Just so everyone knows, I was a good boy and searched  but I was torn to see that there was no hockey thread around! I swear on my Firebolt that there used to be one but I havent found it. If this is a duplicate Im really sorry :scared:

Anyways its hockey, roller or ice. A fast paced, hard hitting, game of stamina. What do you like about hockey? Do you play? Favorite team or player? Here we can discuss the strategies of the game and share what we know about the sport...

To kick it off, Im an Ice hockey player from az, playing as a sophmore for Mountain Pointe High School... I am an all round player who is mainly a stay at home defensemen but I also like to rack up some points as a forward :D I've been playing since I was about 7 years old.

*Another thing to think about-Here is a poll from FoxyKnoxy
Questions/Poll:
What do you guys think about the number of teams in the NHL?

Do you think there are too many for the league to sustain itself?

Do you think the league should expand again into new cities?

Do you think the smaller market teams should be made into 'farm teams'?

What teams do you think the league could give up to stay afloat?

I swear on my Firebolt that there used to be one but I havent found it. I thought I saw a NHL thread too, but I guess it got deleted during some pruning. Played some during gym class, and street hockey among friends but nothing on a team. Used to like the Red Wings and Rangers just haven’t really been into that many sports lately but maybe its time to start watching again. Did like that one goal tender "Goalzilla" I think was his name.

Haha, I got scared when I saw Classical_Wizar as a first post...you are like the ultimate searcher and I thought I made a duplicate  Anyways, Street hockey was how I got started...its an awesome game. Tons of fun! Anyways Im a huge redwings fan! I havent heard of that goalie...I assume its a nickname...Probably one of my favorite goalies is Dominik Hasek :tu:

Thanks, I just have too much time on my hands. Yeah it was a nickname I forgot what team he played or even what his real name was, might have been for the Rangers but the guy was just great. Think he was on one of the Winter Olympics team too. Yeah Street Hockey was just great, used to play with sneakers because I didn't know how to skate, turns were easier for me. Did have some injuries though, which I’m sure every Hockey player had faced before.

DougJohnston
August 30th, 2004, 1:00 am
Yes...Injuries...BAD! Lets see...I tore all the connective tissue/muscle in my left shoulder when I missed a check and couldnt do anything for about a month...slight concussion...nothing too bad. If you play safe in contact hockey you really dont get hurt on checks...just your ego gets hurt  Its like if you are within 8-12 inches of the boards and you get hit you bounce off them and it cushions the hit...you get supported, now if you are father away than that you get slammed hard and it hurts pretty bad. I play a really physical game and its a lot of fun.

EDIT: Well I have to go to hockey practice right now actually so I will talk to you later, See ya!

So what do all the NHL fans think of the pending CBA argument between the Players Association & the NHL? They had more meetings last week and the NHL released a rather biting statement'. It's not looking good...I'm afraid the season won't start on time, if at all. :(

NHL, Union conclude two days of talks;
Daly: League 'frustrated' by PA's stalling
August 26, 2004
------------------------------------------------------------------

OTTAWA - NHL Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Bill Daly today released the following statement upon the conclusion of a two-day negotiating session with the NHL Players' Association:

We are very frustrated and concerned over where we are in this process. The Union is engaged in a charade.

It is clear to us that Union leadership has no interest in negotiating or making a deal to save the start of the season. Union leadership is stalling, doing everything in its power to ensure this collective bargaining negotiation is not resolved in a timely manner. The Union's last and only proposal was made on June 4, 2003 -- now nearly 15 months ago. The Union's proposal was intended merely to preserve a status quo that promises escalating ticket prices, competitive imbalance, bankrupt franchises, hundreds of millions in team losses and 20 teams losing money -- all of which imperil the future of our game.

Union leadership then spent the better part of the next 12 months doing everything possible to avoid meeting with us. Once they completed the process of briefing the players during their annual "fall tour" of NHL cities, we began pushing for a more aggressive meeting schedule in February of this year in an effort to reach a new agreement so that our fans would have hockey, as scheduled, this October. Union leadership resisted these efforts at every turn, limiting negotiations to one meeting in April, one in May -- then delaying our next meeting until July in order to conduct two more player meetings.

