View Full Version : How popular is the actor Colin Firth outside of the U.S.?

I saw nothing close to this topic during my search. If I missed something or if it is a "dry" topic, please close it. Otherwise, here it goes. . .

My husband and I just saw the movie "What a Girl Wants" (cute flick), and were wondering how popular Colin Firth is outside of the U.S. Most girls I know over here first saw him in "Pride and Prejudice" as Mr. Darcy and absolutely love him. Since then, my husband and I have only seen him in those two movies as well as "The Importance of Being Earnest."

We think he is a great actor, and like I said, we were just wondering if he is a popular actor, new to the scene, or one that has been around for awhile. Lots of people here in the U.S. seem to like him. What about elsewhere?

Hmm... well I'm in the U.S. and wasn't familiar at all with him until a week or so ago when I saw him in P&P. And now I love him! He was so mmmmm as Mr. Darcy, if you know what I mean. :P

Sorry I can't exactly answer your question. But he is English right? So he might be popular in the UK.....

I recognise the name, but I can't picture a face. He doesn't seem to be that big a deal here in Aus.

My older sister knows who he is and she isn't exactly the authority on actors so I'd say he is pretty well known.

Bridget Jones Diary helped to up this I think.

As for me I've seen him in loads of stuff but I do watch a great deal of movies.

Considering Firth is English, I can assume that he is most popular in the UK.

For the record, he's relatively big in Australia -- I have an affinity with English humour, so perhaps I'm slightly bias but I do enjoy some of his films.

I have no interest, however, in seeing "What A Girl Wants." Not even the slightest urge...

I am with Rotsie on What a Girl Wants. Ugh. My friend has expressed an interest in seeing this and wants me to go with her. I am putting my foot down.

My favorite Firth film is Another Country. Rupert Everett was in this one too and it was in 1984 before they were famous. Firth plays a Marxist. Good stuff.

However good of an actor Firth usually is - watch Valmont and then watch Dangerous Liaisons (or the other way around). Malkovich owned that role and Firth was dismal.

What a Girl Wants............ I too have no interest in that one. After seeing the preview for that every time I saw the Chamber of Secrets in theaters (5 times...:D) I decided that I hated that movie.

I love Colin Firth in P&P. He is so good at being the silent, brooding, sexy type. I would say that he is pretty well known in the US, especially with Bridget Jones and now What A Girl Wants.

Colin Firth certainly has a big following in Australia. There is constant mention of him in magazines so that means there must be an audience for him here.

I had no interest in seeing What a Girl Wants either, but alas it is Spring Break (WOOHOO), and when one does not want to remain in the house all day, one is sometimes forced into seeing things her strange friends think will be cute.
It wasn't.
I had a nice laugh though. Several ugly stares, but still I had a good laugh.

"She can come to my harbor ANYtime." - a quote meant to be serious.
"I love you 1000 Swedish Fish." "I love you 1000 red M&Ms" - a quote also meant to be serious - a kinda inside thing I'm guessing that was never explained and never mentioned again.
And then she like gets all mad when her dad is dancing with the stepdaughter during the father-daughter dance (only because she wasn't there and he was forced into it). *SIGH*

DO NOT WASTE A PENNY ON THIS MOVIE.

Thank you.

Oh, Colin Firth - never heard of him before this (I live in the US).

I heard he's considered one of the sexiest men in England(and i totally agree ;)). I am a huge Colin Firth since Pride and Prejudice, and even huger when i saw The Importance of Being Earnest, and Bridget Jones' Diary.

Yep, I'm a big Colin Firth fan. I own many of his films (in fact, one of my old siggy/avatar themes used to be of him), and I think he's a very good actor. Pride and Prejudice was just amazing - he's the ideal Mr. Darcy. And of course, I also love Bridget Jones's Diary. I saw him in another film with Kenneth Branagh where they are in the Nazi leadership. The entire movie is about a conference that occurred during WWII about what Germany decided to do with the Jews. It was very interesting.

As for his popularity - I know he's fairly big here in the US. He was even named as one of People's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World." ;) I'm not from the UK, but I've heard a lot about his fame in the UK. From what I've heard, he's even more famous over there than he is in the US.

I also have no interest in seeing "What a Girl Wants." It looks too sugary. It might be worthwhile to rent, just for the pure pleasure of watching Firth, but otherwise it does not look like my type of movie.

I have to admit that I saw "What a Girl Wants" over the weekend.

