I was just wondering if anyone here liked Broadway stuff. I am a big fan of Broadway. We do a lot of songs from musicals in show choir. Last year we did Momma I'm a Big Girl Now from the Musical Hairspray. Also, has anyone seen a Broadway play or musical?

I want to see a Broadway so bad! I've seen the movie Hairspray, but I'm sure the play's much better. And the Tony's were a few months ago.

I believe that the Tony's are being held next month, actually, on June 6th. In fact, I think that the nominations are being announced next week.
I love Broadway! My favorite currently-running show is "Wicked", the "true story of the Witches of Oz". The music is great and it's a delightful story. I saw it late last year, and the leads were incredible. I'm crossing my fingers for it-- I'd really like for it to do well at the Tony's.
The only other show that I've ever seen on Broadway is "Jane Eyre", which I went to twice before it closed in 2001. It has beautiful music and it's a pity that it couldn't hold on. I'd really like to see "Man of La Mancha", but I don't know much about it.
I try to catch as many shows as I can when they go on tour! We have a wonderful theatre pretty close by which has $15 student rush tickets for balcony seats-- and depending on the attendance, you'll sometimes get better seats for only a few dollars more.
I think this thread is all right-- the other encompasses movie musicals as well as Broadway ones; this one is more specific, and then Broadway plays can also be discussed here. :)

As for the ones I've seen, I've seen Footloose and Greece on Broadway :D
Both of them were fabulous. :D
I would really love to see Les Misérables and the Phantom of the Opera and some other musicals, such as Music Man that I have been in, but never got to watch even once because I was down in the pit with the rest of the pit orchestra :(

I love Broadway musicals, but I've never seen one. I have seen musicals on stage, but that was in Dutch. I saw Elisabeth and Titanic and they were both amazing.
I used to be in a singing class and we performed musicals all the time. I got some lead songs in My Fair Lady last time.:D But I quit last year.

I get to go see Mama Mia! Yay! That's one of the one's I really wanted to see!
I like Hairspray. We did Momma I'm A Big Girl Now in show choir last year and I have the soundtrack to it. It sounds really funny.

Jane Eyre is a musical?!? Wow, I can't imagine that! I found the book to be so Gosh-awful that I can't imagine making a musical out of it
Man of La Mancha is wonderful. It's based on Don Quixote by Cervantes, and I like the musical as much as the book (which is odd for me)
I would really love to see Les Misérables and the Phantom of the Opera and some other musicals
Les Miserables and Phantom are both terrific. (I actually have only seen them in West End, so sadly I don't know about Broadway). The musical Phantom is, in my opinion, even better than the book, and Les Mis is almost as good.
I'm going to NYC in July, and I'm booked to see four musicals so far. Yay!!!

I've seen Footloose, Riverdance, Lion King, The Music Man, The Producers and atleast one more I can't remember at the moment on broadway. This summer I'm going to see Hairspray and Little SHop of Horrors. I loved the producers, but I was really ****** because the week after I saw it, Matther Broderick and Nathan Lane came back; I was really upset that I missed it.

Oh, they actually did quite a good job with it! I thought that they succeeded in bringing out the best aspects of the book, and translated it well onto the stage. But then, the book used to be one of my favorites, so my opinion was skewered to begin with. ;) Yet, even now I like the music, though I've long since moved past the book (the plot ruins it in my eyes). The score is really beautiful, but it couldn't find a steady fanbase and was so overshadowed by 'The Producers' that it closed very quickly. I understand that it is doing very well on the Regional stages, however. :)
Man of La Mancha is wonderful. It's based on Don Quixote by Cervantes, and I like the musical as much as the book (which is odd for me)
Yes, I knew it was based after Don Quixote. The only song that I've heard from it ("Impossible Dream", of course) is one of my favorites in any genre. I know it was revived on Broadway in 2002, but apart from that I've no idea what's going on with it. I don't even know if it's still playing. I can't find anything about the revival on the internet, either.

well, we waited and got signatures and pictures with Kirsten Chenoweth, and Eden Espinosa (Idina understudy ((Idina is filming in Africa))) Kristen was so nice! she was all smiles, and was happy to take pictues and chat with us. Before we saw the show we had a Meet the Actors workshop and that was when we talked to Kathy Deitch (ensemble). She gave us so many insights and i envy her. i mean she is working with the greats!!

