View Full Version : Which Hogwarts textbook do you want published?

The title of the book "Hogwarts: A History" has been mentioned so much that I would love to be able to read it.
Am I alone in this or would others like to read it too?:??:  ;D

I haven't heard anything about this come out? Where did you get your source? If it is true that would be a very cool book. The pictures would have to be illustrated very well. That would be cool though. The mysteries of Hogwarts will be unvailed.

I don't even know if JKR intends to write the book. I was just musing on how fun the book could be to read if it was written.

March 16th, 2003, 11:30 pm
I think that is J.K's next book. I think she won't want to write it while she's still writing the books, but I think she will afterwards. It would give away too much if she wrote it while still writing the HP books.

March 16th, 2003, 11:38 pm
Yeah, it'd be a great read!
I agree with mol93hermione, though -- she'll probably have to wait till after the 7th book is out. Too many clues.

it would be cool if she wrote it after the series, and did a 'revised edition' to include all Harry's and the gang's adventures, such as finding the CoS and the tournament and stuff. It would be amazin, and im sure JK has enough background material to do it!!!!
Barbara Kennedy
March 16th, 2003, 11:41 pm
It is possible the book could be broken into several 'volumes' and be a series of books in the future too.

March 16th, 2003, 11:42 pm
My friend said she already made Hogwarts: A History, but I think shes wrong.
It would be so cool if she wrote that but, I also agree wiht mol93hermione, that wel'll have to wait until after book 7 is written. That is going to be so long! When/If JKR writes it Hermione won't be the only one who has read it, we will too!! ;D
Barbara Kennedy
March 16th, 2003, 11:45 pm
The volumes could have titles like "Hogwarts: the Beginning", "Hogwarts: Four Houses in Turmoil", "Hogwarts: The Dumbledore Years."

I'm going to move this into the Common Room. If you're unsure where to post a topic, please consult the brief descriptions located under each individual forum or ask a Prefect/moderator/admin.
If another admin/mod thinks this thread should remain in the Great Hall, please move it back. :)

My friend said she already made Hogwarts: A History, but I think shes wrong.
She probably hasn't physically written it into a book, but she (JK) has exceptionally detailed notes on everything HP. Loads of stuff that she'll never publish. So you're friend is probably right, in a way. ;)
JK might publish Hogwarts, A History after the 7th book is released. She would probably do it for charity like she did for Quidditch through the ages and Magical Beasts.

March 17th, 2003, 12:22 am
I think JK actually said somewhere that she would maybe write Hogwarts a History when she has finished all of the other books. It depends on whether she is tired of writing about about HP or not, also the procees would go to charity like the other two school books.

I was thinking about this. I would love to read it and sound like Hermione when my friend makes a mistake. I love stuff like that. Well if she does, we would be able to find the many Hogwarts secrets. The closest thing we have is Lexicon. They put it sort of like that.

Sorry, I thought this thread belonged in the Great Hall because it pertains to "a future book".
HPviolinist85
March 17th, 2003, 2:38 am
Accually, I'm convinced that in between book 5 and 6, she'll write more of those little books like "fantastic beasts and where to find them", and "quiddich through the ages". It goes to a charity called "comic relief" and she's all for doing charitable work because she understands how it is being poor.
I think her next book will be unfogging the future, a history of magic, standard book of spells (with a disclaimer saying that muggles can't do them" ) I agree with everyone that "Hogwarts, a history will be after the series or at least later on. "

I'd definitely devote some time to reading it, if she (or really, someone she assigned to do it) would write it. Given her notes, I'm sure that there is enough material to go nuts with it.
Maybe there should be an online collection of events and people to place in it. That'd be fun.

Yes I've wondered about it myself. If fact, I've looked for Hogwart's, A History along with the other schoolbooks. I hope she ends up writing it, and I hope it's long and detailed ;D

that would be so so sooo cool if she did write the book! they (well...hermione) do mention the book loads of times and now i'm really interested in reading it! and if she does write it i think it'll be after the seven books are finished and it'll probably be for charity!

I actually asked her in my letter I sent off to her about this book. I mentioned I know a lot of people including myself who would love to read it, and is she considering doing it after she finishes Harry Potter.
This was 2 weeks ago, so no reply yet!

I really hope she does write Hogwarts: A History. It would really flesh out the series. Many other established scifi/fantasy series have written companions or something of the sort, and they usually come out great.
It would also be nice if she wrote, or comissioned someone else to write, a formal lexicon. I know there's an excellent one online done up by fans, but an official one could add extra things not present in the books eg when certain laws were passed, MoM timelines, etc.

