Well, M'name's Amnar, and I am working under Artemis(In turn under the "employment" of MN) on the future MUD. I build the actual world that players navigate, explore, fight, conquest, whatever, on. I am pleased with the comments in response to Artemis' announcement, and I was wondering if anyone had any questions, don't want anyone getting a bad impression, or wrong one of this. First off, I think I'll answer any questions I can percieve would be general ones...

1. Can I be Harry Potter, Hermoine, Ron, Hagrid, etc.?
- No. In efforts to restrain any fighting over certain personas, we have wrapped up most of the current story. You will not be any book charecters, however will be able to be just about any position they could fulfill(Potentially headmaster, teacher, owner/proprieter, dark lord, etc.)

2. Will it cost any money?
-No.

3. How does it work? System requirements?
-It is run through Telnet, a way of connecting and sending data and text across modems. You can use the basic telnet client which is already on your computer(unless you have a very archaic one), but we recommend you download one of the free MUD clients (most under 3 mb) to see color, and use other features like macros(pressing one of the F buttons(f1, f2, etc.) to do a certain thing, like a shortcut).

4. How does one walk around, interact, fight, cast spells, etc.?
-All areas are like a grid, imagine graph paper. You are in one grid, one room, one area of a field, and to move to another place you type in the cardinal direction in which it is, i.e. to move north one room, you would simply type north and then hit enter and you would move one "grid" north. The full list of directions are n, e, s, w, ne, se, sw, nw, up, and down. In all lighted areas(areas that are lit up, or areas where you are holding a light, be it a torch, candle, or a wand after casting Lumos) you will see a mini-map.

Items, or objects as they might be called are interacted with commands that are common sense based. You have an inventory, things you have in your posession at the time, and you can interact with those items. For example, if you have a Tornadoes(woot) robe in your inventory, you can type wear robe and it will put the robe on you. You can type remove robe to take it off. Other commands are drop, give, wield, put(on/in) and get, which I'm sure you can guess what they do.

Typing look and then the name of an object will give you a description of that object(or person as the case may be) and what they are wearing/holding.

Casting spells is also quite simple, using the cast command(unless coders will change it, which I doubt). You must have the necessary skill, and you will cast the spell and the target(if any) and may succeed or fail, depending on your prowess with that spell. "Muggle" fighting will probably be automated, with punch and kick commands.

Note: There is a text file attatched, which is an in game demo of how it works. Anything and everything is subject to change, mind you. I picked Diagon Alley because A) It's my favorite place and B) It's the place I'm working on right now :eyebrows:

5. Will I go to Hogwarts?
-Yes, you will go to Hogwarts and be trained as a witch or wizard. You will be sorted into a house, take lessons, and do all that which a student would. Upon graduation from Hogwarts, you will take a place in the world as whatever you like, be it you work for the ministry, hogwarts, own a shop, craft items, or what have you.

6. Can I be evil?
- Yes you can. With Voldemort knocked off,(he and Harry killed each other in our world) there is a bit of a power vaccuum, so create your own dark empire to conquer the world if you wish, but watch out, those goody-goody Aurors can be rather pesky. :p

So, if any other questions you can think of, please, please ask.

Awaiting your replies,
~Amnar~

I can't wait!

Too bad it's text-commanded. It would be cool if it was a little like Habbo Hotel, but more interactive.

Shouldn't this be in The Daily Prophet?

No questions? If any, please ask. There are no dumb questions.

And as to the Habbo Hotel thing,
If we did it like Habbo Hotel, it would take a lot longer, because each other spell would have to be drawn through animation and reaction to others, and you just can't express things as well as you can with pure text.

Should it be in the Daily Prophet? I'm not really familiar with these forums.

Yeah...I guess so.

Well, why do you have to control the characters with text?

I'm kind of excited to see the MUD that is created. I've been playing another MUD for about 6 years now, so it'd be nice to see a change of scenery.

Romand:
1. When everything's done :D
2. Well, to build you don't need to know any programming language, you just need to be a good descriptive writer. To code you need to know C/++ as I understand.

Multi-User Dungeon, eh? Which type are you running?

Also, I'd just like to point out to others here that there already are several Harry Potter MU*'s, such as Allere Flammas, Hogwarts Express, and A Snitch in Time.

