot and storylines and extra twist.
I've recently read The Eternity Code and thought it was the best out of all three - I keep meaning to crack the codes (the ones at the bottom of each page, not just a pretty design), but I keep forgetting.

Argh! I LOVE Artemis Fowl!
I'll give you a hint who my favourite character is.
Red hair. Tetchy expression. Tendency to hit the protagonist-slash-antagonist.
And Foaly rules too.
Have you guys read the Seventh Dwarf? I loved the description of Holly in the health spa. She had been "plucked, tweezered and purged (don't ask)...and she was bored out of her mind".

I enjoyed reading the AF series. They were great! I read them when I was missing HP.
And like others have said, Foaly Rulz! I also really like Holly.
The 3rd book is by far the best out of the 3. I'm glad to hear that there's going to be a 4th! I was kind of upset my the ending of book 3. It will be interesting to see how all of IT works out....

My god. If someone asked me what my two favorite books were, I would answer "Series, you mean? Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl."
I even started an AF forum... *so not plugging*
Anyway, I can't wait for October!! The AF Files!! I am so envious of the people who have already read The Seventh Dwarf ... I don't even know what it's about. *sigh* Ah well. I'll get it soon enough. :D
And I've yet to hear anything else about The Opal Deception. Colfer mentioned it in an interview way back in 2003, on World Book Day, I believe. He also said that it takes him about a year to write a book/get it published/edited/etc. So judging by that calculation, we should have it by now...?
And some people think it's creepy but I do ship Arty/Holly... at least, I repeat, least, in a friendshippy kind of way. I also think it's funny how she punches him at least once in every book. :rotfl: And lollipops! That was... *dies laughing*
My favorite characters... Holly. Holly is the rockingest fairy ever, man. She just rocks. 'Nuff said.
Foaly. Hahahahaha, sarcastic horse-dude. w00t!
Artemis. What can I say? He's Artemis.
Mulch. Ah, Mulch. At first I didn't like him, but I have grown to like the stinky little guy. Go figure.
Heh, that's it. I think I have rambled enough. *plugs*

I love Artemis Fowl too. I have got say that Eoin Colfer never fails to better each books predecessor, where with HP I love all the books, PoA has remained my consistant favourite, with neither GoF nor OoTP living up to it, but each Artemis book is better than the one before it. I adore Mulch and Foaly I feel that Artemis would definately beat Harry in an IQ test, although I will add theres no Dobby.

I personally enjoyed the Second the Most. Yes Foaly is the coolest guy ever!
I cried at the beginning of the third. You know that thing. I don't want to spoil it for anybody. I thought it was the end for our Good Friend Domovoi (was that giving anything away?) But then I wiped my eyes, when I found out it wasn't over for Dommy.
I loved the Artemis Fowl books to death!
But there are some people who think that Artemis and Holly are getting together. Ugh! She's like sixty years older than him! And then there are people that want Root and Holly! The most plausible that I have heard is Holly/Butler, Juliet/Artemis. I mean plausible age-wise.

The only problem I have with the series, is the constant bashing of people.....
I understand the 'environmental' message, but sometimes it seems a little forced.......
I mean, yeah......people pollute, but I think that if other intelligent races populated the earth, they'd do likewise......
our intelligence is a blessing and a curse......we seek to better mankind, at the expense of every other creature.....

"Like Harry Potter" ... About the only thing they have in common are centaurs... But nevermind.
Arrrrgh!! When is the fourth book coming out?! (*ahem* too much exclamation marks for my age...)
Yeah, I agree that Eoin Colfer's books seem to get better the more he writes, (unlike *some* authors, I'm sure you all know at least one...)
A few months ago I picked up one of the 'Benny and Omar' books, gave up half way through... But the third AF book was simply brilliant.

Mulch might have a chance too. Maybe just maybe...Root?...Oh! Foaly's your best bet.

Mulch??? Are you sure?? He is a disgusting creature! Foaly? Wouldn't that be a little awkward. I think the most likely for Holly is Butler. He's the closest to her age, and they have both shown little feelings for each other. Root might have some feelings for Holly, but I don't think she has any for him. Foaly, I think, just really enjoys Holly's company, and vice versa.
I think Artemis' only romantic prayer is Juliet.

And to reply to your above discussion, why must romance be a part of every book?

And yes, I did find that people were convinced that there needed to be a little romance in AF for it to be complete was a little iffy. I mean, I think we are safe, everyone is sooo far apart in age.
Oh, and Mr. Colfer's name is pronounced Owen, correct? A little research and some Irish phonetics, and I figured it out, but am I right?