March 17th, 2003, 11:38 pm
It would be fantastic! I'd love to read it, as well as her notes. I really hope they get published in the future.
I hope she doesn't get tired of HP stuff and publish EVERY paper with facts about the books. I wouldn't get tired of reading her 150 pages about Dementors.

helhorns - The last time I wrote to JKR (after CoS was published), all I got in reply was a generic letter. None of my 2 pages worth of questions answered!! Too bad I didn't save a copy... :(
1MelissaPotter5 - I did NOT say she was writing it, I said I read it on some business site about how HP is making so much money and that I didn't believe them.
BUT...If JKR makes this book, I would be ecstatic (sp?). I would love to have an HP book to read after the HP series.

MEG- It wasn't you who I was talking about it was another of out friends..MrsFredWeasley226. (You spelled ecstatic right)
I really do hope that she writes it. Sales would proabbly just as good as the books. Anyone who has read them would go and buy it. But like it was sed before, it would be after book 7, which would take a while :'(.

It would be great if she wrote it. I have always wanted to read more about the origins and history of Hogwarts.

I hope it includes details of exactly how and why the four wizards decided to create Hogwarts [and why it was named that].

March 18th, 2003, 6:59 am
It is definitely the schoolbook that the most number of people want to read, as far as I can tell. I think she said in an interview that she was considering writing another book after book 7, that if she wrote it it would be for charity, and that it would be a sort of encyclopedia or such (which fits Hogwarts, a History perfectly).

I would just LOVE to read Hogwarts, A History. It sounds absolutely Fabulous in the books.
You guys have read Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages, right? Those books were marvelous too. If JK wrote Hogwarts A History, I would hope she would write more than what those books had. But I'd definitely settle for anything! :eyebrows:

It would be fantastic if she did write it. Yes, it would probably have to be broken up into volumes because Hermione said that it was thousands of pages long. Imagine the costs.

I also hope it is well illustrated. Lots of opportunity for fanpics?

It would be the best ecyclopedia that the world would see... It would just need to have all those informations about all those events JKR mentioned at least once... Heres of list of topic I think she should put in
why you cannot aparate in the hogwarts grounds
how the founders came up with the name "hogwarts"
some tricky word plays and prophecys (if she wrote it before the series was over, which she'd never do)
a list of famous quidditch players
past tri-wizard tasks
more information on tri-wizard tourtaments
That's a short list, list more if you want.

I think it would be great if she did write Hogwarts: A History after all seven come out, but I have a feeling that she will publish her notes on the series. I'd love to read what she orignally had in mind, and how Hogwarts, or even how the Weasleys have red hair evolved.

I would love to read Hogwarts: A History. I'm glad to see that all of us are as cool as Hermione, as she is the only person who seems interested in Hogwarts: A History.
But can you imagine how much work it would be to write a history book about made up events. I'm sure she probably had to write a semi-history in order to write the books, but I still think it would be a huge undertaking to write.

She could release it in several volumes covering different periods of the school's history. That way could wait for each one of those books too....... Hurry up June 21!

I'm quite disappointed at how to Harry, Ron and company react when Hermione talks about that book. They seem bored, not curious, like if that book wasn't interesting and that Hermione was boring. They're dumb or what? If I was there with them I'd run to the library to get the book!
Guardian Angel
April 5th, 2003, 1:04 pm
Harry and Ron aren't dumb at all, they just think that there are other ways for spending the free time than sitting in the libarary reading history of Hogwrats. And why would they - Hermione knows it from cover to cover.
It is not that I agree with them , I am just saying that they don't have to read it as long as Hermione's alive.
I know that if I were at Hogwarts I would certainly team Hermione and secarh the library for every interesting book...
Llopin
April 5th, 2003, 1:11 pm
I just think they're not curious; they have a whole library full of interesting books and they don't use it unless they need it for do their homework. Gee, if I was there, I'd prefer to read cool wizarding books that going to see Quidditch trainings or talking to others around the castle. I'm VERY curious...

No, I'm afraid i'm not Gemini, but I don't think this does care vey much..
And, yes, I can imagine all those great books, waiting to be read... Sigh, so many interesting reads that we could get, but we can't!! And I'm sure JK won't write all the library books (but I'd like more Quidditch trought the ages-type books, you know?).
Getting into the book and exploring the library would be awesome. But it's impossible. Alas...

