So I would have actually been surprised and impressed just by the paperclips.

Yeah....havin' a sucky life. A word of advice for any person even remotely thinking that having your in-laws living with you will be a nice, charitable thing to do....be selfish. Be very selfish and never---ever, no matter how nice they seem---never let your in-laws live with you. You will regret it every day of your life.