On July 21, we presented the Union with six distinct and thoughtful proposals on ways in which we could re-design our economic system so that it would work for the League as a whole, our fans, our players and each of our franchises. Any of these new systems would continue to pay star players multi-million dollar salaries; would see the maintenance of an average player salary of $1.3 million (U.S.); and would pay the players more than 50% of league revenues. Union leadership spent only six hours going through the six proposals with us, then concluded that each was a "cap" and rejected all six out of hand. The fact that only one of the six proposals actually contemplated a salary cap exposes the Union for its true motivation -- to do everything necessary to precipitate a fight in an attempt to preserve the status quo.

Now that we are into late August, Union leadership recognizes that it no longer can get away with avoiding a more aggressive meeting schedule, so it has found a different way to stall, talking about individual team situations that have already been discussed in detail over the course of the last five years -- and matters, quite frankly, that should have been discussed months ago if the Union truly was interested in them. Union leadership is trying to get from today to September 15 without having to engage in meaningful negotiations with us. Union leadership does not want a resolution, it does not want a deal, it does not want a full season of hockey unless it is on their terms. Union leadership only wants the status quo -- a result that we have consistently communicated is unacceptable.

We hear in the media -- not from the Union -- that Union leadership's current meandering exercise of reviewing club situations is intended for the purpose of helping it to better understand our problems, and to help it formulate a new proposal to address our concerns. What are they waiting for? They know that the League as a whole has lost more than $500 million over the past two years and in excess of $1.7 billion over the term of this CBA. We've taken great pains over the past 5-1/2 years not only to demonstrate and evidence these problems to the Union, but also to explain these problems in great detail.

The way it appears, Union leadership now will make a last-minute proposal, possibly as late as September 14 or 15, and characterize it as its 'magnanimous last and best effort to save the season.' I am doubtful that the proposal will be a meaningful, bona fide effort to address our problems, which threaten to deprive our fans of a prompt start to the season. If the proposal consists of a repackaged 'status quo' system, it will not work -- and will not be acceptable -- and Union leadership knows it.

Yeah, I've been hearing that things arent going too good...im not too worried about it though, I watch a lot of hockey but playing it is much more fun...there will always be some type of hockey to watch wether is at the rink or watching clips on NHL.com so its not the end of the world to me..

Well it would be a huge mistake if the Union did cause a postponement of the regular season! Just think how much money the league, the owners, and the players would be losing if there were no regular season! I think this ploy of the Unions to get what they want is just another attempt to force teams to up players salaries whether they can afford it or not! :td:

From the CBC: The current collective bargaining agreement has seen average salaries rise from $733,000 US in 1994-95 to $1.83 million US in 2003-04. According to the union, every proposal included what amounted to a cap on player salaries – which it steadfastly refuses to accept.

Maybe a Salary Cap is needed as a lot of teams can't afford the big $10 million salaries of some superstars on their rosters and are always in the Red at the end of the season even if they fill the stands at every game (like Calgary for example). It is a shame really, as it makes the Unions seem like a bunch of greedy people always striving for the next big buck not taking into account, the millions of fans out there who just want to watch a game they love so much!

The little fan support the NHL has now will likely deminish for sure. They would probably think that if there is no Regular Season this year, that the league doesn't want our business and would happily take thier money to another sport that does (like basketball or football).

I am a huge Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks fan and it would be a great loss to me if I wouldn't be able to watch them play this season! :grumble:

DougJohnston
August 30th, 2004, 5:37 am
Yeah, I think a lot of the players are greedy but I dont follow the financial aspect of the game. Hockey is nowhere near as popular as basketball or football and I think the fans would be hurt greatly...

So what team is your favorite NHL team? Who is your most favorite player (past or present)? What coach do you like the best?

Besides Toronto and San Jose, I always cheer for any Canadian team in the playoffs and I can't stand the New York Rangers for some reason!

Best Coach would have to be Scotty Bowman or Marc Crawford.