We forgive you MadMagic! Did you like it at all? Maybe it is really better than it looks. :D

It was cute. I have an embarrassing weakness for the pre-teen comedies though.

MadMagic

Gee thanks. But I am strangly drawn to those types of movies. The whole "my dad that I have never met is a millionare/royal person" story line always gets me.

I take it MadMagic likes The Princess Diaries?

I agree with Fuchsia.
Dangerous Liaisons is superior to Valmont!!

I also enjoyed Firth in The Importance of being Earnest and Circle of Friends.

Charmed
April 8th, 2003, 6:42 am
Yes, I was just about to mention Circle of Friends. I loved him in that movie, I enjoyed his role in Bridget Jones's as well. I have yet to see Pride and Prejudice and the Importance of Being Earnest.

Wow you've never seen P&P Charmed?
Oh you must!!

I think I may have seen bits and pieces of it at some point but never the entire movie. Next time I'm at my local video store I'll get it.

He was in "Brigette Jones' Diary", right? I think. I am in the US, and I've barely heard of him!

Every female I know...regardless of age or marital status, who has seen Colin Firth in P&P, just thinks he's wonderful. I've also seen him in BJ Diary and the Importance of Being Earnest. I don't know squat about this movie everyone seems to hate.

I'm from the U.K. and I've only seen him in Pride & Prejudice. He seems a good actor, as he played Darcy perfectly. *nods*

I think he's a popular actor here in the U.K., but I wouldn't know, considering I'm terrible at any celebrity-related info.

I've only really noticed him in "Shakespear In Love".

MadMagic
April 8th, 2003, 10:36 pm
I actually normally don't realize that he is in "Shakespere in Love". It doesn't really look like him and we aren't supposed to want the heroine to end up with him, unlike his other movie like P&P.

And yes Weatherby, I am a fan of "The Princess Diaries"

I live in Spain and my friends wouldn't know him by the name unless you mention "Bridget Jones".
So I guess he's not very popular.
Was he in "Shakespeare in Love"? I don't remember him. Oh, well, I'll have to rewatch the film :D

And I must say he's great, at least in the few film I remember.
I'll have to check that P&P. I think I haven't seen it.

Don't feel bad MadMagic, I am too. I loved Colin Firth in The Importance of Being Ernest, and I hope that I get to see him in more movies. I'll probably go see What A Girl Wants but only becuase my mom wants to see it and in which case I'll be stareing at Firth.

I live in the US and most people I know have never heard of Colin Firth. If you mention Bridget Jones's Diary, then the little light bulb goes on for a second, but they usually just shrug him off. I have never seen Pride and Prejudice straight through. I've caught parts here and there, but I love what I've seen (the video store doesn't have it). Is The Importance of Being Ernest good? I've tried renting it, but it always seems to be out when I go to the video store. Hmmm, maybe there are more closet Colin Firth fans in town than I realize.

I can't speak for the average American movie goer because I am a movie fanatic and I know of more movies, actors and directors, etc than most people, but I absolutely love him. I think the first thing I saw him in was Circle of Friends, but it might have been something else. I think he's great in Bridget Jones's Diary. I saw What a Girl Wants last Friday and I thought it was very cute. Then yesterday he did a satalite interview with one of the local news stations and I watched it. He is very poised and articulate. Very good actor and pretty cute.

There was gossip tha said he would paly Sirius Black, but now that's just rubbish, we all know that Gary Oldman got the role. However, I wouldn't mind him being in another HP film, playing another role, but I don't know who could he play. But he would do a good job for sure.

I first discovered Firth in The English patient, were he had a tiny role, but after that I've seen other films with him, like Valmont or Shakespeare in Love. But I will always remember him as the Mark Darcy of Bridget Jones's Diary.

I dunno how popular he is here.. (Denmark) .. I've seen Bridget Jones's Diary, and I was stunned by his interesting choise of sweaters. Not really his looks or acting skills, but I'm sure he's a great actor.. Can't really judge after seeing only one film with him. I'd love to see Shakespeare in Love, and I think I knew he was in Pride and Prejudice, cos when I saw the pic of him that name just popped up in my head.

I think Bridget Jones' Diary certainly helped him be more known but before that I didn't even know about him. He's a good actor.

Speaking for me and some friends of mine, yes, he is very popular ;-) Especially as Mr Darcy in P&P and Bridget Jones´ Diary. He´s really cute!
I can´t speak for the rest of Germany for I´m quite crazy about watching british films - and he´s in some of my favourites. But I´d guess that he´s at least well known here because of Bridget Jones`
