Have you checked the HP Lexicon (http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/index.html) It's the most complete HP site I know of.

You beat me to it, symplet! I was going to link to the HP Lexicon!

Anna, it is a really great site, and will give you more info than you need for your project. Good luck, and have fun!

Wow, wish we could do essays about Harry Potter, but, no. It's short stories. "I'm Sorry Mrs Baxter"...

Oh, and both of you got there before me ... darn! :p

well, thanx for the site. We just finished watching HP (the hundreath time for me) for film studies.

I'm having trouble with Activites and Facilities. Can't seem to grab them.

Anyone know where the entrance to the Hufflepuff Dorms and Common room is/what?

Thanx again!!

I don't know that but I just wanted to suggest mention of the large body of house elves waiting on the school.

Facilities... facilities... I'm not sure if it is a facility when the word makes me think only of bathrooms but there's the owlery for postal needs.
There's also a spare chamber somewhere abouts large enough for the needs of your pet basilisk.

On that note, activity wise, there's all that annual peril to flee from :D

Facilities:

Olympic sized Quidditch pitch

Extensive Library

Exclusive third corridor perfect for hiding the occassional secret yet life

There's a forest for any other dangerous pets. And the Whomping Willow could be useful for anything you want to hide. The Great Hall is a wonderful venue for banquets, balls, etc, and there are over 100 house elves to cater for your needs (unless you have ethical objections).

Activities (???)

Of course there's always the possible formation of the Harry Potter Fan Club by Colin and Ginny. :p

It sounds like a travel brochure...

"... and in the evenings the hundreds of on staff house elfs will serve dinner in the cavernous Great Hall..."

lol!

And Cat, I love the annual flee from peril... classic

Theres also the hunted bathroom of Moaning Myrtle, students aviod it as does any other creature at Hogwarts. If you are lucky you might just catch of glimpse of the famous Harry Potter and his friends sneaking in to get away. Myrtle has been known for her obnoxious whinning and can be seen residing in the u-bind of the stall that she died in, however the manner of her death is unknow to many that roam the hollow halls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardery.

Know I've lost it!!!

For Activities:

There's Hogsmeade trips for those who are allowed
There's the Dueling club Lockhart started, if that counts
Extra-curicular lessons (i.e. Lupin's Expecto Patrnum)
If it counts, the Triwizard Tournament
Quidditch (Playing & Watching)
um... I'm trying to think of all the non-educational things they've ever had at Hogwarts...
Feasts, like at Hallowe'en
Deathday parties for the ghosts, for the specially invited
Two words- Yule Ball (a third word - disaster;))
what else...
Parties in the common rooms...
Ok, I'm starting to stretch my luck here... if I think of anything else, I'll post again!

Quidditch is an Olympic sport?

Anna - the precise whereabouts of the Hufflepuff Common Room has not been divulged. I have a feeling that it is down a staircase off the main hall, near the kitchens, but I'm not sure. I'm sure if you "creatively embellished" (ie lied) your teacher wouldn't know the difference.

It's jsut an olympic sized quidditch pitch. The size of an Olympic pitch.

For facilities, there's the Hospital Wing. The changing rooms for Quidditch. A vast kitchen with 100 house elves doing work. An extensive library. Classrooms. Green Houses. Dungeons for locking up bad students. A quidditch pitch. A lake. Offices for the teachers. Dormitories.
Astronomy towers. A lake. A forest where you can find potion ingredients.

Hello, everybody!

I hope Im writing this at the right place...if not excuse me.

Well, I need to interview Harry potter fans for a school project ( We had to read a book, then analize it and interview some people to get thier opinion and then write a book review of the book...so I chose GOF!) so I couldnt think of any better place to interview than here! Plz answer the following questions (anyone can answer and i will pick up some ) :

1)your age and sex.
2)when did you first read a HP book and which book was it?
3)What's your fav. HP book?
4)which character would you relate most to yourself?
5)what do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?
6)what do you think about Jk rowling?
7)Anything else you wannna say?

Thanks in advance to anyone who answers me, you dont know how much it means to me and my project. :)

October 2001, PS/SS.

3)What's your fav. HP book?

PoA

4)which character would you relate most to yourself?

Hermione for being the sensible level headed one.

5)what do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?

I enjoyed it, although I still like number 3 better. GoF get's darker, which I like. I think I'll like it even more once OotP comes out, because then I will understand (sort off) what some parts mean.

6)what do you think about Jk rowling?

JK Rowling is a genius. That's all that needs to be said.

7)Anything else you wannna say?

1999 PS

3)What's your fav. HP book?
Which ever I read most recently. Currently GoF

4)which character would you relate most to yourself?
I have alot of Hermione in me. I can often hear me in her when she goes "It says so in Hogwarts, a history". Except in my case it would normally be "I read it on the bbc website"

5)what do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?
It is a good book. Alot more complicated than the first three. I like the fact that you are never quite sure who is behind everything.

6)what do you think about Jk rowling?
I like her books but I don't know her.

