CoS Speed Writing Competition 2013

I am pleased to announce that the CoS speed writing competition will open on Tuesday 2nd April.

The aim is to write between 40000 and 70000 words between 2nd April and 30th June. We will not be counting words (I trust you, I'll take your word for it!), because I am pretty much doing this myself! I will say, if you want to share your story, you can put it into the Novella section, just add CoS Speed Write to the title, so we know what it is.

This isn't about winning as such, it's a test of your writing. A lot of us were discussing how NaNoWriMo seems a bit short timewise for some, so that's why we've got three months to do this!

If you're interested in taking part, post in this thread. Once the contest is launched, you can keep track of your progress here, as well as discussing techniques and well, anything else a writer may need to discuss! It's not a strict competition, either. If you've got a story you're already working on, that's fine to use. If you're a bit short on the word count, that's fine too, because you're still using the time to work on something.

I've never managed to win NaNoWriMo, I lose interest very quickly, because of the 30 day limit, I get stuck and don't know where to go. Hopefully the longer time limit will help with this. I also want to say that this isn't a copy of NaNoWriMo, it's just that the 30 day limit isn't for everyone, so I decided on a longer timescale.

Finally, I just want to thank you all for taking the time to read this, and hopefully be interested in taking part! It's the first time I've done something like this, so I hope it goes well!

Start Date: 2nd April
End Date: 30th June
Suggested Word Count: 40000-70000 words

Any Questions Contact Schlubalybub

Oh, and I'll just add- yes, I am taking part as well as setting this up...

I'm in too! I think I'll be aiming for the 40000 words. Time for me to start outlining my novel!

This sounds great! It really helps that it's at the end of school and into the summer for me because it's hard to do all that in November for NaNoWriMo. And the less strict rules also seems great for me because I might wanna keep on with something I've already started on. Thanks for the great motivator, Schlubalybub! :) I'll definitely try this out!

I'm interested, but April is too soon for me. I'll try to join in May.

I hope we'll be able to finish our challenge before COS shuts down. I'm heartbroken.

Re: CoS Speed Writing Competition 2013

To be honest, I don't know. I'm really hoping we can. Maybe if I change the date to 30th June, that would make more sense?

As you know, I wasn't aware that the site would close when I set up the challenge, but I'm not annoyed about it- the way I see it, our contest could help the site go out with a little bang...not really a big one, but it may help us.

It's sad, yes, but we could let this contest be our swansong. Nothing lasts forever, and I'm still happy to continue with the contest if everyone wants to take part? To be honest, when I first read the announcement, I thought perhaps I'd just abandon it, but why? I love this site, why would I abandon something that I'd set up just because it's closing...perhaps it was a pique of passive aggression. But although I had a little bit of anger when I first found out, I realised that this competition would still fit into the timespan...

So, I'll change the date to the 30th June for ending entries, and perhaps we can put the stories on a different website? I'll look into a free site or something to post the stories (I can't afford a paid site) so that we can share the stories after the site has gone.

Perhaps this post is a bit of a mixed bag...I'm sad and a little angry, not at the site, but at myself. I could have started this months ago, but I didn't. I guess I was scared. Scared that nobody would want something started by me like this. I guess we couldn't forsee this...it's Morgoth's decision, and I stand by that. I just hope that we can see this competition through before we close.

Sorry, this post was a bit self pitying, but I'm still not sure what to make of it. All I want to say is, let the speed writing commence!

I'm in! I'm so glad you set this up, Schlubalybub. Though I will be cheating (a little bit) and start the 1st, because that's when Camp NaNo (which seems more relaxed than NaNoWriMo) starts, and I'm planning to participate in that too, with the same story. Someone I met through NaNo is setting up a writing group, which is supposed to start up soon, so this will hopefully be a good spring for writer-me. :D

Also, I'm glad this is still going to happen. :agree:

PS. Let me know if you need any help with the organising. I haven't been very active here lately, but I visit the site almost every day, I just forget to log in...

