Has anyone here seen or heard of the Dark Crystal? (It's a film) Me and my friend have a theory that quite a lot of people have seen it but don't realise they have (not quite sure if that makes sense but ). Anyway I just want to see if we're right.

Wheee, the Dark Crystal! Well done for starting up the thread, Nana, good idea, ;)

I love the Dark Crystal, I saw it when I was about seven and didn't know what on earth it was - on scene stayed with me all these years, the one where Aughra the witch is going -

Look like Gelfling, smell like Gelfling...maybe you ARE Gelfing!

I spent years trying to track down whatever film it came from, until one day in school Nana said to me - 'it's the Dark Crystal!'. A joint fandom was born, :D and since then I've re-watched it and discussed it at length with Nana, lol

EDIT: Nana pointed out I'd miss-spelled Aughra and left out the h. Whoopsie, all fixed now, :)

Hehe, we're slightly obsessed... I think we're driving our friends mad actually...

Still, we can't be that bad 'cause you and Cho got me a Dark Crystal book for Christmas! *dances* Wheee! Gelfling!

sure. i have seen it, it used to scare the hell out of me! i think it was the whole scary bird like creatures!
Skesis! Yeah they are scary; especially Chamberlain...

Incidently, the Scissor Sisters mention skesis in one of their songs - Return to Oz. Coincidence??? .... Probably. Who knows, they might be big fans...

no i haven't whats it about?
Hmmm... A quick summary would be:

Ages ago, the Crystal cracked.
The skesis (weird demented vulture like things) and Mystics (overlarge but friendly dinosaur things) appeared.
A prophecy appeared from somewhere saying that a Gelfling (an elfish type of being) would destroy the race of skesis
Skesis not happy so they kill all Gelflings except of course they miss two or there wouldn't be a story.
Jen (a boy) is looked after by the mystics. Kira (a girl) is looked after by the Pod people.
Then the Great Conjunction approaches. Jen gets told to heal the Dark Crystal.
Goes to Aughra to find crystal shard.
Finds Kira soon after.
Arrive at Crystal castle.
Nearly gets killled but of course doesn't.
Heals crystal, Mystics and Skesis become One great being once more
Everyone happy - THE END.

Ok... maybe not that short a summary...

I love this movie! I've only seen it once or twice, but I still love it!

I find the Chamberlain highly annoying, though. (I think it's that noise he always makes!)

I've been obssessed with the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth since I was a kid.
To this day I don't realize how much they've influenced my own work as a writer--until I see the movies again and go "Oh, man I must have subconttuously ripped this off!"

Anyways, yeah they are both so good. And as someone else pointed out Jim Henson's STORYTELLER series (I just go the DVD last week) is sooooooo good. I rememeber being so excited when I fdound out that John Hurt was going to be in the first Harry Potter movie, because I always loved him so much as the Storyteller. I also thought a lot about the Storyteller when I read the Lemony Snicket books because many of the episodes sorta hinted at the idea that the Storyteller was infact connected somehow to the stories he was telling---just like Lemony Snicket.

RE: DArk Crystal....I highly reccomend the art of the Dark Crystal book that came out by Brian Froud. It goes into the history of the world and has so many awesome drawings!

:D That's the book Rem and Cho got me for Christmas. It's excellent! And its signed... ;) I second that recommendation. :tu:

 Yeah, that noise always scared me... Especially when they're in the Gelfling graveyard and he sneaks up on them... :scared:

Ah this movie rocks . I first saw it in year 7 english class, where all we did was laugh at the mystics going making that calling noise, good times :D
Then just this year I found another Dark Crystal fan at work and we just randomly shout out "The Gelfling!"

Saw it (and Labrynth) love it, own it. There was also an Apple (lle) computer game about 18 years ago based on the movie, and my small (at the time) daughters solved the game because they'd seen the movie. Kira has wings. Of course. I'm a girl!!!

I loved this film. The puppetry was amazing.
How about this for a random film to love?
Legend with Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, and Tim Currey as Darkness.
Great movie with a cool sound track done by Tangerine Dream. :tu:

The Dark Crystal was one of my favorite movies as a kid! We're not the only ones. The studio has noticed that it and Labrynth have sold consistently well over the years. In fact, they've done so well, Jim Henson Productions has hired Neil "Sandman" Gaiman and Dave Mckean to make a movie in the style. They basically gave them Henson's old mansion, muppets included, and a budget and told them to have at it. Movie's called Mirrormask and comes out this year. Should be great!

One of my favourite movies along with Labrynth. I do have a lot of Jim Henson stuff on DVD. I shall look forward to Mirrormask.
Shame about Disney buying the Muppets, but I suppose it was for the best.

 You should know, you are a Gelfling. Hmm... Does that mean you have wings? PE would be so much easier if we could fly. :sigh:

Mirrormask, eh? I'll look out for it, thanks for the heads-up, Ferrik!

Nana: It would, it really would....I can't see netball or basketball being a problem if you can fly...

:D Yeah, the skeksis are really disturbing... :scared:

Just as a matter of interest, what's everyone's favourite scene in the film? I think mine would have to be when Jen's stuck outside Aughra's house and she comes out and does the: 'Look like Gelfling, smell like Gelfling...maybe you ARE Gelfing!' line. :D

Yep, seen it, loved it, own it on tape. It's kind of weird and freaky when you watch it at this age though. You start to understand it all and it gets creapy; kind of like the wizard of oz and willy wonka.

It's not out on DVD yet, at least not over here. As far as I know anyway, it's not like I'm the DVD sheffif, but hey!

It's out on DVD in England, I rented it out but I've haven't bought it yet. It's got some quite cool special features, like the deleted funeral scenes and it shows you how they made it - there are actually people inside all the puppets (apart from the gelfings). It's really interesting.