7)Anything else you wannna say?
I really like the way that JKR takes mythology and twists it. It is still regognisable but just wrong. It makes it seem that even when we muggles see something from the magical world we don't interpret it correctly.

hello again, everyone!
Thanks a lot for the replies , i really appreciate each and every one :) and are there no male fans around here? We need more male fans plz :)

zora_domina
March 7th, 2003, 3:30 am
((Sorry I'm not male, but here goes anyway!!))

1)your age and sex.
-- 35 and Female

2)when did you first read a HP book and which book was it?
-- January 2003
-- The four book softcover set, so I read PS/SS first

3)What's your fav. HP book?
-- So far that would be PoA

4)which character would you relate most to yourself?
-- I know this will sound weird, but Professor McGonnagal. She's quite like me, really. I'm often seen as a bit stern, but commanding because of experience. I love to see young kids succeed at things they are good at - so I often encourage them to do what they're happy with/having fun with, rather like she was so happy to find a new Seeker for her House's team. I do take myself way too seriously.

5)what do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?
-- I thought it was the best *written* work, but not my favorite. It certainly was a wild ride, very well done, but with a few quirky problems in style (the 'I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for these meddling kids' theory of "explain everything via dialog rather than by writing out scenes and flashbacks" kind of bothers me).

6)what do you think about Jk rowling?
-- She's amazing. I truly look up to her as a writer and fan. She's only 2 years older than I am, and is THE RICHEST WOMAN IN ENGLAND. She's got hundreds of millions of fans. Plus she's pretty, and has a nice little family started. What a woman!!

7)Anything else you wannna say?
It's nice to see that people are assigning real-world type information gathering for classes these days. Please keep us updated as to your classwork and this project!!!

1)your age and sex.

2)when did you first read a HP book and which book was it?

1997, I think. My friend came back from a year in England and lent me her copy of Philosopher's Stone.

3)What's your fav. HP book?

PoA? I love them all!

4)which character would you relate most to yourself?

a young Arabella Figg

5)what do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?

excellent, but it would've been better if i wasn't stuck waiting for the other side of the cliffhanger.

6)what do you think about Jk rowling?

seems ok. good humoured, superb storyteller. a little sadistic (OotP)

7)Anything else you wannna say?

sorry I'm not male for your survey.

Silk E Smooth
March 7th, 2003, 4:55 am
1)your age and sex.
22, Female

2)when did you first read a HP book and which book was it?
I first read SS 2 years ago. The very next week I bought the other books.

3)What's your fav. HP book?
My favorite would have to be CoS. I think it's the most humorous with the addition of Lockhart and Colin Creevy. I also think CoS is good because it's one of the most mystery of the books. It ends with a lot of unanswered questions.

4)which character would you relate most to yourself?
I relate to Harry a lot. I can understand the feeling of coming from a hopeless world and entering into a world of possibilities. That's how I felt about the transaction from leaving my home to go off to college. But I relate most with Ginny Weasley. I'm the youngest redheaded girl in a family full of boys. We are also a very poor family. And I totally relate to the whole hopeless crush thing.

5)what do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?
GoF is definitely a turning point in the series. I think that it's last book to sets up the story leaving nothing but answers in future books. I enjoyed the Yule Ball, seeing love interests bloom. The ending was very exciting and always surprising.

6)what do you think about Jk rowling?
She's a marvel. It's amazing to think that she thought this story up herself and draws from all the sources she uses.

7)Anything else you wannna say?
I like that this is a class assignment. More schools should assign Harry Potter. It's deep and teaches so many lessons, both literary and life lessons. It works on most grade levels. Even college level.

Holy cow, I'm the first guy here!

Your age and sex.
I am 21 and a guy.

When did you first read a HP book and which book was it?
Maybe a month or two ago, and the first I read (I got th first three at the same time) was PS.

What's your fav. HP book?
GoF.

Which character would you relate most to yourself?
Tough one. A cross between Hermione's intelligence and the twins' diabolical frivolousness, I think.

What do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?
I liked it. Nice and complex, the way I like books to be written, with that delightful unforseen twist at the end. And Voldemort returns! Horray!

What do you think about Jk rowling?
She possesses talent.

Not true. One forum I frequent has a higher male population than female, and another (a programming forum) has no females at all. At least, none that are willing to admit they are female.

I frequent this other forum of which CaptainNick speaks, and the guys most definately out number the girls, although there are more girls now than there were when I first started posting there three years ago.

Back in the mid-nineties, it was almost all guys everywhere. Now that the sexes are pretty equal in number on the 'net, and women are (let's face it) way more chatty, I imagine boards that aren't really guy centric by their nature are going to have more females than males.

I post at a wedding board and there are maybe 5 guys out of the thousands that post there. I suspect those 5 guys are either closeted gays or on a leash.

Meh. I can think of at least one forum there where the girls tend to outnumber the guys.

