I'm into a lot of rock and indi bands, and just wanted to dedicate a thread to all you Muse fans! I think they are such a brilliant band, they have great tunes, and amazing lyrics. They can perform really well, and basically rock. My favourite band member (well there is only three), is Matt Bellamy, he writes most of their songs, and is lead singer and guitarist.
If anyone else likes Muse then reply!

Hey,
I tried starting a thread on Muse a few months ago but no one was interested. Glad to see I'm not the only fan on this board! Matt Bellamy is really a genius. I think they're going to be one of the most important bands of this decade.
I love how he plays the piano! I play the piano myself and he's amazing!
Oh, and on the shallow side, girls, there's something about Matthew that I can't quite explain...:eyebrows:

Yes. Muse are a great band. I saw them in concert some weeks ago, fantastic concert, i must say. They know how to put on a show.
I think it's a great thing the way they use a piano. So it isnt just distorted guitars

I'm sorry to say that I had never even heard of Muse until about an hour ago, when my sister encouraged me to listen to "Time is Running Out", telling me it was one of the most amazing songs she'd heard in awhile. I agreed with her almost immediately. It's a gorgeous song.
Now I'm eager to hear more of their work. Any specific titles that I should start out with?

Yes! Buy their album Absolution immediately. There is a reason why classical music lovers all over the world praise this album so much. It's full of orchestra's and piano solos but it still rocks hard. Bellamy is also my inspiration. I really want to learn to play the piano like him.
Yes, that part in the Time is Running Out video is so cool.
I don't like their latest video actually, they tend to overdo things sometimes. But some other videos are really great, like Bliss, Feeling Good, or Time Is Running Out.
Oh, I like Matthew better with black hair...;)

You met Matt Bellamy, you actually met him!!!!!! I'm so jealous of you, what did he say, word for word??? :upset:
I think I'm getting slightly obsessed with him, and their music! There are so many good songs, I love them all. Time Is Running Out, Hysteria, The Small Print, Dying Thoughts of a Atheist, Falling Away With You, Feeling Godd, New Born, Plug in Baby, Showbiz, Citizen Erased, Space Dementia, Map of Your Head, Sunburn, Muscle Museum...
As you can see the list of their great songs lasts for ages, every song rocks!!!

Not many people have heard of them outside of Europe and the UK, I think.
I have the DVD version of Absolution. There wasn't much there to see, but maybe that's just me.
Muse came to Pinkpop and Rock Werchter, and they also gave a concert in October, and I wasn't allowed to go.:upset:

Are they now becoming famous in America then, because I thought most Americans haven't heard of Muse before?
Chrysalis

They played on Coachella.
They're more well known in the USA now.
Sorry to bring up that awfully tired old debate, but do any of you think they actually sound like Radiohead?
I'll reserve my thoughts for later.

I have to admit, I wasn't too keen on Muse when I heard them the first time but I've listened to a few of their songs (thanks to friends who begged me listen .. and then ignore the other half who were begging me not to listen :D)) and some are really, really good.
I think it's Hysteria, the one with the _amazing_ bass intro ?? I really like that song, only heard it a few time though, and I havn't bothered 'buying' the album.

The Sing for Absolution video if just them in a space ship, and they get in trouble in it, I really don't like that video. Matt looks kinda bad in it, he looks great in others. I mean in Bliss his hair looks wicked, and his just falling the whole time, and is wearing very nice tight leather trousers, if you get what I mean!

Initially when I heard their album (cant remember which one) I thought they were nothing spectacular, but then at Reading '02 (wish I were there this year :(), playing live they were a completely different kettle of fish. They were absolutely awesome and the atmosphere was electric because it was dark and steam from rain just made everyone go wild. That was one performance Ill never forget and after then Ive always liked Muse. Still definitely prefer them live though

Wow, good thread. Muse are definitely one of my favourite bands. Their songs have such great basslines, and are just awesome in general. I only heard of them when Plug in Baby came out, but now i've got all their albums and they all rule. Some of my favourite songs, off the top of my head, are: New Born (that riff is like the best thing i'd ever heard), Dead Star, In Your World, Sunburn, Bliss (it's fun to play), Stockholm Syndrome, TSP...too many more to list.
...And i don't think they sound like Radiohead, from what i've heard of Radiohead. Most Muse songs are more...energetic, imo. Then again, i've only heard like 3 Radiohead songs, so i wouldn't really know.

