View Full Version : What will you do if Harry dies .. ?

sorry , please don't hate me .... :sorry:
I was just wondring about all the talk that Harry might die in the end , so I thought about how would I take it in if it did happen , I know he's fictional ... but he is really a good fictional friend nevertheless ... :'(
so how would you react to the fact that Harry is dead , if indeed that happens .
again the question is " what if " , not " what may " .... it's a question about your feelings about Harry's death rather than the possiblity of it happening .
thanks .
P.S : if there was a similar thread , then please wipe this one off ...

I'll feel sad, no doubt about it. I wouldn't be surprised though. There is alot of correlation between Harry and Jesus, and it's highly probably that he'll sacrifice himself at the end to bring about salvation.
I don't know if I'll cry. Probably not. I'll put down the book slowly, sad and blown away. I'll be sad, too, that it will be the last chapter in the life of Harry Potter.

It all depends on the situation. Knowing me, if he acts some sort of hero, saving the good side, destroying Voldie, and in turn, losing his life, I will probably cry out of emotions. If he is killed by someone from the dark side, I will probably do something out of anger.
To the guys: dont be afraid to admit you would cry!!

I'm with you Jen, I would cry uncontrollably.
Honestly, I would actually be a bit dissapointed. Not that I wouldn't understand that Rowling did it out of sacrifice or some other reason. But it would kinda suck after the years and years that you have invested into these books, and their characters, just to have a pessimistic payoff like that.
I just like happy endings I guess.

December 8th, 2002, 9:52 pm
I've never actually cried at a book, I do get a lump in my throat occasionally...but I may well make an exception if Harry dies, or indeed any character we've got to know and care about through the series. Even though we didn't know Cedric all that well, his death felt like running into a brick wall, because it was so pointless.

I'd BAWL MY EYES OUT!! If anyone deserves to DIE, here are some other chars who could use a slow, painful death:
1) Voldemort (I'd probably clap if this one suffers slowly and painfully!)
2) Lucius & Draco Malfoy
3) Snape
4) Dudley Dursley and Dursleys Senior
HARRY DOESN'T DESERVE TO DIE!!! :'(

I think it's unlikely that Harry will die. If he does, it won't be until #7, because otherwise the title can't be "Harry Potter and the...". It is possible that Harry could be a sacrifice, as the books get darker that is not so far-fetched. But I still think that he is so much the central character that JKR can't/won't kill him. It would really be a weird ending to the series. I just can't see it working, from a writing standpoint.
Hagrid442
December 8th, 2002, 11:00 pm
I don't know. I don't think it's too far-fetched for him to die. Jesus is the central character in the New Testament, and he dies. It wouldn't be until the very, very end of course that Harry dies.
Don't mistake this for me thinking that there's no way Harry will survive. Both are equally possible.
LOL Celestine. I don't think the Dursleys and Snape deserve death. Snape's shown that he has some moral fiber underneath his jerkiness and bitterness. And the Dursleys aren't so deplorable that they should die.
The Malfoys, yeah. At least Lucius. Draco's done nothing that really deserves death. But Voldemort and Lucius have killed innocents.

LOL Sherlock. Well, alot of people have put their time and money and most importantly their hearts into reading these books. It's only understandable that they might feel some grief at the passing of someone they've gotten to know so well. :)

Well personaly I'd never ever look at the books in the same way again. I wouldn't cry, but I would be on the brink of doing so. I'd only cry if J.K. Rowling writes it in a very emotional way like in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I just can't help cry a tiny bit when Gandalf *dies* and Boromir dies.
IMO if Harry dies, it will be because he's either sacrificing himself to stop Voldemort, or Voldemort wins in the end. It would most likely the first option but I'd prefer the second option. About time we had a story without a happy ending and the bad guy winning in the end

lol! Too true!
I wouldn't hate the series if Harry died. I agree with lanifiel that if Harry does end up dying it will most likely be somehow uplifting. I mean, in all probability he would die heroically, and I do think that the series will end with the downfall of Voldemort. If the end is sad, I trust that it will be fulfilling. I think that JK will leave us all satisfied, and that, whatever happens to Harry & Co., she will not needlessly kill characters and inflict unnecessary pain on her legions of fans. ;-)

