I love Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's masterpiece detective series Sherlock Holmes! One of my favourite book series' ever! My fave Sherlock Holmes book is The Celerbrated Cases of Sherlock Holmes. Inside there are my absolute favourite one's in the series! The reasoning is, as Mr Holmes would put it, "Elementary, my dear Watson" ...

And now that "the game is afoot" I'm sure alot of people on these boards love Sherlock Holme's too ...

Was Hound of the Baskervilles the one where Holmes comes back to life? If so, anyone know where I can get some info on how he survived a 200 foot fall?

My personal favourite is the Final Problem, when he takes on Moriarty.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is another storie, the one in which Sherlock comes back to life is called "The Return of Sherlock Holmes", and the information in how he survived is told in the first tale of the book, named "The Empty House".

I'd have to say Hound of the Baskervilles, my least favorite is The Valley of Fear. A lot of people have spent a lot of time analyzing the stories, attempting to place their "proper" dates of occurrence, and constructing life histories of Holmes and Watson. A couple of the more interesting bits:

Watson was married two, or possibly three times.
Holmes spent time in America.

I have to say The Hound of the Baskervilles and Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Dozen which if any one remembers the latter was where Sherlock Holmes enlists 12 children to do work for him and each I think where given a shiny shilling with a hole in the centre or was it a shilling cut in half, I can't remember that little detail but they definitely got a shilling.

Love this gif too that I found.

I believe you're thinking of the Baker Street Irregulars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Baker_Street_Irregulars), which are of indeterminate number and didn't have their own "story", but helped Sherlock Holmes out with several cases. He paid them a shilling a day for their help.

I haven't read the stories in a long time, and there are too many to pick only one favorite anyway, but Silver Blaze and the Man with the Twisted Lip come to mind as partiuarly enjoyable mysteries.

Here is a list of all (http://www.citsoft.com/holmes3.html) the Sherlock Holmes stories.

It was a shilling a day, yes I forgot about that. I have to admit I have not read all those books on the list either and the ones I have done where read a long time ago too.

Been a while since I read one, think I’ll go to the library and check out a Holmes book. There was one that I didn’t care for but I can’t remember the name. Did think that Holmes would make a wonderful one or few act play for class once. No one else was on board though did write something else.

I have been a fan of Sherlock Holmes since before High School and that has been a while.
I have all the canon books and many stories written by other authors. I also have many of the radio plays and films. I loved the Jeremy Brett series done for Mystery.
I will always adore the first story, A Study In Scarlet.

I read the stories quite a few years ago, and you've made me realize that it's time to re-visit them. For anyone that likes mysteries; sleuthing; forensics - these are the first and best. Every current author in the same genre, like Patricia Cornwell and Jeffery Deaver, owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Conan Doyle.

Does anyone remember Young Sherlock Holmes - the movie? Chris Columbus wrote the screenplay and although it didn't do well when it was released (1985 - yes I'm old and have a long memory) it holds up well, and the story is excellent. Thought it was a very clever way to show both Holmes and Watson as young men.

Sherlock Holmes and his adventures are the only other books byside HP that I read more than once at least 3 or 5 times. However Doyle is useing a POV what makes it for us readers nearlly impossible to recognise hints ourself. Now I love to read subtle hints and figure things out myself but Watsons POV is just that blind.

But there exist a Book whats focused at this Scotland Yard Inspector Lestrange that one is too very, very interesting esp. because it plays in Holmes world.

This is a good question. Sherlock Holmes is my favorite fictional character. So which is my favorite story? Hmm... I'll go with Hound of the Baskervilles, but more because it is the first story of Sherlock Holmes that I read (back when I was a child).

Did you know that Sherlock Holmes was based on a real person? One of Doyle's teachers, Dr. Bell. (And I don't have a favorite story, because I've never read any of them - but I think I probably should.)

I'm like Rapunzel, and haven't read any of them... ::ducks angry mob of Holmes fans:: HOWEVER, I do plan to read the heap of books my Holmes-crazed father has forced upon me once I finish slogging through War of the Worlds. The TV series is on every Sunday on the Biography channel, or some other channel, and I watch it when I can. Whoever plays Holmes does an awesome performance-- serious, intelligent, loud and really scary when he's happy. :scared:

I've only read one Sherlock Holmes book, *feels very ashamed among Sherlock Holmes fans* but I really liked it. It was The Hound of the Baskervilles.

I absolutely love the stories written by Doyle. I have too many favorites to choose from, but I liked the Final Problem. I also own many of the movies that have Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce playing the famous duo. I actually also got into the cartoon series a little while back (Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century).

I haven't read any Sherlock Holmes recently but I remember borrowing my brother's copy of The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes. When I first discovered the book and started reading A Study in Scarlet I was properly hooked. I love the whole method of deduction; the process of elimination Holmes applied. It was fascinating reading. I read that book from cover to cover...

As for my favourite: A Study In Scarlet. I really enjoyed the way Holmes astounded Watson at first with the accurate conclusions he drew. It was really entertaining.

I'd have to agree with White Raven though - The Valley Of Fear was my least favourite as well. It was a bit too depressing for my taste.

All in all though, the books make for great reading. :tu:

over this summer, i checked out all of the sherlock holmes novels in one big book. i got up to page 900 out of 1100, then school and swimming started and i had to stop. honestly, i liked all of the stories i read, give or take a few, though the hound of the baskerville's stands out. hehe there was a short story on the mystery of the dancing men or something that i liked. and! i have seen young sherlock holmes, and liked it alot! i saw it when i was younger, and over the summer i was sick alot so i rented it. hehe i think that started my reading of all the stories.