I would have to disagree with that, I wouldn't say they had a weakest album, I mean Showbiz, Sunburn, Unintended, Uno, and Muscle Museum, they are all great songs!
The video for Butterflies & Hurricanes is amazing, its like all clips of them performing in their recent concerts. It is a great song from Absolution.

Anyway, I adore Muse. They are my favourite favourite band ever ever. I've loved them since their first single came out way back in...was it 2000? I've seen them live twice...they are just amazing.
What would everyone say would be Muse's best album?
I would actually have to say 'Showbiz' is their best album. It's got that normal mix of rock outs and a couple of slowy-type ones, but although the bulk of the album is the same-old same-old of 'Sunburn', 'Sober', 'Muscle Museum' etc, they are excellent, quality songs that have such well built lyrics that it surpasses the more 'shouty' next two albums.
Muse have also got that amazing thing going on that is very akin to Franz Ferdinand - in every song there is a complete twist - it's very hard to describe, but it's as if a few seconds of the song are either completely different to the rest of it, or there is a contrasting beat or harmony or something that changes the song from just another alternative track to an amazing one.
And yes, I also love Matt Bellamy :)
What's everyone's favourite Muse song?
Chrysalis
November 3rd, 2004, 1:57 pm
Actually, I like only a few songs from Showbiz. It is a very typical Indie rock album, in my opinion. Nothing very special, although Muse's basic style does come through.(Orchestra's, contrasts in dynamics)
Favorite Muse song? That's got to be a tie between Butterflies & Hurricanes and Stockholm Syndrome. I love the fact that Butterflies hardly contains any guitars. It's basically just classical instruments. And don't even get me started on Matt's piano solo! I play the piano and he is such an inspiration to me. He does sound like Rachmaninov.
As for Stockholm Syndrome, the real twist in the song is the switch of the typical quiet verses and windstorm choruses. It is, in fact, the other way round. And extremely loud verse and a lush orchestral chorus that nevertheless keeps up the pace of the rest of the song is very unexpected and not something that many bands would've thought of doing or would dare to do.

What connection does that have with the topic?
LaurenG
January 10th, 2005, 9:03 am
I honestly don't think Muse sound like radiohead (getting back to a question posted a while back). I associate Radiohead with songs that are more socially related and Muse being more personnal/relationship orientated and as such the feel from their music is different. Plus Radiohead seem more experimental (espescially their last 3 albums) in the instruments used and structure of the songs, whereas Muse seem more classical. I love both bands equally as much though.
Muse is definitely one of the best live bands i've ever seen. I've seen them at the Big Day Out and when they came to Aus last September. Amasing! I mangaed to save one of the balloons also :), had to fend of a few people to get it but it was worth it. Their songs are so amasing that they don't need to put on a 'show' because their songs really communicate with the audience, but with adding the 'show' it was phenomenal!
I think my favourtie Muse songs would have to be Sing for Absolution and New Born. Though Absolution is certainly one of the best albums ever made Origin of Symmetry is my favourtie album, can't tell you for sure why though. I haven't got Hullabaloo yet but i cetainly plan to aquire it at some stage.

Your absolutly right :). That element of classical in their music is certainly one of the reasons why i'm drawn to them so much.
Matt says Muse are going in a new direction...he mentioned the Strokes, and he also said that their next album is going to be a lot more optimistic. I can't wait!!
Ooooo.....interesting. Do you happen to rememeber where Matt said this? I would love to have a look at it. Although i like The Strokes i can't imagine Muse sounding like that. hehe. Muse always seem more....powerful (?? for lack of a better word) then The Strokes music. Perhaps i'm just being too literal in my imagining of this new direction.
I'm a little out of the Muse news loop at the moment, does anyone know if they have started recording it yet?
A slightly random question....The other day i heard a cover of 'Feeling good' (can't actually remember who did it - it was in some movie), does someone know if that song is a Muse original or did Muse cover it also? Just curious.
By the way Chrysalis, are you a PJ fan too? I assume so by looking at your pic. Me too! I saw her live at the bigging of December, it was great!