I have also crewed for amdram productions of: Cabaret, Kiss Me Kate, The Littlest *****house in Texas, Bugsy, Godspell amoungst others.

I, too, just got back from NYC on Sunday, and I saw 2 shows in the 3 full days we were there -- Hairspray and Rent. Mom liked Hairspray better, and I liked Rent better. The first half of Rent was almost impossible to understand because the instruments were overpowering the voices...bad in a musical that's ALL music. I got the soundtrack last night and it's much much better. :)

On Broadway I've seen:
The King and I, Annie, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aida, Mama Mia!, Annie Get Your Gun, Peter Pan, The Sound of Music, The Phantom of the Opera (3 times), 42nd Street, Wicked (twice, Idina Menzel is magnificent), Fiddler On The Roof, and The Prince and the Pauper (off Broadway).
In London I've seen Mousetrap, which was fantastic, and King Lear, which I feel certain I would have appreciated more had I not been 13.

Isn't Eden good? I’ve seen the show twice, first with all the leads (except that Fiyero was played by Taye Diggs), and the last time without any of them. I was a bit disappointed, since Kristin’s leaving and I won’t be able to see her again, but I must say that I was amazed at how talented all the understudies are. I’d say that they are on par with the leads—they certainly left little to be desired when I saw them.

Not all true. If the sheet music is out, the royalties can be paid, which makes a wonderful musical! All right, Phantom has some good music (Music of the Night is an exceptionally beautiful song)...what i CANT STAND is Chicago! The movie was stupid, and not well made, not that the stage version was great either. If you've ever seen Chicago on stage, you'll remember how LITTLE set there was and how poor the costumes were thought out!

Faeriewitch,

That's not true. Even if the sheet music is out you need permission to put on a public performance if the play or musical is still under copyright. There are controls to ensure that no two productions of the same show are performed within a short while of each other too close together and things like that. It is very rare that anyone gets rights to do an amateur production of a show while that show is still playing on Broadway or in the West End of London.
In the UK you have to go through Samuel French to get the rights (http://www.samuelfrench-london.co.uk/sf/Pages/roy-agents.html) and how much they cost depends on the size of your theatre and how many nights you are going to be running for. If you look at the list of what they have available you will see that none of the big name shows that are still in professional runs in the UK are listed. The only exception that I know to this is that the Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society got the rights to perform Les Mis and they are the only amateur company to have done so.
I have been on the management of several amateur productions and what we have done and when we have done it has been dependant on being able to get the rights. Also any changes to the script, score or libretto of a copyrighted peice needs to get approval of the author. This can be a pain.

Hah! When I went to see it, Idina actually performed the first half, but had to leave during intermission because she was sick. You could hear the grumbling in the theatre when the change was announced. I felt really bad for Eden when she entered during the first part of Act 2 (very few people clapped for anything), but after she nailed "No Good Deed", the audience was wowed, and as they took their bows the applause was deafening.

lol! It's impressive how quickly they can ad-lib and recover. I had forgotten that Norbert was leaving. I think I heard that Joey McIntyre is taking over the role. But I tell you, I'd campaign to get Kristoffer Cusick and Laura Bell Bundy (who fill in for Fiyero and Glinda) to take over the roles when he and Kristin leave. So, I saw Little Shop of Horrors last night. It was... mediocre. I have never seen the movie, though I was familiar with the basic plot, and I went expecting to be entertained. I wasn't. The first act was as close as I've ever come to being bored by sitting in a musical, and the second act was just strange. I think I expected it to be silly, but clever. Silly it was, clever- most certainly not.
I can see why the show is popular though. It has a very campy, 'Rocky horror' feel about it, and lets face it, even I thought the singing girls were a riot. (And the dentist! Oh my goodness, that was funny.)

I think my favourite Broadway production would have to be Les Miserables. My school performed it last year, and I was part of the chorus chanting away the very catching melodies, and I loved it! It's even better when its performed by professionals, and there's just something about plays based on history and which try to show the emotions of the people during those times instead of just a few odd characters that makes them so powerful.

Lol, I love Broadway. On Broadway, I have seen Thoroughly Modern Millie, La Boheme, and Phantom of the Opera. On tours, I have seen 42nd Street (highly recommend), Chicago, Oklahoma, and Urinetown. I want to see The Producers, Grease (not Greece, lol =) ), and Hairspray tours. In a school production, I saw Les Mis School Edition. For any of you Broadway-goers, don't pay full price tickets, there are discounts available (except for hot shows). A site I recommend is http://www.broadwaybox.com
Although I said hot shows usually don't have discounts, watch for occasional discounts on those types of shows...there are ones for Hairspray and Producers!