I'm in. I managed to finish NaNoWriMo once, but it was when I was stuck at home with a broken leg. Maybe I'll be able to do similar in 3 months!

:huggles: I completely understand your mixed feelings. And I think the contest is still a great idea. I'm still busy with school, and that's not likely to cool off until mid to late May when my exams are over. But hopefully I can start writing soon. I'll just do the best I can until I can get some free time. Best of luck to everyone!

Figment is also an option. My sister is obsessed with it. Although I think it's generally used more for short stories than novels-in-progress.

Re: CoS Speed Writing Competition 2013

Am I first? Yay! I'll start us off.

Had to do a lot of research which cut in to my writing time. A necessary evil, though. Whatever possessed me to make my LL (leading lady) a flight attendant when I haven't flown in a dozen years or more? Today's airline industry is a whole new ball game.

So, bottom line is I did a little over 1K which gave me a total of 2K. The story isn't taking shape yet, but I know the players and the setting at least.

Good luck, everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing your word count even if it's only a couple of sentences.

BTW, I don't write on Wednesday. That's the day I take my Mom shopping and she's a marathon shopper.

I haven't had the time to start, because real life decided to be busy. Not sure I'll have time tomorrow either, but on Thursday I do. I have a small head start, because I'm picking up one of my old stories instead of starting completely form scratch. But I need to type it all up, it's all handwritten and I can't do that much any more because of my stupid wrists. I'm not sure how much I have either. We'll see. :D

Morning Star, Walgreens has a soft brace with no fingers and a wrist band for about $10. It's almost like a latex glove. Gives you a lot of flexibility and a lot of support. I was a word processor for years and I had to wear one on my right hand all day.

I'm in a small dilemma because I have three stories that each have 2000+ words so far, and I want to use one, but I don't know which to use! The problem is that I am terrible at continuing a plot. I sometimes get the seed of an idea for a story and I write a little bit to go off of it, but I haven't worked out the plot in my mind or it's not something I'm familiar enough with or whatever, so I hit a dead end. I really want to continue one of these stories, but I don't know which one is the best writing or has the best potential for expansion. I feel like I'm stuck on all three--even after barely more than an intro. Because I have ideas, but I don't know where to go with them. GAH!

I totally understand how you feel! I've got about four stories on hold and I keep switching between which one I want to work on. I haven't even started writing yet because I changed the story I was going to write and now I need to do more research/outlining for it. I'd recommend that you do a quick plot outline/sketch for each of your stories and maybe that will help you decide which one has the most potential. Or you could write a little of each one everyday and hopefully you'll find the one that appeals to you most? Sometimes I find that works for me. Hope it helps :)

Re: CoS Speed Writing Competition 2013

Pick one and stick to it. You really have to immerse yourself in the story, and if you do, the words will come.

Know your characters. Write a very brief physical description, personality type, station in life (housewife, student, lawyer). You can expand on that later.

Most importantly, let your characters take you where they will.

Here's the opening of my latest novella. From the beginning, we know the name of the MC, that she has a sister, and how she's feeling right now. The initial conflict has also been set up in about 500 words. I use italics a lot in this one because April tends to over-dramatize everything.

April hated her name.

She hated that she was born in April and named April. She hated April showers and most of all she hated it when someone said, as they inevitably did on meeting her, "April showers bring May flowers."

And yes, her younger, prettier sister was named May. The one they always said was as pretty and sweet as a spring flower. Okay, so May was more than pretty, and wasn't she just the sweetest thing on two legs, but April wasn't exactly the mean, ugly stepsister. She could be sweet when she wanted to.

Hope that helps.

Just wanted to let you know, your story already has me hooked! Great intro :)

So I've got a question which I suppose I'll just post here. Do you guys know any good writing forums? By that I mean like places where writing is truly discussed and dissected and everything. Since CoS forums won't be around anymore (:(), I've been really wanting to join a writing forum because I find them so useful when working on a story (and keeping motivated!). I'm hoping that CoS forums will be around at least until this contest is over and I'll have you guys to keep me going but I would also like to find another forum that I can start getting familiar with. I've tried the one on NaNoWriMo but didn't really like it and many of the others I've tried were either a) extremely disorganized or b) more focused around posting stories and getting feedback. Thanks!

