View Full Version : Which browser(s) do you use?
Ali
July 15th, 2004, 2:05 am
It's the big question, now a days...especially, with the recent reports regarding different security issues with browsers which, frankly, had many people worried.
So, my question is, which browser(s) do you prefer and why?
Well, as some of you might be aware of ( ;) ), I'm a firefox user myself for a long time now. I've been using it ever since I first downloaded the old version called, firebird and I havent looked back since. I use it because its just flat out better than most browsers (such as IE). Faster rendering time, in my experience. A better support for CSS (http://www.csszengarden.com/) and something which IE lacks, is the ability to show transparent PNG images (such as my avatar) properly.
Anyway, more on this later. I'd like to know what you think. :)

The only reason I still use IE is because I'm too chicken (and technically inept) to change over. It's what the machine came with.

Used Firefox since Ali promoted it on here, and have never looked back. It's lovely and fast and has cool add ons and is more secure (apparently), and is just plain better and nicer than IE. The fact it's free and open source is only a plus.
Internet Explorer's days are numbers, especially as there's no new releases after IE6, expect bundled with Windows. I mean... lets face it, IE wouldn't be where it is not expect for the fact it comes with Windows and users are ignorant or other browsers. Or else we'd all be on Firefox ;).

Thats a good topic because I'm just searching for a new browser, my stupid IE gives me errors all the time and Netscape does not support certain things.
So I would have to install Internet Explorer again or get a new browser.
Does Firefox support design elements like IE filters too?

I've been using Firefox since TheWizard started his mass advertising campaign ;) I don't really hate IE but in recent times it's been playing up and I didn't have the no how to work out the problems myself :D

I used firebird for the longest time until I got my then new laptop, and I stuck with IE, as it was installed and my files had been imported, but the danm thing kept crashing, and taking more than it’s fair share of memory, I upgraded both the HD and the ram and installed firefox, and would not use anything else,
Someone posted a link to hundreds of add-ons for FireFox, could they post it again as I missed it, and my idiot brother can’t remember where he saw it, also anyone know if Thunderbird will import .pst files

I really like the tabbed browsing feature. And the built-in pop-up stopping. And the e-mail client bundled into Mozilla. And images load noticeably faster with Mozilla than with IE.
Y'all should note, though, that Mozilla isn't inherently safer than IE. Mozilla (including Firefox, etc)'s developers said that Mozilla is vulnerable to the same problems that were recently revealed about IE. But, as IE holds 94% of the market, the hackers target IE. And, Mozilla et al. is not interconnected with your OS, so you are a little less vulnerable.

I used to use Netscape, and loved it until I got this new computer, and IE was automatically installed. I loved my IE, it is definitly better than Netscape. But, I have never heard of Firefox (and I thought I was computer literate). Is it really that much better?? I will have to try it, I guess.

Mozilla all the way....tabbed browsing, popup blocker, et. al.
And I'm sure I'll give Firefox a go sometime soon. I'm just waiting for later versions, when the dev. team is able to fix any prominent bugs....
And the big difference between IE and pretty much anything else: Microsoft makes money regardless of the (poor) quality of the product....Mozilla, etc. is all coded by volunteers :-)

I've been using Opera for years, and I love it! I use Firefox from time to time, too; one of my webmail accounts hates Opera, for some reason.
Don't use IE, guys! Please! It's not safe! Even the US Government (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/02/1441242&mode=thread&tid=103&tid=113&tid=126&tid=172&tid=95&tid=99) says not to. Heck, even Microsoft's own webzine Slate (http://slate.msn.com/id/2103152/) admits Firefox is better than IE. Switch! It's easier than you think!

I use Opera for most things these days. I switched over when CoS upgrade vBulletin versions and IE would take minutes to load a single page. Gave Opera a go and haven't looked back since. Sometimes I'll use IE, like when I click a link on AIM and it pulls up IE. Too lazy to change the file type associations! :D I'd switch to Firefox if I wasn't already pleased with Opera.