I'm a big fan of musicals, but being in St. Louis means I only see touring or regional. I did get to see Urinetown on Broadway last summer when I went to NYC, and it was amazing. I havent seen Thouroughly Modern Millie but everything I've heard about it, and considering how fantastic Urinetown was, convinced me that Urinetown was indeed robbed of the Best Musical Tony.
Right now I am ABSOLUTELY in love with Avenue Q! I was quite delighted that it won the Tony, and even though I've obviously never seen it, I cant stop playign the cast recording. I became intrigued by the posters I saw for it last year, and upon seeing the song titles (Everyones a Little Bit Racist, Schadenfreude, It Sucks to Be Me) I knew that this would be something I love. And I was right!:)
My other favorites are The Producers (got to see a touring show), Rent, Cabaret, Bat Boy(kinda obscure but if you can see a production, go!), Anything Goes, Chicago, The Rocky Horror Show (the stage version is quite interesting), Hedwig and the Angry Inch(ditto), West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Chorus Line, and others I'm sure I'm forgetting.
Does anyone else want to see South Park:Bigger Longer and Uncut translated to the stage? I'm not quite sure how you'd do it, but everytime I listen to the soundtrack I envision how it would look up on stage! The songs are just perfect.

You didnt get to see Rent??? *hugs* Oh, I'm sorry! You would have LOVED IT! And as for Wicked, my choir teacher plays it ALL THE TIME in his office. We wanted to do it for our musical this year, but they havent put out the sheet music yet :(
RENT's also hard to do in a school because of some of the parts. Remember :eyebrows: ? I tried pushing it with the choir director too at my school but he and I decided it was both hard to do and very un-school-like to do. Oh well. :)

I saw The Phantom on Boardway. And several different shows at Radio City Music Hall. It seems I see more plays than anything! As far as musicals and plays go, I've seen more of some the good oldies of yesteryear than newer ones:
Bye Bye Birdie, Cats, Les Miserables, Hairspray, West Side Story...
And I've seen The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance and Ruddigore by Gilbert and Sullivan
Much ado about Nothing, Comedy of Errors, Midsummer Nights Dream by Shakespeare
Cyrano de Bergerac by Rostand
Our Town by Wilder - my least fav :(
Movin' Out just came to a theater in our area, but I don't know if we'll make it to that one.

I'm such a Broadway geek. I was never really into it unil 9th grade. My chorus class took a trip to New York City. We saw... Aida and Riverdance. Which ironically, Riverdance put me to sleep. Then we went again to New York when I was in 11th grade. And we saw The Lion King and Stomp. I have to say, I can seriously see why people pay so much money to see these performances. They are fanTASTIC. I wish I lived near NYC so I could see the full production. Traveling Broadway usually comes here, but it's nothing like the original.

Only 2 a year? And you call that obsessed? :p
When I lived in London I saw at least a show a month (The TKTS booth and student standbys are wonderful) and I was one of the least obsessed amoung my friends. Mind you they are scarily strange people

When I was in New York in August, I saw ''The Boy from Oz"' on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre. It has Hugh Jackman in it and he won the Tony Award for best actor this year. Let me tell you, he deserved that award. It was one of the funniest, saddest and all around best performances I've ever seen.
He brought so much energy to it and yet so much drama as well. I would recommend it to everyone except the show has closed, because Jackman has gone back to making movies and there was no understudy.

I have seen many Broadway shows including Les Miserables, Cinderella, Stomp, Blast, Kiss Me Kate, and many more. (Les Mis. was my favorite.)
My parents saw The Man of La Mancha and The Producers in NYC when they went there for their anniversery 2 years ago.

Oooh, "Defying Gravity" is a superb song. The melody and lyrics and the sentiment all combined are thrilling, really. That song, and "For Good", give me goosebumps whenever I listen. What are your other favorites? I like "Loathing", the lyrics are clever and so droll!
Les Mis is a masterpiece! All other musicals can bow down before it and look to it with awe.