Muse also covered 'Feeling Good'. The original was by Nina Simone, I think.

Yep. It was Nina Simone. Matt also happened to say that he adored men who sounded like women and vice versa, which is why he likes Nina.:D
Muse haven't begun recording yet. They won't till after a few months. As for new sources, it has been quoted by virtually every music mag there is out there.:)
Truthfully I can't imagine Muse sounding like the Strokes either. Although remember the track Endlessly? That was a disco one...but again Muse wouldn't be Muse if they didn't throw in a couple of choirs too.:D

Oh... Hehe  I don't even rememeber the last time i looked at a music mag so i am quite behind.
PJ was fantastic (nothing to Muse's live show but still great). She played down by the water which i was extremly happy about but i was also hopeing she would play Rid of Me but alas, not this time. She did play it when i saw her at the Big Day Out a few years back and that was the highlight of the show for me.
But perhaps this is the wrong thread for me to rabbling on about this.....sorry.

January 12th, 2005, 1:37 pm
Am I the only one who thinks that Muse are going to be one of the most important bands of this decade? In my opinion what they're doing now is pretty revolutionary. Yes, they are extreme, and a lot of people find that hard to swallow. But they really know how to put on a show and at the same time use great skills.
LaurenG
January 15th, 2005, 7:47 am
I think Muse will be important in terms of their live shows, along with bands like Marilyn Manson and Rammstein. Bands that not only get up and play music but who entertain the crowd and add to their music with visual effects. These are bands that i think of as artists and not just musicians. They put thought into all aspects of the music and Muse definatly belong in this category.
I don't think Muse are that extreme though. I call extreme Radioheads change to Kid A from OK Computer. From doing a very guitar album to an album where almost no guitars are used and experimenting with all sorts of electronic stuff etc. Doing that type of music was extreme to me.

Muse can be so over the top in their songs that it took me a while to accept them...
But I had the fortune of going to a Muse concert it blew me away. It was by far the best show I've been to. Although the single disappointment was that they didn't play 'Sing for Absolution', my favourite song of theirs...

Muse are great live, bit sad they're not coming back for the Big Day Out again (aus and nz). i thought it was kind of funny that one of their songs (feeling good) was used as the promo song for 'medical investigators' in the ads. (well in australia anyway) that seemed a little bit weird, but also annoying that they didnt get credit for it like usual.

I have adored Muse since high school, very long time ago! I have all the albums and every last one of the singles! Yes! Every last one! Amazon and Ebay are great for collecting Muse memorbila! My fav album is "Origin of Symmertry" and my all time fav song is "Bliss" although they did release "Please, Please let me get what I want" which I think was a Smiths song. Thats good even though it lasts for 2 minutes or so!
I have the Hullaballo DVD and book of Muse, which talks about Muse's history. They were called "Baby Rocket Dolls" after a Japanese porn film at first! My bpyfriends ex has met Matt Bellamy! She jumped on him in Manchester and he went mad at her! Wouldnt you if a big girl jumped on your back suddnely? She was crying and saying he wa a nasty pig! Thats why my boyfriend hates Muse and he thinks they are ripping off RadioHead. He promised to take me to the Manchester tour in November 2003 and then the day before told me he didnt have the tickets, but he thought he'd cheer me up by taking me to see the premire of S.W.A.T! Im still so angry and annoyed at him! My ex was going on how amazing it was!

Well i'd certainly be mad if some girl jumped on my back. Can't say i blame Matt at all. In fact i think a good pat on the back is in order. What did she expect? for him to turn around and plant a big wet kiss on her?!