I don't think that's quite accurate. Mozilla, Firefox and Netscape are all based on the Gecko rendering engine (as well as Camino and perhaps others), but Mozilla's been around for quite a while. Just a semantic difference, but whatever. :)

I use Mozilla 1.4 v. I MUCH prefer it over IE. I wish I could uninstall IE and have it GONE from my computer. I have no problems with pop-ups or ad banners.
Question though. If I have Mozilla, what could Firefox offer me. And I would be nervous to install another browser onto my computer, I don't want to wreck anything on my computer and create crashes.

Too lazy to get anything besides IE. Although I have installed Opera and the latest Netscape.
The problem with Opera is that it freezes once in a while and is a bit glitchy. With Netscape I have to re-install every several months. And now IE is giving me error messages almost every second time I go online.
So I might download an earlier version of Netscape or maybe just go with this Firefox everyone is talking about. :D

If I have Mozilla, what could Firefox offer me. And I would be nervous to install another browser onto my computer, I don't want to wreck anything on my computer and create crashes.
Mozilla (Application Suite, also known as SeaMonkey) is a complete suite of web related applications, such as a browser, a mail/news client, a chat client and much more. Firefox is just a browser, which makes it a better choice if you already have a mail client for example. Also, since Firefox is smaller than the whole Mozilla suite, it's faster and easier to use.
Note, though, that Firefox is not just the standalone Mozilla browser. The user interface in Firefox differs from Mozilla in many ways. For example, Firefox has customizable toolbars.
Can Firefox coexist with Mozilla?
Yes. Firefox and the Mozilla Application Suite use different profiles that don't interfere with each other. In Linux, however, there can be problems starting Firefox if Mozilla Application Suite is already running.
(That's straight from the Firefox FAQ (http://texturizer.net/firefox/faq.html). Hope it helps :).)

I gave up IE years ago and switched to Opera. Ever since then, I have been extremely happy with my browser. It has everything I could ever want, and I'm addicted to the mouse gestures. I use FireFox (obviously) when I'm using my desktop machine. My laptop is a Mac, so I use Safari whenever I'm wandering. Opera's pretty good too, but I don't like it as much as the others. IE's been worthless since Microsoft decided it was "good enough" and stopped trying to make improvements.

But while I was reading through the thread, you guys made me decide to try firefox, its great I've downloaded a theme for it and looks great, it also seems to be quite a bit faster.

I started using Firefox since my IE had an annoying SideFind thingy attached at the side of the browser and wouldn't go away no matter how I attempted to uninstall it. I love Firefox's tab browsing and pop-up blocker (I had Google toolbar in IE but it couldn't block certain sites' pop-ups, eg. mugglenet.com). My IE had a bug in the 404 error pages so it would crash everytime a 404 page appeared. Firefox is much much better. I would love it even more if the personalised coloured scrollbars would be seen in Firefox though. Alt tags doesn't show up in Firefox too. And I can't key in chinese words in Firefox as it would appear screwed up. Reading chinese and other languages in Firefox is so much easier though, as we don't have to manually install the character encodings. It's just the keying-in that's the problem. :/

Always thought it was Australian, because ever time I go to the global site it asks whether you just want to sear for pages in Australia. But maybe it can tell from your IP address ...
Anyway, I've switched to FireFox and its awesome! Highly recommended! I'm going to completely switch to it now, if I could I'd delete IE. Yep, Google is most definately an American company. Their headquarters and main server farm are both located in Palo Alto, CA (USA). Really close to E-Bay headquarters. I drove by both when I went down to Cali and was meadering by the old places where I lived when I was like 2.
Now then as to my browser. Prodominately I use Safari, however my secondary browsers are Internet Explore and Netscape. I really ought to at least try some of the others but I am a lazy bum, and lets face it, for most of what I do on the internet those three are entirely capable of handling my needs.