I had the best time this summer in New York. I got to see Hugh Jackman in "The Boy From Oz" which was great, and so was he. And the woman who played Judy Garland and the woman who played Liza Minelli were really talented.
Moving on, the best musical I saw had to be "Wicked" with Idina Menzel! I was sooo excited I got to see one of the original headliners, who won a Tony in her role! And boy did she deserve it! Everything about this show was great. The orchestrations, the singing, the acting, the costumes, the sets, the effects...everything! It's been 3 months since I saw it, and I am still listening to the soundtrack as often as I can singing along.
If you ever get the chance to see it, DO IT!!!

AHHHHHH!!!! I AM SO JEALOUS THAT YOU GOT TO SEE WICKED!!!!!! Check out my siggy below vv . . . I want to see it soooooo bad. :sigh: If it goes on tour anytime soon, or if I get to NYC again soon, I am soooooooo there!
Well, I've seen a lot of Broadway shows:
Phantom of the Opera (5 times)
Les Miserables (3 times)
Cats (1)
Mamma Mia (2)
Urinetown - that show is friggin' hilarious!!! (2)
Chicago - the stage version totally kicks the movie's trash . . . Bob Fosse rocks!!! (1)
Metamorphasis - this one is Off Broadway, but oh well. Just watch out for the naked Cupid! Yikes! :wow:
RENT - (1) - loved it. bawled. I'm dying to see it again.
Aida - (2) - I love this musical. Amneris is soooo cool! so are Aida and Radames . . .
Proof - (1) - it's not a musical, but it is awesome. I saw Jennifer Jason Leigh in it . . . it won a pulitzer prize (I think) and there is a movie of it coming out soon with Gwyneth Paltrow . . . It is very good, and very thought provoking.
Starlight Express - (1)
EFX - (1) - coooolll . . .
The King and I (1)
The Scarlet Pimpernel - (1) - this is a great musical, and the book is even better!!!
Bye Bye Birdie - (1)
Shows that I am dying to see:
Wicked, Jekyll & Hyde (I saw a recording of it, but that doesn't count), Into the Woods (saw a recording), and a lot of other ones. There are a lot that I have yet to discover.
Community Shows I've been in:
Once On This Island (great show . . . I cried and I was in the cast!!! Get the soundtrack), Chess (also a good show . . . somewhat disturbing though, and depressing), State Fair (cheesey, but dang fun . . . especially when playing a swing dancer! just don't get dropped on your head . . . it hurts and you might have to go to physical therapy :grumble: )
Anyway, I love broadway!!!
As Sondheim put it:

That's an impressive list, stephyj! And to let you know, Jekyll & Hyde IS a brilliant show to see live (I like the DVD presentation of it, but I'm a little peeved that they decided to make the one with David Hasselhoff the one they would put out on DVD... What about the original cast???).
Let's see if I can come up with a comprehensive list of what I've seen live...
o Aida (Magnificent, easily in my top three shows ever. I agree, Amneris is fabulous!)
o Annie Get Your Gun (Not with Bernadette Peters, but YES with Tom Wopat. He's amazing!)
o Beauty and the Beast (Twice--once in New York with Andrea McArdle and once in Salt Lake City. Excellent both times. The finale of Be Our Guest is nothing short of SPECTACULAR)
o Big River (It was a pretty cheap little local production, and I was young, but I still remember it pretty vividly)
o Candide (by the Portland Opera Company in Oregon. It was AMAZING. Easily one of the most brilliant scores ever put to paper and stage, and by the incomparable Leonard Bernstein)
o Children of Eden (Again, local theater, but it was actually a pretty nice production)
o The Civil War (Very moving and powerful)
o Crazy For You (Definitely another of the best scores ever, even though the lead in the production I saw was a little on the annoying side)
o Jekyll & Hyde (Yes, I saw it on stage, and yes, it was heartbreaking and exciting)
o Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Donny Osmond's production was touring in my area. We didn't get tickets to see him, but we did get tickets to see his understudy--his nephew David. Honestly, if no one had told me it wasn't Donny, I never would have guessed. It was an awesome show)
o Les Miserables (After missing it three times in my area, I FINALLY caught it on stage. It was just as I imagined and I could finally call myself a true fan since I had at last seen it... I mean, I knew every word and everything. Geek that I am...)
o Mamma Mia! (Fun music, interesting characters, a little coarse at times, but still entertaining. I loved how they worked the songs into a feasible story)
o The Phantom (A lame local production of Maury Yeston's inferior version of the story)
o The Phantom of the Opera (Twice in San Fransisco, same cast, but on different visits to California. It was brilliant and I was glad to finally see one of the most famous musicals in history)
o Ragtime (Words could not express how this show made me feel. It was a thrill from start to finish. What music that man can write!)
o The Secret Garden (A really good university production.)
o Seussical: The Musical (EXCELLENT show. Positive, uplifting, innocent, brilliant!)
o Smokey Joe's Cafe (Good, musical revue... Not much else to say. The cast was great)
Goodness, that's a lot... More than you wanted to know, I'm sure, but a lot of them really moved and changed me. :)
Shows I'm lately dying to see? Wicked, Urinetown, The Last Five Years, Tick, Tick BOOM!, The Lion King, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Hairspray, The Producers (I need to see it live before they make the film of it)...
Lately I starred in a college production of You're a Good Man Charlie Brown (I love that show. The music and characters are timeless and innocent), I've been in Pirates of Penzance, Joseph, and even a stupid little musical called Tumbleweeds (if you have heard of this one, you win a PRIZE).
Anyway, that's probably more than any of you wanted to know, I'll just end with some lovely parting words:
Something has changed within me.... Something is not the same...
I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game,
Too late for second guesses, too late to go back to sleep,
It's time to trust my instincts, close my eyes... and leap...