Favorite players include Doug Gilmore, Wayne Gretzky, Mike Ricci, and Tie Domi.

I am a hugh Wings fan. Well I am from Hockeytown so that might be why :p
I am not too much of a wings fan right now. They are messing up the team at the moment.:grumble:
It hasn't been the same since Scotty left.:upset:

Ah well I got to celebrate three cups

I am not too happy that we are probably not going to have a season this year.
I do not salery caps but something needs to be done for the smaller teams.
I keep forgetting hockey isn't as popular in other cities as it is here in Michigan.
I was in LA and they were not even showing the games on television.
Even with the salary cap in place the players will still get their money. They will just get it through bonuses instead.

Hockey ROCKS! I've played it since I was six. Even though I'm a girl, I've always loved street and ice hockey. When I first started out as a neighborhood-scrimager (which I'll always be, basically) I used a snowshovel as a stick! I've never played on a team, but my older brother has. I pull for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Oh man! The shots! The saves! This is incredible! I think Esche needs tto say in net more though...he misplayed the puck and almost let in a goal. They dont need to run out of the net every time the puck is within 10 feet of them. The powerplays are realling goin to make this game exciting

NO! USA...I told you its all about the penalties!

Just a second though, for all the players out there, what type of helmet do you wear, facemask cage shield?

~oSiRiS~
September 1st, 2004, 12:44 am
OOOOooo that was a nice save!!!!

I have a CCM helmet I believe.
I used to have a ITech full face sheild when I was younger. I did not like it so I switched to a black cage.
Now I do not use any face shield or cage.

DougJohnston
September 1st, 2004, 12:46 am
Yeah, Im still in High School leagues and I have to wear a full cage. I like it though, it doesnt affect my vision and I dont fight so I like the extra protection. I've only gotten hit in the face once or twice with a puck because my reaction is so fast that I nearly always catch it or knock it away.

~oSiRiS~
September 1st, 2004, 12:52 am
I have taken about 5 pucks to the face. I put myself in front of the net like your Dino, or Holmstrom(sp?) so I should probably wear some sort of shield. I take alot of sticks to the face when people try to move me from the front of the net.

DougJohnston
September 1st, 2004, 1:00 am
Ah...thats no good... I like to block shots...when I go down I've got one hand high, one low...Do you wear a mouthguard?

~oSiRiS~
September 1st, 2004, 1:03 am
Oh yes. I pride myself on being a hockey player with all my teeth still in. A little crooked, but still have them all.

Wow.......
Darn penalties....

DougJohnston
September 1st, 2004, 1:07 am
Thats good! I cut up my mouth guards a ton so its tiny so I can talk to my teammates... I always pop it in and out to breathe easier... My teeth are all straight and nice so after all the money my dad spent on braces he forces me to wear...

~oSiRiS~
September 1st, 2004, 1:47 am
Yes we do!!!!

I have this old junior Nike fiberglass stick. Its pretty short.
I has alot of give to it. I have a similar shot like Bret Hull.
I put my weight into it and let the bend do the rest.

What kind of stick do you use?

DougJohnston
September 1st, 2004, 2:03 am
Well I have a redlite shaft with a focus flex blade (iginla). I Like it but its too short for me and I would really like to get a synergy with the money I make selling my old hockey skates. Its just that those sticks are so bloody expensive that I dont know if I will. My dad says whatever money I get from the skates can be used on hockey but all my other equipment works great. I hate it when players judge their performance purely on equipment... *grrrr*

~oSiRiS~
September 1st, 2004, 2:13 am
All my friends have synergy's. I liked it. But I prefered my Nike. The thing is pretty old. They do not make them anymore. It was like the first stick Nike started making.
I am surprised the shaft has lasted this long. I have broke many blades and butt inserts but the shaft is still in great condidtion.

