Re: The Prophet Debates

Molly and I are thrilled to present our foundation to you:

Name: "A Jumper for Every Child"

Logo:

Mission Statement:

A Jumper for Every Child organizes volunteers from all walks of life in Wizarding Britain to provide decent clothing for children in need and raise awareness of poverty and neglect so that every child can experience tangible proof that they are special and cared for by their community.

Statement of Purpose:

The aim of our organization is to provide much needed assistance for British children in magical families, whether they be orphaned Witches and Wizards, Squibs, or Muggle children living with magical relatives. We will search out those who are impoverished and in need of clothing and accessories, which will then be knitted by volunteers. We will raise funds for the purchase of additional clothing for such children. Finally, we will strive to raise the understanding of the public about the plight of the poor, neglected and orphaned children, who deserve every ounce of our love and affection.
Thank-you letter from a needy child who received a jumper.

Fund-raising activities:
  • Sell mini-jumper pins to wear and mini-jumpers as doll clothes.

  • Mobilize children into fundraising activities, such as "Knut for a Gnome". Children ask their neighbors for donations in exchange for De-gnoming their yards or performing other useful chores.

  • A "triwizard style" tournament. This friendly competition for the children of Hogwarts and the International Wizarding community will be called the Cedric Diggory Memorial Tournament, and will consist of fun magical tasks to be completed by participants. Children will compete in various age groups so as to even out the playing field. The tournament will be held on 21 April in conjunction with the Diggory/Weasley charity event, "Honor the Earth Day". The tournament will raise funds off of entry fees for the kids (who may seek sponsors to compete), and off corporate/individual sponsorship. Top sponsors of the event will be members of the panel of judges for the tournament – including George Weasley, who will also be providing prizes for the winners. All funds collected from the tournament will benefit "A Jumper for Every Child".

  • Sponsored Knitting Bees
The WI (Witches Institute) will organize Sponsored Knitting Bees in wizarding communities across the British Isles on behalf of “A Jumper for Every Child”. Volunteer knitters will recruit sponsors to sponsor them to knit jumpers/socks/blankets. The jumpers, socks and blankets will then be distributed to children in need.

  • Charity Books: Molly and Severus have each authored books for the charity. Molly's book is about knitting patterns, while Severus' focuses on improvements to potion making.
For more information about the Books for Charity:
    http://www.cosforums.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=747

  • A charity fashion show and song: Singing sensation Celestina Warbeck has generously consented to host a Fashion Show at her mansion showcasing the jumpers. Other clothing from top Wizarding designers will be modeled and auctioned off for the charity. Models will be students from Hogwarts. The show will also feature the debut of Celestina's new single, “The Greatest Magic is Love”. All profits from the performance and distribution of this single will be donated to the charity.
For more information about the Fashion Show:
    http://www.cosforums.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=749

  • A charity Quidditch Match: A match to be played annually between a team of current and former professionals and a team of Wizarding celebrities will benefit the charity. Funds will be raised from admission fees and donations raised at the event. Recipients of “Jumper” donations will be invited to attend the match for free.

Candidates’ statements:

I do not speak of it much, but I feel it is important to share this here, for the benefit of this worthy charity.

I was raised in economically straitened circumstances by parents whose relationship had soured. I attended a Muggle primary school, in which the children, like children everywhere, could be unthinkingly cruel to those among them who seemed different. The clothes my parents provided, which were shabby, outdated, ill-fitting, and sometimes hand-me-downs from my mother, marked me as different. In truth, if I had not had the good fortune to meet one true friend who was willing to see beyond my unpromising exterior, I fear I might have lived and died a Death Eater. The priceless gift of her friendship that I received is something I cannot hope to repay, but the sense of being valued, and the strength it has given me over the years are things I can help to provide to others in need through the “Jumper for Every Child” program. There are children in our world today living in similar circumstances. I believe this program can make it easier for them to make better choices than I myself did.

