I don't really follow football, but by genetics I am a Jets fan. My family, well more specifically my dad is completely obsessed. He has season tickets and occasionally when his friend is unable to go with him and now that my brother is away at school, I go. It's kind of sad, but usually when I go, I end up zoning out and just staring at fire man Ed the entire game. The highlight of a football came for me is when we leave and they have vendors everywhere outside in the lot selling pretzels. Nothing beats a New York pretzel.l

We have a Coach
We have a Quarterback
We had a great draft
We have a relatively easy schedule
We have not won since the 1950's
Go Lions.

My Dad watches the NFL- it's on normally as I go to work and it's usually still on when I get home for lunch. I don't really understand the game- I don't know how it can go for so long and nothing really happen. Dad's tried to explain it, but I just don't get it.

I'm from Wisconsin so I'm a diehard Packer fan. We have a great chance to win the division this year and I think we're going to go far in the playoffs. Hopefully Favre's Super Bowl or bust statement rallies the troops and gets the team motivated. Oh yeah and the Eagles will NOT win the Super Bowl.

Go Packers! Brett Favre, Ahman Green, Driver, Walker, Henderson, just to name a few of the players that will be kicking other teams *****#$ this season on our way to the Super Bowl. Seriously though, Brett Favre is one of the greatest QB's to ever play the game (his dad died and the next game he threw for 399 yards and he didn't even play the entire game). the only thing i have left to say is:
CHEASEHEADS UNITE!

:grumble: Cheeseheads uniting in a thread that I started....we just can't have that. Seeing as I'm a Bears fan, I'm afraid I'll have to ask all the Cheeseheads to leave now....
JUST KIDDING!!!!! I don't think I can throw out all the Packers fans and feel ok with myself in the morning. Who would I pick on when the Bears win the Division???
But being in Western PA, I hear a lot more about the Steelers then I do the Bears.
Anyone hear how much Ben Rothlesberger got for signing with Pitts? I heard the signing bouns was $9 million, but I never heard how much the contract was for. Wonder if he's making Maddox a little uncomfortable in training camp??

I was raised a Raider but I also like the Cowboys, I think picking up Eddie George is going to help out alot.
The 'boys training camp is in the city I live in, and they are in town right now, I'm going up to the camp this week, they hold open practices everyday.

Diehard Steeler fan here! Rothlesberger's contract is for (I really hope I remember this correctly or I'm going to embarass myself!) 6 years, $40 million with a $9 million signing bonus. When the Steelers drafted him first round Maddox threw a hissy fit and the Steelers extended his contract and gave him more money, although I have heard he is not having a great camp.
Can't wait to see Ben play!! (Going to the pre-season home opener!) Hopefully he'll spark some life into the Steelers and redeem us from last season. Yeah football!!!

I know it's only the pre-season, but come on. Unless you're a huge Kansas City fan, it's not even a good game. Of course it's not over yet, but I don't see St. Louis winning this one.

I don't play - I'm a couch potato. But I love to watch it! :)
It's nearly the end of the 3rd quarter, the reporters are doing sideline interviews, and the KC guys don't look like they've even worked up a sweat. Bad time to be a Rams fan.

you're right, of course - that's what I get for channel surfing (this is not a great game.) I read "stl" as "steelers" instead of "St. Louis". What's really sad is, I knew it was the Rams. (Neither of these are my team - I like Denver)

