View Full Version : A Place to Pray (all faiths)
HogwartsChaplain
December 10th, 2002, 3:09 am
One of our members has expressed an interest in a place at Hogwarts Chapel where God can be praised and thanked.
Many of us are members of different religions. While I don't want this thread to turn into a cause for debate, this particular thread will be for members of any faith who wish to pray together. Respect for other faith traditions will be required. It also will be somewhat of an experiment to see how interfaith prayer might work in cyberspace.
I encourage you to create threads where members of a particular religion can gather, if you wish.
===============================
Holy God, we gather here to pray together, knowing you are present with us. Our being present with each other within cyberspace is not that different than your being present with us wherever we might be. I thank you for the internet, for this forum, and for the diversity of faiths present. Bless our time together in prayer, as we bring to you our praise, thanks, and requests. Amen

What a lovely thread. :)
Are we allowed to make a list of things we want people to pray about?
HogwartsChaplain
December 11th, 2002, 1:14 am
Yes, I'd say that would be fine.
Since last night, I've had a change of heart about this thread. I think we need more places in the world where people of different faiths can pray together, if they wish. So I have edited the opening of this thread to make it an interfaith (all faiths) place for prayer. If anyone has concerns about this, please PM me.
I recognize that some of us worship the same God (such as Jews, Christians, and Muslims), while others of us do not (Wiccans, Buddhists, etc.). Can people who worship different gods, or even those who have vastly different understandings of the same one, worship and pray together?

I think they can and they should. After all Jews, Christians, and Muslims all have the same roots, in our founding father Abraham.
-edit- Not that Abraham is our God or that I'm crediting him as divine, just a common ground for three separte monotheistic religions.
Good thread, since I'm used to always hearing Catholic prayers and only those. :bigtu:

That is partly true DogStar87, but the religions do not pray to a founding father. Also I do not consider Christianity to have a founding father, aside from Christ Jesus. It would be wrong to give credit to someone other than God for one's faith.
This really is a good idea Evelyn, well done.

one problem. it might be an embarassing situation for those who don't know the traditions of other religions. but this is a great idea. i wish my catholic friends (i'm prodestant) would even pray with me. but we believe in slightly different things.

Actually, it isn't Abraham that ties Judaism, Christianity, and Islam together-- it is God. We worship the same God, though we have different understandings of that God.

Here is my understanding:
~ Jews, Christians (Catholic and Protestant), and Muslims worship the same God. Most interfaith prayer that I am aware of is shared by these three faiths.
~ Other religions worship different gods. There is question whether people of these other faiths can pray together, since they would not be praying to the same god.
~ Some people believe that we all worship the same God/god. For these people, I'd guess they would feel comfortable with interfaith prayer with anyone of any religion.
I guess this is turning into a discussion thread, and I'm fine with that. Maybe I'll have to come up with a new name (again)....

I'm not trying to put him in God's place. :scared:
It mystifies me how much fighting is going on between Jews, Christians, and Muslims, when indeed it is God that ties these three religions together.

I have a very serious issue I'm hoping you guys could pray about. :(
A friend of mine just recently went on vacation to visit a friend of hers before he was shipped overseas. Well, while she was up there, she fell in love with him. The problem is this: She's married and has a 5 month old daughter. I'm begging all of you Christians reading this to pray that she stays with her husband. She'll be making the biggest mistake if she leaves him. :( Thanks for taking the time to read this! God bless!

Okay, as Ronman stated, this was originally a place to pray, so here's mine...
"Dear Lord, I come before you realizing that I am but a worthless being, not worthy of your attention. However, Lord, you have cared for me, even enough to send your son to die on the cross so that I could spend eternity with you. I thank you for this and for the many blessings you have poured out on me. Lord, help me ever to be thankful for these things.
I think now of all the people who are less fortunate in the world. I pray for those who face hardships and temptations; give them strength to do whats right. I pray now especially for Apple's friend as she faces this temptation; guide her to do whats right. I pray for those who are sick, for those who are infirm and who suffer from serious deseases. Finally, I pray for the church. Bless her where she is poor, strengthen her where she is weak, and where she has gone astray, Lord, I pray that you would bring her back to the truth.
Lord, you have said in your Word that if we pray in accordance with your will, you will give us what we ask for. I pray that these prayers would be in accordance with your Word, but if they are not, then I would pray that your will be accomplished. Keep me from temptation and forgive me of my sins, in Jesus' name, Amen."