StephyJ, I'm so thrilled to find another Pimpernel fan! I saw it twice when it was on tour (alas, never on Broadway), and think it's terrible that it didn't last very long. agpotter, you're the first person I've seen outside out of a Broadway forum to mention the Civil War! It was the first Broadway show I ever saw. I love the music to both musicals; it's a pity that Frank Wildhorn is so often criticised (except for Jekyll & Hyde, of course, which must have been well-received by critics), personally I think he's a very talented composer.
I agree with you both about Aida. The music is magnificent; it kind of reminds me of Wicked, the way it's very powerful and moving, but light enough to be catchy. I always liked the Nubian servant, Mereb, I think his name was. The three leads are great, but he was always my favorite. :D

The Scarlet Pimpernel is a brilliant show and The Civial War, while not conventionally narrative, is really rather stunning in theme and tone. I really wish his stuff were better received. One of my favorite songs from Civil War is 'Candle In The Window.' It is beautiful. If you like Frank Wildhorn, you should listen to songs by Linda Eder. She is his wife, starred in Jekyll & Hyde as Lucy, and she is a dang awesome belter. I love her version of 'Man of La Mancha', and I love 'Vienna' - I think Frank helped with that one.
Another musical treat on video (and I have a soundtrack! It isn't produced any more :p) is 'My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies' It is wonderful . . . Liza, Audra, Andrea, Lea, Bebe, Elaine, Priscilla, Jennifer, Linda, Dee, Nell, Marin, Judy, Dorothy, Karen, Debra, Julie, Rebecca . . . with songs from shows like Sugar, Chicago, Pal Joey, Ain't Misbehavin',
Dream Girls, Man of La Mancha, Showboat, Kicks, Company, and lots of others. Yeah, if you wanna hear it, IM me. :D

Wicked
Phantom of the Opera
Fiddler on the Roof

Ragtime

Tick...Tick...Boom! (at a theatre in PA)
Then we have the list of shows I have worked on at various schools and local theatres which makes me realize I have not has a social life outside of the theatre circle in a long time.
The Wizard of Oz
Rodgers and Hammersteins Cinderella
Our Town
Once Upon a Mattress
Noises Off

The Rimers of Eldritch
Little Shop of Horrors
Picnic
Crimes of the Heart
42nd Street
Godspell
Mr. 80%
Rodgers and Gershwin: Memories and Melodies (A Revue we did)