Hi everyone!

I've set up a forum where we can post our speed write submissions, I don't know how long it'll last, but it'll be there for the duration of the competition at least. Feel free to join over there! I'm not trying to take people away from CoS early, I just want to make sure that we still have our submissions to read through when the forum closes.

If people don't agree with this, let me know, but I hope it's OK.

No, unfortunately, I don't. All the authors I know are looking for a place to discuss the craft, but most of us are only interested in things like marketing, getting reviews, cover design and blurbs.

There are plenty of blogs that can give you writing tips, but don't follow them slavishly, either. You'll see a lot of conflicting advice. For example, Stephen King says adverbs are pernicious weeds and should be rooted out. Okay for his genre, but I write romance and they help with the imagery. I don't go overboard with the -ly type of adverbs, but I do use them because I'm looking for a different mood than King is.

There is a small forum I frequent that's not very busy. If enough of you are interested, I can ask the admin to set up a corner for us to post in. He's my mentor and the one who got me my start. Nice guy.

Glad my story got you hooked. My goal is to get myself hooked in the first few paragraphs so I can let April tell her own story in her own words.

You can plot and outline until you're blue in the face, but then you have to set it aside and let the story flow. You've already absorbed all you need to know when you do the outline and all you need to do after that is let it come out. But don't look at your outline again. If you do, you'll get stuck.

Sorry for the long ramble.

 Looks like we're in the same boat. I'm trying to do the plot sketch, but I'm still having trouble...I really am terrible at this. And I'm afraid of making it completely unrealistic since two of my three in-progress stories are set in an alternate society (for lack of a better term), and I feel like I need to research it, but I don't know where to start. Good luck with yours; I understand your struggles.

That's the hard part. But maybe you guys can help me? I've posted what I have on figment.com, so if anybody would be willing to read a blurb from each of them and tell me which one they like the best, that might choose one to focus on for the contest. Who knows, maybe I'll switch halfway through or pick the one nobody liked, but it might help me anyway. Thanks! Links below.

This is excellent advice, and it's very effective from my experience. I used to write a lot of fanfiction, and most of my plot advancement came from what I predicted the characters would do since I knew them so well. I just have to work up to the point that I know my characters as well as the characters in other authors' stories so that I can let them lead me.

I love it! It's got great voice. Awesome intro; I can't wait to read more! :)

P.S. I did create an account on the other forums (same username just for convenience's sake). I'm excited to start this contest! But I'm a little confused...how are we posting our submissions? I saw there was a forum for it; do we just post the entire thing at the end of the contest, or are we posting bits at a time as we write it, or just updating our word count...?

Your blurbs are pretty decent.

The first one is New Adult. Very popular genre right now. Might be easier for you to write since you don't have to create a world.

The second one will require a lot of plotting. Sounds interesting but you have to be very creative to do it.

The third one also sounds interesting, but again, I think it will be more difficult for you to stick with.

That's all just off the top of my head. I didn't read the chapters yet. I can probably do that tomorrow and give you a better opinion.

I let my characters develop on their own and each time a new trait comes up, I add it to the bio. The description is just something quick and dirty to start from. But that's me. Everyone has to develop their own style.

Glad you enjoyed it. It's already finished and published. I've got eight more written in the series and I'm publishing them once a month through November. Twelve in all. I'm working on another twelve book series (three done) and after that will be a six book series. Mostly novelettes and novellas. There are two more full-length novels I want to write and a spinoff series from the series set in WW II.

I also design my own covers and recently redid all the covers for the series April appears in and came up with a new concept for the series I'm working on. Very important that in a series you have a theme for your covers (branding).

Writing the book is just the beginning, and believe me, that's the easy part. :argh:

Being a writer these days is very different from what it was even five years ago. But what remains the same is the hard work, the frustration, the emotional ups and downs and the ultimate reward of a fan letter telling you that your work inspired someone. Heady stuff!