Me? I'd probly say "Oh, that's weird." Finish the book, Watch TV, Play Some Computer Games, Get A dink and some food, completally forget about Harry, then see the book later on and say "Oh yeah, that stupid series where the main charector dies". And still go on with my life as normal. However, the chances of that are slim. There's a greater chance that I'd Laugh my head off at him for being such an idiot and getting himself killed, and THEN say "Oh, that's weird." Finish the book, Watch TV, Play Some Computer Games, Get A dink and some food, completally forget about Harry, then see the book later on and say "Oh yeah, that stupid series where the main charector dies". And still go on with my life as normal. :D

I Know personally I would be so very very diapointed if Harry dies. I Think that even though the book has mass appeal and is completely suitable for all ages, it was originally based for children, and to kill off the main character after everyone had grown to love him, would likely destroy the series for many children, and they would not really understand what had happened, and why. The concept is to abstract for some children. (At least where I live.) I think it would be a mistake if JKR was to do that.

serioulsy i wouldnt be surprised because:
1) JK has been known to do the unpredictable
2) Its a sure way to stop any other authors to continue HP after shes done
3) If Harry an voldemort both dies, good and evil would balance each other out, so in a way, the story of good vs. evil still continues.
4) if harry dies, this will be a sure way of saying "thats it, its over..."

Harry won't die. J.K.Rowling has already confirmed this with a line in the first book. I'm paraphrasing, but it basically reads: "Harry remembered this for years to come." Something to that effect. Unless she takes the same route C.S.Lewis took when he destroyed Narnia, it isn't going to happen.
I'd be really angry if Harry died at the end of the last book. It would invalidate the whole series for me. To quote Blackadder: it would be like a broken pencil: pointless.

I would probably be pretty upset about him dying. I'm accually not sure if he will be the one, but I think that either him, Hermione or Ron will deffinitely die at the end. As most people said on this thread, they will probably die a hero's death. Reading about how it will upset his friends will be because of his death will probably make me sad. I wasn't too upset about Cedric until Harry thought about it or talked about it. I won't believe they are dead, until it is talked about afterwards

I've made a theory about Harry beind very very neqar death in OotP that I've posted in another tread. Here is it :
in a lot of interviews, JKR toys with us about being so shure that Harry won't die ; the UK covers were designed after JKR instruction, and NO Harry on them ; instead, a phoenix : the very bird that dies and is reborn then ; could the phoenix stands in for Harry? ; Harry will have to look very closely at death ;
BUt I also think this could be forseeing Harry's death in book 7 (I don't think he could play an important part as a ghost, though JKR told us we'd learn about people becoming gohsts sometime?)
Anyway, I cried at the end of book 4, just is the same way that you cry at a movie, or music, etc, because it closely relates with your mood, own emotions and feelings? When I cried for book 4 (I was reading it for the second times), I made a connection between Voldemort, the deatheaters, and the snipper that was killing loads of people, and the rise of terrorism. I was deeply sorowed for our own world through HP's, and I whished we had a lot of Dumbledore to help us down here.
Anyway, when Harry will die (I like to believe he will), I'll be in very deep sorrow, because emotionaly, i will have a high impact, not like if he was a friend.

I think Harry should die, after he has taken care of Lord Voldemort of course, because Rowling needs some restitution. I don't want people trying to make "what if" fan fics or real novels trying to carry on her series.

I COMPLETELY agree. You can't create this wonderful amazing world with characters exactly like you, and then just kill him. And don't younger kids read these books too? Like 8 year olds? I'm 16, so I'd understand somewhat about why and how Harry died, but younger kids won't!! She can't do that!!!

Then I'd cry a lot.
Then I'd re-read all 7 books looking for foreshadowing to his death.
Then I'd write JKR and either commend her for doing something so drastic and daring, or complain a lot.

