Okay guys, sorry about this, but we just got assigned a project to write about a world event/time period/issue that has affected our lives. What better than Harry Potter? We need to have input from lots of other people on this subject so...PLEASE tell us how you think good ol' HP has changed you.

We'll start:

Harry Potter essentially got me my best friend, turned down a would-be boyfriend, and started me writing. In other words, my entire life right now would be different if JK hadn't taken that train ride. Also, I have a much higher expectation for books that have a "twist" at the end. Preston & Child have NOTHING on JK. Fantasy moved way up on the "what-to-read" list.

Thanks!!!

It got me interested in fantasy books and got me a girlfriend (and something to talk about with her). I started reading more. I "donated" a lot of money to the bookstore.

Good luck on your project.

I think Harry Potter made me more aware of religious extremists in the US. It also showed me that there is a common ground that everyone (for the most part) can come together on. Harry Potter seems to be read and enjoyed in every country, it crosses cultural barriers and it's kind of cool to think that you are reading something that everyone else enjoys as well no matter who or what they are. Anyway - it just kind of reaffirms my faith in the world.

It's amazing isn't it?

It's amazing to see how a tale of a wizard boy that blossomed from the mind of JK Rowling, has turned the lifes of many upside down, and inside out. It's made us turn our attentions to this magical story, and not only engage ourselves inside, it's also added a wonderful aspect in our lives. How so you say? Take a gander...

Our lives were once made of homework, or to others, jobs. Our lives were made of video games and sports on TV. Some lives were made of books just as Harry Potter, but many of those books were Teen magazines and in some cases, and books of cooking, and for others, love novels and biographies. But then came Harry Potter..

Do we still do those things? Yes. In fact, many that I have listed, I still do. But now Harry Potter is on that list. But see it's not me squeeeeeezing Harry Potter into my list of "things to do." It's more like, I'm moving things OVER for Harry Potter. When you think about it, look how much it has effected many of our lives.

First it was the books. (Of course) Sorcerrers Stone/ Philosophers Stone to be exact. Through then, we have taken time out of many of our busy schedules, just to endure these stories of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. And these weren't your typical one liner stories. THese were engaging tales that took you on rides of fantasy, and not to mention, took time to read, and with that, things on our schedules had to be moved. "Sorry," I'd say to my friends, each of them holding either an acoustic guitar, or an Xbox controller, "I'm reading Harry Potter at the moment. Come back later maybe?" (I'd like to thank my friends for putting up with me haha)

Then came movies. Now people were skeptical for these movies, but it seems the movies have adapted very well to the HP fanbase. And they have been also accepted into JK Rowlings arms also. Now we see ourselves taking our free time from are jobs and schoolwork to go watch the new movies.

More time made for Harry Potter....

This also brought the ASPECTS from the movies into the Harry Potter world. No matter how people felt about the movies, when one hears "Hedwig's theme" their minds are changed. We are no longer just men and women, boys and girls. We are muggles. Or to some, witches and wizards. haha. JK. The music holds a dear place in my heart, because I think without the music we've heard associated with Harry Potter, the movies wouldn't have been as emotional and engaging.

Then there are the other parts that people don't realise. Take Mugglenet for example. And THIS forum, Chamber of Secrets. We see ourselves logging onto it, watching a Harry Potter subject come up that we would like to discuss, or perhaps meet fellow HP fans, that you can share your ideas and thoughts on what book 6 will be named. This doesn't include reading others posts, others fan stories, news on Harry Potter, and interviews of the people involved in the Harry Potter world.

So think to yourself. It's amazing how one little story that evolved to many stories took our hearts and our time on a rollercoaster ride. I thank JK Rowling for sharing her joy with us. I hope everyone feels the same way. But tell me, what are your thoughts? How do you feel about the Harry Potter world? Many people have said they "loved or hated" Harry Potter, but give your full thoughts on it. I'd like to hear everyone's views. Posts have been discussed. But i'd like this to be special. Because I know people feel the same way as I feel. So let your heart speak for you...

But you know what's amazing about all of this. The excitement, isn't even done......