NFL Sucks!!! CFL Rules!!!
I am a huge lifetime fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Greatest Team on the Face Of the Earth!!!
 Go Riders Go!
The CFL, with its more alluring scoring rules, three downs, motion-toward-the-line-of-scrimmage-before-the-snap-of-the-ball, wider field (63 yards versus 53 yards) and longer end zones (20 yards), provides pure adrenaline pumping excitement! Whereas in the NFL the rules tend to stymie innovative plays. :eyebrows:
The CFL's one-yard zone between the offensive and defensive lines seems silly to proponents of the NFL, who are used to seeing opposing linemen nose to nose. The Canadian twelve-man team is one more than the American eleven-man team. Canadians do not have a 'fair catch' rule on kick-off and punt returns as do the Americans; the receiver is fair game and an easy target for onrushing opposing players intent on sending the receiver into tomorrow. To offset the 'danger zone,' the CFL has a five-yard restraining zone that, theoretically, allows the receiver to catch the ball before being smacked hard by an opposing player. The five-yard restraining zone is more fiction than fact.
With Canadian rules, a football game is played quicker than the American game! The American quarterback has forty seconds to put the ball in play whereas his Canadian counterpart has half that time. :p
In the CFL, if a game is tied at end of regulation time, the teams play two five-minute overtime periods, each with a kick-off. Teams have an equal opportunity to score and win the game. South of the border, the NFL uses a different approach; there, teams play "sudden death" overtime, in which the first team to score wins. On many occaisions, one team - the receiving team on the kick-off - wins the game without the opposition having the opportunity to touch the ball. Some critics believe that this process is a bit unfair and sets up a foregone conclusion to the game's outcome.
Another difference between the two leagues is that CFL team rosters are much smaller than the NFL rosters. The NFL has about double as many players as do the CFL teams. That means the CFL players put in more time on the field doing more tasks; for instance, offense and special teams or defense and special teams. :tu:
In other words: NFL IS BORING! CFL IS EXCITING!

I'm probably one of the biggest Detroit sports nuts you'll ever meet. I'm all about the Pistons (2004 NBA Champs baby!!), but I definitely pay close attention to the Lions (I played football in high school, until a neck injury ruined that).
I'll tell you what, watch out for the Lions this year. If their young players, particularly Charles Rogers, Roy Williams, Kevin Jones, and, of course, Joey Harrington, can step up, they'll be a force this year. I'm gonna say they have a 9-7 season and maybe even make the playoffs (probably wishul thinking).
But anyways, as this is a football thread, and the best thing to do in the preseason is predict the Super Bowl winner, what does everyone think?
I'm thinkin' Pats/Eagles in the Super Bowl, with the Pats comin' out on top (my man Tom Brady will see to that).

Everybody will be stating their teams, and I just pipe up and say "Virginia Tech," and everyone turns to stare.
Virginia Tech is going to do well this year, but they're not going to win the conference. If anybody has a shot, It's UVA. Very strong team, loved the game against UNC. I got to tell all the people at school that my team beat theirs.

Sorry to hear that...I grew up with the Eagles (actually, football was not that big of a deal when I was a kid it was baseball, baseball, baseball), but learned to love the NFL when I was in college in Pittsburgh. So I love the Steelers, too. But I have to hold it in because my husband grew up in Cleveland, and there is about as much affection from Browns fans for the Steelers as there is love from Ohio State fans for Michigan.
And now I have friends in Baltimore, who are Ravens fans, and Browns fans are still mad at the Ravens because they used to be the Browns.
Hmm. Untangling the various threads speculating who the scrap on JKR's website described is beginning to look a little simpler now.
But if you hate the Eagles (pronounced Iggles by a lot of the locals), stick around for the Monday night game. I have a feeling the Vikings are going to have a field day, because the Eagles + Monday Night Football = CURSED!

Anyone going to watch the Bears at Green Bay on Sunday (the 18th)? I can't wait. :eyebrows: Especially since I know Green Bay is going to kick some butt (the chances are good - out of the past 20 games Green Bay has played against Chicago, Green Bay has won 18).