It would be nice if Rowling wrote Hogwarts: A History. Though, I don't think she might. Maybe, after Harry Potter 7, she'll stop writing and take a long, deserved rest.
It would be very interesting indeed to read the history of Hogwarts, and get more information on the Chamber of Secrets and things of such. I'ld love to see an official book, written by Rowling called "Hogwarts: A History." It'll provide a lot of background information and it'll be great.

May 2nd, 2003, 7:27 pm
Llopin, Llopin, Llopin...Who says that she needs to write the big fat encyclopedia all by herself...?We could help her!(by we I mean every interested kid or adult in the world) She could make a list of everything that the book should contain and we could send her our essays about that stuff. She'd then make a choice, re-write something , organize all and give it to the publishers... And at the end of the book they'd print our names... Cool, eh?

May 2nd, 2003, 7:28 pm
Oh I hope she publishes it, I hope I hope I hope. I would read it from cover to cover, maybe skim over some of the extremely boring parts. Yet I hope she doesn't do it until after the 7th or last book (if she were to decide to go further), it would just prolong the next book, and as we all know, that is just not fun.
Llopin
May 2nd, 2003, 7:29 pm
I'm the first one to send her stuff and even write some parts, but I think it would be quite messy, wouldn't it? Lots of people would send their opinions and stories and she would go quite mad and all....

If she did, I imagine it as a dark maroon hardcover book with gold lettering in the front, as well as a full-colour Hogwarts badge. It would have to be thick, of course, with many different things that I think would make even JK's head spin to think up. And because of this & a few other reasons, I think it would be a while until she writes it, IF she even writes it. Think about it; all the demands from readers & the press is already putting pressure on poor JK, and she has two more books to go. Does she really have time & WILL to write 'Hogwarts: A History'? Our best bet is that we see it sometime after the series. That wouldn't be too bad, you know. We could discover things we never saw before & flip through our previous books, discovering things & hints we never saw before. Maps of places would be good, definitely. Stories, 'did-you-know' facts, Hogwarts heroes...a must. But all in all, I'm not betting too much that JK WILL write it, poor dear. :sigh:

May 3rd, 2003, 2:14 pm
I don't know if this was mentioned earlier... but I doubt that she will write it. Hogwarts: a History was quoted to having over a thousand pages (ouch!) and I don't think that JK would spend all that time on it. Well.... now that I think about it, it's possible for her to write a shorter version like FBaWtFT and QTtA... all I know is I want it :D.

definately Hogwarts: A History. I dont see why Harry doesnt actually read, wasnt he ibing as a muggle, and everything in the wizarding world fascinated him? And he was shy that he wouldnt know as much as others.
On second thought, id like to read "Who am I?' by Gilderoy Lockhart ;)

As I laid in bed last night trying to count sheep, a question came to me ,"What were the mauraders like before they became adults?" .This question was soon followed by several more like " Did Lupin and Sirius fancy someone at school ? And if so what became of it? Why was James the only one we know of to marry? I personally would love to see JKR write about life before Harry Potter. After she finishes the series, of course.
I thought that this would be a pretty good start for theories some of you might have reguarding the childhoods of these three, all in fun of course. JKR has given us very few clues as to their life at Hogwarts but she has given us enough for our imaginations to take over. Who knows, we might learn more about them in books 6 or 7 but until then I would love to hear your thoughts?

August 3rd, 2003, 7:16 pm
Good thread...
I'm guessing that none of the Marauders other than James got married, as we never see any of their wives, even in photos. Though I guess they probably had girlfriends etc, you know, teenage boys etc.
Unfortuanately, JKR has said that book 7 is the end, and after that she wants to write an adults book under a false name.

Death Omens: What to do When You Know the Worst is Coming (PoA)
Home Life and Social Habits of Brittish Muggles

Hogwarts, A History

If I ever had the chance to grab a copy of Hogwarts: A History, I would run for it. Well, maybe not run for it, but I would love to have it. It would be so interesting to read it before book 7 comes out but I guess that just won't be happening too soon. It would be nice to know more about the school and its secrets. I've always wondered why JKR constantly mentions it through Hermione's dialogue in most of the books. I think she might plan on publishing it after the series ends but maybe it won't happen. Possibilities are endless.

I thought Fantastic Beasts was awesome, so I thought maybe 1000 Magical Herbs and Fungi - it would be the same thing except with plants instead of animals. But then I thought about Hogwarts, A History, and I couldn't resist. A lot of the history would be really interesting but what I really want is a big part about Hogwarts itself, where Hermione found out about not being able to Apparate, etc.

I agree. Although it would be awesome to read Hogwarts, A History, I don't think JK would write it until after she finished the 7th book. I would also like to read the book that Hermione, Ron and Harry got the Polyjuice Potion from. I forget what it's called.