The only other show that I've ever seen on Broadway is "Jane Eyre", which I went to twice before it closed in 2001. It has beautiful music and it's a pity that it couldn't hold on.
Sweet! Another person who has seen and loves Jane Eyre! It really is a phenominal musical, and it's a shame that it closed so quickly. I loved it so much that a friend and I are doing it for our senior theatre project at college: she'll be producing and playing Jane, and I'll be directing and playing Rochester. It's gonna be awesome! Can't wait.
Since I am a Theatre major, I'm somewhat obsessed with Broadway shows. Here's what I've seen:
-Phantom of the Opera (twice, first time at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, VA, and the other time on Broadway)
-Miss Saigon (right before it closed on Broadway)
-Les Miserables
-Annie Get Your Gun (with Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat! :D )
-Jane Eyre: The Musical (I think I still have a slight crush on Marla Schaffel, the woman who played Jane)
-The Lion King (in Toronto)
-42nd Street
-Movin' Out
-Little Shop of Horrors
I really really want to see Wicked before Idina Menzel leaves in January, but I'm not sure that's gonna happen, unfortunately.
Some musicals and other plays I've been in throughout the years:
-The Sound of Music (back frosh year of high school, I was Friedrich von Trapp)
-Little Women (as Laurie...really not a very good musical. One of my worst show experiences, really, but that might have been the theatre company I was working with at the time)
-Fiddler on the Roof
-Appointment with Death (an Agatha Christie murder mystery play)
-The Mousetrap (also by Christie; I think it's one of the longest running shows in West End theatre history, correct me if I'm wrong. I played Paravicini. What a great part! :rotfl: )
-Into the Woods (as Rapunzel's Prince)
-Oliver! (as Fagin, one of my favorite roles to play)
-The Wiz (my main part was Uncle Henry, but I had various other roles. Now, why an almost all white school did an all black musical is still beyond me. It was an experience)
-The Music Man (in the Barbershop Quartet)
-Everyman (my first college show, it's a Medieval morality play)
-Twelfth Night (by Shakespeare, and is one of my favorites of his plays, as Duke Orsino)
-The Birds (no relation to Alfred Hitchcock. It's a Greek comedy by Aristophanes. I played the Barbarian God, and they costumed me to resemble Ozzy Osbourne. Riot. ;) )
-King Lear (one of my best theatre experiences ever! Guest artist Tom Tammi, the brother of our director, who's been in several well-known movies as well, was brought in to play Lear. So much fun and such a rewarding experience!)
-The Cherry Orchard (by Anton Chekhov)
Right now we're working on the musical Candide, which I saw some of you mentioned as really liking. I have to say that I love it. It's a phenominal show! I play the Baron of Thunder-ten-Tronck and Vanderdendur (who is the soloist in "Bon Voyage" for those of you who know the show/music). We open next Friday! :D
And then, as I mentioned before, next semester (providing we get our final approval from the faculty) I'll be working on Jane Eyre: the Musical as Edward Fairfax Rochester, along with directing. It's gonna be an experience!
Yeesh, guess I was a little long-winded. Sorry about that.

I just love that story.:agree: "Let the world forsake me; let them do their worst-- I will withstand it all, they will not break me!" Have you ever heard Douglas Sills' version of it on the Pimpernel OBC? It's rather short, but he sings it with such pathos that it makes my heart swell whenever I hear it. Sometimes it seemed they made the story a little too concise and didn't manage to pull off the depth of story or something, like the songs were iconic pieces that barely managed to describe the character (since I'm such a fan of Charlotte Bronte's work), and I always thought Jane sounded a bit too, er... matronly? I always thought she was supposed to sound a little frail and girlish, but I guess that wouldn't really work for musical theater... :) But it's really grown on me, and now I love a lot of it. In the Light of the Virgin Morning is beautiful, and I love the passion in Painting Our Portraits. Sirens and My Secret Soul are also rather lovely and powerful. They do sing the name, "Jane" quite a lot though... Almost as much as they sing the name "Jean Valjean" in Les Miserables.
I agree, Emmy Rossum is a surprising Christine. I didn't really have any expectations for her, since I had never heard her sing, but to hear a couple tracks (including Think of Me and Angel of Music), I'm fairly impressed. You can tell some of it is a little enhanced, but I'm just excited to see it all in costume and sets and music and character... I'm just now starting to get excited for it actually... And yes, the chandelier IS Lot 666.
About the amazing Douglas Sills... I really love when Marguerite sings When I Look at You, but it's not really in my range, and besides, it's really a girl's song (lyrically) so I REALLY love Sir Percy's reprise. It just somehow makes me feel more comfortable to sing "I miss her so..." :) You're right, it's so packed with emotion you can really feel his heart breaking.

ooooh! I love Percy's reprise! It is even more heartwrenching than Marguerite's version . . . but when I saw it, there was a reprise where Percy and Marguerite both sang, and I really liked it, but it's not on any of the cds.