-Severus Snape

***

It was like any other day at the Burrow. Ginny had come over for the weekend and both of us were catching up on the past couple of days since I had last seen her. For long, we were the only girls of the Weasley clan and once in a while, both of us yearned for some sanity in our conversations.

During the course of our catching-up, I mentioned to Ginny about my plan, of starting to knit the traditional jumpers for Christmas. Each year, it seemed that I had to start earlier with my knitting to account for the ever-growing Weasley clan. Ginny expressed her amazement at my starting off so early and added that she had never known a person who actually enjoyed knitting more than me.

"I wouldn't be at all surprised if you soon start knitting jumpers for the entire Wizarding World."

Ginny's dramatic exclamation got me thinking. Teddy's reaction on receiving his first ever Weasley jumper immediately came to my mind. His whole face had lit up with happiness. The jumper had probably meant more to him than just a piece of clothing. If the same thing could be done for all the Wizarding children, their uninhibited happiness at receiving it would be priceless. With proper organisation, Ministry backing and volunteers, the idea of 'jumper for every child', was indeed possible.

And that's how the idea of this charity was conceived. It amazed me that so many of the ideas tended to originate from discussions at home. Charity, truly does begin at home.

-Molly Weasley

Re: The Prophet Debates

Bill and I are both passionate about the charity we're presenting to you:

THE CHARITY

NAME: The Wolfsbane Foundation

LOGO:

Direct Link:http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...oundation1.gif

MISSION STATEMENT:
The Wolfsbane Foundation's mission is to firstly aid those affected by lycanthropy and secondly, to ultimately fund research to find a cure to end the monthly suffering at the full moon.

The Wolfsbane Foundation - Making the full moon safe

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

Until there is a cure, we aim to provide a team of able potion makers and healers who brew the highly complex Wolfsbane Potion. This will ensure that victims of the condition can receive this vital potion before the full moon, thus easing the pain of transformation and rendering the wizard/witch safe to themselves and those around them.

In the event of a cure the Wolfsbane Foundation will aid the former sufferer's re-entry into society with help in finding housing and employment.

FUND-RAISING ACTIVITIES:

1. "Moonstruck" - A concert, starring Stubby Boardman, lead singer of the Hobgoblins. Also sale of CD's (starring the best of musical talents) and other merchandise.

Direct Link:http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/r...it_night-1.jpg

2. "The Full Moon Marathon" - A Broomstick Rally held during full moon nights. The citizens of the Wizarding World can join the best professional Quidditch players in this awareness rally, to raise funds for the Wolfsbane Foundation.

Direct Link:http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/r...l_Moon-1-1.jpg

3. An art exhibition where children affected by lycanthropy donate their drawings that are printed on and used as postcards and Christmas cards.

Direct Link:http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/r..._postcards.jpg

4. "Moonlight Dinner - The Feast For Funds" : A monthly feast and fair, where souvenirs, mugs, t-shirts, moonrocks (moonstones) etc. are sold to raise funds.

Direct Link:http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/r...aurant-1-1.jpg

5. "The Wolfsbane Festival" - A Festival that entertains as it educates and creates awareness for those affected by lycanthropy.

Direct Link:http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/r..._in_wien-3.jpg

6. The "Sponsor a Healer" Program - Donate 5 Galleons a month to help with the funding of these vital members of staff who shall help those affected by lycanthropy.

Direct Link:http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/r...galleons-2.gif

JOINT STATEMENT:

SIRIUS BLACK:
The Wolfsbane Foundation was created by the families of witches and wizards who are affected by lycanthropy. Its core objective is to make the lives of sufferers as safe, easy and as pain-free as possible. The majority of these sufferers are victims; they did nothing more than being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Wolfsbane Foundation has two aims. The first is to provide the Wolfsbane potion to as many sufferers as possible. This potion is highly complex and only extremely able potion makers are capable of brewing it.

The Foundation helps to recruit potion makers as well as healers to administer this vital potion to sufferers in time for the full moon. This potion allows as pain free and safe a transformation as possible. Although the Wolfsbane potion helps aid sufferers, it is by no means a cure, and I have it on good authority that it does not taste good!