This is a wonderful idea. Eloquently put too, I must say.
I can't find anything comparable so far.
I'll try to come back and post something meaninful in a bit.

Well said, Larry Potter. And you know, I was thinking much the same today as I returned to my apartment after what was essentially an "all-Harry weekend." I hosted a line party for the release of PoA, and as I unloaded my car and began to unpack today, I almost laughed at myself.

My wizard's robe was on a hangar in the back seat. A few PoA posters and a new magic wand stuck out of my bag. Stacks of board games and puzzles -- all Harry Potter -- took over my couch. My British edition (for I have both the U.S. and UK versions) of Goblet of Fire sits on my coffee table, beckoning me to read it once more.

I took two days vacation to host a party in a city an hour away from my new home. I spent way too much money on games and activities and costumes for this party. And when the big night came, waiting in line for the midnight showing, I couldn't have been happier. I was in my element. Having a moment of silence for the dearly departed Padfoot. Arguing over exactly who Mark Evans really is. Elbowing a fellow fan because she was dressed as a Slytherin. Yeah, you could say my life has changed.

And I wouldn't have it any other way :)

Slightly off-topic, but host your own! That's what I did. I was sad there wasn't anything in my area, so I hosted my own. Now that the release has come and gone, I guess it doesn't matter. But never underestimate your own ability to unite Harry Potter fans. You'd be surprised how just the sight of the Gryffindor tie can spark a conversation with the entire wait staff at IHOP. :rotfl: Siriusly, there are more HP fans out there than you'd think, and we all know how we love to get together and talk up the wonder of Jo's world.

That's a very well-written and very true post there, Larry Potter! Very beautiful indeed! :)

However... Discussion on how HP has changed our lives is going on in Influence of Harry Potter on Our World (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=20333)

There's also another thread somewhere around here on how HP changed our lives... I can't seem to find it at the moment.

Remember… Using the search (http://www.cosforums.com/search.php?) function helps keep down on duplicate threads!

A very eloquent post and so true!

I have been an avid HP fan for years, but reading your post made me think of September 11th. The HP books literally got me through that terrible time. Whenever I couldn't watch another second on TV or just couldn't think about it anymore, I would pick up an HP book. Didn't matter which one...any one would do...and I'd start reading, it took a bit, but I would eventually be transported to Hogwart's and just for a little while I could think of something else.

HP has changed my life in other ways and lead me to other wonderful books, but I will always be thankful to HP for the escape it afforded me during the time after September 11th.

Here are my 2 cents:

My sister is almost 10 years younger than me and we don't have too much in common - but we do share a big HP addiction since I bought Philosophers Stone for her birthday. Its a great thing that we got closer because of this and when we meet we now have something to talk about, can watch movies and play games together ... I also introduced her to the internet by showing her HP sites.

I think the fact that so many people use this site and that there are so many strong rules that HP has had an effect on our lives. I think its the fact that each books represents a year in the life of HP. People have been intrigued to see a young boy grow up and mature through what would be secondary school. Harry is a talented individual who has not had a really bad early childhood and I think people want to know how he will deal with the pressures of being one of the most famous wizards, having a constant threat on his life byt he most feared wizard, as well as his school life on top. People are also facinated by the amazing freindship shared between Harry, Ron and Hermione and the ups and downs that they encounter. This one child has bascially gripped the nation since the first book in 98 and his popluarity is always increasing. I htink one of the reasons is os popular is that although he is a wizard, people can relate to at least one of the characters in the book and is wants to find out how their lives continue int he book

I recently wrote a paper on Harry Potter. How it does not effect what we believe in. It does not turn us away from our religion. But I do believe that it has given me a better imagination. I mean, I cant really explain but, in a sense, it has.

It is really nice to read people stories in how Harry Potter changed their lives! It's really kind of "magical' what these books do for people, and how they bring people together.

As for how Harry Potter has changed my life? Well, I started reading the books in the winter of 2001, right after the PS/SS movie came out. After seeing the movie I had that feeling memories of being a kid again, and at the time I needed this, so I went out and bought the books.