DougJohnston
September 1st, 2004, 2:19 am
Thats good to hear. I wish everything was that high of quality...
I used to play with wood sticks, this is my first composite. I kept breaking the wood sticks right in the middle of the shaft...I broke tons of blades from slamming it on the boards and ice but now that my blade alone is 65$ I treat it like gold

~oSiRiS~
September 1st, 2004, 2:29 am
Yeah stick prices have gone up soo much since I first started to play.
Composites were unherd of and paying more that $15 was unbelievable.

What a weird game! I was totally expecting the USA to come out in better shape than that! I couldn't beliee the shots on goal Canada had in the first period alone but luckily the US has Esche who played brilliantly by only allowing in 2 goals! The US really needs to work on their defence and offence!

Canada needs to start shaping up too! Fighting is great to watch but when you are leading a game, you can't afford any stupid penalties like that! And I must say: "What is with Canada's vintage jerseys? They're yellow???" I did like the maple leaf on the front but the color just didn't suit them.

I finally found the info on the jerseys:

Canada opens wearing vintage jerseys

Canadian Press:
Yes, that was Team Canada on your TV set Tuesday night. Canada's players surprised the soldout Bell Centre crowd by hitting the ice wearing gold jerseys for Tuesday's World Cup of Hockey opener against the United States.

They wore them in tribute to the 1920 Winnipeg Falcons - Canada's first gold medal winning team in Olympic hockey history. The replica vintage jerseys, worn only for Tuesday's game, were described as `antique gold,' continuing Hockey Canada's effort to honour past Canadian teams. Last season Hockey Canada launched similar jerseys for Canada's national teams of the 1970s.

"We really thought we wanted to do something special for the Falcons," Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson said Tuesday. "The buzz in the dressing room is unbelievable."

The gold jerseys had `Canada' written on the back instead of the players' names, and had a red Maple Leaf on the front. The 1920 Winnipeg Falcons were a team of Icelandic immigrants that handily won the Manitoba and Western finals before advancing to the Allan Cup final in Toronto, where they faced the heavily favoured University of Toronto for Canada's senior hockey championship and a right to represent the country at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium.

At Antwerp, the Falcons defeated Czechoslovakia, the United States and eventually Sweden in the final game by a lopsided 12-1 final to earn gold. "This is what we should be doing, recognizing our past," said Nicholson. "We wouldn't be here today if they weren't successful in 1920." The replica jerseys, produced by Bauer Nike Hockey, will be available in stores across the country.

AHHHHHHHH MAN. Jovo's out for the tournament, and he was just starting to play better. Hope he doesn't miss any NHL time. Great first period by Canada, the rest of the game was average. Did anyone see Lemieux fight? What a player.

Do I note a hint of sarcasm or did you really like them? I thought if they were a bit brighter and not so mustard looking that it would have looked nicer but since it was in honor of the Winnipeg Falcons I understand.

Goodness! I just saw the last part of the second period and Canada is up 3-0! Whoa! Lemiux got robbed of a goal within the last minute of the game (2 on 1). Great save by the goalie. He did really good to not get caught too far over and stayed square to the puck

EDIT: Im 50 percent Slovakian...should that make me a fan?

Update: 4 to 0 Canada! All of their goals have been nothing short of spectacular! The backhander was my favorite!

Another Update! Slovakia is on the board with a great rebound goal

Didnt Handzus use to play for the Phoenix Coyotes?
Yes he did for two seasons 2000-2002. St. Louis traded Handzus to the Phoenix Coyotes in a deal for Keith Tkachuk in 2001. After a little more than a season with the Coyotes, the pivot was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers in a trade for Brian Boucher in 2002. All hockey fans have to watch that game.
Martin Brodeur is the best goaler (maybe after Patrick Roy) in the world!

Heh, I don't like NHL hockey, at all. I don't know why, so don't ask. I just find it incredibly boring.

I do, however, LOVE going to my Highschool's hockey games. Ahem, mainly because we kick serious behind, ahem. It's just so much fun to watch because my friends play on the team, and the grade 12's are SO funny at the games. It's just a blast. Plus, I get to miss class and scope out the hot players :p

In my area, there's a youth hockey league thing, and my friend is just begging me to try out with her. I would, except I'm playing soccer right now, which is the closest sport (that I know of) to hockey. People get beat up all the time. My friends have some awesome bruises! Oops, anyway, the hockey league is in-line hockey. I'd be more interested if it was ice-hockey, though.