Anyway:

1) 19 year old female
2) Can't remember exactly. I think it was toward the end of my sophomore year in high school (about 4 years ago?)
3) Chamber of Secrets, which will probably throw off your statistics. I think I'm the only person who ever answers that. (*looks back through thread*--Oh, cool. I'm not.)
4) Hermione. I wrote one of my college essays around that comparison. (Got waitlisted, but I don't think it was because of that.)
5) Impressively taut, for such a long piece. It did get a bit preachy toward the end, but I can forgive that.
6) She's an inspiration to me as a writer: not necessarily in terms of style, but in subject matter and conviction.
7) No, I think that's it.

1)your age and sex. 16/f
2)when did you first read a HP book and which book was it? i read the first one only about 1 year ago
3)What's your fav. HP book? Prisoner of Azkaban only just beats GoF
4)which character would you relate most to yourself? Ron because of the making sarcastic comments and being kinda loud having a lot of siblings having 2 very close friends one very smart the other great at most things.only difference is i'm not a guy.
5)what do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"? I think it is great i like the lack of Quiditch and the new tri-wizard tournament althugh i only like the idea for one book as a break from the quiditch obsession wich was the same through all of the first 3 books, it is just completely brilliant and made me desperate for thefifth book.
6)what do you think about Jk rowling? I think she is brilliant to have come up with the whole Idea and she's a great writer and her books made me want to write.
7)Anything else you wannna say?
Harry Potter is brilliant can't wait for the next book

I probably have a stupid idea for dialogue but I'll try. Maybe something like
Did you hear that some religions have banned Harry Potter including the churches
Really?But why.
Because they think that Harry Potter encourages witchcraft being taught to young children!
But Harry Potter is just a children's book. It shouldn't be taken seriously and there have been no recorded cases of children actually learning witchcraft because of the books
That's not all. People have gone as far as to ban Harry Potter from their libraries, communities, and they have had book burnings!

Extremely of no help to you and I think maybe I broke one of the guidelines for making the dialogue. Sorry maybe someone else can be of better help

1)your age and sex: 18, Female

2)when did you first read a HP book and which book was it?: a bit after it came out, I read the Sorcerer's Stone

3)What's your fav. HP book? Prisoner of Azkaban

4)which character would you relate most to yourself? Ron; I'm pretty sarcastic sometimes, and I'm VERY afraid of spiders.... but I also relate alot to Gred and Forge.

5)what do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"? It's my second favorite book, and it really shows how much the kids are growing up. It's a REALLY good book.

6)what do you think about Jk rowling? I think she's has an amazing talent, and she uses it VERY well. I hope to meet her one day and tell her how much I appriciate her and her writing!

Ok, Hope this helps..it's not exactly a dialogue, but you can manage :).

Harry Potter. Just the name alone stirrs controversy.
Some people believe he is a product of a demonic posession of an English woman, JK Rowling. But there's the group of people who don't believe in the books of being dark, but being an enjoyable past time that transports you to Hogwarts and its magical sorroundings. It makes you wish your name was Harry.
All the points of views clash and make one of the greatest ironies of times: Kids are actually reading while some grown-ups don't want them to be....well, at least HP. This book ahs sold more copies than the bible, and every 2 minute a Harry Potter book is bought, which means people aruond the globe are reading more.
JK Rowling's use of words is superb, she draws perfect pictures in your mind - scenery, characters, objects, moods - all, without giving too much information.
In conclusion, The harry Potter series might be a product of Satan, but it surely is making kidsaround the world expand thier vocabulary and reading, which in the future, pays off.

Actually Melissa Potter I thought that was very good. All that's needed now is a few more questions and a few more answers and you'll be ready!
BTW Mellissa, you have to many pictures in you're sig, you're only allowed one;)

Just wanted to edit and say that Triki's very good aswell. There seems to be a 'why people think HP is bad' thing going on, and 'why it's actually good'.

2)when did you first read a HP book and which book was it?
I first read one in seventh grade (1999) and it was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

3)What's your fav. HP book?
Well I think they are getting better and better... Book Four was really good but I think my most favorite would be the 3rd one!

4)which character would you relate most to yourself?
Well The Weasley Twins because I do have a great sense of humor and maybe a little bit of Hermione because I'm smart (but not in a know-it-all way!)

5)what do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?
It was absolutely fantastic! So much happened and I can't wait until Book Five comes out!

You could talk about how the books value bravery, loyalty, friendship, teamwork, *choosing between what's right and what's easy*, the power of love - could do it as another counter-point to the *satanspawn books* argument.

And as a response to the "religions banning it" point - well if it's outselling the bible are you suprised they want to see it as a cultish thing? It doesnt sound as good does it? "The bible has sold millions of copies world-wide, second only to Harry Potter - a childrens' series"! If they can argue convinvingly that the books are bad then they're number 1 again!

I've just merged several threads to create this centralised, general thread for anyone doing a project on the "Harry Potter" book series or films. Please feel free to ask any questions pertaining to the content of your assignment, or if you need participants to answer a survey post your questions here. Do not start individual threads for your particular assignment; we should be able to answer all of your queries here.

Edit: I forgot to request that once your assignment has been completed, please let us know in this thread. That way we won't have people trying to help you with a project that was due three months ago.