When I first started reading the Potter books I was going threw a very rough time. I was 21 / 22, It was the first time I lived away from my parents. I had my first apartment who I shared with my mentally and physically abusive boyfriend. (now ex boyfriend!!) I had lost my job and was now work part time making minimum wage, plus many other nasty things going on with my life.

Reading the Potter books gave me a way to escape my everyday, drama filled life. I was able to not only feel for, but in a way connect with Harry, even though he was an 11 - 14 year old boy who just happen to be a wizard and I was a 21-22 year old woman aka muggle!

All in all Harry has seen me threw the hard times and help me think a little more clearly. "If this young boy can go threw what he has and still have high hope's, friends, and a life, then so can I!"

It shows that you can still become a wonderful person even under the worst circumstances. Look at Harry. It also puts so much emphasis on the importance of friendship and doing the right thing no matter what the cost. Brilliant, really.

These books make me really happy and give me a hobby. I'm waiting to graduate right now, I'm getting ready to move, and all my friends are gone. These books also renewed my dream to become a writer and jogged my imagination. They're also good clean fun and it just makes me happy to read them and talk about the stories.

What have the books done for me? Well, they have opened me eyes to a whole new world of writing and creativity. I have never read a fictional story containing so much realism, that you can often realte to in your current day-to-day problems. I think its fantastic how a series meant for kids can bewitch and enchant people of all ages. I could sit and read it for hours, never finding myself bored with all the twists and turns J.K. Rowling has put in. She has created such a ledgend its amazing! Honestly I can say that Harry Potter has become a huge part of my life. It inspired me to read and write on a different level. Now when I read a book, I find myself looking for foreshadowing and coinsidences within the plot of the book. And when I wirte, I find myself thinking ahead and adding twists and other various things to make it interesting! All in all, I can say Harry Potter has changed my life in many ways for the better!

Have Fun Posting! :)

Well, I've always loved to read books, so HP wasn't the first series I was ever interested in reading or anything=) But they have given me what any great book can give--an escape, a reason to use your imagination. A great hobby. Also, I tend to look into foreshadowing more when I read other things now. Before, I just read stories as they went along and didn't try to guess what would happen at the end.

Although I don't think I've ever read a book that I didn't end up liking, I think HP are my favorite books.

I've always liked reading a lot..and these books were unlike any other book I had read. HP gave me something to obsess over, (ok ok, I'm not really obsessed) but spend hours searching for clues, and posting here. It also opened my imagination to what really could be out there.

They've done many things for me. One of the things is a closer relationship with my dad. You see, he lives in Saudi Arabia because he works for the oil company there. I don't see him but once a year, and it isn't for very long. So when the Harry Potter books came out, we started to get to know each other more. I know it sounds very strange that I don't know my own dad that well, but no one's life can be perfect right? Anywho, we always see the HP movies together when he's in the US and we love to discuss the things that go on in Harry's world. So yeah, the books have done great things for me :)

They started my library. I'm not kidding. Before reading the Harry Potter books I only read realistic fiction... I thought fantasy books were beyond stupid, as nothing in the books could ever actually happen in real life. I used to be obsessed with the "Baby Sitter Little Sister" books by Anne M. Martin, some of which aren't hardly 100 pages long (before reading HP I think the longest book I'd ever read was 300 some -- it was a Nancy Drew story) and, if I was still stuck in that, one shelf in my room would probably be taken up. With Harry Potter came the entire fantasy genre. Now I have nearly six shelves filled with thick fantasy books... my own personal library. :D

Nah seriously its a great series where you can just pick up any of the books and delve into the world of Harry Potter and enjoy the trio battle their way through school. It's a welcome break from work or the TV or going out jsut a nice way to relax really

The books haven't changed my life or anything quite so corny as that, but they have really encouraged my limitless imagination to go even further. I've always been a dreamer, thinking about the world in non-rational ways, and so reading a series about a boy wizard and the world of magic really accelerated my imagination.

It's been quite enjoyable!

They've definitely become a part of me; can't imagine life without them. They've made me much more imaginative, and also made me a better writer. Also, they got me interested in fantasy and science-fiction books, which I now read ravenously. They help me relax, give me something to do when I'm bored, and overall just make me a better person. I love Jo so much for writing them!