The Foundation's second aim is to provide funds to healers who are researching a cure for lycanthropy. It will not be an easy process and it will take time, however all involved in this important research are optimistic, enthusiastic and determined.

Bill and I are both proud to be associated with this worthy cause and will be pleased to help in any way we can.

BILL WEASLEY:
As someone who has come close to becoming a werewolf and is still carrying scars of that brutal attack, I know how very important it is for the Wizarding World to help minimize sufferings of those affected by lycanthropy.

This foundation focuses on exactly that, creating awareness among the wizarding public and using funds to brew the extremely complex Wolfsbane Potion and trying to find a cure for the sufferers. We shall endeavor to help the society put an end to the stereotypes associated with werewolves.

Many a talented person has been degraded unfairly and denied job opportunities on account of his lycanthropy - no fault of his. That will be history and we look forward to a new beginning - a beginning that promises protection, understanding and equality

Re: The Prophet Debates

George and I are so proud of our team for all their hard work on such a worthwhile charity.

Name:

The UniversAll Children’s Education Fund (UNACEF)

Logo:

Mission Statement:

UNACEF (the UniversAll Children's Education Fund) is a non-partisan, humanitarian agency that advocates for children's rights -- all children of all races: centaurs, goblins, merpeople, muggles, and wizarding kids. It seeks to help meet their basic needs for a healthy life and expand educational opportunities so that they can strive towards their full potential.

UNACEF is concerned with progress of the next generation of the magical and non-magical worlds alike. To that end, it funds scholarships for disadvantaged magical children, offers subventions for the publication of updated or new educational magical texts, as well as supports the founding of schools for children of other races, magical and non-magical.

UNACEF further looks towards what policies must be adjusted in order to protect the rights of all children, and deliver services to them and their families with a special focus on disadvantaged children -- victims of war (wizarding and Muggle), poverty, disasters (which strike wizards as well as Muggles), as well as violence towards and exploitation of children. It promotes equal rights for all races, and all genders.

UNACEF works towards the realization of the peace and social progress for all races, magical or not, all around the world.

Fund-raising activities:

What can the charity do to raise some money for its cause? You will have to outline a general plan.

  • An Honor the Earth Day, to be held on Earth Day on 21 April every year, on the Hogwarts grounds, courtesy of HeadMistress McGonagall and the Hogwarts staff. There would be games for the kids, including the Cedric Diggory Memorial Triwizard Tournament, organized by Severus Snape and Molly Weasley (to benefit A Jumper for Every Child). George would be a sponsor and judge for the Tournament. There would be other games, on the ground, in the Forest, in the Lake and in the air, with kids of all races participating according to their abilities. A picnic would be catered by the Hogwarts kitchen Elves, with donations of sweaters and cookies from Molly Weasley; George, from his WWW shop, would provide toys, joke stuff, as well as the prize for the Tournament winners; Madam Malkins would donate robes and Muggle designers (Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Versace, et. al.) would donate T-shirts, polo shirts, etc. Non-magical toys would come from Toys_R_Us or Mattel. In the evening, the Weird Sisters would give a concert. Fireworks throughout the evening would come from Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. There would be a contest of jumping over the bonfires (no brooms allowed) where centaur and leprechaun kids would excell. Funds would come from individual or corporate donors and sponsors and those parents who could afford it.
  • We’ll also hold similar events inside Hogwarts in the winter, with the mermaids in the Prefects’ bathroom.
  • We would also have air/water/ground relays – The March of Knuts - sponsored by big names philantropists or organizations with the mermaids and the Giant Squid swimming, the wizarding kids flying on brooms, or riding thestrals or hippogriffs, the pixies flying, Muggle kids on land with the centaurs, goblins and other land creatures. The sponsors/donors would pay a certain amount for each mile covered by a kid of whatever race.

Candidates' Statement

Both candidates have to release a joint statement explaining why this charity is important and meaningful to them.