Currently I'm a big fan of Opera. It has lots of neat browsing features and the OperaMail program is alright too. When I don't use Opera I go with FireFox; it's the browser that renders webpages in the most technically correct manner of all the browsers.
I love my browsers. I do a lot of web design and it's very important to me that viewers can see the pages properly in a variety of scenarios. Right now on my computer I have the following browsers: Netscape 4.7 (ick!), Netscape 6, Netscape 7, Mozilla 1.4, Mozilla Firefox 0.8, Opera 7.2, and of course Internet Explorer 6.
But like others have mentioned, if you're using IE stop now! :) Seriously. Firefox will change your browsing life. It's faster, it's semantically correct, and it's just plain fun. Plus, by not using Internet Explorer you're supporting a competitive environment for browser development which means browsers with better support of various web pages. Plus, you're supporting the development and implementation of web standards (http://webstandards.org/) that will ensure that pages display evenly and consistently across all browsers. I mean, how often have you come across a poorly designed site that works only in IE and falls apart everywhere else? Fight the power! Fight Microsoft! :)

It depends which computer I'm using. I use IE (internet explorer) on my mum's computer, Mozilla on my gran's, and Netscape on my stepdad's. Certain systems handle each program differently, though my mum and gran's computer are almost exactly the same (they were made 2 years apart).

I don't see how the view of avatars depends on your browser... isn't that dependent on the video card you have?

He uses IE... he hasn't even considered a program such as firefox (mozilla)...
I don't see how the view of avatars depends on your browser... isn't that dependent on the video card you have? The view of the avatar itself won't change depending on the browser: an image is an image is an image, and a browser can't change that. What changes is how a browser "reads" the code written to write a webpage. Some browsers do it better than others. The problem is that there are all sorts of bits of code that are supported by some browsers than other. For instance, there's a bit of code that can make your text glow, as lots of people on this board have discovered. :) The thing is that not all browsers will support that bit of code so it might not show up (I can't see it in Opera, but since it makes me crazy anyway, I don't miss it :)). A small thing like that won't affect a lot of stuff, but there can be bigger differences the way a browser interprets the code that will render a page one way in Internet Explorer and anotherway in Mozilla or Opera. IE uers don't notice it too much since most websites are either made while testing in IE or the web designers have gone to great lengths to make sure everything works okay in IE. But if you're using another browser you can see a big difference, and it can get frustrating.
That link I gave above to the Web Standards (http://webstandards.org) site talks about the steps developers and designers are taking to fix thigns like that. Part of that is creating a standard set of tags (bits of code) that will be supported in all browsers regardless of when the page was made. Some things will not make the "final cut" on that list, like that glowing alpha text trick. :) By creating a standard for all browsers to emulate and for designers to work towards, you can create a more standardized website that is available and viewable to more people.
(If you're really interested, you can check out the box model hack (http://tantek.com/CSS/Examples/boxmodelhack.html) problem which explains how some browsers will interpret some lines of code one way, while others will misinterpret it another way. And that can cause problems. It probably won't make a lot of sense if you don't know anything about webdesign, but hey, I try. :))

You need to download a Firefox-compatible version - these are usually about a tenth of the size of the IE versions. Just click the plugin and it should take you to a page where you can d/l it then automatically install it for you.
You should only need two: one for Flash, one for Java, so it won't take too long. It's to save d/l time of the actual program for people who may not want to use Java and Flash.

Currently I'm a big fan of Opera. It has lots of neat browsing features and the OperaMail program is alright too. When I don't use Opera I go with FireFox; it's the browser that renders webpages in the most technically correct manner of all the browsers.
Opera is a pretty good browser too. An ideal solution for those who like firefox, but want something with a less memory-hug. Firefox needs alot of resources, which is my only concern - although you wont notice the difference in speed much unless you open up 30-50 new windows.
Opera has many features built in already, but you can get most of them for firefox as extensions. ( http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/ )
I have them all, expect for Netscape 4.7. It's quite pointless to make websites compatible with it, now a days.

hahahaha I'm the only one who uses konqueror?? I guess it's because I use linux more often than windows. lol I also use Mozilla just for my e-mails because for some reason it looks funny on konqueror. Firefox is great too.

Yeah, I installed it once to catch an error on the forums but then removed it.

I've only been using Firefox for about two weeks now, but I like it a lot, lot, lot better than IE. It's so much faster, I don't get swamped with pop-ups, and the tabs feature is the best. I use Opera sometimes too, but I really prefer Firefox.

Have not got a clue which browser I us to be honest with you, all I care about is the fact that the net works and if it does then that is fine with me.

Definately Firefox, nice simple clean design, faster web page loading, lots of extensions + themes and tabbed browsing.
One of the main reasons I switched over from IE was mainly because of the security issues, Microsoft being too lazy to fix these up, and my slow anti-Microsoft Monopolising company feelings surfacing.
I highly recommended anyone still on IE to switch to another browser.