I'm excited about the Vikings this year- I think they're actually gonna make the playoffs for the first time in years!! And they killed the Cowboys last week!!! I live in Wisconsin, and I get a lot of **** from my friends at school because they're Packer fans. Especially when Green Bay one on Monday night. But we'll see whose better come Nov. 14....
I know exactly what you mean! It's hard being a Viking fan in Wisconsin. . . brutal, really. There's a lot of tension especially in my home town, because it's right on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border, where there are a lot of people who moved there from Minnesota to be out of the suburbs (like my family), and people from Wisconsin who commute to the Twin Cities for work. Probably 1/3 of the town goes for the Vikes, and the rest for the Packers. It's insane!
I agree that it's going to be a great year for the Vikes. The team dynamic seems to be great right now, and that's going to be a big boost for them.
Skol Vikings!

But if you hate the Eagles (pronounced Iggles by a lot of the locals), stick around for the Monday night game. I have a feeling the Vikings are going to have a field day, because the Eagles + Monday Night Football = CURSED!
Hey Iggles fan here if that's what you want to call it. I live about 20 minutes from philly and i just wanted to say that apparently that field day will have to wait another day. Can't really say too much about it, cause it's not like they crushed them, but hey a win is a win. If the Vikings could hold the ball it might have been a better game. Eagels rock 4-0.

Carolina Panthers all the way baby!
I haven't been keeping up with NFL so far this season I must admit. But I was very very proud of Carolina for making it to the Super Bowl last year even though they didn't win. They sure put up a good fight. I was turning my back on them for a while, but after last year I have regained faith in them.
Other than that I go for any team that beats Dallas, Denver, or Pittsburg. Don't ask why but I don't like either of those teams. So I route for anyone playing against them! :rotfl:
I like Miami too!

We have a baseball thread, so why not a football thread?
Who is your favorite team?
Do you think they'll make the playoffs?
I of course, being a New Englander, am a huge Patriots fan. This 20 game streak is amazing, and here's hoping they trounce the Jets on Sunday! Both are undefeated, so the winner will have sole possession of first place in the AFC East!

I am a forever Pittsburg Steeler fan. Even during bad times they are still my team .I have one back up team in Green Bay but they have had a rough season so far. I guess my question is this. Doe the Steelers stand a chance against Patriots and the Eagles back to back. There shcedule is terrible the second half of the season. They way they are playing is good but a 10 and 6 or a 9 and 7 reord would be exceptible. It could when there divison.
I hope the can beat atleast the eagles. No offense to any eagles fans out there.

Well now we will see if Big Ben is all the hype, Kudos for a great season. In the NFC I think either the Packers or the Eagles, though honestly can anyone see any real favorite. AFC, well the Steelers have home field and there are many good teams, Patriots have experience, Colts have fire power, just no D, big shock, San Diego can run, throw and have a defense, just alot of good teams, I pick the Patriots though, I'll take experience over Home field any day :tu:

I'm so sad that the Colts lost. Poor Peyton Manning! I wanted to go give him a hug. :)
But...as a die-hard Eagles fan, we're back to the NFC Championship again!!! And like all fans in Philadelphia, I can't help but think that maybe the fourth time's a charm! After all, the angels were definitely smiling down on us during Sunday's game. Look at the fumble recovery Freddie Mitchell had! I've never seen a play like that! I know us Philly fans should know better after three years and three chokes, but I just can't! This is the Eagles' year to go to the Super Bowl! I don't think they'll win the whole thing though. :(

I want the steelers to beat the Patriots just because I'm tired of the patriots being in the championship. I don't hate them. Just want to give somebody else some play...
I'm mad at the Eagles for getting rid of Bobby Taylor so I hope they lose. (Sorry eagles fans) I went to school with Bobby Taylor so I'm a big fan of him. I Know he's not the best NFL player in the world but he's great... And I was a major Seahawk fan this year (because of bobby and JERRY RICE!) When they lost, I cried!
Now i just want somebody to beat Philly. If not Atlanta then whoever wins the AFC.... I think the steelers have the best shot at beating them. I personally don't think Atlanta is up to beating Philly.