Helloooo Doug! It's good to see you too <3 I truthfully hate NHL palyoffs, because the majority of my school are Toronto Maple Leafs fans and they are SO stubborn. My school is a "football in the summer" and "hockey in the winter" school. We have games during school for both sports. Our Athetic Council plans spirit days for both and you can buy tickets to get out of class for three periods, food, bandanas, pom-poms, tattoos, face paint, hair spray dye. It's a freaking sports school. I dunno, maybe the hockey-"ness" comes from being in Canada, but who knows.

Oh, speaking of Canada....Canada for the WCOH all the freaking way!

Actually I have to disagree with you there! I love hockey, don't get me wrong, but I love curling more! Curling is a game that is not only interesting to watch but is better if you play!

Interesting "Facts" About Curling:
It is cheaper to play than hockey and less equipment to use or wear.

Tournaments are fun and a great way to meet people.

curling is less violent but there is a lot of swearing and cursing! (trust me!)

If you slip and fall on the ice in curling you are mearly laughed at, slip in hockey and you will be blamed for a missed oportunity to score.

After winning the Stanley Cup, players drink beer out of the cup, in Curling players drink beer after every end! :rotfl:

In Canada, if your not watching Hockey then your probably watching Curling! (or if you don't grow up playing hockey then you probably curled!)

With two guys scrubbing the ice in front of a big rock with giant toothbrushes, who can resist!?!

Curling has teams of four which means: Four on Four Action!

So you weren't a good hockey player as a kid. You took up curling. Well, who's laughing now? Actually, it's still them!

Remember, Canadians are the best darn curlers in the world. Boy, that's something to be proud of.

You lost. Who cares? You're not here to win! You're here to get loaded! Doubles all around! Remember, the more you drink, the bigger the circle looks! :p

Note: Hockey is a great sport but curling is also a very strategic game that is very interesting to watch or play. If you have an opportunity: give Curling a chance!

He has to still have love for the game, if you are that good and you are almost in your fourty's you have to still love it. When the newspaper told him fans might be interested in the story, Hull said, "I don't give a ---- about the fans anymore."
Well doesn't that just spell it out for us? What an ingrate! There are thousands of young hockey fans out there just dying to have the chance to play in the NHL and he is whining about it? What a loser! To say such a thing about your fans is down right rude and selfish! Doesn't he realize that the fans pay for his salary? What a spoil sport! :td:

In my books, Hull has always been a traitor and a loser! He is playing for the USA? He was born in Canada for peet sakes!(Birthplace: Belleville, Ontario) :grumble:

Do you think there are too many for the league to sustain itself?

Do you think the league should expand again into new cities?

Do you think the smaller market teams should be made into 'farm teams'?

What teams do you think the league could give up to stay afloat?

I think that they should not make anymore teams.
I wish we(as in Detroit) could play some teams like Toronto more than once a season.
I think that the league is fine with the teams it has. Some teams that I would get rid of arent that good of a choice because of tradition but who needs three teams in that small of an area of NYC.

Questions/Poll:

I think it would be a lot more fun if there were less teams like back in the old days where you knew everything about everyone and there werent a million new names you have never heard of.
Do you think there are too many for the league to sustain itself?
Yep :td:

Do you think the league should expand again into new cities?
No...

Do you think the smaller market teams should be made into 'farm teams'?
Yeah, That would make play more exciting and there wouldnt be as many "blowouts"

Foxy would you like me to add you poll to the first post in the thread?
Sure go ahead! I would like to know what more people thought about the NHL situation and perhaps with more imput we can generate some really good methods of imrpovement for the league!

What do you guys think about the number of teams in the NHL?
Way too many! There are 30 teams now and that seems to have made the NHL too big to sustain itself. Many teams are losing money and sky rocketting player sallaries aren't helping maters much!

Do you think there are too many for the league to sustain itself?
Absolutely!