I want to especially thank You for the people taking their time to pray for each other in here. As I partake in Christ's communion each week, I silently sing or chant a prayer to my Holy Father. I would like to share it:
==================================
Oh my Father,
In heaven,
thank you for all of you strength,
your power and glory.
The broken body there,
beaten, broke and battered.
Those cuts are born all for me,
I pray to remeber.
The blood that stained the cross,
the wounds that bled my help,
Let them now make me ammends,
cover my dark soul.
For all the wrong that I do
I now give to you.
You can and will wash it clean
and make my soul yours.
==================================
Now let me add something that is on my mind:
Oh Father, my Father,
do not forget me in this life.
I need your help, as I do,
please give me your hand.
Please watch over my family,
keep them close to you in this time of great coming sorrow.
Let them have happiness in this coming time of Joy
and keep them happy for some time.
Please watch over my friends,
I love them, as you know,
please Father help them in their struggles and keep them
in your mind and care.
===================================
You are all my friends, please let this be extended to you. ((Bows))

"Holy God, I come before you again, understanding that your ways are better than my ways, and your plan is better than my plan. However, Lord, you tell us to pray, and give us the hope that if our prayers are in accordance with your will, you will answer them.
Lord, I pray for those who face difficult decisions and temptations. I pray for HarryPottersfan's friend, guide him and help him to make good choices. I pray for those who are sick, infirm, elderly, and who have deseases, Lord. If it is your will, I pray that you would heal them. I pray especially for those who do not know you, Lord. Open their eyes and help them to see the truth. And for those who do have the truth, for your church, Lord, I would pray that you would guide her into all understanding. Where she has gone astray, I would pray that you would bring her back, and where she is tempted, give her strength.
Lord, I ask all these things, praying that they would be your will. However, Lord, if they are not, then I understand that your will is better than mine, and that you will carry it out in your time. I ask all this through the mediation of Jesus Christ, who died on the cross so that we could pray to you, and in His name, Amen."
I always intend to make my prayers short, but they never seem to come out that way... oh well. I realize I may have made remarks in this prayer that certain people may have found offending, but I would just like you to know that they are not intended to be so. If you have been offended by anything I said, please forgive me, and if you would like, you could send me a PM. Thanks.

Dear God,
Hello again! :) I just wanted to jump in and tell You thanks for giving us this chance to pray together. It's truly an honor to be united together under Your name! If we've done anything offensive to You, I pray that You forgive and allow us another chance to make things right.
Some of us in here have needs we haven't posted about for some reason or another, so I ask that You take all of these unspoken prayers and allow the power of Your Holy Spirit to work through them in a powerful way. Also, I'd like to pray specifically for HarryPottersfan's friend. Use Your perfect plan to mold his thoughts and actions according to Your will, and allow the Holy Spirit to help lead him from his harmful paths. Show him how to avoide temptation, and give him a heart that hungers for Your purity.
God, thank You again for allowing us to come together in prayer for each other. I pray all of these things in the name of Jesus.
Amen.
By the way, remember my friend I asked you to pray for? Well, I thought you might like an update with her. She ended up going with the boy she "fell in love with". Please keep her in your prayers. These are really difficult times right now. Thanks! :)

"Dear Lord, I want to thank you for all you have done in my life and in the lives of others. Thank you for being a God who cares about us and has promised to hear our prayers, and thank you for sending Jesus to earth so that through his sacrafice we can be pure in your eyes.
I pray for all here on Chamber of Secrets. I know all of us here have needs that we probably haven't said, but you here our silent prayers Lord, and you know our hearts. I ask that these circumstances would work out out, and I thank you for being omniscient, for having a perfect plan. I think especially of HarryPotterFan's friend--guide him to do what is right, and Apple's friend--help her to make good choices and guide her back to the right path.
Lord, I pray that this would be in accordance with your will, but if it is not, then I pray that your will be done, on earth, even as it is in heaven. Thank you for our mediator Jesus who enabled us to come to you holy and righteous, and in who's name I pray, Amen."

