the site doesn't have an archive with the birthdays and witch/wizard of the month... that would be nice.
we have those at MuggleNet, however it would be nice to have it directly from the source. :)

Has anyone else figured out what the secret behind the changing watch face is? It happens when Peeves blows across the desk. The dial flashes and changes into a new face with 12 hands [ like the one Dumbledore carries, interestingly enough ] one at a time.

whizbang121 March 4th, 2005 5:19 am

Dumbledore's watch always reminds me of a horoscope with the transiting planets in motion. Dumbledore is an astronomer, and might be able to keep time from knowing the positions of the planets.

Or maybe it's like Mrs Weasley's clock and each hand is someone Dumbledore is keeping track of, Hagrid and Harry, for example.

Maybe, that's a cool theory :tu:

That's what I thought too. Hmm, but aside from Hagrid and Harry, who else can we think of who would be on the clock?

EDIT: 300th post! :rotfl:

Hi guys, I haven't been around in a while, but just checking: last time I kept up with this thread (about 2 months ago) there were 7 easter eggs, have any new ones been found by chance?

2. If you look at the mug on Jo's desk it appears as though there is something in it
but covered by leftover coffee. That coin sound is there...

Maybe it's just an oversight, or a red herring.

I always assumed the "coin sound" was just the sound of the cup being put on the surface it is on. Maybe there is something in the cup though. On a closer examination of the cup, it looks like it's an empty cup that has green stains on the sides. Maybe it's tea leaves and so it's a 'tea cup' not a 'coffee cup'. The cup also looks like it's got a brown stain on the bottom (or maybe it's a reflection of something above the cup).

I don't know if this has been mentioned either but I just took a look at the Wizard of the Month. After a while, the picture of Mungo Bonham would shut his eyes tightly and emit some kind of yellow light or glow from his hands. What do you think that is about?

He's a healer, so the glow is probably just magic. And he shuts his eyes because he's concentrating.

You can see on the extras page its definately a mug (which can be use for tea or coffee), I'd say the brown marks are tea stains and the green sludge is tealeaves. The chinking china noise sounds like a teaspoon in a mug to me, but I don't think it has any significance other than being a generic mug sound effect for cosmetic purposes.

They look like they supposed to be healing hands to me. Which raises a question - Is it just artistic license from light maker, or did Jo ask them to make him do that? If its cannon (which isn't clear) it could suggest that healers can do some kind of wandless healing magic (I wonder if it would be innate or if they learn it?).

Oh I didn't think of that. Guess I was thinking but not making the connection. I always imagined Healers to use their wands to heal rather than their hands though. Maybe Mr. Mungo Bonham is exceptionally gifted in healing and managed to acquire these marvellous "light" healing skills... Hmm...

Not to offend anyone by bringing in a sensitive topic such as religion, but if the light emitted from the hands have healing power, it reminds of a bit of Jesus and him being the Light of the world, the Light that saves and heals the world... This could be something to think about. After all, Jo is a Christian too.

Probably not until the day of the release. We didn't get to see the cover of OotP until they hit the shelves either.

For OOTP, the cover art was released several months before the book came out. If similiar to OOTP, we should see the cover art soon.
Another thing, on both Amazon and the Bloomsbury poster the color purple is used. I wonder if this is a clue. I would not be surprised is the book is purple, because it is the color of royalty.

I can see a face, but I really don't think it means anything. You can go outside your house and see "faces" in every cloud, rock and piece of wood, so I don't think we should attach too much importance to it.

Go back to page 13, post 386, of this thread. That's where I first posted what I see in the clouds. Then read the next few pages and they show some screenshots of what they see also. I am somewhat "computer challenged" and haven't been able to do those screen shots and then draw on them very well yet.

Golden Snidget March 6th, 2005 2:09 pm

I see myself holding the stone.....er, nevermind.

This is kind of fun. Yeah, like looking at clouds or inkblots. Often times I can't see any shapes until someone else points them out. Sort of like looking through another's eyes for a bit. Quite cool.

I'm beginnig to think we won't be getting an update until at least late March or early April. Wonder if Mackenzie is sleeping through the night yet? My sons were over six weeks old before they finally slept through a good portion of the night. A good portion being only five hours, but my husband and I were overjoyed. :D

ikuko March 6th, 2005 6:52 pm

it's different with different kids. Mine both slept 9 hours solid at the age of 7 days (ain't I lucky?). But I hope JKR has help, both family and hired, to ensure that she can get some sleep at night. Still, it is a lot of work, and her mind might not be on the site updates. A book in print is almost as much a baby as a real one, you have to read proofs, answer the phone calls about design and other issues, and so on. Your time is less your own then when you just write at your own pace.