That is so cool. :wow: So vibrant and colorful! The leads' voices are surprisingly good, also. I heard Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson (are those their names?) sing "All I Ask of You", and it was quite impressive!
Same here. Have you ever heard Douglas Sills' version of it on the Pimpernel OBC? It's rather short, but he sings it with such pathos that it makes my heart swell whenever I hear it. Good choice with the song, by the way! "Someone Like You" is really wonderful.I've seen the trailer for Phantom of the Opera and I can't wait to see the movie! And no, I haven't heard that version of "When I Look at You." I'd like to though. And I love "Someone Like You" too. It's such a powerful ballad, and that's why I chose it and won with it. :D I love the music from Jekyll and Hyde.

I agree with all of you that have said that the Phantom of the Opera trailer looks awesome, because it does. I can't wait to see it, especially considering that it's my favorite musical! It looks like it's gonna be a fantastic movie.
Also, for those of you that care (not likely many, as I've just recently joined these boards ;) ), Jane Eyre got approved today! It'll go up next semester, and I couldn't be more excited! :rotfl:

I was also wondering if anyone here has heard of Brooklyn: The Musical (http://www.brooklynthemusical.com/index.html) which opened on Broadway recently? Eden Espinosa (who was Idina Menzel's fantastic stand-by in Wicked) plays the lead. They have a few songs up on the website ("Once Upon a Time" is really nice), overall it looks really good.

I thought I would add my little bit here. . . I am a HUGE HUGE HUGE broadway fanatic. Not nessicarilly or classic broadway (aka. Phantom, Cats, Les Miserables. . .) mainly because they are played WAY too much, and EVERYONE knows them, so I go for more of the Modern Broadway. . .
-Seussical the Musical, one of my top most favorites! Infact, my school is putting it on, and I am trying out for it next week! EEP! I hope I am Gertrude McFuzz! I was born for the part!
-Aida is one of the greatest plays every written. I was obsessing over this one as of late.
-Wicked is my latest obsession, amazing music, brilliant plot, I give it 20 thumbs up.
-Urinetown. Don't judge a book by its cover, or a play by its title. This play is surprisingly funny and deep, and yes, moving.
-Jekyle and Hyde. (I know I spelled that wrong. . .) Yes, a good dark broadway.
There are quite a bit more, but that is good for now! Cheers~

Hey Harrietta! I must say you have great taste in musical theater! I also have been loving Urinetown lately. It's just really fresh and original (even though a lot of it is parody of other musicals... :)). Crazy, your favorites are my favorites!! I really wish you luck on your audition, Gertrude is a brilliant character, it would be great fun to play her.
Oh, and nice signature, by the way.... :)

I tend to agree with Harrietta about played and replayed Broadway stuff (except that I wouldn't call Les Miserables or Phantom of the Opera "classic" Broadway... I think that term belongs to the likes of Bernstein and Berlin, Kern and Kander & Ebb, Rodgers and Hammerstein, etc. etc.). I think a lot of people just know and love LM or PotO or Cats or some other humongously mainstream show and call themself a musical theater buff. For me, the real test of Broadway fandom is if they know something more obscure (but still brilliant) and less... er... overplayed, like The Last Five Years (or any of Jason Robert Brown's amazing stuff), Tick, Tick... BOOM!, or even The Civil War or The Scarlet Pimpernel or Martin Guerre.
Still, I wish you luck again on your audition. What are you going to sing for it? Something from Seussical!? Or is that gauche at an audition, to sing something from the show for which you are auditioning?

Well, I had my audition. I thought I did ok. I hate to brag, but my teacher said he was impressed with my singing voice. I guess he just said that, because I was in his drama class last year, and then he never knew I sang too, so that was ok.
But sadly, I didn't get the main part. . . some teacher's pet girl got it! Grrr. . . But if you are familiar with Seussical, I am one of the three bird girls who sorta narrorate and sing back up and tell the story and what not! I get to be an alto! YES! I am in my range! Anyway, too bad I didn't get then part I wanted, yet I am still in the play, and yes, with a decent part, so there you go.

Cor, I'm flat out jealous of anyone who's seen a Broadway musical. I live in the Philippines, and for nearly all my life I've been wanting to just fly out to New York and see a show. I do theater here back home, and so far, I've just done "The Wiz". We're currently doing Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along" and I love it.
I'd love to see "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum", "Cats", "Avenue Q", "Into the Woods", "Once on this Island", "The Last Five Years", "Urinetown" or "Phantom of the Opera" staged at least once in my life. I'm a huge Sondheim fan.