My beloved father, I thank you for this opportunity we have to pray together and for the wonderful people you have gathered on this forum. I pray especially for the ones who are searching for the truth, father. I ask that you would reveal yourself to them and open their eyes to the work you have already done in their lives.
Please work in apple's friend's life. Work on her heart that she might be repentant and come to you for forgiveness. I know that all things are possible through you, and I ask that you heal her marriage and correct the harm she has done to her family. Also, I ask that you use this as an opportunity for her to grow in you, that she might see your marvelous works in her life.
Also, please be with HarryPottersfan's friend. Keep him from temptation, and help him to understand role you have set aside for sex in his life and the sanctity of marriage.
Thank you for your faithfulness to me. Forgive me for neglecting you, Lord, I am truly sorry. I revel in your boundless love. Help me to be a child of light. Help me to be aware of the Holy Spirit living in me, and guide my thoughts and actions. Keep me from my special temptations and the things I struggle with the most. Transform me so that people might see Christ living in me.
Thank you for all the wonderful Christians you have put in my life. Help Lindsay to remain faithful to you. Thank you for her.

Thank you for the love and compassion you have given me toward members of this forum, and give me wisdom to know how you want me to express the love you have given me.

Prayer: Dec. 23
Dear Lord, if it were not for you, we would be sheep, gone astray. But, because you sent your son into the world, we now have an opportunity to know you in a personal way. Thank you for sending Jesus into the world to die in fulfilment of Old Testament prophesies and as the true attonement for our sins. I thank you for the promise that one day you will come again in glory, and judge both the living and the dead. I know you have a perfect plan Lord, but if it be your will, I pray that those you have put in my life who's eyes are closed to you and who's hearts are those of stone would come into the marvelous light of your Word and have their hearts and eyes opened. Thank you again for the promise that you will come again, taking those who know you to heaven with you, to live forever more. Amen, come Lord Jesus!
Prayer: Dec. 24
Holy God, omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscienct, late in time, yet in the fullness of time and in accordance with your perfect will, you sent your son Jesus, the long-expected Christ, into the world. I thank you for this and I praise you for this. I thank you not only for Christ's incarnation, but also for his perfect life, and his promise that he will someday return to bring all who believe back with him to heaven. Lord, you have told us that we--the church--are your people, and you are our God; you will wipe every tear from our eyes. I pray that you would do this, Lord. Be with those who are lonely this holiday season; help them to sense your presence. Help us all to be thankful for what you have given us and content with what we recieve. I pray this in and through the name of our risen Lord, Jesus the Christ, who came to earth, lived a perfect life, and was obedient to death, even death on a cross, who who has promised to return one day, with glory, and take His church home. Amen, come, Lord Jesus!
Prayer: Dec. 25
Almighty God, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to reconcile the world to yourself: We praise and bless you for those whom you have sent in the power of the Spirit to preach the Gospel to all nations. We thank you that in all parts of the earth a community of love has been gathered together by their prayers and labors, and that in every place your servents call upon your Name; for the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours for ever. Amen.
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who settest the solitary in families: We commend to they continual care the homes in which thy people dwell. Put far from them, we beseech thee, every root of bitterness, the desire of vainglory, and the pride of life. Fill them with faith, virtue, knowlege, temperence, patients, godliness. Knit together in constant affection those who, in holy wedlock, have been made one flesh. Turn the hearts of the parents to the children, and the hearts of the children to the parents; and so enkindle fervent charity among us all, that we may evermore be kindly affectioned one to another; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

If I could, I'd like to ask everybody to pray for my friend Will. God is doing some major work in his life, and someday very soon he's going to realize that he can't stay on the fence about God forever.
Also, please please pray that I'll know how to be a good friend to him. Since I'm the one he talks to about God, I'm really feeling the weight of this responsibility. Please, please pray for us.