Ouch! Your very forgiving, i don't think he'd still be my boyfriend if that happened :). Swapping a Muse concert for S.W.A.T!!! No Way!! i don't think furious would cover how i would have felt. Especially when SWAT is a shinning example of all that is going wrong with hollywood cinema (in my humble little opinion). If this little example has taught us anything its to not leave getting Muse tickets to anyone but yourself! :)

Origins of Symmetry (in my opinion) is very under-rated. Although Aboslution is, quite clearly Muse's best album OoS has (what i think to be) one of Muse's defining songs. In the same way that the "Ok Computer" album summed up Radiohead, i reccon that 'Micro Cuts' (OoS) and 'Butterflies And Hurricanes' (Absolution) are the two Muse songs that really tell people what they're all about. Like, 'Micro Cuts' is probably the Muse song that no one on earth BUT Matt Bellamy can sing, and 'Butterflies and Hurricanes' is so diverse and has some of the best instrumental work i've ever heard.
But thats just me... :p

there are a few bands that i could listen forever and ever. bands like travis, coldplay, keane recentely and muse. muse make a beautiful music that can be both peaceful and disturbing, calm and wild and that's why i love them...i truly love their music. space dementia - "you make me sick, because i adore so..." i am just blown away by the lyrics of this song each time i hear it.
some my favourites are plug in baby, butterflies and hurricanes, hysteria (i don't know one person who doesn't go crazy when listening to this one...) and endlessly (no comment on this one...perfect). i never get tired of them.

The opening post of this thread classified Muse as "indie" but I have to protest, Muse are no more "indie" then Britney Spears.
I agree that they (whoever writes the melodies) have talent but to my taste they are bit to "wishy-washy" to ever really stand out if you under stand what I mean. They are nice melodies but rather bland and sort of fade in to the background compared to more original bands on the radio. Muse's songs never stand out from the crowd for me and I know my radiostation music manager feels the same and often pass them on to the C-playlist (it's a student radio with alternative of all sorts).
Someone compared them to Radiohead and I think that is rather unfair. I'm no big Radiohead fan even though I listen to them occasionally. But they are very original, what they do with their albums is unlike anything else, Kid A, for example, sounds like U2 gone jazz... Muse is to mainstream to ever stick out like that and I doubt they will ever be named among the really big and influencal rock acts of the naughties, like Radiohead, The White Stripes, The Hives or Coldplay.
Chrysalis

Lol. Well you are entitled to your opinion. But Muse are just an important a band as Radiohead, because of their experimentation with classical music. Perhaps you don't listen to Rachmaninov or Tchaikovsky, so you won't understand. But their chord progressions are really similar to classical music. I've heard a lot of people dismiss Muse without ever really knowing anything about music history so I'm rather critical of the skeptics.
The Hives, are in my opinion, just a really bad band. Their songs get on my nerves after 3 times. I have to agree that the other three bands are really great but neither the White Stripes nor Coldplay are really significant in terms of being experimental.
By the way I own all Radiohead albums except Pablo Honey and own also a load of B-sides by them, I own all of Coldplays and again lots of B-sides, and I have all of Muse's album and again, almost every other studio track they recorded. So I think I know what I'm talking about.
About Muse being indie...I never look at labels so I wouldn't know. I can't stand a lot of "indie" bands like Bright Eyes so I guess that's a good thing if they're not indie.
I'm surprised though still that you would proclaim the Hives to be a better band...give me a break. Or the Killers? I imagine you like all of these unoriginal "indie" bands?

