Ok, I can't find the old SOAD thread, and I apologise if its still around and I missed it, anyway if the old has gone then I want to start a new one for any SOAD fans that might be around.

Anyway, let me know what you think of them.
Which is your favourite member?
Your favourite album?
Your favourite song?
Is there are particular issue that SOAD are associated with that you are interested in (like the Armenian Genocide for instance)?

And well I'd just like to discuss SOAD with anyone who is interested.

I think that SOAD is demeaning toward Christianity...of course they are allowed to say what they want, but so am I, and I think their lyrics are rude, and all their songs are similair, with screaming and loud spooky chords.

In what way are they demeaning towards Christianity, examples?

I think one of the things I would never level at SOAD is the idea that all their songs are similar, in fact I'd say that the complete opposite was true. The complete difference between say Roulette or Mr. Jack and War? or Sugar, proves that that statement is blatantly not true.

In what way are there lyrics rude: Do you mean that they swear and talk about sex and stuff or that they say disrespectful things, once again I need examples?

If you don't like music with those type of vocals thats down to your own personal taste, although I have to say that Serj's vocal range is astounding, it's one of the things most people pick up on first when they describe SOAD's music.

The loud, spooky chord thing is also a personal thing, that doesn't make them bad.

I like SOAD.
I seen them with Incubus back many years ago when both bands were just starting to get popular. By far the best concert I went to.

Favorite song of thiers is probably Spiders.

I'm sorry if I offended you; all this was of course, my opinion and taste. I recieved the CD from a friend...I don't remember the lyrics precisely but in one song (a popular one, I forget the name) the lyrics said 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.' If you don't know, these were the words said by Jesus as he was dying on the cross. I felt they were used in an extremely rude way considering that SOAD is open that they are not Christians. I also remember a comment about Angels. Just because one does not believe something, doesn't mean they should be demeaning toward the subject. I am Christian but I don't go around bashing Atheithists or Muslims. I respect all Religions and beliefs.
Please feel free to argue the point but I was offended by their lyrics.

I wasn't offended, its just that you stated certain things as if they were fact when they clearly are not.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure why you would be offended by those lyrics, there are bands out there that are definately anti-chritian. I don't think SOAD are anti-christian as such, they are probably anti-organised religion as am I, though I am not anti-christian far from it, I just think that organised religion is far removed from what it should be.

I get the strong impression that you think SOAD are muslim or something and are mocking christianity, when that couldn't be further from the truth.

Their families come from a country (Armenia) that was the very first christian nation, so if they were any religion they would most likely be christian.

I also know that they believe in god, just not in organised religion.

If it was a song by a christian rock band you probably wouldn't be offended, I'd understand if they were saying anything bad about christianity, but they aren't.

That particular song is about a friend who committed suicide, so it isn't that they are trying to be offensive to christians.

The lyrics that mention angels are: "I cry when Angels deserve to die" those lyrics could be interpreted in many ways, I can't tell you what those lyrics mean, as SOAD like to leave their songs open to interpretation.

I love their self titled album! My favorite song is the first one the self titled album...sorry, i don't the name of it. My fave is also Daron. I'm a Christian too, and the first song refers Christ as being a female, and it says 'the falling of Christ'. I see how that is offensive, and i do find it offensive, but i don't take it to heart. They believe what they believe.

My mother HATES System of A Down, but I actually really like them..partly because she doesn't, but oh well.

My favorite album of theirs is probably Steal This Album! because it sounds like they put more variety into their music on this one.

Regarding the Christian thing, there are musicians out there that are far more offensive towards Christians and Christianity, personally I'd be far more worried about them.

I do know that they believe in God, in some form, which to me is fair.

People are entitled to their beliefs and personally I think life is far too short to let things so trivial be an issue.

I like a lot of bands just because I disagree with some of the things they believe doesn't mean that I can't or won't enjoy their music.

Whatever, auroroftheorder: Obviously you don't like them because you think they are anti-chriatian which I personally don't think is true, I know for a fact that some members of their families are still chritian even if SOAD aren't, I don't believe they would say anything that was meant to be offensive to their own families.

It just seems to me that you have taken a dislike to them because you believe that they are anti-Christian, which leads me to assume (based also on your earlier comments reagarding Serj's "screaming" and your claim that all their songs sound the same) that you are unable to listen to them objectively, so I don't see how you can enter into a real discussion of their music.

There are issues I don't agree with them on, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying them because there is too much about them that I love, in fact their willingness to say how they really feel and their taking a stance on issues (like the war in Iraq) that have got them in trouble in the past, even when they know that it may lose them fans is one of the reasons I love them.

For that reason alone I can't hold things like over them, they have said many times that they don't expect fans to follow them on all issues and that fans should make up there own minds, so it is clear to me that they don't expect fans to agree with them on everything.

But your opinion of them is entirely down to you, I just didn't like that you slammed their music because you think they are disrespectful towards Christianity.