For me it would the only that matters is how it happens, if JK writes it in a way that makes Harry heroic in death then I wouldn't have a problem with it but if he dies like a punk I think I'd be a little upset.

I cry at the end of the Little Prince and it's still one of my favourite books.
I'd understand if Harry dies, after finishing Voldemort. JR won't do it, though - too angsty for children...
Deep in my heart, I don't want any of them to die. Not even Voldemort.

I cried when Cedric died - in fact, every time I reread it I get teary-eyed - so no doubt I would cry if Harry died. As I would if it were any of the characters I love. I might feel slightly lost for a while, as well - but I'm sure I'd get over it.

I would probably lose my balance and fall of the chair or the bed. Then I would start screaming - Noooooooooooooooooo!!! You know, like people do in the movies wnen something bad happens and then they raise their heads to the skies and start to yell... Only that I will yell at the cealing... And then the neighbours will pronounce me insane... But,I would still cry for Harry... (The same is for Ron or Hermione)

I believe firmly that Harry will die at the end of Book 7, I have believed this for ages, and I will go on believing it until Book 7 comes out (hopefully not too many years away, or I may go mad).
That doesn't mean I won't be sad. I'll be expecting it, but I have faith in JK's writing ability, she'll write it in a way that will make me bawl. :'(

Accually, I'm starting to agree. Proffessor Trelawney keeps predicting his death, and she does it over and over. She accually made a few good predictions in the past. Maybe we should look into this.
If Harry dies, he will probably die a noble death. I'm convinced.
PotterIdentity
April 8th, 2003, 8:29 am
See, with the exception of Professor Trelawney's last prediction in Book 3, I don't really take her predictions too seriously (and I believe that Dumbledore or McGonagall said something to that effect as well about her predictions never being accurate, except for the last one about Voldemort coming back). I think I would take her more seriously if it seemed as if the other teachers took her more seriously (especially Dumbledore), you know? Who knows, this may change in future books?
At any rate, I personally do not think Harry will die at the end of book 7, but my reason is not because I think JKR would be going for the "good over evil" triumph. I, however, do believe that someone in the trio will be killed, and I have a feeling it will be Ron. Harry has never really lived a day without the thought of Voldemort trying to kill him or at least someone really hating him, including the Dursley's. I would hate to see him die primarily because of this. I think Voldemort will be overcome, and Harry will finally feel safe from his wrath, but I think he is going to end up having to deal with a great loss at the end that no matter how much of an opportunity for freedom exists, life will never really be normal. I would hate to see any of the trio be killed, but I have a strong feeling that Ron will be and though we get to see Harry live, it will still be hard for us [the readers] to cope with because I think the majority, if not all of us, love Ron (and Hermione) just as much as we love Harry. I only felt it would be Ron over Hermione because Ron has that special male bond with Harry that's really irreplacable. If Ron does die in book 7, I hope it's for heroic reasons and not Ron just being killed by a deatheater or Voldemort. I can see Ron giving his life for Harry, though. This takes me back to the end of PS/SS when Ron risks his life on the chess board so Harry can continue. Also, during book 4 when Ron was taken for the second task. I think in future books, we are going to see this bond strengthen even more, and then there will be a twist in the ending. At this point in time, I just don't see Harry dying, but I also don't see a completely happy ending either.
I know someone made a comparison to Harry and Jesus in an earlier post, but this is just one more reason why I don't think JKR would kill Harry -- it would be too much of a correlation? I sense that she will try and stay away from those common literary elements because if that were the case of Harry sacrificing himself, I think everyone would be making this comparison and I can't see that being a goal of hers (just like that Star Wars comment that she made about Voldemort being related to Harry). Also, I do not think JKR would kill Harry just so people wouldn't expect any more books. People just have to accept the fact that she will not be writing more than 7 books for this series, it's not a matter for her, it's a matter for us because we're the ones that keep wanting more. Just because there are 7 books, doesn't necessarily mean that the series has to end with the lead character dying to complete everything. I initially perceived the 7 books just encompassing Harry's 7 years at Hogwarts. Lastly, and perhaps I am reading into this incorrectly, but I think if an ending where the lead character dies was really intended, I don't think the author would even make a joke about it in an interview because it's such a major turn in the plot. I think JKR just wanted to get our blood boiling about the idea and make us think about the "what ifs," but I think if an ending this dramatic and serious was really going to happen, the author would lead us in thinking about other matters so it would be completely unexpected? At least that's what I would do, but that's just my opinion. Anything is possible at this point because so much about the plot has yet to be developed so please don't take my predictions personally or seriously.