I don't see their influences form classic music history as experimental. There have been plenty of bands who have brought in classic music in to rock (Whitesnake, U2, The Smashing Pumpkins to name a few) and I don't see any originality in the way Muse does it.
[quote]The Hives, are in my opinion, just a really bad band. Their songs get on my nerves after 3 times. I have to agree that the other three bands are really great but neither the White Stripes nor Coldplay are really significant in terms of being experimental.
I'm didn't put equation marks between experimental and influential. The Postal Service are experimental, to say the least, but are not an influential band, for example. The Hives and The White Stripes have made an impact on modern music by brining back basic rock, guitars, drums base, to an music industry over loaded by Britney Spears type pop, not because they are particulary experimental. If you don't like them, that's your choice, I'm simply saying they are influential because of what they have brought to the music scene.
About Muse being indie...I never look at labels so I wouldn't know. I can't stand a lot of "indie" bands like Bright Eyes so I guess that's a good thing if they're not indie.
"Indie" is short for independent, it's a term for a band developed outside of the corporate music industry, not a music style (although over the past years it has become a lable for a certain type of music).
I'm surprised though still that you would proclaim the Hives to be a better band...give me a break. Or the Killers? I imagine you like all of these unoriginal "indie" bands?
Where in my post does it say I even like The Hives? Where in my post do I mention The Killers? I'm saying what I think about Muse, I think they are to bland. What other bands I listen to has nothing to do with my opinion of Muse. Although you seem far to eager to judge me and put a lable on my taste in music simply because I don't share the same taste in music as you.
Chrysalis
February 9th, 2005, 1:00 pm
How can you judge now whether Muse'll have an influence? They've only put out their third album now. I'm surpised you can make such early judgements. This band has only existed under their current name since 1999 and that's when they released their first album. Even the Hives have only existed for a few years....how can you determine if they're influential already?
Blending classical music and rock IS experimental. Perhaps you have a different definition.
Postal Service are not experimental.
Matt's a brilliant pianist. Most of these so-called 'bands' can't even play their instruments properly. Matt just does it by listening to the greats of music. Have you heard the song "In Your World"? Did you know that the beginning is inpired by a Toccata by Bach? Or have you heard the live version of Screenager? (Since you are already so convinced about Muse's position in music history I imagine you'll know all these songs) Did you know that the improvised piano in the beginning is taken from Prelude in C#m by Rachmaninov? How is this somewhow 'less important' than the avant-garde jazz of The National Anthem by Radiohead?
Not all classical music is the same. There are different ways in which one can mix rock and classical. '70s prog comes first to mind, but those songs are long, drawn out, pretentious and don't rock a bit. Muse can actually say everything that an old prog-rocker has said in songs of 5 minutes instead of mini-operas of 20 minutes.
Look here, I've seen a million bands all of whom claim to have 'brought back the basics to music'. The Hives don't stand out in that respect and their songs aren't even good. The White Stripes make good music but are not influential in any way.
The basics of rock have never been gone, but then again I don't know what or where you've been listening.
Perhaps you're just biased towards the Hives because you're Swedish.
Muse are not bland. I don't know what you've been listening to for you to call them bland. You don't even seem to explain properly. Is it the chord progressions? No one's till now been able to give a detailed explanation of why they think Muse's songs sound the same all the time.
I've detailed my explanation of why IMO Muse will be such an important band in previous posts on this thread. Perhaps you'd like to read them through again.
Muse are reintroducing the words 'showmanship' and 'skill' in current music. Something that's been sorely lacking.
I know what "indie" means. I meant that what usually falls under the category "indie" is just rubbish. Like Death Cab For Cutie or the Postal Service.
Why are Muse not indie? They are certainly not corporate. Till recently they were(and perhaps still are) signed with Mushroom Records and PIAS.
Look, I'm not attacking you by any means. I just find it difficult to believe that you'd make such grand statements without being able to explain them or make them sound convincing.
Morgan
February 9th, 2005, 1:07 pm
You are taking this awfully personal. I don't like Muse for the reasons I stated above, I think they are bland, I think their music blends in to the background among all the other music on the radio.
I think there are a lot better bands out there but I'm not letting that influence what I think about Muse, you're the one bringing in my music taste in this. Again, I never said I liked The Hives. Who I like and why has nothing to do with why I don't think Muse is particulary good.
To be honest, you seem to take it as a personal insult that I don't like Muse, I'm telling you why I don't like Muse and you keep attacking me and my taste in music because of it. I'm not saying they are a bad band that makes bad music, I'm just saying I don't like them. And I told you why I don't like them. Not everybody has the same taste in music so stop trying to insult my taste in music just because it's not the same as yours.
And, FYI, I love U2, they are my house Gods, if you feel like debating their music with me over in the U2 thread, you are more then welcome. I promise I won't hold your love for Muse against you.

I'm not taking this personal. But you can't even explain properly why you don't like a band. If you don't like them, that's cool. And I didn't attack your taste in music, merely said that the Hives are rubbish but you mentioned them, so there. I can't help it if you happen to like Death Cab For Cutie. They're just an example of why IMO there's something wrong with indie music today.
Since this is a thread about Muse obviously I'm debating why I like them and I don't think they're bland. But you seem to think that it's an affront if I confront you with that.