Besides being an absolutely fabulous way to spend time, reading the books makes me happy. They transport me into a world with problems like ours, but it is a world full of imagination, potential, and humanity. Through the books, I can see our own world more clearly. Also, they have given me inspiration through beautiful creativity, writing, and characters. In a way, the Harry Potter books show me my own potential and standing. I can no longer imagine my life without the Potter books, they've really become a strong influence in my life and the lives of friends around me. They really are wonderful novels, and I'm sure many of us would agree that we should give a great big THANK YOU to, who else, JK Rowling!

Oh, and the fifth book gave me strength to sit through four hours a day of boring summer school...

... Oh, And they relax me.

Now really people, what more would you want in a single series?

The books have done a lot for me... mainly they've exposed my nerdiness to my entire family. :) I made my husband read SS and CoS with me *on our honeymoon* (yeah, I know) and he got completely hooked, too. I also got my mother-in-law and others to read them, and now when topics are scarce I can just say, "So what do you think will happen to Snape?" and then we all get talking. We've had so much fun together debating and discussing the books, it's been a blast.

And although I've always loved to read, I never quite made time for it until I read the HP books. Now I take time for myself and read, read, read! Like a few others have said, the books have also reawakened my desire to write... now I just have to get off my booty and do it! :)

They made my life look almost perfect, seeing now how wrong things actually can go.
And you know, the characters names in the Dutch books are just so poorly translated, I just HAD to read the English version instead.
And THAT opened a new world for me also.
I got to understand the English language much better and I started reading English books, like Lord of the Rings (yes, you DO get strange looks from the booksellers, I mean when a 17 year old - looking like a 15 year old:p - buys the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and Sword of Cimrahil from you)

And now im moving to England. *

They taught me that there's always a hideway from reality. And it's not a joke. I see those books as the perfect way to get lost into another world and forget about any problem I have. They've also taught me how to keep a writing interesting and how details are important in histories. The bad part is that I can't write short tales anymore... Because I start to write, Then I get lost inside my world and... Woa! its 45 pages long! What happened to the short tale?

Oh, it also taught me that ANY tale is enjoyable, and that childs novels can get to be thousands times better than normal ones (Sorry, Stephen King, but JKRowling can write excellent things for EVERYONE!)

The HP books are great. They've given me an outlet to escape from the world for a while. They've also given me a hobby, and they got me into these forums. They've given me a temporary escape from reality. Bigger imagination. Made me realize a few things about myself, and that not all heroes have to be flawless. They improved my writing a LOT. These books helped me escape my constant brooding and also introduced to a different writing style. I don't know why but the few books I've read that are done by British authors I really like~ the style brings up a certain fondness and nostalgia. They have a telltale writing style which I enjoy.

They taught me not to judge a book by its cover (literally and figuratively),to value friendship and loyalty,to realise that being regarded as a freak by the rest of the world doesn't make you one,and reminded me that children aren't as witless as some adults seem to think ,and that I was once a kid myself...and oh,yes, they've directly led to one of the coolest things in my life-my life on CoS Forums.

Reading the Harry Potter series has been a great distraction from what i used to do. Before, i never really read a lot and would spend a great deal of my time just sitting about the house watching TV or ending up going over the park to play football. When i started reading the series when i was 11 though, it opened my eyes to a world of imagaination. JKR got me into reading! Before i though "Ugh, reading, how boring" When i started to read though, it broadened my imagaination and now i am going through not just Harry Potter books, but all kinds of books. I am pretty much reading at least one book a week and in some cases, three!

Harry Potter has given me a hobby, happiness, and stress relief! There is nothing better than coming home from a hard day at school than sitting down with a Harry Potter book and just drifting off into the magical land of Harry Potter. Well I have escaped from reality into books for as long as I can remember so there is really nothing new in that aspect for me.

One thing they have done is started me writing again. I write all sorts and have had severe writer's block for the last six months - lost loads of my writing through a corrupted disk and other than a few chapters never got motivated to do it again.

Through the HP series I found myself here (running up my phone bill enormously in the process) and found the fanfic section not to mention all the theory threads that my posts tend to get rather epic on.