You're not loosing it (this time!). The window shows both night and day, based I think on the clock on your computer.

I think Jean Piaget would be turning over in his grave if you weren't having a hard time seeing them HaHa. Abstract thinking comes with time. It kinda like getting taller, you don't realize things have changed, just that they have. Try these. Notice Dobby's head. Now look at just half of it. Looks like a bird with beak? There are a few "beaked" friends in HP, so not sure which one it could be. Notice that the "other half" of Dobby mirrors the first half. Colors are inverted for that. Ingore the other yellow tracing, just goofing around with it. SD

I have some abstract thinking ability although i admit not much. it's one of the many reasons i don't do art ( as well as the fact that i can't draw :p). What i was trying to say, is that if we see faces in all these places, are they really significant if they are not at least slightly obvious? I get the feeling that the clues are hidden but plain to see when you find their hiding spot. Get what i mean?

Okay I see the faces... But I don't think they are really that important are they? They don't seem to be familiar or resemble any of the characters. It maybe a a coincidence. After all, sometimes we are so intent on finding clues that we end up overanalysing every little thing that we see on the page.

For anyone that is interested in an easy way to kill tons of time:

If you go to this site:

You can then right-click and zoom in on JKR's website. You can hold down the left mouse button after zooming and drag the screen around to see it all.

Easier than taking screen-shots and zooming in on those for those so inclined. :D

No publisher needs to pay the author of the book for the right to announce a cover illustration. Many publishers don't allow their authors any say at all regarding cover design.

They can, if they want to, allow the author to give it out first though.

I think Rowling will show the UK (Bloomsbury) edition on her website, and not the US (Scholastic) one. :)

I wonder if Mary GrandPre read the book before drawing the cover? She read OOTP before drawing the cover, so maybe it's the same this time. I hope so because it'll give us (at last!) some new things to talk about :D

I just set a program for the Today show. I would be somewhat surprised if the cover art first appears on t.v. However, I believe Warner Bros. does own NBC. The Today show had far more coverage of the HP movies and book releases than any other morning program. I still have some of it on tape. Scholastic and Warner Brothers, of course, have close ties.

It's ok, Whiz. I'll still respect you in the morning. :p

While roaming around the Leaky Cauldron's news archives, I came across the announcement about GrandPre doing the artwork for OotP. I was expecting another "official" announcement about her doing HBP. Kind of surprised we haven't heard anything. Guess we're supposed to assume....

Yes, I'm dying to see that artwork. What fun everyone had trying to figure out what the last cover art was supposed to represent. I can hardly wait. :tu:

Warner does not own NBC. GE owns NBC with a small percentage owned by Vivendi Universal, and it is called NBC Universal. And even if Warner did own NBC it wouldn't have any influence over any matters concerning the books which are published by Scholastic in America and Bloomsbury in the UK.

But it is good to know that the story about the cover art is true. I'll set my tape. :tu:

whizbang121 March 8th, 2005 1:38 pm

It's Green!!!

*delete*

Hope they show the back cover. We had so much fun with OotP, trying to guess who Tonks was and about the doors and shadows.

Uh oh, I'm in spoiler trouble already.

But it's definitely green.

Please pardon my ignorance.

I'm off to finally get a good look at the covers. Had to get the kids off to school. Oh, happy days!!!

WoodenCoyote March 8th, 2005 2:05 pm

Well, JK's site hasn't changed for the event.

It's a common misconception that Warner has input in the publishing end of the business. They are very separate business with competing interests.

I've been on a one-person crusade to correct that knowledge. :D

Corbin Dallas, is that picture really the cover? What did you mean by 'stand-in'? Well, whatever it is, the book on the book cover looks pretty cool, I must say.

Here's the other version. The green one. :)

RedDragon March 8th, 2005 4:42 pm

just to clear up any confusion, the one with the book is the british adult version, and the green one is the American version.

nat089 March 8th, 2005 5:38 pm

WHOA! Okay. The covers just came out some time ago. THEY ARE SO COOL! All of them, except the UK Adult Cover, have Harry and Dumbledore on them. I like the Fiery look the UK Children's version has. But the Green US Version looks so good too!

I am almost screaming with delight at this news! The only thing that's stopping me is that it's 12:40am where I am and my whole family is asleep... Now I simply cannot wait for HBP! :D:D:D

No site updates, to my knowledge. It just that the covers have been released, and everyone is excited. There is a long discussion already about the covers.

I know that...my concern is that a bit of information this large should have at least gotten a nod on the site, and we're already overdue.

What do you mean by keys? The one on top of JKR's desktop leads to the fansite award section of the site.