I'm using Slimbrowser at the moment. I've only used IE before, but Slimbrowser is so much better! It's much more organized, practical and just easier to use. Plus I haven't encountered any problems with it.
IE doesn't come close.

Firefox is the most overrated thing since sliced bread. It really is not that great. Yeah, foxes are cute. Yeah, it has a pretty logo. But it's about as useful as a submarine made of Caesium.

Hmm, well I sue Firefox.
I love the tab feature and that it blocks pop-ups. I'm sure it has other groovy features but I don't think I'd know what to do with them if I knew what they were.
It seems to me that there is an uncommonly large number of mozilla/firefox users here. I wonder why that is

FireFox all the way, so far I havn't found 2 disadvantages to it (1 is you have to seperatly download all the plug-ins for it.)
If anyone wants a new browser FireFox is the way to go.

I have a problem with firefox and the same problem with Thrunderbird. Only one problem, though. (Don't want Ali to get upset. :p)
I'm using Neomail for a domain name email address. Firefox didn't allow me to access my mail because I "didn't have the proper session cookie" and my "access is denied!"
Same for when I set up my email address for Thunderbird...same issue. So, I went to IE and got through. So I sacrificed Thunderbird for Outlook Express but I still use firefox. I only needed to get my email running through IE. :p
Oh, and firefox doesn't support frames (in terms of HTML). Which totally sucks, because I like using them.

Could someone please explain what frames are?

I'm not sure how to explain it... but this link might help you... Frames (http://www.lissaexplains.com/frames.shtml) :)

Frames are when a page is made of more than one page positioned together by means of another (frame) page. This can either be using seperate areas, for example to make a menu (an example is here (http://www.pageresource.com/html/frameex5.htm)), or else using IFrames to insert a page into the middle of another (like this (http://www.dyn-web.com/dhtml/iframes/fluid.html)). However, frames tend to be a rather crude method of creating web pages, most competent web developers now use PHP includes as they tend to be more effective, customisable and generally work a lot better :).
The problem, as always, is that Firefox supports W3C standards (standard web commands) wheras IE just makes up it's own tags as it feels like.

One thing I liked about Netscape was that it had special codes you could make use of... another one of firefox's flaw. Hopefully they'll release another version that allows all the codes to be used.

Firefox is definetely the way to go.
I'm having a problem with my java plug in though even though I have the latest one installed. And of my internet banking sites kind of lags...which is strange. It works ok in IE though
I have to resort back to IE when my java related sites don't work properly in Firefox.

I'm using IE and I like it. I know how to customize it and use it and I don't get many problems with it. Its fast and easy to use for me. I've heard a lot of good stuff about firefox but I don't really know if I will switch. The worst I get with this IE are some occasional tracking cookies and popups but with all the security on my computer its fairly easy to keep it under control. There's a chance that I could make the switch one day but until something really bad happens I'm staying with IE :p

I use Mozilla Firefox. I think my dad finally got tired of IE's **** after the latest thing it's been doing, and didn't feel like fixing it, so he downloaded FF. I like it! It seems to take less time to load things (though shouldn't that have more to do with your internet connection than your browser?...not that smart, sorry). I haven't checked out this tabbed browsing thing yet, but I suppose I could right now.

I use Firefox and love it! The tabs are so convenient, so is the popup blocker. And the themes make browsing so much more fun....I love the Crystal theme so much.
I started using Firefox because my dad suggested it....and it's so much better than anything else I've seen (especially Windows...yuck).

I, too, am a Firefox user... I used Firebird, also, before Firefox came out. I like it a lot (tabs and themes rock!) but I don't use it of my own choice. My older brother and my dad are computer people and they put it on my computer. We also had Linux for a period of time. That was interesting. But now we're back to Microsoft.

I've been mainly using Firefox since July this year, but I also use Opera and IE occasionally. For those who are reluctant in trying Firefox, trust me, it works really well. I'm glad I took my friend's advice.

IMHO, IE6 has the best options yet, and althought it isn't the fastest one, it's nice to use. Opera is also cool.