Dear God,
Please help me use better judgment when I'm in difficult situations. Please help me to be less impulsive and think about the consequences of my actions. Also, for Anne's friend and for the all of the members of CoS especially during this time of year which can be very difficult.
Amen.

Dear Lord, the situations in this world are governed by you and you have control over all things. Yet, still, you tell us to come to you in prayer, casting our cares on you. I would, therefore, pray for Anne's friend. You know the circumstances, even as you know his heart. Work in him, through your Spirit, to make the right choices. Grant Anne wisdom in knowing how to deal with this, so that she might help guide him into your truth. Your will be done, Lord, in this, and every other, circumstance. I pray this through the name of our risen Lord, Jesus Christ, Amen.

I wanted to ask for some prayer. Articulating and sharing these things is very hard. I can't write many details. Nothing would help more than knowing others are praying. Calling home to my usual prayer support network at the church where I grew up is difficult for obvious reasons.:
I am from Rhode Island. Most of my family and friends are still there. They need prayers as do all those I don't know who this touches. (If you don't know what happened in Rhode Island, the link in my signature is a touching but non-graphic story about the events.)
Thanks for those who were miraculously spared. Prayers for the things they struggle with because they were spared.
I take the bar exam (licensing exam for attorneys) in other states for three days beginning tomorrow. Focusing seems impossible most of the time. I don't know how I will take the most important exam of my life when even eating and sleeping are struggles.
One of these events is a huge load for anyone. Both at once are beyond my own capabilities.
==============================================
Lord,
I lift all these things and the things on my heart up to You. I thank you for the miracles. I ask You for healing and comfort for us all. I ask that You be with me and everyone back home and others who are hurting. I ask for focus over the next few days. I ask You to be with me and help me to remember both what I have learned and that while everything seems like more than I can handle, You are with me. Please grant me peace, wisdom, and comfort. Let those at home feel Your presence. Please comfort and heal them. Thank you that through you all things are possible.

Dear Great Spirit (I believe God is neither male nor female, that God is a Spirit. God is great and is a Spirit, therefore, a Great Spirit).
Please make all those who question my beliefs understand why I believe the way I do. Thank you for allowing me to believe these beliefs and know that you'll always love me. Great Spirit, watch over my family and bless my stepmom and dad's birthdays as they come up. May they come closer to you. In Jesus Christ's holy and precious name, AMEN.

You're everything I could want,
That I could need. If I could see
You want me, could I believe?
'Cause You're perfectly all I want, all I need.
If I could just feel Your touch, could I be free?
Why do You shine so?
Can a blind man see?
Why do You call?
Do You beckon me?
Can the deaf hear the voice of love?
Would you have me come?
Can the cripple run?
Are You the one
To raise me up from this grave.
Touch my toungue and then I'll sing
Heal my limbs then I'll joyfully run to You.
You're everything I could want,
That I could need. I can just
Feel you touch, and I can breathe.
Look how you shine so.
The blind can see
How you call, and how you beckon me.
The deaf hear the voice of love.
You bid me come, and the cripple runs.
You're the one.
Cause Your're everything
And I'm alive and I'll sing
And I'm alive and I'm free

I pray for all students right now. It is a very stressful time, with midterms, essays and finals beginning in two weeks. Help them not to get too stressed out, and to be able to see when they need to sit back and take a breath before continuing. Help students to realize that it willl be over soon, and that they can get through it.