I would be pretty upset, I would of course eventually get over it.

poke: Are you guys alright poke:
A book (or series) having a sad ending doesn't make it any worse (sometimes it make it better). I would be pretty dissapointed that anyone would "burn" their copies of Harry Potter because they are uncomfortale with the fact that sometime good people die young.
I don't think the fight for good should be achived easily, in war people die. I think that if the series ends with Harry and Co victorious and all members of the trio are still living and unhurt (emotionally or physically) the series will be quite unrealistic.
Example:
World War II was a just war, yet many soldiers who fought for good still died, and those that survived could never be the same ( they had lost best friends, their innocence )

I'm afraid I wouldn't be too unhappy. To be frank Harry is a very weak and characterless character. This is just my opinion but I don't care if he lives or dies, the whole "tragic background" thing is soooooo overdone, and he just dosn't catch my imagenation. Now if it was Ron or Hermione I'd be sad because they are far more developed characters!

I certainly would be very shocked if Harry died. Then, after re-re-re-reading it I would really understand what happended and start to cry :'(
I'm not so sure that Harry'll dies, but I'm very sure that someone of the trio'll die.
But I don't agree with some posts of you, like "JKR can't do that"... I heard her once in an interview, where she said that NO ONE will influence her in what she writes in her books, not the fans, not the parents, not even her family. If Harry's death is already fixed in her mind, she'll do it.
But what could this be worth for? I can't think of anything but Voldemorts' defeat. I would be even more angry and sad if Harry died for nothing....but I hope it's not necessary!
And remember: Harry Potter is The Boy Who Lived, and not The Boy Who Dies Finally Anyway ;)

i wouldn't be very upset if harry died. Like Crystal, i feel his character is not developed properly but if Ron died I would feel much more depressed.(This is partly to do with the fact that i like Ron more than harry, in the book and the movies)

I don't think that Harry will die as I sincerely believe that Harry will become an Auror - like Moody wanted.
I would be very disappointed in JKR if he did. It's too easy to make him die as a sacrifice so that Voldemort would be destroyed. Then again, it depends how dark JKR wants to make the books.

oh man, if Harry died...I seriously wouldn't know what to do. I'd most likely try to recreate the series if at all possible. If that didn't work, I'd do it anyways. But I'd probably starve myself for awhile. I tend to do that when somebody I love dies...like my dog died today...seriously, I've never known life without him...oops off topic. Well, I guess if I couldn't recreate the stories, I'd write to JK telling her to write after-the-books-sequels at least including Ron and Hermione.

If Harry died, I'm certain that I'd cry. I never really liked Cedric especially, but I really shed some tears when he was killed. Especially when I read the book again and Amos said something like "That'll be something to tell your grandchildren, Ced, you beat Harry Potter!"
If I read the series again it would make me feel sad to know that in the end, he would've died anyway. ...I'd probably be worse if Sirius died....I'm so attached to his character...:(

I would undoubtedly cry if Harry died.
I bawled during the Cedric bit in GoF, if that's any indication of how emotional I become when reading books. From a purely objective view, however (no shippiness at stake), I think it'd be awful if - after all the fear and sadness Harry has been through already - J.K. Rowling killed him. No, it wouldn't make the series needless, but...I personally think another member of the trio will make the ultimate sacrifice.
Don't know which it will be, but I'd be shocked/depressed just as well.