I haven't gotten around to AF files or the Seventh Dwarf, because my library doesn't have it yet, and I haven't gotten to the bookstore lately, but I really want to read them.
Who is so sad about the end of Eternity Code?
Sophie Patil
December 8th, 2004, 4:20 pm
I read the seven dwarf a couple weeks ago, I liked it. but not as much as the other ones (well, obviously not, as it was so short ;))
I LOVE artemis fowl. actually I think I like it just as much as harry potter. but the potter books depend on each other more, with AF it's more that each story works for itself. so I'm not as excited about the artemis fowl files as much as I am about HP 6.
did anyone read any other books by eoin colfer? 'the wish list' is SO SO SO great!!! if you haven't you NEED to read it!!
oh, and by the way. if he's gonna put a romance in there I'm gonna kick him. well... juliet can have a romance, holly would be alright as well...- but pleeaaase! artemis? that would ruin it for me..

When he took butler to the freezer in the kitchen! Some people say AF is predictable, but I never saw that one coming!

I didn't either. I was all like, "Whoa...dude...I mean I really liked Butler too, but that isn't going to work." But, Artemis is usually right.

Will Butler be included? Or left on the sidelines?

Well, she has close to the Blue Diamond doesn't she? I think there is a lot to Juliet.
I think Foaly WILL do something VERY big, and VERY important. I think that poor little Domovoi (I promised myself) will have to give up his career as a bodyguard, but I don't think that he will give up that easily. He will find something else to do.

For anyone who's interested, here's a translation of the 1st book code below.
I wrote down the third book code on paper, so I'm not going to type it all up, but it just says what we basically know about AF's memory and says something like 'Artemis Fowl must find Mulch diggums, spread the word'
Gawd, I'm a sad, sad person. But I was pretty bored at the time...
Oh yeah, I love Foaly, he is AWESOME. Again, I'm a sad, sad person. Oh well, here it is:
AM OHM, PHLEGM POT CLEANER, MORE THAN THAT, FOR I SEE THE FUTURE WRITTEN IN THE PHLEGM. FOR CENTURIES WE PIXIES HAVE READ THE PHLEGM, BUT I AM BEST THERE HAS EVER BEEN. MY VISIONS ARE GENERALLY OF LITTLE IMPORTANCE. I FORETELL OUTBREAKS OF TROLL POX OR GAS SPASMS AMONG ELDERLY DWARFS. BUT SOMETIMES EVEN A POOR POT CLEANERCAN SEE WONDROUS THINGS. A VISION CAME TO ME TWO MOONS AGO WHEN I WAS GAZING DEEP INTO HIS MAJESTYS OWN PHLEGM POT. I WAS HEATING THE POT OVER A FLAME WHEN THE SIGN APPEARED. THIS VISION WAS MORE VIVID AND DETAILED THAN ANY I HAD PREVIOUSLY SEEN. BECAUSE OF ITS IMPORTANCE I DECIDED TO WRITE IT DOWN FOR POSTERITY. AND SO I CAN SAY I TOLD YOU SO. I SAW AN AGE WHERE THE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DRIVEN UNDERGROUND BY THE MUD MEN. THIS IS WHAT THE PHLEGM TOLD ME. IN THIS TIME ONE SHALL COME AMONG US. FOWL BY NAME AND FOUL BY NATURE. A MUD MAN UNLIKE ANY OTHER. HE SHALL LEARN OUR SECRETS AND USE THEM AGAINST US. I SEE HIM NOW AS PLAIN AS DAY; HIS FACE IS PALE, HE HAS DARK EYES AND RAVEN HAIR. YET IT MUST BE A MISTAKE, FOR HE SEEMS A MERE YOUTH. SURELY NO MUD BOY COULD OUTWIT THE PEOPLE. BUT NOW I SEE THAT THE BOY IS NOT ALONE. HE IS AIDED BY A FORMIDABLE WARRIOR SCARRED FROM A THOUSAND BATTLES. THIS FOWL SHALL HOLD THE PEOPLE TO RANSOM FOR THEIRMOST PRISED POSSESSION. GOLD. AND IN SPITE OF ALL OUR MAGIC THERE IS A CHANCE THAT HE WILL PREVAIL. FOR HE HAS DISCOVERED HOW TO ESCAPE THE TIME FIELD. UNFORTUNATLY, HOW THE STORY ENDS I CANNOT SAY. BUT THERE WAS MORE TO SEE. THERE IS ANOTHER STORY TO COME. SOMEONE WILL BRING THE PEOPLE AND MUD MEN TOGETHER. THE WORST OF BOTH RACES. THIS FAIRY’S GOAL IS TO GRIND ALL THE CREATURES OF THE EARTH BENEATH HIS BOOT. AND WHO IS THIS TRAITOR? IT IS NOT CLEAR. BUT HE WILL START A WAR UNLIKE ANYTHING THE PEOPLE HAVE EVER SEEN. THOSE WHO WERE ENEMIES SHALL BE UNITED AGAINST HIM. AND FOR THE FIRST TIME THERE WILL BE MUD MEN BELOW GROUND. I HAVE ONE CLUE TO HIS IDENTITY – A RIDDLE. GOBLIND WILL RISE AND HAVEN SHALL FALL, A VILLAINOUS IS BEHIND IT ALL, TO FIND THE ONE SO DISSAPPOINTED LOOK YE TO WHERE THE FINGER POINTS. INSTEAD OF ONE FACE THIS ELF HAS TWO. BOTH SPEAK FALSE AND NONE SPEAK TRUE. WHIKLE PUBLICALLY HE LENDS A HELPING HAND HIS TRUE AIM IS TO SEIZE CONTROL. I KNOW. ITS NOT VERY PLAIN IS IT, I DON’T UNDERSTAND IT EITHER. BUT PERHAPS IN THE FUTURE ALL WILL BECOME CLEAR. LOOK FOR A POWER HUNGRY ELF WHO HAS A FINGER POINTED TO HIM DURING OUR TALE. AND SO THIS IS OHM’S LEGACY. A WARNING THAT MAY SAVE THE WORLD FROM TOTAL DESTRUCTION. THERE’S NOT MUCH TO WORK WITH, I KNOW. THE DETAILS ARE A BIT SKETCHY. MY ADVICE TO YOU IS TO CONSULT THE PHLEGM. IT MAY BE THAT YOU ARE SENSITIVE. I HAVE BURIED THIS PHROPHECY WITH MY PHLEGM POT. IF YOU ARE NOT FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO BE A POT CLEANER, THERE IS USUALLY A SUPPLY OF PHLEGM EVERY TIME YOU HAVE A COLD. HERE ENDETH THE FIRST PROPHECIES OF OHM. BUT BECAUSE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF MY VISIONS I SHALL REPEAT THE PROPHECIES ONCE MORE. IF YOU HAVE JUST BEGUN TO UNDERSTAND THE TEXT, THEN READ ON. IF YOU HAVE WORKED OUT THE ENTIRE MESSAGE, THEN CONGRATULATIONS. NOW GO AND SAVE THE WORLD.