We thank you, Lord God, for the safe arrival into this world of David Gordon Rowling Murray on March 23, and for the health of his mother, JK Rowling.
Birth is usually safe in our world, but death from childbirth still sometimes happens, regardless of our advanced medical technology. We thank you for this safe delivery, even if our thanks are for the selfish end of wanting to read the rest of the Harry Potter series!
Continue to David and his mother with the health, rest, nourishment, and care that they need. Bless Jessica and Neil as well-- bless their whole family! Amen

Lord,
I pray that the upcoming lecture by Pavel Reid will actually happen, depsite the Campion College Students' Association pulling their funding. Help Mark and all the others who are involved in bringing him here stay calm and do what they have to do in the face of all the difficulties. I pray that the difficulties and disagreements between the CCSA and Catholic Christian Outreach be resolved as quickly and as smoothly as possible, with as few hurt feeling on each side as possible.
Amen.
(Campion College and CCO were jointly bringing an amazing speaker, Pavel Reid to give a lecture on Thursday. Originally, the CCSA was going to provide half the funds needed and the rest would be from donations given by people attending and CCO, but as of Friday, for reasons unknown to me, Campion decided they were no longer going to pay. This is only the latest problem in a struggle that's been going on for awhile. It's very frustrating.)
(If everyone out there could pray too, it would be much appreciated! Thank you and God Bless!)

Dear Lord, you are the force that enables all life in this universe to survive. You have numbered our days, and you know what will happen to us each of those days. All things that happen happen because you allow them, and all that happens to us has been ordained by you.
However, Lord, we cannot help but wonder, at times, at the things you put in our lives, and we would ask, Lord, for protection, for guidence, for healing. If it be your will, Lord, I would ask that you look over Pansy's baby. Cure her, and if it be your will, help her to grow up to be a strong and healthy individual. Watch over her and her mother; give them strength by your Spirit, and help them both--Pansy, as she seeks to do what is best for her child, and her child, as she goes through treatement. I ask this in the name of Christ Jesus, and pray that you would work effectually in this situation if it be your will. Amen.

Bide within the Law you must, in perfect Love and perfect Trust.
Live you must and let to live, fairly take and fairly give.
For tread the Circle thrice about to keep unwelcome spirits out.
To bind the spell well every time, let the spell be said in rhyme.
Light of eye and soft of touch, speak you little, listen much.
Honor the Old Ones in deed and name,
let love and light be our guides again.
Deosil go by the waxing moon, chanting out the joyful tune.
Widdershins go when the moon doth wane,
and the werewolf howls by the dread wolfsbane.
When the Lady's moon is new, kiss the hand to Her times two.
When the moon rides at Her peak then your heart's desire seek.
Heed the North winds mighty gale, lock the door and trim the sail.
When the Wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast.
When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss you on the mouth.
When the wind whispers from the West, all hearts will find peace and rest.
Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them fast and burn them slow.
Birch in the fire goes to represent what the Lady knows.
Oak in the forest towers with might, in the fire it brings the God's
insight. Rowan is a tree of power causing life and magick to flower.
Willows at the waterside stand ready to help us to the Summerland.
Hawthorn is burned to purify and to draw faerie to your eye.
Hazel-the tree of wisdom and learning adds its strength to the bright fire burning.
White are the flowers of Apple tree that brings us fruits of fertility.
Grapes grow upon the vine giving us both joy and wine.
Fir does mark the evergreen to represent immortality seen.
Elder is the Lady's tree burn it not or cursed you'll be.
Four times the Major Sabbats mark in the light and in the dark.
As the old year starts to wane the new begins, it's now Samhain.
When the time for Imbolc shows watch for flowers through the snows.
When the wheel begins to turn soon the Beltane fires will burn.
As the wheel turns to Lamas night power is brought to magick rite.
Four times the Minor Sabbats fall use the Sun to mark them all.
When the wheel has turned to Yule light the log the Horned One rules.
In the spring, when night equals day time for Ostara to come our way.
When the Sun has reached it's height time for Oak and Holly to fight.
The Wiccan Rede(NOT REALLY A PRAYER)
Harvesting comes to one and all when the Autumn Equinox does fall.
Heed the flower, bush, and tree by the Lady blessed you'll be.
Where the rippling waters go cast a stone, the truth you'll know.
When you have and hold a need, harken not to others greed.
With a fool no season spend or be counted as his friend.
Merry Meet and Merry Part bright the cheeks and warm the heart.
Mind the Three-fold Laws you should three times bad and three times good.
When misfortune is enow wear the star upon your brow.
Be true in love this you must do unless your love is false to you.
These Eight words the Rede fulfill:
"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Prayer for Those Who are Ill
Almighty Lord, Physician of souls and bodies, who humble and lift up, who reprimand and again heal, visit (name(s)) with your mercy for (he, she, they) is suffering. Stretch forth your arm which is so full of healing and health, and cure (him, her, them), raising (him, her, them) from (his, her, their) bed and pain. Reprove the spirit of weakness which is in (him, her, them) and drive far from (him, her, them) pain, wounds, chills, fever, and weakness. If (he, she, they) have sins or transgressions loosen, remit, and forgive them in your love for mankind. O Lord, have compassion on your creation, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom you are blessed, together with the all holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Dear Lord please forgive me that I'm today nothing more but selfish. I need your strength, your love at this moment the most. I know, I feel you at my side you keep me warm though I'm cold. Hold me up though I'm about to fall, keep me up though I wish to fall to my knees.
I know I'm stronger as this but I'm tired to fight two battles one against myself and another one against my family. You have no idea how much loved I felt in the hospital cause I was sure of your love. Now back home I start to feel once again as the lonely rider. Please keep me strong, give me your love which I feel everyday.
But don't forget the one who cares and who I care for. Give them strength.
Amen