I don't know why so many of you feel Harry is an undeveloped character. Harry has plenty of personality, and he is the hero of the books. The books are all written from his point of view, and the book is named after him. What we know about the story is what harry's thoughts are. If Harry died in the end it would be the end of the Potter family tree. Harry at least has to have an heir before he dies. I would be shocked and upset if he died, I would run around screaming like a maniac.

If killing off Harry at the end of the series will make the book(s) better, then by all means, J.K. should go for it. Definitely. It shouldn't be one of those series where the main character never has to experience severe pain or death, and the only people who do are the main character's friends. That's like saying that heroes are invincible. I think the most heroic thing Harry could do would be to give his life to save someone else's. That goes for anyone.
Of course I would be crushed if he did die, but it would all be for the best. Would you rather have Harry die after saving (for example) Hermione, or would you rather see him standing on the sidelines watching Hermione being killed and not doing anything to stop it?

Definitely cry. I won't say who for those who didn't finish Book 5, but I (stupidly) skimmed through the book and when I saw the word "death" next to that character, my heart dropped to my stomache and my eyes teared up. well.... I think JK is ready to kill off anyone...
but I don't think it is likely that Hermione will die..
Ron.... there's a possibility...
I think Harry will get killed off the book...
by the book 7 comes out..
the books will be targeted for more mature readers anyway(mature than 6 or 7)...
those who are 6 or 7 would be in their pre-teen years by the time book 7 comes out(under the assumption that book 6 and 7 take 2 years each to come out).
even if Harry doesn't get killed off,
something equally dark and gloomy will happen in book 7..
if it is a happy ending book where Harry and all his friends survive to see their 130th birthday or something...
it becomes another disney story..

so how would you react to the fact that Harry is dead , if indeed that happens .
again the question is " what if " , not " what may " .... it's a question about your feelings about Harry's death rather than the possiblity of it happening .

I'd be really upset... I'd probably cry. I might forgive JKR... eventually. But I wouldn't do anything drastic like burn the books.... Then I would come on here and vent.

i'd be sad, but i wouldn't cry or anything. only one book ever made me cry - Where the Red Fern Grows. And in tribute to that i don't allow myself to cry at movies or books anymore - although it can be hard. i would probably just be like 'well that was intresting' and then turn on my tv and see if manchester united is playing or something.
cheers!

Eh, if it happens, it happens. I don't really care about Harry enough to care that much. I have never cried while reading a book, and I doubt that Harry's death will be tragic enough to finally accomplish an emotion that strong in me to cause tears.

I would be incredibly upset and definitely cry for days. Harry has always been my favorite character in the series and I would absolutely hate to see him die. I was very sad when Sirius died, so I can only imagine how I would feel if Harry did.

I will laugh. Cruel? Yes. What can I say, as a series goes on the hero tends to annoy me, with the exception of tamora pierce books, but buffy is a good example.. Why cant she die? Back on topic, Harrys getting annoying, so his death would be good.

I probably won't ever recover. I wonder if the ending is really emotional in the book (of course), they'll do the same for the movie because RotK really had me choked up. Wonder who'll direct the last movie because the ending has to be sad; someone has to die, and who knows how many  .
But if Harry dies, there'll be no more Harry Potter books. I really hope he doesn't. We still have to know about his life after Hogwarts. If he's studying to be an auror, then he still has 3 more years of training like McGonagall says.

I'd cry. A lot. And then sulk for a week or so. I sincerly hope that the 7th book comes during some holiday, so that I don't neglect school because of it. I think it's because I've followed the series for so long (five years?), watching Harry and the rest grow up and mature and get more problems. I'm so used to him now - I can't immagine a life where I don't know who Harry Potter is. If I had picked up all seven books at once, and read them all during a couple of days or so, it wouldn't have been the same thing.
But, now... I know Harry so well..

I'd probably sit there open-mouthed in shock for at least an hour. Then I'd put the books in a box and refuse to look at them for a month! LOL I couldn't imagine a life where Harry is dead either! *sobs*
But, now... I know Harry so well..
I know!!! So do I!!!! Argh!

