View Full Version : SNL Harry Potter Sketch

Well, I write this minutes after seeing the sketch. What can I say, it was basically a 'Hermione Hits Puberty' fanfic, complete with the innuendo (Fred and George going off to 'beat a couple of bludgers', Hagrid going to 'tame a dragon', etc). For the use they actually got out of the wands mentioned in Mugglenet's speculation, they might as well have just made the blasted things themselves. My favourite casting was Horatio Sanz as Hagrid. Your comments?

It was decent.
The skit was alot longer than I thought it was going to be.
I think Jimmy Falon played a good Fred(or George)
The best part was when F & G pulled up the couch and started up the music.
I thought it was funny that Hagrid was shorter than everyone else in the skit.

Oh no! I missed it! :( I was too busy laughing my bum off while watching MadTV! So... I'm guessing it wasn't that funny was it?

I liked the one on MadTV better... SNL's little "enemy" MadTV is so much funnier![/rant] :D
I was planning on watching the sketch but I completely forgot!

You didn't miss a whole lot. basically Hermione's.... Ummm.... chest grew in and everyone was making comments on it and hitting on her.
There were appearences by Snape,Hagrid and Fred and George.
The writers could of came up with something funnier.

I liked Horatio Sands as Hagrid. I love Jimmy Fallon as well. I thought the whole Hermione thing with Lindsey Lohan was really strange...definately out of some fan fic. Someone on the cast or team must be a HP fan, I was surprised at the accuracy of the spells and Snape's name ect.

It was funny and so very wrong. :rotfl: From posts I've read elsewhere, there are men waiting for Emma Watson to hit 18. Twisted.

I thought it was funny, I've got a slight headache from laughing at the guy who played Ron, though I do think the Welcome Back Potter sketch they did about a year or so ago was funnier.

That was, bizarre, to say the least.
Eh, I don't really keep up with SNL, but was Harry being played by a girl? Gave me the creeps. Eeewww.
Gotta say that Snape and Hagrid were the best costumes of the bunch.

I recorded it because I knew I might miss it... I just watched it. I thought it was VERY funny. Lindsey Lohan was good.
I missed the Welcome Back Potter sketch when it ran. Does anyone know if it's available online anywhere?

Horatio made a good Hagrid, Rachel Dretch looked just like Harry in SS, fred and george looked kinda like them and Hermione seemed like the actual one. Other than that, it was a bad skit. MadTV is better than SNL now.

Rachel Dretch looked just like Harry in SS,
You kidding? She looked like my old english teacher!

I actually didn't think it was that bad. I was certainly laughing, but more at the inappropriateness of it all. I guess it's just funny compared to how chaste the books are.
Personally, I thought someone was a huge fan behind the scenes. So much of it was eerily accurate. As for the gripes of the physicality of the characters -- I think that's pretty moot. You can't expect SNL cast members to look like HP characters, can you? Rachel Dratch as Harry just cracks me up, because the resemblance to SS/PS Harry is so freaky. Obviously, it's less so now, the the image the general public has of Harry Potter is the very first one, of him as a young kid.
Anyway. I'm happy to be in the minority. I thought it was good.

I thought it was funny, I was surprised of the accuracy of the spells and stuff too, and I agree Sands and Fallon were the best of the bunch in the skit.

Here's the transcript from the sketch to those who missed it. (CAUTION: PG-13 material):
http://www.veritaserum-media.com/media/2004/05/01/snltranscript.shtml
Based on the transcript, it's pretty funny. I liked the fact that the writers who wrote the sketch are Harry Potter fans (or at least took the time to research) for getting all the names, spells and lingo right. It really does feel like a fan fiction brought to life.
Oh and btw, who likes the idea of Dan, Rupert and Emma hosting SNL sometime in the future (perhaps before the release of PoA)?

The skit was alright. I don't watch SNL regularly (it was just on by chance last night) but I'd say it was probably about average for them. The point, I thought, was to glean as many innapropriate jokes as possible from an innocuous source. SNL can do this, but they weren't at their most successful tonight. Rachel Dretch and Lindsay Lohan were quite funny though.
The best skit was Debby Downer, hands down. Hilarious.