Holy One, send your Spirit of Wisdom today to all seekers. Some of us don't even know what it is we seek. Whether we need direction or support, freedom, forgiveness, the sure knowledge of our own value in your eyes, or a path through confusing times, we ask your presence. Open our eyes. Open our hearts. Surprise us with the clearness of your call, and give us courage to follow where you lead.
We pray especially for students facing graduation and for everyone looking for work, for those facing retirement, and for those facing war, illness, or other crisis. May your presence give them strength. May your dream give them hope. And may your love so fill them, and all of us, that our lives may be reflections of that love to your whole world. Amen.

This is going to seem very silly but I just stumbled upon this thread and it made me weep. Weep with happiness, let me clarify, but weep nonetheless. Instantly my heart fluttered and I felt almost an "at home" feeling. So much hate in the world. So much persecution, I have felt. And I'm glad to know there's a place to come and not have to be baptist, not have to be methodist, not have to be catholic. Not have to be Christian or Buddhist or whatever. Just to come and be faithful. And to share with other believers.
I'd like to request prayer for several people.
First for myself. Several months ago I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It's located on my pituitary right now but you never know. So far the worst that's happening is that I get dizzy spells. As I am disabled, it makes my already labored walking more labored (most of the time I use a wheelchair anyway but often I use Metal forearm crutches if the journey is a short one.)
Anyway, I would sure be touched if it is asked by many.
Second, for my mother-in-law. She went to the doctor and they found tumors in her uterus and one in her breast. The prognosis isn't dire but it isnt' great right now.
Third, and I guess this is a bit selfish but it's honest so hopefully that counts for something. Pray again for me, but this time for my faith to increase, as it seems to be laboring these days.
And rest assured that I might not be typing out prayers for anyone on this board but I will be reading each post and praying for all the requests made here.
My best to each of you!

Holy One, bring healing even in the midst of these diagnoses. Give wisdom and skill to their medical staff, that your powerful love might be made known even in weakness.
Third.... Pray again for me, but this time for my faith to increase, as it seems to be laboring these days.
Strengthen your servant, Edward, and help his faith to flourish. Bring peace, even in the paradox of the chaos of our world and our lives. Be present at all times, and give comfort to all who grieve the changes that life brings.