Do you think the league should expand again into new cities?
Heck NO! Unless it is an expasion team in Canada! :tu:

Do you think the smaller market teams should be made into 'farm teams'?
Yes and No! This has worked sort of in other situations like with the NFL and CFL (Canadian Footbal League) for example. Six years ago, the CFL made a deal with the NFL to sort of act like a 'farm team' division where the NFL kicked in some money to keep the CFL afloat. Then NFL could have access to CFL players who were entering their option years (the added year that allows the team to decide whether it wants to bring back the player) or whose contracts expired by the traditional date of Feb. 15.

In essence, the NFL could clean the CFL's carcass for talent well before the NFL season ended and bodies galore could be had via free agency and player cuts. But this has cost the CFL of some great tallent wasted down south (ex/ quarterback Ricky Ray -just cut from NY Jets, last year won the Grey Cup for Edmonton Eskimos) and now that the CFL's finacial situation is much better, I am sure this deal won't be lasting much longer.

What teams do you think the league could give up to stay afloat?
For me I would either get rid of entirely or move the Atlanta Thrashers, Florida Panthers, Carolina Huricanes, Columbus Bluejackets, Nashville Predators, and the LA Kings. :sigh: To move these teams, I mean move them back to where they belong: to CANADA!!! There is a reason why Hockey is our national pasttime, we adore hockey and will support it to the end! I mean come on these teams are in places that don't even know what snow is for peetsake! :grumble:

Less teams, would make the games more interesting with more of the better players on the same team.

I agree its hard to make money if some of the teams are losing it

No!

They should be expelled because they ovbiously arent interesting enoough in the area

Carolina, Flordia (they have tampa and florida) San Jose, Anaheim (California doesnt need 3 teams) Pittsburgh, Washington Capitals.

So about the violence in the NHL...It seems that players are getting a bad rap because of a couple things that have aired on the news whether it be a stick in the head or a cheap shot etc. They make it out to seem like nothing but a big brawl. How does everyone feel about fighting in hockey? I think that its just part of the game and makes it really exciting. I dont actually fight myself because we get suspended and get it trouble, plus, I don't let my temper get the best of me and don't let people get under my skin.

How does everyone view these things?

Yeah. Hockey makes headlines when something nasty happens. People often say football is tough while hockey is just all out violence. And that is flat wrong. The intimidators or the fighters on the teams that go out and look for fights are very important to have on a team. They are the sparkplug for the team. If the team is loseing by a goal or two the coach will send them out there to get a big hit or get in a fight, it pumps the team up!

Ah now that brings back some good ole memories! That occured back in 1996 (I remember this because that was the year I started to get into hockey and I was a big Av's fan at the time). Red Wing Kris Draper was standing against the boards, trying to get onto the bench at the end of his shift, when Lemieux charged him and barreled into him from behind, jamming his neck and face into the boards. The result? Draper had a face full of serious contusions, a broken nose, broken jaw, and was lucky to escape without a broken neck that could have crippled him.

After that happened, the whole game wnet down hill (as did the next one) with total bench-clearing brawls. Their rivalry has continued but not to that extreme anymore. I remember after that hit, both teams were fighting and then Patrick Roy and Mike Vernon went at it. I had never saw a battle like that before in hockey that included the goalies fighting in it too! :wow:

Well that is a shame as I think it takes away from the game and the players abilities. Some coaches think having a big goon squad is the way to go as to intimidate the opposing team with their size and physical strength. But they should realize that sending players out just to cause fights or instigate things, might backfire on them as their own player may get injured in the process.

I don't know the stats off hand, but I believe that the rates of players having concussions while playing hockey has drastically increased over the years and has greatly affected the NHL. It has seen some great tallent get injured and not be able to fully recover and never play again at times. For example: Eric Lindros, Pat LaFontaine, Michel Goulet, Paul Kariya, Geoff Courtnall, Brett Lindros, Steve Moore, and many others. I think things need to change in the NHL to stop this kind of stupid and preventative behavior or more good players will be leaving the NHL for good.