2) When did you first read a HP book and which book was it?
I first read a Harry Potter book in 2000 and it was the first book.

3) What's your fav. HP book?
It would have to be Goblet of Fire for me it's on an entirely different level to the rest of the series.

4) Which character would you relate most to yourself?
There is no one character that I relate to but a mix of many, Hermione for here desire to learn, Harry for his determination and loyalty, Ron for being overshadowed and the twins for their humour.

5) What do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?
It's probably the best book that I have ever read and without doubt the best Harry Potter book.

6) What do you think about JK Rowling?
I think she is a great role model for every young lady. She's successful because she worked at it and deserves all the acclaim that she receives.

1) Your age and sex?
21 and female

2) When did you first read a HP book and which book was it?
Philosopher's Stone, two years ago

3) What's your fav. HP book?
Prisoner of Azkaban, though GoF is excellent

4) Which character would you relate most to yourself?
Hermione, because I love books and am constantly spouting obscure background information

5) What do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?
It's an excellent book - the extended length helps to expand the characters and setting, and the story is exciting and emotional.

6) What do you think about JK Rowling?
She's a very imaginative and attentive writer and sounds like a nice person too!

On the question about HP's appeal to adults and children:
I think it's because the stories that Harry uncovers are interesting for people of all ages while still being simple enough for children to understand; the characters are easy to relate to; the magical setting is fun for children and nostalgic escapism for adults.

I'd also say that JKR makes things as simple as possible but no simpler (as Einstein said) - the plots and issues aren't oversimplified.

1)your age and sex.

2)when did you first read a HP book and which book was it?
The next day after I saw HPSS in the theatre on opening night. I started with SS and read all the way through GoF by Christmas.
3)What's your fav. HP book?
PoA, hands down. I couldn't put it down.
4)which character would you relate most to yourself?
Severus Snape, because I think that his bitterness as an adult stems from being outcast as a child/teenager due to being very intelligent. I understand him, because that's how I feel sometimes.
5)what do you think about the book "harry potter and the goblet of fire"?
I think we really learned a lot more about several of the characters we've known for the entier series thus far. The plot was a lot darker than any of the other books, but I enjoyed it just the same.
6)what do you think about Jk rowling?
I think she's a genius who deserves every literary award there is.
7)Anything else you wannna say?
Nope. :)

5) Ah! The hours of fun I spent reading that! Wonderful, it's great to see the characters growing up.
6) Wonderful author, she's splendid at looking after the smallest little details.

HP is something both adults and children can enjoy. There doesn't seem to be an age where someone just loses interest in it. I suppose it's because JK wrote mainly to amuse herself, but at the same time amuse her daughter. There maybe jokes that younger readers don't see but still they can still find most of the book funny.

(4)Which character would you relate most to yourself?
Hermione
(5)What do you think about the book "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"?
An amazing book, a bit long, but well worth reading. Plus the ending is terrific.
(6)What do you think about Jk Rowling?
She's a genius.
(7)Anything else you wannna say?
Despite the stereotype, HP is not just for 8 year olds.
(8)What is it about the HP books that makes you like them so much?
Probably the way every little detail is important, every little thing could turn out to be a major plot twist later on. And how JKR intertwines fact, myth, and her imagination.

>>Okay, guys. Another nosy question for my oral: What about the HP books that make u like them so much? Is it the characters? The simple storyline ? What, what, what? Tell me!<<

For me, I love the ease of reading - it's not "simple" in any way. The characters are fully fleshed, very realistic, the plotline is to say the least "complicated" yet, the books themselves are written in a style that is very easy and quick to read. Other novels I just don't want to spend the time worrying about how they mean one word or another - JKR gets down to it and actually just says what's going on. I like that.

Okay one of my holiday assignment is very very very simple. It's SO simple you could kill me for asking for help in here. All i need to do is to read a book(what book could POSSIBLY be my choice?! ) and write a review about it, minimum 200 words.

I almost freaked out when my teacher said that. I immediately thought I could write a review on OOTP...I'll be like, the very first person in the world to do a school assignment on OOTP! :elaugh:

But then I thought maybe I wouldn't have much time left cos holiday ends on June 29th and if you know me very well, I'll usually do homework at the very last minute ;)

I've planned to do a review on POA. What are the important things about POA that I should write in my review? Any ideas? Any tips? Help will be very much appreciated! :)

Sherlock Holmes
June 5th, 2003, 6:51 pm
If I were you:

1. Briefly summarize the plot (a few sentences). 200 words isn't much space.
2. Analyze the plot: did it make sense?
3. Point out inconsistencies/plot holes, if you see any.
4. Conclude with a few statements about why the HP series, and PoA in particular is so popular. Is it just a passing fad, or is it really good, quality literature?

Good luck! :)

Puffskein
June 5th, 2003, 9:05 pm
If you can find space, you should explain what's so great about the book, say a bit about the characters and how they develop, and say a bit about the themes (loyalty, injustice, depression etc).

I hope this is the right place to post this but I'd really like everyone's help but move it if needed.