UniversAll Children’s Education Fund (UNACEF) is both important and meaningful to us for obvious reasons.
You all know how concerned we are about the future of Planet Earth, our common home. The future belong to children, the Earth we leave them will be their heritage. What better way to ensure peace, prosperity, social progress and good stewardship of our common heritage than to educate and train children of all races, magical and non-magical, to live together in peace and harmony, understanding, and with a good grasp of the important issues facing all of us on Earth?

UNACEF works to ensure that they grow up in fair and equal conditions, and with a good education. What better way to see to it that we leave our planet in safe, responsible hands, in a world prosperous and at peace, than to train children towards that aim?

Re: The Prophet Debates

Neville and I really believe in the charity we've created.

WizKIDS
Wizard Kids Integrated Development Society

Mission Statement

WizKIDS is concerned with the primary education of magical children from all backgrounds.

Our activities focus on three main areas:
  1. Classes for magical children of all backgrounds aged 6-10 on Satudays.
  2. Provide advice and information to muggle born children and their families
  3. Support wizarding families who wish to send their children to muggle primary school.
More Details:

  1. Classes for magical children of all backgrounds aged 6-10 on Satudays.
There is currently no provision for primary education of magical children. Our Saturday classes will introduce children to crucial skills and basic knowledge of the magical world. The classes are designed to cater to muggleborns as well as children of wizard families. This also offers an opportunity for children of the wizarding world to get to know others outside their family and close circle of acquaintances, and it gives muggleborns a chance to learn about wizards' lives and traditions - e.g. fairy tales, games, aspects of daily life. At the same time, muggle children will also be able to explain their world. We believe that learning together and mutual teaching is the best way to understanding and friendship.

  2. Provide advice and information to muggle born children and their families
It has been a long tradition to contact families of muggleborn wizards and witches a few months before they are due to start at Hogwarts. For these families, even those most well disposed to magic, this is often a major shock, and it causes great difficulties to explain the sudden 'disappearance' of a child at such short notice. We also believe that muggleborn children and their families should have more time to learn and adjust some time before the child leaves to stay at Hogwarts for most of the year.

Muggle families will be assigned mentors who well be on hand whenever advice or information is needed. We shall have more time to explain the Statute of Secrecy and to help parents to prepare, so that their child can be protected from suspicion. Moreover, it will be easier for parents as well as children to cope with the early signs of magic that most wizards and witches experience at this age. We also hope to encourage wizard children and muggleborns to become penpals, to encourage them to get to know each other, and to acquaint muggles with owl post.

  3. Support wizarding families who wish to send their children to muggle primary school.
Many wizard families homeschool their children, and do a wonderful job. However, we wish them to have the choice to send their children to muggle schools, which is currently difficult, not only because parents find it difficult to deal with muggle bureaucracy and prejudices, but also because they have to be worried that young children with little knowledge of the muggle world will find it hard to fit in.

WizKIDS offers support with organisation and administrative issues, helps with the school run where necessary, and makes efforts to place children of wizard families in the same schools as muggleborn children. We can also provide mentors for families and children (e.g. for help with homework). Moreover, we aim to offer financial support for wizarding families who would find it difficult to meet primary school costs (for muggle states schools)

We also offer internship for Hogwarts pupils:

INTERNSHIPS
Incorporated in our charity is an internship open to Hogwarts pupils in their sixth and seventh years, which we are in the process of developing together with Hogwarts and the Ministry. This will be an integral part of our charity, and also a crucial factor in providing as many people as possible to act as tutors and mentors for WizKIDS children. The work will be completely voluntary, and we are hoping to integrate it with muggle studies at Hogwarts. All volunteers will initially teach lessons under the supervision of a senior tutor, and there will always be a mentor at hand.

These internships are primarily aimed at students who take Muggle Studies and are interested in a career in the social or education sphere, or any kind of work with Muggles; but it will be open to any student who expresses interest in the programme. The ministry will produce brochures for career advice at Hogwarts, and at the end of their tutoring work in WizKIDS Saturday sessions Hogwarts pupils will receive a Ministry of Magic approved supplement to their NEWTs diploma, reflecting their work on the programme.