Hogwarts, A history, definately!
I mean, the boys shun it, so it must be interesting! ( I'm just kidding!)
Learning more about Hogwarts, oh that would be great! Of course, I doubt it could be published until the series is done, as there is probably some stuff in it that we will find out later, and shouldn't find out until then.

I agree that "Hogwarts, A History" would be fantastic! I always wanted to know more about the founders, as well as how the school changed through the centuries. And there are so many references to it in HP, that it'd be nice to actually read the whole thing.
Also, there was a book called "A History of Magic" that was mentioned; it might be even more interesting.
And then there are all the books about doing magic (like "The Standard Book of Spells"), which would be pretty neat. Still, I think a history book would be the best.
Does anyone want to read a Gilderoy Lockhart book?

Hogwarts: A History - definitely. It's such a "source" of knowledge and, really, JK over-exhausts this book as a default for information via Hermoine. At this point, I just want to know what else is in it.
I think I'd also dig reading the Divination book and the textbook Lupin uses for the third year of DADA.

well any of them would be absolutely great, but I think most interesting one would be if JKR wrote one for Harry's history class w/ Professor Binns. It would be a complete well almost complete history of Harry's magical world. Perhaps not pertaining to the immediate plot at hand but it would give us background to stuff like the first war, and maybe even stuff like the first witches and wizards. BTW- what class do the kids use the Standard book of spells in and how come we never see them using it at Hogwarts- they're just buying a new one every year....?
Elocin4684
June 7th, 2004, 5:58 am
I would imagine the Standard Book of Spells is mainly used in charms. I don't think they ever buy a charms book. Also, it might have some stuff in it about transfiguration. I don't remember a trans book, either. I think the Spells book wouldn't be that intersting because you can go to any wicca site on the internet and get spells akin to the ones they use in HP. Or you can just talk Latin words of what you want to do.
I would love to see Hogwarts, a History. They could talk about the original founders, the first students, the enchanted ceiling, what has changed over the years... classes taht were offered and that are now offered... oh. so mcuh stuff! Paintings and who they are, statues... oh, how fun!

I'm sure that we will see some form of her notes being released, but this will be after she goes back and edits all the HP books. I can't remember the correct term for it, but she says she is looking forward to going back through them. So, we will probably see Book 6, Book 7, then all Books 1-7 re-released, and then mayber her notes. And, hopefully, a little odd book here and there like Quidditch or Beasts.

That would be great! I wish she would write a small character bio for the major characters that we don't know as much as we'd like to about (Snape, Luna, Lupin, etc), telling about their pasts.
I too would love to read Hogwarts: A History. Think of how much we would learn about the castle (I'd bet if Fred and George had bothered to read it they would know a lot more secrets about the castle :p ).
I would also be interested in a book on Transfiguration or Charms, like a standard spellbook describing the spells and what they are used for.

June 30th, 2004, 2:22 am
Accually, I'm convinced that in between book 5 and 6, she'll write more of those little books like "fantastic beasts and where to find them", and "quiddich through the ages". It goes to a charity called "comic relief" and she's all for doing charitable work because she understands how it is being poor.
I think her next book will be unfogging the future, a history of magic, standard book of spells (with a disclaimer saying that muggles can't do them" ) I agree with everyone that "Hogwarts, a history will be after the series or at least later on. "
It would be cool to read history of magic or standard book of spells from grade 1-7. Unfogging the future sounds a bit quite hard. Don't ya think? With all those animals and moons and weird shapes. Does anyone here bought the Divination tea set? Ah well. Can't expect everyone to buy it. Not that I have one. *sigh*
Anyway,
I agree with you. "Hogwarts, a history" might as well be after the seventh book or at least later on.

After JKR confirmed the title for the 6th book "Harry Potter and the half Blood Prince", she also updated another section, can't remember which one, which sys that if she wrote another book for charity (Like she did with "Quidditch Through the Ages" and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them") she would likely publish all her background information, notes, and histories of characters and such into one book or a set of books. I REALLY REALLY hope she does, because before the reelease of "Sorcerer's Stone", her biography on A&E showed her telling us about the complete history of the Death Eaters! I also hope she would publish her drawings and stuff as well, then we would get to know what she envisioned everything to look like!
If she never did this, though, I would hope she would do "Hogwarts: A History". That would be a fascinating read! Alternately, she could publish a set of "The Standard Book of Spells Grades 1-7", or even an issue of the Daily Prophet! Now THAT would be cool and original!!! =D