Okay for my negotiated studies at school that I'm doing and a part of what I want to do is talk about why it's so popular and why people like it etc.

Can people possibly fill out this for me, it would be a great help! It would be nice if you could be alittle detailed if you answer and not just a sentence or two.

Name: For the sake of my writing.
Age: To help with statistics and it appeal to different ages.
Why the Harry Potter Series appeal to you?: What particular themes draw you in, what connections do you have with the book, etc, etc, please be as detailed as you can be and include anything that you want!
What themes interest you the most?: Themes from the whole series and how have they sucked you in.
In your opinion why do you think Harry Potter is so popular?:This is is your opinion.
your age or peer group affected the way you like Harry Potter?: this sounds like an odd question but it helps.
Who is your favourite character and why?: Please be detailed on this and don't just say because he's hot. Is there anything that you can relate with, role model, inspiration, etc.

Thanks for helping!

Ok Vinilla Dream

Name: :eyebrows: Kathryn I guess

Age:  15

Why the Harry Potter Series appeal to you?: Ok, well id go for the friendship. You can also sympathyse with some of the characters who get picked on or have trouble with sibblings and family. (this is a hard question never really thought about it before Alot of it is the story but theres also alot in the way JK writes)

What themes interest you the most?: The whole danger thing

In your opinion why do you think Harry Potter is so popular? Imagination, the excellent writing style....

has your age or peer group affected the way you like Harry Potter? Well i have friends who like (or are majorly obsessed) with harry potter, but i liked it before them so not really, although they did get me hooked on visiting the harry potter sites online. I do have another friend who gets annoyed when we continuiously continue to discuss harry potter (Gof had just come out), but we outnumber her so no it doesnt affect me  .

Who is your favourite character and why?: Well Sirius (cause he is funny, mischevious etc) Lupin (caring, kind, gentle, cool, entertaining and he knows Defence against the dark arts) And after reading GOF id say dumbledore (he seriously rules, is calm no matter what, is poweful and has style....) oh and hermione

hope this helped :p

Well, the reason I loved Harry Potter was because of all the characters, the scenery (the way j.k described it), all of the spells and hexes and how its appropriate for all ages to read...plus, im a fantasy lover

Hi! I'm doing a project and I'd love if anyone could respond as soon as possible to this question:

Why do you like Harry Potter? What makes it special from other novels?

Thanks a bunch! :)

It 's one of the few books which really fires my imagination in such a way that I really feel I know the characters, and understand the world.

Oh, and it's one of the few books in which I have an overwhelming crush on one of the characters, to the point of neing utterly overwhelmed with longing for him. Always fun :)

(feel free to PM me if you want to ask any more (but bear in mind I'll be offline for a week starting tomorrow)

I was just wondering, In Hogwarts no one can apparate, right, but remmeber Dobby apparated there when he went to see harry, how can that be?( I think it was in book 2)

I think everyone has come to the conclution that Dobby has the ability to apparate in Hogwarts because he has a different ability of magic then what wizards do. I hope that makes some sense.

I'm doing a persuasive speech called "Harry Potter Is Not Evil" about how the books aren't bad and shouldn't be banned from schools and libraries. If anybody has any ideas, arguments, or knows of any articles or anything that would be useful, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks!! :)

There is nothing in HP that is evil. The only reason people believe that HP is evil is because of the witch/wizard thing. Many mainstream religions have spread rumors that witches and wizards are devil worshipers and are anti-christs. Basically anything that goes against the religions beliefs is consided evil even if its not.

undefinedOkay, well, this is my first post, I'm really new to these web postings and stuff. First of all I'd like to say that
Harry Potter is the biggest childhood book series of all time, and whenever someone succeeds at something there are always going to be people who try and bring you down. It's like Dumbledore himself said to Hagrid when Hagrid was upset about being half giant. "If your waiting for universal popularity, you're going to be in this cabing for a long time." I read an article online once that this woman wrote about how Harry Potter is terrible and teaches kids to be satanists.(i'm sorry I can't find the link for you) However, never ever once in any of the books do I hear a mention about Satan, Harry Potter is not meant to be religious, if anything comes close to satan its Voldemort, and the books are about how everyone hates him and how harry fights him and wins all the time. The book is about a young boy who was unpopular most of his life and suddenly finds great friends and has to overcome difficult obstacles in life, like we all must do. I feel it is directed to all the kids who may not have lots of friends, the "nerds" if you will, trying to give them hope. Give them hope that you can do whatever you set your mind to, and somewhere out there there are people just like you and you will find them and they will be your best friends. The Harry Potter books are not meant to be religious i dont' think, but just meant to be entertaining and I suppose that is why they are categorized as "children's books" because children do seem to have a much bigger and better imagination and appreciation of things than some adults do...especially ones that want to poison the minds of young children who like reading Harry Potter because they think its a wonderful series, with stories of satan and all of that utter rubbish. I don't know if any of this helps, I just felt like going on a rant...sorry! =)

Okay, it's not really homework- but it is schoolwork.