This initiative is designed to bring mutual benefits: the children have an opportunity to prepare for Hogwarts with staff who know the school well, and see it from a pupil’s perspective, while Hogwarts pupils gain an educational opportunity specifically focused on practice as opposed to the largely theoretical approach offered in the classroom. Moreover, we hope to create a better prepared and qualified personnel for the educational sphere and to foster better understanding between wizards and muggles – both essential goals of our charity.

In addition to our main aims, we also expect that our programme will offer the following benefits:
  • We plan to facilitate children's transition to Hogwarts, with visits to the school in the last year of the WizKIDS programme, and talks by Hogwarts teachers at Saturday sessions. Children will already know many others in their age group and a few older students when they arrive at Hogwarts.
  • Squibs will be given a better chance to enter the muggle world and to gain a mainstream muggle education if they wish to do so.
  • We hope to reach out to to take special care of children who are orphans or in foster care.
  • Eventually, we also hope to be able to offer child care and an early learning centre for younger children of wizarding families, to offer more wizards and especially witches with children to pursue a career.
Implementation and Scale of WizKIDS Activities; Volunteers:

We have been in discussion with the Ministry about access to the wizard register (where magical children's names are registered at birth), and the Ministry's reaction to our plans was generally positive. Wizards with experience of contacting muggle families have agreed to provide advice, or to remain actively involved with our efforts.

The charity will start small, contacting muggle-born (or muggle-raised) magical children, and inviting wizard families to participate. During the next few years, as we gain more funding, we'd hope to grow so that we are able to offer services to most children of the 6-10 age group, which, judging from current class sizes at Hogwarts, would potentially be c. 40 children per year, or c. 160 for all four years. Our activities will, however, benefit a much larger group of people, namely families of magical children of all backgrounds as well as Hogwarts pupils.

With the agreement of the Ministry, notification of muggleborns and their families is going to happen earlier, but the families in question will still have a choice to decline WizKIDS's offer of support. For Wizard families, participation in all our activities will of course be entirely voluntary, and any part of our services can be used without taking part in other aspects of the programme. Children will be able to join in or drop out at any point of the age range covered by WizKIDS activities.

VOLUNTEERS
WizKIDS has already found a core of volunteers for its activities, but we shall need more witches and wizards to get involved.

We are looking for people to
  • help out at Saturday sessions (teaching, play, helping out with organisation).
  • help with transport (via port key, floo network or side-along apparition) to and from Saturday sessions, school run for children of wizard families.
  • liaise with muggles as mentors, host families for muggleborn children or to maintain with muggle primary schools (some muggle expertise required).
  • help with fundraising
Please join our team: have fun, meet young people and make a difference!

Fundraising Activities

Rough Estimate of Funding Needs:

Costs of this project will be manageable, but we will need some funds, especially to cover running costs.
  • Rent for premises: a magically converted warehouse in NE England (where rents are comparatively low, and activities are likely to remain unnoticed).
  • Costs for food, books, materials, maintenance of premises, etc. Staff will be mostly volunteers in the beginning; in the long run we might need to employ an administrator, or trained education experts to act as mentors for tutors.
  • Funds to support poor wizard families to send their child to muggle school (if they so wish).

Our fundraising activities will be based on three strategies:
  1. Fundraising activities in the wizarding world.
  2. fundraising in the muggle world
  3. Long term funding
More Details:

  1. Fundraising activities in the wizarding world.
This will include activities that are familiar to most people, such as charity events (parties, balls, sporting events, etc.), charity auctions (home-made produce, supporters' services, objects donated by supporters). These activities will contribute to running costs.
SPECIFIC FUNDRAISING IDEASWe have many ideas for such activities: for example,
    • there will be an annual potions fair (potions will be tested by experts before they go on sale).
    • We are planning an annual household spell exchange, where everyone can show their special tricks, and also learn new skills from others. Experts will be on hand to monitor the safety of any spells presented. Money would be raised by selling tickets, and also asking for donations for food and refreshments.
    • WizKIDS will hold an annual Christmas skills and services auction, where volunteers offer their skills and time to the highest bidder. Whether you are an expert doxy hunter or a celebrated cake baker, a butterfly expert or simply wonderful at magic hairstyling: someone out there is willing to pay good money for your skills and services. Consider to offer a lot for our charity auction!
    • We shall also organise a range of social events for charity – e.g. a Halloween party, a spring ball, a summer party and so forth. WizKIDS is committed to bring the fun not just to the kids, but to the whole wizarding world!
    • One ongoing project will be the WizKIDS knowledge exchange. We'll offer everyone to come with any questions they might have, about anything - and we'll try to offer a good answer in exchange for an appropriate donation. The knowledge exchange could also provide instruction in various magical skills and so forth, depending on the range of experience of volunteers at any given time.

  2. fundraising in the muggle world
The wizarding population is quite small, and charity money is naturally limited. Since our charity operates partly in the muggle world, we would also like to raise funds there.

Due to the Statute of Secrecy open fundraising is impossible, but there are nevertheless opportunities to raise funds. We plan to open a crafts stall at markets and fairs: merchandise can be made by wizard volunteers and perhaps also the older children in the WizKIDS programme. We believe that there are many (non-magical) things that wizards can produce cheaply and quickly which will fetch a comparatively high price in the muggle world. Hogwarts interns could help with marketing research in the muggle world and get involved in organising the crafts stall and dealing with muggle customers.

Funds raised in this way would also contribute to running costs.

  3. Long term funding
Eventually we would aim to build up an endowment to ensure the future of WizKIDS. We shall seek larger donations or legacies from individuals, and donations as well as sponsorship from businesses.

Candidates' Statement

Hermione Granger Weasley:
I have vivid memories of my time in primary school: I loved learning and making friends with the other children. But soon after I had got into school, strange things started happening around me: the first signs of my magical ability. The other kids found me weird, my parent’s didn’t know what to do: you know, it’s actually rather frightening if there is no-one who understands what’s going on.

The mystery was solved when a friendly woman knocked on our door and delivered my Hogwarts letter, together with the news that I was a witch. It was exciting - but let's be honest: it was also a big shock, not least because it was just a few months before I was due to start at Hogwarts. First you have to get your head round the fact that there is a hidden wizarding world, and then you have to come to terms with the consequences. My parents felt that they were about to lose me to a world they could never be part of, and I was anxious about plunging into the unknown. But there was more: what should we tell our neighbours, relatives and friends about my absence? How to cancel my school place and the scholarship I had already won without raising suspicion? I always thought that we really would have needed more time to prepare and to understand the situation.

Of course, that’s a muggleborn’s story – what about magical families? As you all know, education is very important to me, and I think magical children could really get the best of both worlds from this charity. I went to muggle primary school, and I think those skills could benefit all wizard children, too, together with the chance to learn more about the muggle world. Don’t forget that my childen are growing up in the magical world, too: and I would like them to have the education and experience that I consider the very best available. WizKIDS allows all other magical parents to make the same choice, even if on their own they’d find it impossible to organise or fund a formal primary education for their children. Moreover, Saturday classes will offer a varied programme of early magical education, be it an introduction to friendly magical creatures, wizard traditions, and basic skills such as handling quill and parchment, keeping magical pets, or working out sums in wizard currency.

We also hope, of course, that WizKIDS’s activities will contribute to better relations between wizards and witches of all backgrounds: we are not just talking about wizard/muggle relations, this is also a chance for children to find a wider circle of friends well beyond their families’ relatives and acquaintances: just imagine a time when first year students on the Hogwarts express will be just as happy to be reunited with old friends as the more advanced pupils always were!

Participation in the WizKIDS programme is of course entirely voluntary: we hope that parents will recognise the benefits of our activities, and that parent feedback will allow us to develop our programme to make it a perfect fit for magical children’s needs.