Sounds alot like a Harry Potter version of L.O.R.D. ^_^ though I think I'd like it better if it were more like L.O.R.D. II, but I still can't wait.

It is using the DoT(Dawn of Time) Codebase, I'm a builder so I dont' know much past that. We chose it because of some of it's already existing features(the less to code, the better)

There are other HP MUDS? Really...Didn't know that, but then again I haven't really looked into it. Of course ours will be better :D.

Thanks for the ad, Cloudnine, I really appreciate it when someone says something completely off topic and disrupts the flow....awesome. If you play our game I'll make sure to give you a faulty wand and some thin-bottomed cauldrons(just kidding).

By the by, was hammering out some shops in Diagon, and I'm running low on some shop ideas, especially for Knockturn Alley. They really only mention 4 shops, but I'm sure there would have been more. A few will be empty stalls for people to purchase and plant shops there, but if you have any ideas specifically for Knockturn Alley, or Diagon in general(besides the commonly known shops, Apothecary, Cauldrons, Eeylops, Quality Quidditch Supplies, all of which have already been done) I would love to hear them.

I've looked over the text-based games based off of Harry Potter. All were MUSHs, a much more restrictive form of MUD gaming. In MUSHs, you usually do alot by roleplaying, and there usually is no actual in game, or computer handled things, beyond navigation. You basically roleplay anything, which can be abused. With a MUD with skill levels, it is quite hard to abuse it, as everything has a system, a reason and method to it. Most of them seemed to have a very small pbase, and focused almost entirely on Hogwarts. Those that didn't focus on Hogwarts made the players revolve around administrators or select players acting as the key charecters from the books. This creates sort of a funnel through which everything must flow through, as everything must be done to/for/with/against these charecters. In our game, taking a bottle of white-out to them allows for players to fill the void and make themselves the main charecters, make them shape the world, or destroy it instead of trying to kill/save Harry Potter.

Just my two knuts, of course, ;)

Well I've been a long time viewer of the site and when I saw the MUD I became far to intrigued not to post a few questions.

1. When attending Hogwarts will you have a dorm room?

a. If so will you have to return there at night or when logging off?

b. If not then where will you restart in the world when you log back on?

2. If you have a place of your own, ie: dorm, office, shop, home, will you be able to decorate it with such things as posters of quidditch teams?

a. If so will they be described in the description of the room when someone enters?

3. How will the password system work for the different school houses common rooms and prefect bathrooms?

a. If you know the password for someone elses common room/prefect bathroom will you be able to enter? Will someone who doesn't attend Hogwarts and is visiting be able to enter if they know the password?

4. Will your Animagus form be chosen for you based off of personality (or a series of questions) or will you have certain animals you can choose from?

5. How will Apparating and Dissapparting work?

6. It was said somewhere that there would be a person controlled Minister of Magic, will the same be true for Headmaster of Hogwarts?

a. Will Dumbeldore be Headmaster, at least at the beginning of the MUD?

7. Will there be a room of requirement?

8. Will you have to pass the required Owls and Newts to get a certain job? Example: You need Potions, DADA, etc to become an Auror.

9. Will there be a new DADA every year?

10. How do you get a job being a descriptive writer for the MUD?

Ill try to answer those as best as I can but im not the maker or any part of the MUD :P

1. Can't Answer

A. No most MUDS don't require you to return but they move you back if you are logged of for say 5 mins.

B. See above

2. Depends if theres a object system. I hope there is. If there is you most likely have quota (A limited ammount)

A. Probley

3. Can't Answer

A. Im not sure but it woukd be good if we could. Add realism

4. Can't ANswer

5. Well on most muds you can just appear anywhere but on here I think they will limit it to people who have passed a test.

6. I suspose alot of people would be Minister but only one voted official

A. If someone plays Dumbledore

7. Can't Answer. I highly doubt it unless you type in what you need.

8. I hope so.

9. Dunno

10. You can see the 'Jobs' section of Mugglenet.com

Remember these arn't Official just what I know/think.

It's good of you to try to answer these questions, Black Swirl. I think Amnar will probably be back to answer them officially eventually.