There's going to be an essay contest at my school. The subject is "A Day In the Life of..."

You can do a real person, a fictional character, or one from your own mind. I want to do HP, naturally. And I want to do a girl. Either Hermione Granger, Lavender Brown, Parvati Patil, Ginny Weasley, or Luna Lovegood.

Here are my pros and cons:

Hermione- We know enough about her to do it, but I think it would be kind of boring.

Lavender- She'd be really fun, but we don't know much about her.

Parvati- Same for Lavender, but she has a twin.

Ginny- We know enough about her, and she's cool. Hmm....

Luna- She's so cool! But we don't know much about her.

Ideas?

[EDIT]

Um...I need to write my essay now. Thanks for any help.

Are you a Harry Potter Fan?

My name is Ericka and I need FANS HELP! I'm working on a paper for class and I need fan support, so if you would please take a few moments and answer these questions in complete sentences!

1. What grade are you in? ( I need a different range of age groups, and I thought it would be rude to ask your age so I thought grade would be a nice way to put it)

2. Who is your favorite character and why? (please don't base it on looks, like Mafloy because Tom is hott or harry because dan is hott)

3. Which book is your favorite? Why?

4. Should Harry Potter be allowed in the classroom? Why or Why not?

5. Do your parents think by reading Harry Potter or watching it is bad?

6. Why do you read Harry Potter?

7. Which character can you most relate to? Why?

8. Can the characters of Harry Potter be related to kids you know? How and why? ( like the way people act, is there a Harry or Malfoy in your school or work)

9. Just for fun what's your favorite scene/line for the book or movie?

Now if you have parents or know any adults that have read or seen the movies then please get them to do it! Adults I need your input too! Email the answers to: hppaper04@yahoo.com

What grade are you in?

I am in the sixth grade

Who is your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is Neville Longbottom (He's so sweet! Even after all he's been through...) or Luna Lovegood (She's very misunderstood).

Which book is your favorite? Why?

I love Chamber of Secrets, it explains a lot.

Should Harry Potter be allowed in the classroom? Why or Why not?

It [Harry Potter] should be allowed in the classroom, it's a terrific reading experience for children.

Do your parents think by reading Harry Potter or watching it is bad?

My parents love Harry Potter, too.

Why do you read Harry Potter?

I read Harry Potter because I saw the first two movies, read an article about the 5th book coming out, so I decided to read them.

Which character can you most relate to? Why?

I can most relate to either Neville Longbottom (He's always been made fun of, but that's because no one except his best friends really know him), or Luna Lovegood (She's absolutely crazy.). You'll also not that they're my favorite characters in the series.

Can the characters of Harry Potter be related to kids you know? How and why?

I can draw parallels between my best (guy) friend and Ron Weasley. He's so funny, but so stubborn!

Just for fun what's your favorite scene/line for the book or movie?

Umm, my favorite scene from the Harry Potter books or movies is, "The Dementors send their love, Potter!" from Draco Malfoy in Book 3.

PS: Welcome to the Forums, have a great time!

1. What grade are you in? ( I need a different range of age groups, and I thought it would be rude to ask your age so I thought grade would be a nice way to put it)
Grade 10... in Canada that's the third year of high school :).

2. Who is your favorite character and why? (please don't base it on looks, like Mafloy because Tom is hott or harry because dan is hott)
Dumbledore. He is the height of all things pure and good... he is an incredible wizard and treats his students wonderfully. Every piece of literature has their kind, grandfatherly type (who can also do some serious damage in the name of goodness), and Harry Potter's in Dumbledore.

3. Which book is your favorite? Why?
Order of the Phoenix... basically, I like them all for different reasons. OotP is the longest, showed a very realistic side of Harry, and JKR wasn't afraid to write about "controversial" subjects... like deaths in childrens books.

4. Should Harry Potter be allowed in the classroom? Why or Why not?
No. I used to be one of those people who thought Harry Potter promoted devil worship. After I've read the books, I've realized that's not the case at all. However, if I did still think that way, I would want people to respect that. In grade seven, my teacher wanted to read HP to us, and I was really nervous about it. I wasn't comfortable reading the books (I later did, obviously), and I don't like the idea of others being put in that position. Witchcraft is, whether we like it or not, a controversial topic for a books series, and I don't think kids should be made to read it/hear about it in school.

5. Do your parents think by reading Harry Potter or watching it is bad?
My grandparents do. My parents were a little sketchy about the whole witchcraft thing at first, but they respected my decision to read the books a first time around to see what the real deal was, and they know I wouldn't read them if I thought there was something wrong with reading them.

6. Why do you read Harry Potter?
I love the books. The characters are great, the plot is great, I just can't explain it perfectly... there's just something that I get hooked on. I just can't wait to see what happens to everyone, what the ending is going to be like... it's a great piece of writing.

7. Which character can you most relate to? Why?
Probably Hermione... we're both willing to do almost anything for school (I'd take a Time-Turner to take 12 classes a day anytime!) and we're both adventurous, but not overly adventurous.