I didn't know that's what it was called, but I was thinking the same thing about it being easier to write. That's what I'm leaning toward right now because I can write a lot of it based on situations I'm personally familiar with.

Yes...this is my real challenge. Plotting is not my strength. But it's something I want to get better at. So maybe I should challenge myself? Geez I am not good at making up my mind.

:wow: I had no idea you were published! That's awesome; what do you need us for? Haha, just kidding. :D But really, that's awesome. Did you go the self-publishing route, or do you have your own agent and everything? Either way, congratulations! Where can we get a copy of your books?

Definitely. I haven't experienced the rewards or the pains of being a writer yet, but I hope to be headed on that route. :)

I suggest you go the easy route for now. Otherwise, you might get discouraged half way through and not finish. The whole idea of this challenge is to finish something.

My stories are very character driven. I start with a woman and let her tell her story. Everything that happens, happens because of who she is.

:wow: I had no idea you were published! That's awesome; what do you need us for? Haha, just kidding. :D But really, that's awesome. Did you go the self-publishing route, or do you have your own agent and everything? Either way, congratulations! Where can we get a copy of your books?
Life has gotten in the way the last month and I haven't been writing much. I need to get back in the zone. This challenge might be just the cattle prod I need.

Yes, I'm self-published, both print and ebooks. I'm on Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Itunes. When I sign up on the our new forum, I'll tell you my name and give you the link. I have 17 romance/women's fiction titles, 2 graphic novels and 9 illustrated children's books. I think that's how many. I've lost track. :eyebrows:

I'll see you in the other forum later tonight. This morning, I'm determined to go to Panera for breakfast and write there for two hours. If I don't, feel free to smack me upside the head. :tu:

OK, you can post what you've done as an ongoing thing, or you can post it up at the end of the contest- it's up to you, really. I just wanted somewhere where we could share our stuff at the end of the contest, and the end of CoS.

I'll be honest- I haven't started yet. I've been looking after a little doggy for the last week or so, and she's taken up all of my time that hasn't been working or sleeping- I've only sneaked on here because she's asleep at the moment!

Poor little puppy. Yes, they do take up a lot of time.

One of my author friends has two huge cats (one of which he put in a techno-thriller trilogy) that tend to sleep on his keyboard when he's trying to work. :)

This is why I don't try to work at home. McD's, Panera, library. These are my writing places. My mind is so used to it, it's like turning on a switch in my brain when I fire up the netbook.

I'm at Panera writing right now, or I should say, poking at the keyboard. I'm so out of practice. That's why I need this, and I will be posting my word count just to give myself a nudge.

I must admit I haven't started yet either. A lot of my time is being taken up with my blog when I'm actually home (I'm behind by about 4 reviews now). Hopefully I can get going with it on the weekend.

This Above All
To Sing My Stars
The Quest

I finally picked a story and I'm slowly building the plot. I know the characters pretty well so I'm not too worried about them. The plot is especially difficult because my novel is part of a series so I want to make sure I know which way the series is going.

I read the blurbs for your stories and I loved the second one best! It seems to have the most action and it sounds pretty intense. The third one was interesting because I love the fantasy-quests type stories. The first one caught my eye because reading about a struggling writer is definitely something I can relate to! Good luck with which ever story you choose :D

I have started! I've written two pages on A4 paper, which I know isn't a lot, but it's a start, seeing as the doggy only went home yesterday. I'm writing in a diary format, so obviously first person...I don't know how good it is, but I have been reading Bridget Jones and Adrian Mole recently so I guess I've been inspired...

I hope to get back to work tomorrow.

That's OK Lucy, I only started a few days ago- that's why I decided on the three months instead of one, although maybe that was a little long in hindsight

I don't know, it's certainly more doable than NaNoWriMo

Actually managed to write something today. Only about 450 words, but that's not too bad for 15 minutes

Very well done. My goal is usually 1K/1Hr. So extrapolating that out, you might have made 2K or at the very least 1500. WTG!