Lets stick with only Muse shall we? Let's not drag The Hives or Death Cab For Cutie in to this, I mentioned Radiohead, The Hives, The White Stripes and Coldplay as examples of bands who have influenced the music scene today at a much greater length then Muse. After three albums they have not created the impact on the music scene as Coldplay has done with two full lenght albums.
Detailed account of why I don't like Muse:
The singer sounds like Jeff Buckley when he sings. His voice doesn't stand out to me and he honestly sounds like, you're going to hate this, the singer of a boy band. He has no real edge to his voice, now, it's not a bad thing, but I like singers with a raw quality to their voice, and this guy doesn't have that.
Their songs, in my opinion, sound to much like what others have done before them, only the others did it better. Some reviewer called them "Radiohead Lite" and I'd have to agree.
There is no real edge in their music either, nothing that makes it stick out and really grab hold of you. It's to easy to listen to, and yes, maybe I'm to pretentious when it comes to the music I listen to, but I don't want music that just flows through my head. I want something to work with. I want to find layers in the music and new twists everytime I listen to an album.
I find their musical "dabbling" annoying, the way their songs mix to many, in my opinion, styles makes for a very uneaven listening experience. Their albums lack a red line through them, connecting the songs. It sounds like they are still trying to find their feet, musically speaking.
And for God sake, remember, this is only MY opinion, what I think of Muse. It's not written in stone or neither is it the absolute truth, maybe I'll love their next album, who knows. They are by no means my least favourite band, they are alright, I don't turn off the radio when they come on, but they are not a band a I like. That's it.
Chrysalis
February 9th, 2005, 5:26 pm
Well, that's all I asked for. I just gave Death Cab For Cutie as an example of a band that I don't like but many Muse-haters do. And I do love Radiohead, they are my favorite existing band(as opposed to the one that's disbanded, The Beatles).
And anyway, what you see as weaknesses of Muse I see as strengths.*shrugs* I'm not a Jeff Buckley fan(I haven't heard much of his music to be honest) but he seems to have influenced a lot of singers.
Personally I listen for things that I understand, like Rachmaninov, maybe you don't, that's cool, but it gives me a completely different perspective on music. That's all I'm saying.

Whoa, your right. Any Muse fan is going to hate that comment. A boy band!!! Well i think its needless to say that i disagree. Being a big Jeff Buckley i will acknowledge similarities (edit: in terms of their abilities) but i really think that each singer stands alone in their own talent. I'll leave it at that.
Lets stick with only Muse shall we? Personnaly i don't see how Coldplay has influenced anything at all. As for The White Stripes they were part of the Hype that surrounded the 'old school' rock reemergence along with the The Strokes and to some extent The Hives and maybe even Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I think thats about the only influence they had. Because the media suddenly focused on this music it brought about the popularity of many bands that have a similar sound. I believe Muse will be seen as being more influencial or a stand out band in the future because of their blending of the classical music and the rock. I think they are completely under recognised for that.
Their songs, in my opinion, sound to much like what others have done before them, only the others did it better.
Do you happen to have any example of band that have done it better?
I want to find layers in the music and new twists everytime I listen to an album. Well i certainly find this when i listen to Muse albums but each to their own...

I do agree with this for Muse's first album, Showbiz. Though as their albums have progressed i certainly think that they have achieved it, definatly with Absolution.

Although this thread is titled 'Muse Rocks!!!' and will naturally mostly draw people who are quite fond of the band, you can still expect discussion about all aspect of Muse, good and bad. In my opinnion thats what this thread is for. Morgan was only expressing her opinnion about Muse and explained why she thought that. That does not equal to 'Muse bashing'. Though given that the title is 'Muse Rocks!!!' if anyone does say anything unsupportive of the band they do have to expect a reply to that. Replying to a comment does not mean anyone is personaly attacking anyone. So please people lets keep discussing and not get nasty :).

I love your signature!:eyebrows:
Muse.mu is darn annoying! It's terribly slow to load but that's probably also my computer's fault.
thanks :D I loved the red hair. But I dunno, Muse.mu works wonderfully for me. I absolutele adore the site...all the random videos, and you can listen to some of the music (which means I dont have to dig for my CD's every time I get on the computer ) but yeah, it's excellent on my computer...I just timed it and it takes about 3 seconds to load.