8. Can the characters of Harry Potter be related to kids you know? How and why? ( like the way people act, is there a Harry or Malfoy in your school or work)
I suppose almost any character in any book can be related to someone... otherwise there wouldn't be that character, if you know what I mean. I think every school has a Malfoy. Mine certainly has one... or two... or ten... and Harry is the typical kid who has a knack for getting into trouble!

9. Just for fun what's your favorite scene/line for the book or movie?
I loved when Dumbledore cried in front of Harry... and I loved every scene with Umbridge... I thought she was absolutely fantastic... horrible and evil, she made me want to tear my book in half... that's when you know a villian is really well-written... when you could almost feel yourself socking her one in the nose!

So, I'm doing a 'research project' on Harry Potter for one of my classes this quarter, and I wanted to discuss and explore WHY people are so drawn to the HP series. I am totally addicted to the books as well, and I think it's interesting hearing people's reasons for loving HP.
So, any replies would be greatly appreciated!!

Well in a nutshell it is something I can identify with (for the most part). A lot of people will say that it is an escape from reality, but I am a lot like Harry. Not only does HP widen your imagination horizons, but it teaches you moral lessons and it teaches you about yourself. Take the sorting for example, by choosing your house and taking sorting tests you discover who you truly are. It helps me get through the pain of reality, dealing with bullies and loss. A few quotes by Dumbledore have turned into my mottos and they help me through hard times; "It is our choices that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities." and "To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure."

Personally the reason why i love Harry Potter is because it is an escape from reality, however it is a believeable escape from reality. J.K.Rowling wrote it so convincingly i even believed that when I was goibng into secondary, i was expecting a letter from Hogwarts. Also i have always been interested in witchcraft (hence the name The_Wicca). Even though Harry Potter doesn't have a lot in Magic, it is basically just the concept that J.K.Rowling bases it all around, i still love it. Really i don't know why i like it, because really it is a mystery and detecive story, and i hate most of those stories, but when it comes to Harry Potter i just can't help myself, it constantly just pulls me in. Also i think that you can relate to it all. Most of the probelms that the trio go through most teenagers are going through. I mean there is always that teacher in the school that absolutly despises you, that person who makes you feel uneasy, and always makes fun of you. And it also has tons of great quotes, like SilverStar04, ever since i read it, i have always loved "To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure." quote, it just makes so much sense!

How l do I love Potter? Let me count the ways... :rotfl:

1. JK wrote a nice couple of children's books for the first two, the last two were good books for the older fantasy crowd... But POA was pure genius. She writes beyond herself as she combines the best of the two worlds creating a book that is enjoyable for both parents and children. It is also a great read the first time and the second time, as we believe in the seriousness of the Snape/map encounter the first time, and understand the joke the second.

2. She has done for fantasy what Michael Crichon did for sifi. She put magic, he dinosaurs, back into our world in a completely believable way. This is something that hasn't happened for fantasy in a long time. In fact I'm going on a limb here to say that the last believable works of fantasy are Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings," and Peter S. Begal's "The Last Unicorn." The last two concern the fantasy of our past and Rowling has now brought magic and fantasy back into our present and future. How fun!

3. JK doesn't insult the intellegence of the reader. She doesn't talk down to the children and up to the adults. We all have equal footing in her imagination. She gives us plenty of "mind candy," to speculate and drool over. Some of it will end up being as fluffy and useless as candy floss, but some will be very satisfying sweets.

The main reason I enjoy Harry Potter is the same reason so many of us pick up books every day, go to the movies or play video games - we need an escape from our everyday lives. I need reassurance sometimes that what I live is not all there is to life.

I've also been very impressed by the magnitude to which Harry Potter has been able to reach out to young kids who might not even like to read, or have never picked up a book on their own to read for pleasure. Kids need to read, anything and everything, as it is proven the most effective way to enhance verbal and written language skills. I have a sister, who, prior to reading Harry Potter, could count the books she's read outside of school on one hand. Harry Potter has helped her enter a world of books and expose her to the different types of literature available. It shows kids that there is more to reading than being assigned a book in class and encourages them to read more and fine new books to engage themselves in. Harry Potter has not only been valuable on an individual basis but on reaching youth all over the globe and bringing the invaluable lessons of written books back into their lives.

Personally I like Harry Potter because it creates some kind of paralel world where your mind could fly, and daydream about... a wonderful way to escape, and a delightful read... the way JRK draws the magic world, situations, locations making it believeable and flow in a natural way, and a nice feeling of being identified with many points of the personalities of the characters... they are authentic, "human", with their virtues and their faults, and normal reactions anyone of us would have in our normal lifes...

I also like the way she drops clues, references, little things almost unnoticeable, that suddenly get importance on the next books, making the reader wonder, think, trying to find out what will happen... that suspense is under my point of view where resides a very important part of the "magic" of Harry Potter...