I've gotten some writing done too, about five pages (front and back). It's not a lot but I recently changed my plot a little bit so I had to make some adjustments. But now that I've started writing, I'm getting really into it!

Excellent!

Only did about 500 words last night. Not a good night's work. Can't wait until I can get back into writing 5-6 days a week. Got to keep those creative muscles flexed and working.

I know you asked me via owl, Desraelda, but if you'd prefer to use ArryGrotter's site to post your stories instead of the site I set up (in ten minutes, I'm not exactly attached to it yet hehe) then that's cool if ArryGrotter is cool with it :)

Re: CoS Speed Writing Competition 2013

No, I don't prefer. This is your contest and if you want to stay with the site you set up, that's fine with me. I just wanted to let you know about the new site.

Since everything I write is for publication, I won't be posting any of my work. I just wanted to post my wordage and maybe help or encourage the other participants.

Well, we could spread it through this site, my site and ArryGrotter's site? Just to keep track wherever people are :)

We'll just stick with the one site. I'm on too many forums as it is.

Well, I'm up to about five thousand words, which isn't great, but I've been a lot more busy than I thought I'd be this past week, my laptop hasn't even been on for a while...

I do all of my writing on paper first though, so I don't really need my laptop for the writing part, it's just the updating that I have a problem with sometimes- I can write a bit when I'm having a coffee at work or whatever. I've just had so much training to do in work, it adds between four and eight more hours to my workload each day's training.

Five thousand words is pretty good. As long as you're writing something your reaching your goal!
Last night, I added on two more pages and seven pages the night before.
Right now, I'm having the hardest time staying focused on my current story. I've got so many other story ideas I want to write but I figured I'd be able to stick to one. Now, whenever I'm bored with one story, I stray onto another. That's really frustrating as I'm sure I'd have gotten pretty far if I'd stuck to my original story!

I haven't gotten very far on this. I haven't found motivation for writing lately. Normally, I would just write anyway, come up with something even if it's not good, but I haven't even felt like opening my writing programme. :sigh: Maybe I'll get some writing done during this competition, maybe not. But I will continue with this story, eventually. I like it quite a lot.

Sigh. I'm sorry about not posting here recently, but it's been a very difficult time for me- I recently lost my mother-in-law and my heart hasn't really been in writing.

However, I've got to do something, and writing always helps, and we've still got a month to go :)

I got up to 5k-ish words, but because of a few personal reasons, I was unable to continue.

I wonder how everyone else did

Re: CoS Speed Writing Competition 2013

Hello, fellow writers! Obviously it's 2014 now, and this 2013 CoS Speed Writing Competition is long gone. But if you are still interested in writing, I found an awesome new tool!

It's called ilys.com, and it's fantastic! It prevents you from editing until you've reached your word count goal. You can only see one letter at a time, which I thought would be annoying, but it's actually very conducive to creative flow because you can only focus on what you're writing now in the moment instead of worrying about what you've already written. If you're like me, always fussing over every sentence and reading previous paragraphs, this is 100% worth your time. It used to take me hours to reach my daily word count goal, and now I'm plunking out 1,000 words like it's nothing.

I took a leap of faith and decided to do Camp NaNoWriMo. Unlike the November session of NaNo, you can choose any word count goal for Camp. But I decided to keep the default goal 50,000 since that's what the real NaNo is. So far I'm almost 25k in after only about two weeks. This is unheard of for me. I'm still shocked I got this far. And I intend to finish! If I can do it, anyone can!

Good luck, everyone! Seriously, give ilys a try. It's done wonders for me.

ETA:

I did it! I won Camp NaNoWriMo by reaching my word count goal of 50k during the month of July. My novel is still far from finished, but I've gotten farther than I ever have before. I know have an actual, novel- (or at least novella-) length manuscript. Time to power through till the end! However, I am considering putting it on pause to try my hand at the real NaNoWriMo come November. It'll be especially tricky since I'll be in school. But now that I know I have it in me to write 50k words in a month, let's see how I do with a little extra pressure added on.
