Re: Pottermore v.10

A Potions question:

I am currently brewing the Wideye potion. I always do fine on the first step of the potion. However, on the second stage, when I try to stir counter-clockwise, it doesn't work properly, it only lets me stir clockwise!

I mean, I have to stir downwards to stir counter-clockwise, but it will only let me move upwards/to the left...maybe I just start it wrong, and then it won't let me verify my mistake even when I stir correctly? Or maybe I'm just not stirring often enough, so it won't let me continue even if I start right?

Anyway, I always stir wrong, then try to correct my stirring, and run out of time just at the end of the potion because of this. It's really frustrating and confusing. Any tips? Thanks in advance! :)

Wow.

The only thing I know to recommend is to start where the stir stick is and follow the rim of the cauldron, but it sounds like a glitch to me, since you can stir clockwise.

You may want to report it:

Fortunately, it did work out this time...just on time! ;) Thanks anyway, though. :)

Wow, I've just realized that the Wideye potion is probably the best, most efficient one...lots of points, not that difficult once you've got the knack of all the steps, and the ingredients aren't that expensive and don't run out that fast!

Looks like I'll make the Wideye potion more often now, instead of the Cure for Boils! (Antidote for Common Poisons is too expensive, the others are too difficult for me right now).

About brewing - you don't really have to be extremly clever to figure it out. I'm sure members of all houses can do that.
You have to be determined - but I think that also Gryffindors and Hufflepuff can definitely be determined. Harry was definitely a very determined person, and also Hermione and Ron - all of them Gryffindors. Most Gryffindors in the book are really determined persons.
Hufflepuffs are supposed to be hard working - that should go in their favor with this scorring system, right?

I think the reason that Ravenclaw and Slytherin are leading, is simply because they may have been in a close race for the house cup almost since the beggining - that made their members to work even more hard, and to do more potions. That's how their lead got even bigger. And when that happened, and they got a decent points advantage, Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs had less motivation to do potions.

I am a Ravenclaw - and I admit I do potions sometimes to try to help my house to get a lead (Slytherins are leading currently - with less than 40 points). I'm not brewing like mad, and I was busy this week, so I haven't brew much - but I admit seeing the points in great hall gives me motivation. I doubt I would brew if we wouldn't have any chance to win the cup - because I already managed to do all the potions, and brewing doesn't interest me that much as in the beginning.
But seeing how close is the race for the cup, definitely gives me motivation.

So I don't agree with you, I don't think that's the current house point scorring is necessarily the reason why the Slytherins and Ravenclaws are leading. If they restart the house cup today, it's possible different houses could be in the lead. :)

I wish the duelling is back soon, though, I've never tried it. :D

It is interesting that you think that. I have been on Pottermore since a week after it started and initially the race was between Gryffindor and Slytherin with Gryffs often leading. Then suddenly nearly overnight, Claws did not just catch up but ended up leading on the scoreboard. I never understood why Hufflepuffs have been this behind though seeing as potions is quite easy once you practise it a bunch of times...think the scoring might be skewered....

Also, I am not speaking for anyone but I think one of the reasons might be people don't really want to be in Hufflepuff. My best friend who always fancied herself to be a Slytherin ended up in Hufflepuff and has not been active on Pottermore since. I, on the other hand, always wanted to be Gryffindor got sorted in Ravenclaw but now am happy as a clam anyway. This is just a theory...please don't throw rocks at me for suggesting it

Zout theory is quite correct. Unfortunately many people who got sorted into Hufflepuff have abandoned their accounts, but as we have discussed already, many happy Hufflepuffs are just not into competing and winning and proving they are the best. It's just in the nature of things I'm afraid.

Is anyone else still stuck in a potions glitch? I have been stuck in one for over a month :-(

I emailed them ages ago and only got a reply last week but nothing has been fixed. Its really annoying and has ruined the Pottermore experience for me because with dueling down and no way to brew potions there is nothing to do on the site.

If the site opens to the public before my glitch gets fixed I think I may create another account.

Pottermore Username = NightProphecy196
Pottermore House = Gryffindor

I'm not sure if this is the right place, but I have a question. Is it worth me buying extra potions ingredients, etc in Diagon Alley the first time I go there? Or can I always go back if I need them later on? I can't decide if I should be frugal and just buy what I need, or buy everything in sight. Just like real life lol!