I like Harry Potter because of its many layers, each which can stir a reader and make them endearing. A child can read it for one thing, while an adult can read it for another, and each can have a dramatic impact on a person. In simple terms, it is a wonderful, fantastical story about magic, good vs. evil, flying on broomsticks, and battling dragons, trolls, and spiders. These awesome gimmicks can suck you in to an alternative reality that seems so much more interesting than the one we live in. Yet to a more mature or advanced reader, it can mean so much more, and the books can strike a person much more personally. It deals with issues of abandonment and loneliness, closely associated with figuring out who you really are and what you believe in. What person doesn't dream of waking up one day and finding out where you actually belong? It does not gloss over deaths or the experience of grief and loss. It deals with struggles to maintain hope and righteousness in the face of the dangerous unknown. It addresses issues of prejudice and hatred in the world. It emphasizes the power of friendship and love in living a happy life. It shows how people can learn and grow with time. All these kinds of issues, intricately woven into a totally interesting story make me love the power of these stories and the depth they behold.

I love the Harry Potter series for its richness in trivial little details, its cast of memorable characters, the playful wit, its barmy sense of humour, the depths of the themes and the many layers in its twisty plot. I love how it's not about some mystical and wonderful magical utopia, but about a community that, the more you scrutinise it, the more it comes to resemble our own reality. Sometimes you wish that you could simply wave a wand, cast a spell, and fix the world. But Harry Potter has a wand and the world's still broken. We've been introduced to numerous 'baddies' and not all of them are living things.

I don't try to 'escape' through Harry Potter. That would be like jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire - a fire with iron spikes and giant venemous snakes in it. Harry's existence is far worse than mine! But he is fascinating to watch. Some authors, though they may write beautifully, fail to establish any kind of emotion from reader to character. When Harry eats his breakfast I can taste it, with the help of J. K. Rowling describing every sausage. When he's angry, I'm angry too. When he's nervous or frightened I often have to remind myself that I'm not breathing. When he's playing Quidditch, I soar.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix had me crying - literally weeping - over the death of a person that never really existed. That has never happened to me before. J. K. Rowling brought it out of me with only the power of words and story-telling.

Now that's what I call good writing.

I am a church elder, and was concerned regarding the "witchcraft" charges with which we are all familiar. I do not like to allow others to think for me, and so I read the first book. I found it innocent fun, this generation's set of Oz books. However, the foreshadowing in the books, clues as to what lays ahead, is quite thought provoking. Adventure, discovery, mystery, wry humor, and multidimensional characters all involved in their own subplots send the story in many directions at once.
Any venture which is a huge financial success is beset from all sides, and this one is no exception, but none of the critics who call this "unoriginal" seems to be able to say where Harry Potter is headed...

Why do I love it?

- Multi-dimensional characters
- Unpredictable and unique storyline
- Excellent foreshadowing and plot devices
- Great use of characters and comedy
- Malfoy as a ferret

That's pretty much all I can list from the top of my head.

Eee, I can't think of many reasons NOT to love Harry Potter...

Funniness, originality, magic, adventure, an owl - who could ask for anything more in a book? I think HP is so accessible to everyone, young and old, and everyone gets something different from the books, you know? I think children's literature has been sort of a cesspool of boredom for so long now (obviously classics like the Chronicles of Narnia and so forth are exceptions, but there's not much in the way of modern stuff) that when HP came along it was just like putting imagination back into reading!

I first started reading HP when I was about fifteen or so - I'd given up on kid's books when I was about nine, and was, frankly, a 'literary snob' - I would rarely read anything that had been written after 1950. So I was reluctant to read HP... But then I finally did, just so I knew what all the fuss was about.

It was just so great and interesting and relieving to read something so new and involving! Can't thank you enough, JK! :)

I love Harry Potter because it's a story of an orphaned boy, magic, friendship, loyalty, maybe a little romance, and finding out who you are when you don't know what makes you so famous. And I think that all of these ideas that JKR had was really inspiring. And she made such a brilliant novel and i just can't wait to read the rest of the series or maybe even more of her work. Plus, there's a form of predjudice and hate for mudbloods (Slytherins) and it's interesting to see what the characters JKR had made deal with there problems and differences. Especially those who are bound to fall in love.

what i'd suggest you do is write down some quick character sketches for maybe three of the people you named. what they're like, how they act, why they act that way etc.

what might be fun to do with one of the lesser characters such as lavender, is do one of the 'important' days from one of the books, but from her point of view. you would have to consider what she thinks of hermione, harry and ron- there is some evidence of how she regards hermione from various things she says throughout the books, but i'm not sure about harry and ron, apart from the yule ball. i think she probably dismissed ron and likes harry simply because of his celebrity. i'm not convinced there is a great amount of depth there!

anway, i'm not sure if i've been any help, but good luck! you could always do 'a day in the life of a procrastinating book six author' ;)

Hermione is probably too well-known so you would have very clear character guidelines that you have to follow...so I put the stamp of disapproval on choosing her. Which is too bad...I really like Hermione!
Parvati and Lavender bug me...and they are almost the same person anyways.
I think Ginny would be the most fun because she reminds me a lot of the twins.
Luna is very interesting, and we don't know much about her, so you could get creative!
I'd go with Ginny or Luna...