I thought it was really funny!! Especially when Fred and George came in and moved the couch and stuff. It was great. As for all of you who think that Mad TV is better than SNL, your wrong! SNL all the way, baby!!! :D

I didn't see it. What I think would be real funny is if they had their special celebrity be one of the cast from the Harry Potter movies to do a Harry Potter skit.
I can imagine Daniel Radcliffe being the special celebrity guest and what fun they could have with it. He could play the role of Harry Potter and play it as real as he does in the film while everyone else acts goofy - ending up making him look cool and them like a bunch of goofballs. They could have a skit where it's a movie premier and he's hounded by a bunch of fans dressed up to be him and ask him to do all sorts of crazy stuff while he keept calmly trying to tell them, "It's just a movie, I really can't do that stuff." And they don't believe him of course and maybe push him off a ledge with a broomstick, hoping to see him fly. :p

Rachel Dratch as Harry just cracks me up, because the resemblance to SS/PS Harry is so freaky.
Well, the problem is, the aforementioned resemblance to an English teacher I had was freakier. Her face really was too aged for the part she was playing. LOL

I thought it was hysterical that Hagrid was shorter than the rest of them! LOL! As for Harry's character, she played him very well. I made my mom watch it with me, (Also a big fan of HP) and we both loved it. I thought it could have been better, yes, but it was still good.

I dont know why everyone's saying that the skit could've been better..i thought it was incredibly funny!~ I couldn't believe how accurate they were with everything (quidditch, butterbear, teacher names...etc). Rachel Dratch makes GOOD Harry, i was cracking up at all of her weird facial expressions! I hope SNL does more Harry Potter sketches in the future!

wow i haven't been on here in a while so hello again :)
I saw the skit and thought it was pretty funny (considering how SNL pretty much bites now or days) Rachel Dratch was great as HP and looked freakishly like him. All in all one of the better skits of that episode!

I thought it was funny, and they did it such a way that fans and normal people got it. Rachel is a great Harry, do you remember when Will Forte did it? Scary stuff that was.
Lindsay's "inconspicuous" cue card looking :rotfl:

I loved it! Rachel Dratch as Harry was hilarious, I was laughing my head off the whole time. I liked Jimmy Fallon as Fred/George, too.
For all you MadTV people, I used to be a die-hard MadTV fan, and I only started getting into SNL a couple weeks ago when all the promotion for the movie Mean Girls started happening (Tina Fey wrote it). I kept seeing Tina Fey all over the TV doing different interviews and I thought she was really funny and clever, and when I found out she was a head writer for SNL, I decided to catch an episode. What can I say, I will never watch another episode of MadTV with such zeal again, after seeing SNL! I think it's so much more polished and funny. Weekend Update is a really good "sketch", I think it's my favourite regular one.
Anyways, I loved the HP sketch. I hope they do more! They certainly spent a lot of money at Alivans for only one HP-related one!

SNL is **** now days. MadTV is actually coming up with better skits now days.
Man, I grew with true SNL, when they had Mike Meyers, Chris Farley, Farrel, Eddie Murphy, and I love the old ones with Belushi and Dan Akroyd, and steve martin.
Christopher Walken is probably yhe best host for SNL.

That skit was kind of dumb.
Anyways...Lindsay Lohan will be hosting the MTV MOVIE AWARDS and in that award show they do parodies of movies and they do a really good job at it so I hope they do a parody of PoA because they show actual footage from the movie instead of making their own sets and stuff.

I agree SNL should do more HP skits. Lindsay Lohan was funny as Hermoine, as I was pretty suprised at the detail the writers put into the skit. They must be HP fans...:rotfl:

I saw some of it, and it was pretty funny, although MadTV Is about a zillion times better than SNL. SNL tends to reuse the same old skits too many times, and you begin to wonder if the seasons are just entire reruns of the same old. MadTV has some old skits, but it has hilarious new ones coming in all the time. I missed the MadTV parody of Harry Potter, I really hope they get another one done though.

Josh, I wish I could see that. Even though I don't like when people make fun of Harry Potter, but SNL is always good for a laugh. Especially when I would actually get some of the jokes, lol.

I actually hated that skit...the whole show pretty much sucked too. I don't know but SNL's best host and show lately for me was Justin Timberlake...he was so funny.
I didn't like the skit...it wasn't funny and I thought it would have been. Oh well.

I thought it was HILARIOUS, especially that they had Rachel Dratch as Harry... she actually played a pretty good boy! Lindsay Lohan was funny too, but the whole puberty thing was a little odd.. all in all, I though it was great!

The skit was about as funny as the parodies I was writing five years ago i.e. not at all. As an Australian I've seen very little of SNL but if that's what everyone raves about then surely you all need to have a good look at yourselves :p