Woah, I never even knew the first book had a code...
I really like this series, though it's been a while since I read it, so I can't remember that many details. I remember working out the Centaurian code in The Arctic Incident, though ...something random about protecting the environment, repeated a couple of times.
Do I like Artemis? Yeah, I guess, because he's so ambitious and tries to be an evil genius but isn't all that good at it.

I really need to re-read the AF books, I've just backread a few pages of this thread and it's reminded me how cool the series is.
My favourite was probably the 2nd book, though the others are great too. I had a maths exam the day after Eternity Code came out, but I spent the whole day reading EC instead of revising, I was so gripped!
Foaly is the best character. :p I think we should all wear tinfoil hats in his honour.
Is anybody else a bit dubious about there being a 4th book in the series? Only the ending of Eternity Code just seems to finish the series off so perfectly- not entirely 'complete', but giving us that reassurance that Artemis's sneakiness will win the day, and he's bound to get his memory back. I'm just worried that with Artemis getting more emotional in each book, we're going to end up losing his essential nastiness.

The Artemis Fowl Files
No, this is not a sequel to the previous titles; it's a companion book. It includes two original short stories, one a prequel to Artemis Fowl (the first) about Captain Holly Short and how she became a member of the LEP, and the other a story about Artemis looking for the Fei Fei Tiara (Seventh Dwarf). In it, readers see Mulch working with Artemis for the first time. There are also games; readers can practice fairy code, learn the gnomish alphabet, do a crossword puzzle or a find-a-word (the latter may cause problems in libraries). Finally, they can read interviews with Artemis, Captain Short, Butler, Mulch Diggums, Foaly, Commander Root, and the author. With the write-in caveat in mind, this volume will give all of those Fowler fans something to read while waiting for the next book.–Saleena L. Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception
Criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl is back…and so is his cunning enemy from Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident, Opal Koboi. At the start of the fourth adventure, Artemis has returned to his unlawful ways. He's in Berlin, preparing to steal a famous impressionist painting from a German bank. He has no idea that his old rival, Opal, has escaped from prison by cloning herself. She's left her double behind in jail and, now free, is exacting her revenge on all those who put her there, including Artemis.