Neville Longbottom:
Hermione gave you a muggleborn perspective – let me tell you about a very different experience. I was born into an old wizarding family. I grew up without my parents, surrounded by many well-meaning but mostly elderly relatives. They were great, a loving family, but I think I was quite lonely as a kid, scared because everyone thought I might be a squib, and rather awkward when other children were around. I think I would have needed WizKIDS just as much as Hermione did: I would have found out earlier that I would eventually have magical abilities; and had I been a squib, my future would not have seemed quite so hopeless. I would have benefited from meeting more children my age, and more people who were different from my family. I would have loved to learn more about muggles, too. If I ever have children, I'll certainly want them to have these advantages.

I can also speak as a Hogwarts teacher: I think the school would gain a lot from WizKIDS. Many children would know each other by the time they arrive at Hogwarts, and one would hope that these friendships would continue after sorting, leading to better relations between the houses. Our experience with muggleborn pupils shows that a muggle primary education is indeed a useful basis for our programmes. Moreover, Hogwarts would be keen to participate in WizKIDS’s Saturday sessions, to offer some introduction to Hogwarts, and to prepare children better for their first year. We would also like to help with designing teaching for the older WizKIDS children, to ensure that they have the best preparation possible. I am particularly excited about the internship programme. I think it will make a great difference, fostering better integration at Hogwarts, providing an opportunity for a more diverse school education, and eventually bringing well trained educators to the the wizarding world. It's clear to me that we need to create more such programmes, and this can serve as an inspiration for internships in other fields.

Of course, I am also keen to support WizKIDS’ fundraising activities. You won't be surprised to hear that my contributions will follow the gardener’s year, co-ordinating other gardeners' efforts, and of course offering my own produce and expertise: every spring there will be a seedling sale, we’ll have a charity flower stall in Diagon Alley for a week every summer, and every autumn there will be a big harvest auction. Moreover, for the Christmas skills auction I shall be offering an afternoon’s expert advice on gardening matters.

Hermione Granger Weasley:
Thank you Neville – good point about the fund raising activities! I have been thinking about that, too. I’ll be contributing to a number of the ongoing projects. I'd like to bring some special concoctions to the annual potion fair, and I think I know a few rare household spells that others may find useful, too! Since I left school, I have also improved my (magical) knitting skills and I am going to contribute as much as I can to our muggle crafts stall. I’d also like to help with the teaching on Saturdays, as far as other commitments leave me time. For the Christmas skills auction, I plan to offer a guided tour to Hogwarts, with a full introduction to the school’s history (including an insider's view of the Voldemort years). Most of all, I look forward to contributing to the WizKIDS Information exchange!

Thank you for considering WizKIDS: we think it's a very worthy cause which will benefit many, and it has a real potential to have a positive impact on the whole wizarding world.

Please support WizKIDS!

Re: The Prophet Debates

My minions have created this do good charity.

Name:
PODMO -- Programme for Orphaned or Deprived Magical Offspring

Logo:

Mission Statement:
Our mission is to educate and aid magical children, especially those that have been orphaned and those raised by or among Muggles, by acting as both an orphanage and a daycare centre. Our goal is to ensure that all Wizarding children are afforded an understanding of the culture and traditions of the Wizarding World.

Fundraising Activities:
Lucius Malfoy has generously donated a large portion of his fortune to this worthy charity, but he cannot shoulder the entire expense of opening and maintaining a centre such as this. The centre will subsidize part of its operating costs by providing a daycare service to Wizarding families for a small fee (which would be waived for poor families below a certain level of income). Of course, we welcome any donations from Wizarding families. We also have a number of skilled magical tattoo artists among us that have graciously offered to donate their time and talents to our cause. As such, we will be hosting a tattoo sale, the proceeds of which will be given to PODMO. Additionally, we will be breeding Pygmy Puffs and selling them to anyone interested, as a means of raising funds. Finally, Lord Voldemort himself will be auctioning off some of his mortal possessions, with all proceeds going to PODMO.