So for me the series has actually got my inspiration and imagination up and running again. Hopefully on a more permanent basis so my non-HP writing can get back up to speed too.

They've improved my observation skills minisculy, as well as kind of influenced my character in general. I've learned a lot of character traits from assorted characters, mainly from Ron and the twins. The series' also improved my attitude, instead of always objecting and getting irritated at others, like I used to, I now only get irritated, and am actually a bit laid back. :p

These books do so much for me...it gives me an escape that can last for hours when I want to totally get away from everything. The books got me back into reading. Im not a big reader fan, but I love reading when it comes to Harry Potter. They've also open my mind. I don't think Ive thought so extensively or looked into a book so much as I have the Harry Potter books. The Harry Potter books make be think in ways i probably wouldn't and it gives me good anaolgies to use in real life. Like I am always saying... 'o its just like in Harry Potter....'.

I love the Harry Potter books and i can honestly say that they have changed my life (maybe not so drastically, but i'll give HP some credit) They are going to be a big part of history... :) :)

HP books are a huge part of my life. I've read each of them at least 11 times, and I read 2 chapters every night before I go to sleep (It helps me put my mind a ease hehe). It led to this site, which I spend countless hours on everyday! (Oh god, what am I going to do on my vacation next week with no computer?!) Last but not least, it has opened up my imagination. I never really read any fantasy fiction, because I thought it was unrealistic and dumb. HP has shown me otherwise, and has given me something I can love and obsess over. :D

Tom Riddle Is The Half Blood Prince.

Tom Riddle is not the Half Blood Prince as JKR said so, even if you follow the Changeling Hypothesis procedure.

The HP books made me addicted to them, I guess. I'm on the computer and on the forum the whole time this summer so it probably far away made me addicted to the CoS forum!

They're pretty cool...and plus, they're part of pop culture, so you're kinda missing out if you don't read them. That's right folks: blend in with the crowd, follow the fab, read Harry Potter..

I don't think ever ever put so much thought into any book before. For me, the books can be related to everyday life. I've examined myself many times since the theme of choice has been growing clearer all the more. Thinking " Would I be in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff?" I will sometimes be pressed to make a huge decision and I think " You can do what's right or you can do what's easy." They've definately rekindled my love affair with reading. It's hard to find a book that will have me so enthrawled that I can hear my heart banging in my chest or even make me cry. That scene with the miror of Erised when Lily puts her hand of Harry's shoulder and when he looked it wasn't there...well my room was flooded lets just say that. JKR's a great writer, cheers Jo.

They have caused me so spend WAY to much time daydreaming about what might yet happen - especially while I'm supposed to be at work! :tu:

Well,

I really dont know whether this has been discussed ...but

Have you ever seen the great importance, which is really a great message to uor society...??

1] Dumbledore...the world accalaimed accepted and respected wizard....What is he doing....???? A Head Master of a school!!!!

WoW THIS IS AMAZING ..... He is busy in creating the New Generation....

I wish our polliticians understand this and give the proper importance to this aspect...!

and [2] Death Eaters.... they are tyrenical, murderers, have torchured many.... ANd what punishment they get???

Imprisonment ....and NOT hanging or similar. Yes, Dementors kiss is there, but how many times its given as a punishment?? Only once when a cowerd minister feels His life in danger....

JKR>>> I wish there were people like her who could change the society...

Hats off to you ...

When we will meet , a dinner on me...:)

The Death Eaters should be put to death, not put in prison. And Dumbledore isn't a poltician in the first place.

The way I look at it she has changed the world to a certain percent. Look at the legacy of the books. They've been translated into many languages. Millions of people the world over are reading her books. There is a lot of moral subtlety to the stories, though Jo says she never intended to write about morals. I think Jo is a woman of character and the morality just transcended onto the page.

Jo is also involved with humanitarian efforts across the world. I'd say she's changing the world in that aspect as well. I have a great deal of respect for for Jo and I wish there were more people like her in this crazy world of ours.

I think sentiments like these could be best expressed in the How has HP influenced your world? (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=27001) thread, so I'll merge them. :)