Besides you say you like the Smashing Pumpkins: what about the lyric "God is empty, just like me" is that not just as offensive?

autumn_ashes: I find it odd that you can't remember the name of your favourite SOAD song, but I also know that not everyone takes much notice of what track they are listening too on an album. *shrug*

To wrap this up, I have some closing...remarks. I did not think that SOAD were Muslim, I thought that they were Atheists or (less so) Satanists. I am very good at being objective when looking at issues. If you gave me a piece of paper with SOAD's lyrics, I would be offended, and not want to hear the band, whether it was rock, jazz, nostalgia, punk etc. Secondly, if you gave me a CD with SOAD's songs (the lyrics perhaps changed to humming) I wouldn't like them. My dislike for the music itself didn't affect my dislike for the lyrics, and vice-versa. Also, I have no problem with people of other religions...people who wish maybe to sing about that religion. The thing that is offensive to me is the fact that they comment on others religions that they do not believe in.
I do not think any less of you for listening to this music, and I hope you don't dislike me for not liking it...everyone has different tastes and morals...I merely posted on this forum my opinion (what else are we supposed to discuss here?)
Thank you also for telling me your interpretation of the lyrics...I will take them into consideration.
Bye

About the Smashing Pumpkins (I forgot to include that in my last post...)
First of all Billy Corgan is open about being a Christian, and you can find many references to it in his music (for example in the song Thirty Three: 'Steeple guide me to my heart and home.')
Secondly you are misinterpreting the lyrics (as I admit I may have been on my first post.) He is saying that he looks to God because he is empty (perhaps emotionally exhausted/depressed) and he finds no comfort from Him...thus 'he is empty.'
Again thanks for the discussion :)

I apologise if I misunderstood anything you said in your first post, but I was merely reacting to your points.

I felt that you were unfairly judging SOAD's music, because of your displeasure at what you felt was their disrespect towards Christians, but I only felt this because some of the things you said were incorrect:

"All their songs sound similiar" absolutely not true, and I felt if you had listen to them with no bias, you could not reasonably say this about them...

That Serj screams: Yes he does but that is by no means all he does, as I pointed out Serj has an amazing vocal range.

Spooky chords: possibly, but that certainly isn't all they do.

Its almost as if you heard one song, from your comments, probably Chop Suey and based your entire opinion of SOAD's music on that, which (if true) I think you'll agree is hardly fair.

In response to your point that you were merely giving your opinion, of course you were, and I was reponding to your comments, as is usual in a discussion, in fact its almost the entire point of this messageboard.

Yes, I think I've heard every single SOAD song ever, besides the ones they haven't released yet. I love Aerials. :)

Well, I like Smashing Pumpkins - thats a common point, Weezer, RHCP, Foo Fighters, Deftones all sorts of stuff, I like Black Eyed Peas, Outcast and Missy Elliot too...

I think you said they were you're favourite band in The Greatest Band Ever Thread, I posted in there as well.

You (daronisgod) have a pretty diverse taste in music (as I do...)
I don't think a thread about the Smashing Pumpkins will last (as they are disbanded) but I have a question about Billy Corgan...Do you know what he is doing now? I have heard rumors that he is doing a solo album but I'm not sure.

Just thought I'd let anyone who's interested know that there are new SOAD tour dates, and a new track has been leaked called Cigaro, its an amazing song.

I'd post a link but the lyrics aren't exactly family friendly, so to anyone who's interested go to the official SOAD messageboard to hear the new song and also to find out about the tour dates.

..the lyrics said 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.' .. Please feel free to argue the point but I was offended by their lyrics.

That's what I thought at first too, and actually, the words were ' Father, Father, why have you forsaken me?'. But when I though about it, a lot of people ask this question in times of desperation.

Wow, this thread certainly got off topic. Well, I only have their Toxicity album, but I like to pop it in every once in a while. I really like Aerials, Toxicity, Jet Pilot, and Atwa. At some times, they (their sound) remind me a bit of Incubus; most likely because the two were associated with each other for a long time.

I saw SOAD at the Gold Coast Big Day Out yesterday and they were fantastic. It was definatly one of the days highlights for me - the crowd went off. They played lots of older songs as well as their newish ones. I had only ever seen them once before at a previous years Big Day Out and i'm glad i got to see them again. I didn't realise how long their hair has gotten! Great set all round :)

You're so lucky, I have to wait until June to see them.

Daron's hair is really long and John's is pretty long to, especially compared to how long it used to be.

Really?!?!? My hometown is Manchester! Whens the concert?

All the tour dates are on the official site in the news section, the one in Manchester is on June 14th, if you want to go, get your tickets quick because I think they're going to sell out soon, they've already sold out two night at Brixton Academy in London and have added another.

Thankfully the MEN Arena is pretty big so the tickets aren't selling too fast.
