Here it comes, I think!!

Not the letting in of the general public (sorry, mirrormere) but the site is getting ready for some big updates. I'm guessing it's
Spoiler: show
Quidditch, Wizard's Duel, and Wizard's Chess...

http://insider.pottermore.com/p/pott...e-updates.html

Platform updates

Pottermore will be offline for at least a week from approximately 8:30am (GMT) on Saturday 3 December so we can make some further changes behind-the-scenes.

The work we’re carrying out is technical, so there won’t be many obvious differences to the site but to help us test our work, we'd really like you to log in and explore the site once it’s back online.

We’ll let you know here as soon as Pottermore is back.

I hope they open it to the public soon too. People have been waiting too long.

I'll probably need to make a new account to ever do potions again, which is annoying, and I want my sister and boyfriend and other people I know to be able to finally make accounts and get sorted.

Anyway, anyone else notice that when you go to the Great Hall and look down to where it shows recent activity....that you hardly see any active people that are Hufflepuffs? -_- *sigh* The house I got sorted into is just so abandoned by most people.

I mean honestly I went down to show all most recent comments in the Great Hall and I clicked down through PAGES and PAGES where you click "show more" at the bottom and I still haven't seen another Hufflepuff.

MerryLore, I'm thinking that "technical behind the scenes stuff" does not mean any new competitions. That would be more "front and center" which the updates say they are not...

I am hoping that these new updates will carry more weight of the potions freezes and chapter locks that many have been experiencing. I am hoping that these technical issues are resolved as it seems that people are avoiding Pottermore because of these issues.

As for Hufflepuff house, there's not much that can be done about that. I am sure that even in the story there are years at a time where a house will go without earning a competitive amount of house points, based on the general populus. There will always be the Diggory's of Hufflepuff, but it may just be a general thing where the house cup is shared between two to three houses, rather than having a close competition between all three. I will have to look in my books, but the house cup points scores were only given once (I believe) and there was not much competition at the 3rd place and 4th place level...

I think you're right. I sincerely hope the next week or so while the site is down, they'll work on resolving the site bugs once and for all. I would think this would be top priority. Perhaps the new additions will come later in the month.

I've been a bit out of the loop; did they say there would be new additions?

I think captain_mills is right--the wording seems to indicate bugfixes, infrastructure improvements, reconfigurations, the like.

I think it's much more likely that those additional games belong to the other books. For instance Quidditch being released with CoS etc. I could be wrong of course. But I hope they make absolutely sure Potions and the duelling work before they add more games.

Taking the site down a whole week (at least) does indicate major infrastructural work. I do not understand much of the internet business, but it seems they finally are taking action to clean up the glitches and improve the site as a whole. I am very pleased to see this. I wish them good luck and that all runs smoothly with their tests.

As to Hufflepuff activity, I must admit I'm one of the people who were fairily active for two or three weeks after I got in and then I just stopped going to the site. Potions is very cool, but it does get boring after a while. Now some people are extremely competitive and brew all day long to get house points (Hufflepuffs!!!). I follow this group on Facebook and you can see how engaged they are! Of course it probably is a small group of people, but they are active.

Well as a Hufflepuff, I just haven't had time to log on. Besides, I'm terrible at brewing potions, and I wouldn't me much help anyway.

I know that most of the work this week will most likely be to improve the performance of the site but from the phrasing of the insider post it sounds like there may be some new aspects. It said there wouldn't be 'many obvious changes' but that could mean something new.

I really think they will be adding sound effect soon. I got my copy of Deathly Hallows Part 2 yesterday and watched all of disc 2 this morning and in the Pottermore preview behind the music there were sounds specific to the scenes. For example in the Forbidden Forest scene I could hear wind and owls in the background. It seems odd that they would record these sound effect and not use them in the actual site. Also I really hope Sony create a version of Pottermore for the Playstation. The moments looked amazing on TV much more detailed that on the computer.

I wanted to sign up for the Beta, but everytime I wanted to answer the questions, it was too late, the site was closed for the day. they have had more problems than you can shake a stick at.
And now I read that they are going off-line to work on some more problems. this is so disappointing.
Just give us an encyclopedia and be done with the fooling around with Pottermore.

In a way I'm glad the sites down atm. Hopefully they'll use that time to fix the potions glitches.

Pottermore has a new survey they're wanting everyone to take, whether they're a BETA member or not.

It's about....e-books....

They can go back and re-read where necessary. I'm not talking about leaving the reader in a complete lurch, but taking time out to plot dump for three paragraphs in a way that doesn't advance the plot is often a waste of time. I'd rather the details be leaked out little by little, so we have the pleasure of working things out. Sometimes, I think it suggests the authors are just a little too proud of their world creation and want to explain it to hear themselves speak.

I'm curious. How would you apply this to Pottermore? I have mixed feelings. I think it paid off in the end for JKR to not have really explained everything. People are still talking and joining forums like these, trying to figure out various plot points. And now Pottermore may explain things better. At the same time, do we really want more detail? Wouldn't we really prefer to keep the stories as they are in our own minds, without the author's own interpretation of her works interfering?

It's like JKR's interviews. I don't agree with everything she says. Sometimes she contradicts herself. It can be interesting reading things such as McGonagall's backstory, however, and we did learn some interesting information about Ollivander, as well as how she came up with some of her ideas for the book. But there's a discussion here on CoS which house Umbridge was sorted into - do we really need to know for sure? Do we really need to know why Snape's patronus was a doe? Or is the fun in the speculation? Is she robbing us in the end?

Thanks for letting us know. I'm really interested in the ebooks and mildly interested in the audio books. I want to buy the ebooks as soon as they're available and I do want the audio books, just not in such a rush. The audio books are available if I want to purchase the CDs (and I don't).

Pottermore is back online and there have been (seemingly small) changes made.

Re: Pottermore v.10

So, anyone recognize what the changes were? I might assume that people who were having problems with potions are still having the same issues, right?

The one change I found is that my potions page now has an active button for each potion.

-eta-
There's a note on Pottermore Insider; not much changed IMO.

I just logged in on pottermore, but I don't really see any changes. Fortunately, I see wizard's dueling is under maintenance at the moment :D Hope they'll release CoS soon enough too. Going to check the insider :)

Changes? I just started to brew Wideye - they've moved the Dried Billywing Slings, and now we only have to wait 45 minutes to return to the second part, so they've lowered the wait time.