Congratulations Harrietta! The bird girls are a great part. You'll get a lot of stage time, and you get to sing in almost every song, it seems like (you're backup for pretty much all of Gertrude's and Mayzie's song, right?). Darn those high school drama politics. When I was in high school I auditioned for Guys and Dolls, but the leads were already chosen even before the auditions, which is nonsense, because half the leads were tone-deaf. I feel your pain. *nods fervently*
But anyway, congrats again, I hope you have a great time in that show, I bet it would be really fun.

think a lot of people just know and love LM or PotO or Cats or some other humongously mainstream show and call themself a musical theater buff.
The reason they are played so much is because they are loved. There is nothing wrong with that.
I have been in two small productions of Les Mis (twice as Eponine and factory girl/prostitute in Motreil-sur-meir. I know I can't spell.) I was also Madame Giry in a production of POTO. These shows are shows I would tour with FOREVER, given the oppurtunity. I have been in many other shows, and rarely do they emit such power as these two.
I am not a fan of CATS. It was a book of poems by TS Eliot, that's why there is no real correlation.

I'm a huge fan of Broadway, which is why I ultimately started working in a professional theatre. Oh, I've taken a hiatus from performing until my daughter is older, but I am the manager of our box office. The best perk is that I get free tickets to the shows. We've done the popular (Fiddler, Guys and Dolls, Cabaret), and the slightly less done (La Cage, Ain't Misbehavin), to the darn near obscure (The Sunshine Boys, Turn of the Worm).
I also get sneak previews every once in a while. (I married an actor.) :eyebrows:

First to ^, you're not weird, those are great shows (even though I must disagree, as I love both versions of Peter Pan, but I'm partial to the Disney version.... I've just seen too much Mary Martin as Peter to love it...), especially You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. I starred in a REALLY small production of that last semester and it was so much fun, I wished it lasted longer. But how/when did Idina Menzel fall? I haven't heard that yet...
I also love Movin' Out (although I'm sorry to say I've never seen it). The score is incredible, Michael Cavanaugh does a fantastic job at playing and singing the songs (almost) as good as Mr. Joel himself! I also love Wicked, in fact, I've been listening to it quite a lot lately, as well as Urinetown. Such great music on the stage these days!
Interesting that Movin' Out and Wicked should be mentioned in two subsequent posts... I had a friend whose dance company toured to New York and they got to see both of those shows (back when Menzel and Chenoweth were both starring in Wicked) and they loved them both... It just makes me a little sad when people who don't REALLY care about certain musicals get to see them while people who do have to sit at home! *pouts like a kid then gets over it and grows up* :)

Responding to ^ I don't like the disney peter pan eather. And for the Charlie Brown thing, I never acualy saw it, my mom took my brother to see it, but I stole the CD, and memerized most of the songs, but I pretend I saw it. And I acualy really want to see it, the middle school I gradualted from last year, is puting it on this year and since the district has really bad planing the highschool, and middle school plays are the same days, and I'm in the stage crew of the high school one, so thats really anoying.
And you didn't know Menzel fell? It was her third to last production(second to last day), with literaly five minunts to the end of the show, she fell though a trap door in the stage, while 'melting' and they had to stop the whole show get her understudy into make-up and stuff, It was a huge thing, it was all over the news the next day, I'm surprised you didn't hear about it. Anyways she ended up braking a rib, I think.
Also, I've never seen Movin' Out, I'll have to go see it!

Can't believe I havent been to this thread before. Goes to show how addicting Harry Potter is... scary.
Anyway some of my favorite Broadway shows are as follows: Sherryl, Anything Goes, Mame, Man of La Mancha, Babes in Arms,
Favorite songs are: Smoke gets in your eyes, Don't be anything less (From Snoopy, also a classic even if it is kiddish.. I was in that play in high school), Younger than Springtime from South Pacific, You'll Never Get Away From Me from Gypsy, If I would ever leave you (Camelot) and many many more.

Nah, we can talk about off-Broadway stuff here, I think. I think by "Broadway" this thread's title refers to anything Broadway-styled musical...
For example, I LOVE Urinetown, and isn't it off-Broadway? There are loads of good shows not exactly ON the Great White Way.
Also, intersting you should bring up Snoopy!!! It's a great show, it has some really awesome music in it.