Muse.mu works well for me also. Though perhaps it takes slightly longer to load then 3 seconds.

How do you all think Muse will do at NME awards? I mean they won Best Live at The Brits...and they are indeed effing awesome live...I really hope they win Best British Band--but that'll probably go to Franz Ferdianand (GRR! I like them and all, but Muse are so much better). Haha, if nothing else, they should win Best Website...Muse.mu is probably the greatest official webiste I've ever seen for a band.
again Best live act!!!! i'm so happy!!!!
i've been thanked twice from Muse for being at their concerts!!! :)
i have to agree with you for the great website!! and it's even better now that i have high speed internet!!!

I just saw the Bliss video clip (on muse.mu- my computer has finally decided to let it work!) and it is SO cool! Best Muse clip i've ever seen...
And why are there two different 'Hysteria' clips? Is it just... because they can?

I love Muse! I was playing with my friend's iPod on random and got "Hysteria". I thought it was a great song, so I bought one of their albums and loved it, so I bought all of them, lol. They made me like "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", a song I generally hate. It was my theme for Valentine's this year. Love Muse.
I'm surprised though still that you would proclaim the Hives to be a better band...give me a break. Or the Killers? I imagine you like all of these unoriginal "indie" bands?
Oh, come on. What an unneccessary stereotype. I like the Hives and the Killers, but that doesn't mean I like eveything of a certain genre. I like the Killers and the Hives and Franz Ferdinand and Snow Patrol, but I also like U2 and Whitesnake. Heck, I like Martina McBride, Kenny Chesney, and Garth Brooks too. I also like Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Celine Dion. I like Metallica and Smile Empty Soul and Muse. I love Elton John, Simon & Garfunkle, The Beatles, The Byrds, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland. I like Oasis and Coldplay. I like Relient K and Mercy Me. If it's noise, I like it. I like some more than I like others, so what's the point in arguing about it? You like what you like.

I do think the Hives and the Killers are unoriginal. That is my opinion. I don't see what is so 'stereotypical' about it.

I didn't say you were stereotypical, I said you were stereotyping the person you were talking to when you said that.
Or the Killers? I imagine you like all of these unoriginal "indie" bands?
She didn't even mention the Killers, you just seem to assume that liking the Hives means she likes the Killers because in your opinion they're both "unoriginal", and hence the same thing. What's the point in lumping stuff together like that? People like different things, so why get all bothered over it? It's their opinion.

Who says they're 'unoriginal'? All bands have similarities to each other.

I assumed so because a lot of people who say that Muse are unoriginal themselves like band whom I consider unoriginal.
I don't see what your problem is. I didn't tell you did I?

I would like to point out that I didn't even say I liked The Hives...But you assumed I did and you assumed I like The Killers. That's a lot of assumptions for something I didn't even say.

I really enjoy listening to Muse. I find I tend to have to be in a certain mindset, or be wanting to listen to a certain type of music to listen to them - but I do that with everyone (apart from Queen :p)
I love their music. Sometimes it is so grandiose, and at other times so understated. I love how it fits with the lyrics of their songs, which I also find to be interesting, thought provoking, and sometimes satisfying. I adore the orchestral elements and how they bring out a visual imagination in me.
Chrysalis
February 22nd, 2005, 4:39 pm
That's true for me too. Sometimes I have a Muse-phase, then I have a Radiohead one...it tends to change. I don't listen to them all the time.
I have to say though that a keyboard player's job in a band is very underrated. While everyone talks about the greatest guitar players many bands don't even have a seperate keyboard player. A good one brings so much more to the music than just 2 guitars and a bass could do.
I love Muse too because they're one of the few bands that put the piano in a central position instead of the guitar.
And it's funny you should mention it. Muse is a band for which I have a 'visualisation' so to speak for every song. It's almost like a videoclip. I know it sounds odd. All I can highlight it with is that when I saw the video for Hysteria I thought it was SO wrong, not at all what it should be. Not many bands do that for me.