As with what Thayet says, he's becoming a bit annoying because of his lack of ability to see things clearly. He's angsty and depressive and self centered, YET I still like him. Because he is trying to do what's right and what's good but I dont want him to do it for the sake of becoming so self righteous that he loses perspective. What good would that do and make him no better than Voldemort?
I hope he doesn't die and he does suffer though, because without suffering, how would he learn anything substantial? But I do want a happy ending for Harry.
I would feel sort of pained and highly annoyed that he had died, as with certain characters in the book if they died.

If Harry died I would definately cry but i think that he is going to die in the seventh book because there is no way he could live and JKR not write more books about him. Last I heard she said that she was just doing the seven books so i think that Harry is going to die and everyone is going to cry when it happens

I would pretty much feel the same way that I felt about Frodo leaving everyone. I would feel very sad and shocked but I would also know that he would get to see his parents and Sirius again. If he dies, he can at least die a hero.......although that would be so sad! :upset:

I will cry for some hours.
And feel depresses for at least one week.
And really angry with JKr.
I will really hate her for this.
I will put away the books and never read them again and never want to hear about them again.
And probably I will not go the movies either.
Yes, i know, I am too pasionate. But I really love Harry, fictional or not.

Raise a glass for the fictional Harry Potter.
Realistically, as it started as a children's sort of book, JKR knows that by killing Harry, she's sort of telling people that evil can triumph over good. Is that a good lesson for kids? Not really.
She won't kill him off, but if she does, I will be quite satisfied regardless.

I'll dance on Harry Potter's grave.
Seriously folks, hopefully people will end their obsession with Harry Potter (this isnt aimed at one person, I swear ;)) and the actors who play the characters. I think the biggest mistake was making the book a movie so soon after its writing. That shows more marketing and greed than skill, unless of course your a die hard capitalist then it is skill, lol.
Hopefully people will find their own nitch and not mainstram male bovine fecal matter. I love Norse/Germanic/Celtic mythology and history. I also took classes on Mythology, and the Harry Potter books make me sick, the whole story is ripped from others.

It depends on the circumstances of his death, really. Right now I'm not at terms with Harry unless I'm in a very bad mood, because he's so incredibly angsty throughout OotP it just makes me want to bap him upside the head and tell him to pull it together.
It would make for a good ending, I think. But it's kind of what everybody is expecting from JKR. I think she should pull out something totally surprising to cap off the series.

Maybe if he did die, JK could do it in a good way.
Have him reunited with his parents and Sirius.
That wouldn't be so bad. He stops Voldylocks and
dies coughing up blood but with a smile on his face,
cause he finally meets his parents. Bittersweet ending.
Or he could ascend! LIke to a higher plain of existence! And float around causing storms and stuff! Like in Stargate! :-D

I don't know. I don't think it's too far-fetched for him to die. Jesus is the central character in the New Testament, and he dies. It wouldn't be until the very, very end of course that Harry dies.
Don't mistake this for me thinking that there's no way Harry will survive. Both are equally possible.
Actually, you are partially right. There seems to be some kind of connection in which Dumbledore, Harry, and Fawkes represent the trinity.
What people are forgetting here is that :
A: Jesus was ressurected.
B: There is a VERY strong connection between Harry and the Phoenix.
C: Harry is constantly surrounded by symbols of life, old age, etc.
The way I see it, Harry will likely end up clinically dead, and be revived somehow. I dunno if wizards use CPR. Heh.
Also, JKR has been taking his possible death in a very teasing way. Think about it for a sec. Maybe he'll die, but nobody ever said WHEN. Everybody dies and we have eternity to be dead. Possibly there will be some sort of flash forward where the characters are all old and dying of old age. *shrug*

Be a bit upset, but I seriously doubt that he would die. A someone said, it would just show that bad can overcome good. I do not think this is the message she wants to give. But in light of the question, I definately would be crushed if that was his fate.