Well, Corbin, considering your prediction is coming from someone who ships Chocolate, I'm now so sure how reliable it is.
I think the Eagles will put up a great fight. Everyone's always underrated them, and never given them a chance, but they've shown this year just how good they can do. I can't guarantee a win, but I can guarantee you that Philly will work harder than we can ever imagine.

I was upset when the Patriots beat the steelers. I really thought that Pitt had the better chance of beating Philly than New England, but either way I'll be a New England fan come superbowl sunday. Philly is known to choke in the "big game" situation, much like Buffalo of the 90's And since they gave away Bobby Taylor, I just don't like them anymore. (that whole factor that I went to school with Bobby you know.... not that we were best buds or anything. I doubt he could pick me out of a lineup. but that's beside the point. He's a Longview, Texas boy.... don't mess with my homegrown folk!)
So down with Philly...I was going to say more but I'll digress.
I predict a high scoring game....
New England wins 45 to 31.

I think that the Pats will win. It is a shame that T.O. is making this a bigger spectacle than it already is with his hourly press conferences on whether or not he is playing. As I am seven weeks post-op from ankle surgery, he should be fine to play and who can blame him since you can never predict whether he will have the chance to play in a Super Bowl ever again. My doctor removed my cast after six weeks and gave me the green light to start exercising with a brace. I ruptured a tendon and detached a ligament.
I just hope for a good game and a short half time show.
teo
January 28th, 2005, 5:39 am
Until Brady loses a playoff game, I'm picking New England to win. If Owens plays, there's no way he's healthy enough to help them, and it's just a huge distraction either way. Meanwhile, the Pats are sitting back in Boston preparing for the game. Amen to the short half-time show...hopefully Ashlee Simpson is not available for this football championship game!

There is no doubt in my mind that the Eagles have what it takes to win it all. This is OUR year.. it's time to finally "reverse the curse". Philadelphia has waited long enough to get to where we are, and we aren't giving up without a fight. I know everyone is predicting the Pats will win, but this year is different. No one thought we could win the NFC championship without T.O., but we did it. The Patriots were Superbowl champs just last year, while the Eagles have waited long enough for their turn. There's no denying it, Philly wants this more than any other team out there, and that's what will lead us to victory. If T.O. is in any condition to play next week, the Patriots will have no chance against us. He has already said that he is healing alot faster than his doctors expected him to - God is healing him both physically and spiritually. But we've already shown that we can win without him, and I believe we can. The Eagles really have to prove themselves - it's now or never. I know my boys will pull through!

Probably not. Donald Driver said he thought he might, Favre's brother said he probably won't. It's still in the air but I reckon he'll probably play another year. If not the Pack'll probably get someone like Warner in free agency so they should be pretty set next year anyway.
Anyone, its Superbowl heart/head time - who do you want to win (thats the heart bit) and who do you think'll win?

Will they continue to be in contention without their coordinators? I know Charlie is off to 'college', and the defensive coordinator is likely to be offered a head coaching job (seems obvious to an outsider that Charlie would also have been a candidate for an HC job). I think Bill's staff has had a lot to do with the results, but must confess ignorance of Patriot team history (which includes what staff started when).

It's wonderful to live in Boston. You get to be right in the center of the victories, and I can walk to the Pats parade tomorrow. What I don't understand is the rioting. It wasn't too bad last night, but we've had two deaths this past year. "Yay, our team won! Let's flip some cars and burn stuff!" The helicopters circling overhead kept me awake all night. Just sad.
But good job Patriots!

In my opinion, the Eagles did great the whole game, besides in the 4th quarter which was basically Andy Reid's fault for calling bad plays and not using the time correctly. Unlike what most people in Philly are saying, I don't think it was a bad game at all, considering the Patriots were probably their biggest threat of all, and they only lost by 3 points. Sure it was a little disappointing to lose, but we are finally getting it all together and we'll be back next year. You can count on that.
And I have to add that T.O. did amazing, and I'd say that even if he wasn't injured. Great game boys! Gooo Eagless