Spoiler: show

You can always go back and buy what you need--you don't need to buy anything in advance. The potion book even has links to the ingredients you need to buy for each potion.

That being said, potion ingredients are not generally all that expensive, on a per-unit basis. For instance, the unicorn horns are 21 Galleons, but you get fifty-something for that much. It'd take a while to use them up. Unless you make a ton of potions (like several thousand points worth), you likely won't run out of money on ingredients. If you're not careful, you might use them up on extra cauldrons though!

Do not buy potion ingredients just yet. You can always go back and buy because many of the ingredients are available to collect throughout the pottermore walkthrough or experience (like there is a bezoar in chapter 17...) So... collect those first and then get the others...

Re: Pottermore v.10

You never have to buy the following potions ingredients - you can return to the story and re-collect them:

Spoiler: show
Wolfsbane
Horned Slug
Bezoar
Mistletoe Berries
Dried Billywing Slings

Is anyone getting booted off a lot or is it just me. I've had to sign back in 3 times today and I know I clicked on 'keep me signed in' each time.

No, I've been long on several times today, and been fine. But I also open a separate browser window for it, too.

Has the site been glitching for anyone lately? For the past two days, I've been trying to go back to certain moments to recollect potion ingredients, but when I try to access the page, I get the pink screen of death. For example, I can access the Potions page, Great Hall, and Common Room just fine, but when I try to access http://www.pottermore.com/en/book1/chapter8/moment3, I get the pink screen. I tried switching browsers, but same thing happened.

Anyone else have this problem?

I saw a bit of that two days ago but for me it appeared to go away on its own.

I haven't been. Pottermore has been working a lot better for me lately.

Gryffindor struggling with potions over here,

I already mastered the cure for boils and the antidote for common poisons potions,
and I want to try and tackle some of the harder potions like sleeping draught, or the awakening potion.

but the few times i tried my cauldron blew up-more than once.

so anyone here mastered either of those potions and could give me tips?

thanks!

There are lots of examples of the potions if you google them, and for the first step of the potion if you know you've messed up you can press the back button before waving your wand, it's also really important to make sure the thermometer never goes over or under the lines you have to keep alternating between the orange and blue buttons otherwise your cauldron will overheat

hope this helps :)

Nice.

Mine is still messed up though despite the fact that I've reported it about 3-4 times(I would give them a few weeks and then report it again).

It's seriously annoying.

In a way it's sad though that even though I was only able to earn house points for 2 days on Pottermore since I got access on August 25 and my potion froze on August 27....I still have more house points than the majority of people in Hufflepuff. I'm in position 38,345 which isn't very high I know but this is out of 162,889 students that were sorted there and I only had 2 days to earn the points I got before my potion froze. So that's only 2 days worth of points and I'm still ahead of the majority in Hufflepuff!

In a way it just bothers me that other people who probably don't have a frozen potion aren't earning points and it's like in a sense I wish I had their account instead so I could earn points when clearly a lot of people don't care about earning them anyway.

Man Hufflepuff is so far behind in points now and I haven't been able to do anything about it for ages! Perhaps most Hufflepuffs just aren't that motivated and are more laid back....but I want to earn those points! I want to win sometimes! Grrr....:argh:

Must....earn....points....must be....successful....must earn....ahhh it's like a torture to me at this point!

I want to kick someone's butt in points. :(

Should I take screencaps and send them to Pottermore just to show them specifically how my potion is frozen? We aren't allowed to take screencaps right...but what if the screencaps are only sent to Pottermore to specifically show what exactly is wrong with my potion? x_x

I'm just...my patience....it's being pushed to the limit.

My potions been in the loop since around the second week of Pottermore opening. I sent an e-mail last week and they replied saying that they know about the problem and are working on fixing it. I guess we'll just all have to be patient :scared:

I've only tried the Cure for Boils once, and I did it all correctly only for the computer to tell me I failed because I didn't do it in the right order. I am in the process as I type this of doing it a second time. I'm at about 60% through the brewing. If it fudges again, I'll be ticked enough to report the glitch...

:hmm:

EDIT: 80 minutes later and it worked! Woo hoo! First potion done, and +3 house points...