I completely agree, Chrysalis!
I love keyboard and piano. I find them to be under used in most modern music. Especially rock music, where a brilliantly played piano can make all of the difference. It can bring a completely different tone to a piece.
Muse certainly put their instruments to good use, and know when to augment them too.
ETA: Yes, me too! That is the only video I have seen, but it was completely different from the pictures in my head. I find I seem to have a little story which goes with each track.

Are you the one who made the quote about the Hives and the Killers? If so then I have got the right person. Yes, you assumed, and an uninformed assumption is also known as a stereotype, which is not only an ignorant way to label people, but can be very hurtful. In this case it's just music, but that way of thinking and assuming alarmed me. And no you didn't say it to me, but I also like the Hives, so the same sterotype was an insult to me as well. I do like the Killers, but I don't understand why you have to start calling people you've never even met "unoriginal" because they have different tastes in music than yourself. Has it ever occured to you that expecting everyone else to think the same way is "unoriginal" in itself?

I do that too! I have only seen the clips for Hysteria and Bliss but for the others when listening to them i just imagine what the clips (in my oppinion) should look like. I'm probably way off though.
Same, i didnt really... well i didnt understand the clip for Hysteria. It didnt seem to me that it had much to do with the song.

Hey, please keep it friendly in this thread.
What is it with music these days and people getting territorial? Agree to disagree.
And if you don't like a band, there is no reason for you to be posting about them for any great length of time. You don't like them, other people do, end of story.
Warnings shall be given to anyone who quotes and attacks another member again in this thread.

I would just like to point out that a stereotype is an assumption about another person. Also that Chrysalis never called anyone who liked The Killers or The Hives unoriginal but said that the bands themselves were unoriginal. I'd also like to say that i myself happen to like The Hives and i wasn't offended by the comment. Ok end of disscussion, promise i won't say anything more.

I too get visualisations for songs :) although the video for Hysteria and what was going on in my head matched pretty closely for me. For me the song was about obsession and i thought the video showed that very well.

Thanks, Lauren.:) I never called people unoriginal. OK, now I won't say anything on the subject again.
Yeah, but I always imagine a band playing in a location...OK, for instance Sing For Absolution, nothing like what it should've been in my opinion. I kinda had the image of a person secretly watching someone they loved...something that was more in accordance with the lyrics.

quote. I read it as "I assumed so because a lot of the people that say Muse are unoriginal are unoriginal themselves." Which doesn't even make sense since I like Muse and so even if she had said that, it had nothing to do with me. *rolls eyes at self* Anyway I'm gonna shut up and go listen to some Muse now.

I have a similar image when i hear Sing for Absolution though not quite, as the song has quite a bit of personnal significance for me. To put it simply, the song is about regret to me. I've often tried to understand the connection between the video to the song. Perhaps the moving from one world to another is a metaphor for moving from one relationship to another. The state of the world they left could represent the state of the relationship. They really don't wanna leave that world hense their detachment during the flight. Hmmmm....don't know just thinking while typing. Perhaps they just thought the video looked cool.
The New Born video has always bothered me, especially since its one of my all time favourite Muse songs. That one really didn't fit with my concept of this song. I always thought of disassociation and disillusionment from society, i don't see how the video shows this.

I saw the video for New Born before I heard the song seperately, alas.:D
The Bliss video seemed just perfect. I wasn't too sure about the vid for Feeling Good though.
Not much news on the Muse front these days, it seems...

Bliss video was great. So simple (im sure it took a lot of time to film though) yet so satisfying. I think i understand the Sing For Absolution clip, i just dont like it. Its not very flattering, i mean in all of the other clips (Matt in particular) they all look great but in this one... it sort of morphs their faces and... well it just doesnt look as good.

I agree with both of you about the Bliss video. Suited the song perfectly, with Mat being a red colour and the others blue and more serene. I love it.

This is so awesome, i was just browsing mugglenet ( while listening to muse, funny enough) and happened along this thread. These guys are so versatile(the change their sounds for every new cd) and the way they integrate piano into otherwise indie-radioheadish alt-rock brit mayhem is too much for my limited word skills, but I guess georgous is a good place to start. Stockholm Syndrome is one of the most intricate and well-written songs ever, and the Bliss-esque piano score in the chorus sends chills down my spine. ROCK ON!
