Bellatrix Non-Haters Non-Anonymous
Okay, don't throw stones and/or tomatoes yet. I definitely do not like Bellatrix Lestrange, but I don't hate her with the fiery passion most people here seem to.
The terrible things she did were torturing the Longbottoms into crazies, killing Sirius, and undoubtedly other unnamed DE tasks. We don't even really know the Longbottoms well, just Neville, and yes we feel bad for him and are inclined to hate Bellatrix for robbing him of coherent parents. She did kill Sirius, but it's not like she AKed him; she Stupefied him and he fell into the veil. Supposedly she gave a scream of triumph, but this is from Harry's perspective, and he'd definitely think any screams from her would be triumphant. I'm not saying it was a scream of sorrow, but unless she said, "Yahoo! I killed my cousin, let us rejoice!" I'm open to the possibility of it being a shout of surprise. Sirius wasn't running terrified from Bellatrix, he seemed to treat it like a game, and maybe his death was accidental. I'm not expecting people to agree with me for the most part, but am hoping someone can sort of see where I'm coming from. And if you feel the need to post vehement arguments, go right ahead. But maybe you can admire me for my bravery to fly in the face of public opinion? *bats eyelashes* In regards to pelting things in my direction, please observe moderation in all things. ;) |
Did she stupify him? Was that the curse she was throwing? I wasn't sure if it was the curse or the veil that killed him. Does it say that? When I first read it I was shocked that he was killed by a curse but then I had to go and reread it five seconds later and I thought he was killed by the veil. I still don't know which. And Bellatrix was one of the few who went looking for Voldemort and that is her claim to fame. She wants to be number one in V's eyes! Personally I think she is capable of doing damage.

~tosses a peanut in BellatrixOrTreats's general Direction~ I like her. Not because she's awesome or anything, but because I love to hate her! she's not like Umbridge who I just hated! I really like to hate Bella ( as odd as it might sound) and would be quite dissapointed if she were given a 'quick' death. Perhaps it was a suprised shout, but regardless, she seemed to be gloating afterwards.
|
You're not wrong. Bellatrix was Tom Riddle's most dedicated and ardent supporter; even when she was emprisoned in Azkaban. All she can see is blind loyalty to Tom and living to enjoy cruelty.
|
I don't hate her either. Yes she did a terrible thing by killing Sirius but if she didn't do that... the book would've been so flat and 'uninteresting'. Umbridge is nothing more than a b****..(she's a flat, stereo-type character)... where Lestrange definitely is more interesting and has more to her than just 'death eater'.
|
I'd have to say that I admire her. I mean, if you're gonna be a total sociopathic escaped convict, following a man who claims that he will dominate the earth, you gotta at least be proud of it. Which, of course, she is.
I don't think that I can hate a fictional character, either. |
I love her in the way I love Hannibal Lector as a character. Nutso murderer. Unfortunately, I doubt she's anywhere near as intelligent, or terrifying, but you have to have a baddy somewhere in the book.
Someone you can just -hate-. People fear Voldemort. People can hate Bellatrix, but you have to love that she'll shake things up. That's why she ended up my first OoTP fan art. |
pwk- i agree. we love to hate this character... she is no doubt an EXCELLENT witch and she is very powerful, but horrible as well... i think the majority of us want to see her die or be hurt by either neville or harry. (yes, i realize that the title of this thread is bella's non-haters, and yes, i realize what my username is, but i couldnt help myself.)
|
I love to hate her. If she and the other baddies weren't in the story then who would we hate? Harry? The Weasleys? We need a character like her.
|
Yeah, the thing I love about Bellatrix is that I hate her. Absolutely. but she does really spice up the plot. WE do need her in the story, yet, I agree with LestrangeMustDie. I really like to see her get killed

Yeh I have to say I love to hate her too. She was my favourite villain, she's just such an evil character, I agree with the Hannibal Lector comment above. In the same way as the above poster, I hate Umbrige in a way I can't wait to see her go out of the books, but I want Bellatrix to stay because she's such a good character.

One question - is Bellatrix African-American? Because Jk sometimes says she was a 'tall, dark' woman, but I thought that was just 'dark' as in nasty, you know? But this question has been bugging me, so if anyone knows the answer, that would be great. ;)
|
perhaps... i always figured the dark referred to her hair... i dunno, doesnt much matter to me.
|
Me either, but I'm really getting curious now, and I like to visulise character when I'm reading about them.
|
ah, i understand... i think it was just referring to her hair... she is directly related to sirius, and in the black family, black hair is a characteristic. come to think of it, black everything is a characteristic of the black family... black dog, black hair, the dark side... hmph. perhaps she is indeed black. curious...
|
I don't think she's black because JKR would have stated so. Like with Kingsley Shacklebolt..she specifically states that he's black. I think the 'dark' meant that she's mysterious. The only things I can say I love about Bellatrix is her appearance (as I picture it in my head) and her name. I didn't think she'd actually kill her own cousin. I totally despise her...but I sort of don't want to? She'd be a very cool character if she didn't kill Sirius. Infact up untill that point I think I liked her. But taking away Sirius from me...that just isn't cool. So basically my answer would be... I hate her passionately, but she's cool, but she needs to die a slowwww and very painfullll death. At the hands of Harry or Lupin, who both equally deserve to kill her.

I think she's described as having dark features, but this doesn't infer that she's black. I'm fairly sure JKR would have described her as such if this was the case. |
Lee Jordan is never described as "black" as far as I can remember, just as "having dreadlocks."
Yet in the movie, he's black. I think JKR is voluntarily avoiding the issues of race by not describing them, so they don't become a focus for us. Her main point in those books it against intolerance and for mixing things. *shrugs* Come to think of it, the Patil twins surely are too (having Indian names), and are never described so. I don't remember Cho being described as asian either. *shrugs again* |