Voldemort:
Programme for Orphaned or Deprived Magical Offspring is both a wizarding orphanage and a centre for magical children from Muggle backgrounds. It is something both Lucius and I hold dear to our hearts.

This charity was conceived through my own experiences growing up in a Muggle orphanage, and being exiled back to the Muggle world, cut off from the Wizarding World and my wizarding peers, every summer for the duration of my Hogwarts education. Being left among Muggles who don't appreciate your gifts and talents, being left with no idea of your true magical heritage until your Hogwarts letter arrives, is no way to raise a magical child. And Lucius, being a parent himself, understands the vital importance of teaching young children about Wizarding culture before they begin Hogwarts.

At the PODMO centre, children with magical abilities will be offered the chance to learn about Wizarding culture and will be able to spend time with others like themselves. They will receive a basic education in magical theory and potions theory, as well as subjects such as reading, writing, and arithmetic, in preparation for Hogwarts. And through a special story hour, they will be exposed to the same traditional Wizarding literature and fairy tales as their peers who have been brought up in proper Wizarding families.

Lucius:
I believe that Wizards should be raised as such. Muggles, even well-intentioned ones, are simply not equipped to properly raise a magical child without leaving that child at something of a disadvantage in comparison to his or her peers in the Wizarding World. Even if the child is the biggest bookworm in the world, there are still subtleties and common knowledge that can only be acquired through experience. Being isolated among Muggles during their summer holidays deprives them of that experience.

PODMO aims to remedy this situation through finding loving Wizarding families to adopt magical orphans that have been left in Muggle orphanages, through allowing magical children the opportunity to socialise with their own kind before Hogwarts and during summer holidays, through holding classes to educate children about the Wizarding World, and through sponsoring field trips to Wizarding businesses, sporting events, concerts, and of course to the Ministry of Magic and St Mungo's.

Re: The Prophet Debates

Charity Name
YOU: Youth Outreach United

Charity Logo

Mission Statement
Youth Out-reach United is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to meeting the needs of children of all magical beings within wizarding world. Through one-to-one friendships with mature and caring mentors from all these beings we foster self-worth, positive growth and a sense of belonging as well as encouraging diversity, unity and understanding.

Fund-raising activities

1. Donation drives will be directed at wizard business owners. Documents about the charity will be sent to them and donation requests made.

2. Advertisements on Magical radio and in the Daily Prophet about the charity together with donation requests.

3. Booths will be set up at wizard fairs, and other like events, promoting the charity and asking for donations.

6. A permanent office will be opened located at Hogsmeade, where used Quidditch, sports, and other like magical items donated by the community are sold. One can also simply donate at the store.

7. Mentor-Child dinner. Annual. Donation required to attend. Here donations are made in the form of gift activities for the Mentors and children to participate in together. For example, someone might pay for them to attend a Muggle rock band concert together; or a trip to visit a magical location in a nearby country where the person has a home.

8. Mentor-Child bonding and fundraising events: broom buffing and selling cool drinks on hot days at stands set up in Hogsmeade.

9. Charity Magazine called "YOU won't believe this!" which is published four times a year and paid for by subscription. Part the subscription fee will be used as a donation and the other part will support the publication of the magazine. The magazine will provide information about the foundation and highlight some of the things the mentors and kids are doing together. The magazine also includes the charity's plans for the future.

10. Charity dance-a-thon. Popular Bands donate their time to perform music of all types and for the wizard world at large to attend, by donation, to dance the night away. Those who last till the end win a prize (donated by various businesses)

11. Donators Annual Banquet. For all major donations given, a highly publicized dinner is given to celebrate their benevolence. Framed paper awards are given to them and dinner is had. Local Restaurants can donate the food and chefs could donate their time to prepare it. The framed awards are donated by businesses. The place the banquet is held is also donated by that building owner. A general speech about the foundation, its goals, its achievements and needs is given and pledges for future donations are taken.

12. An annual magical tv show for raising donations. With famous bands performing, reports on the various charity's projects. And the people can call in (via floo) and have prominent people at the other end who take their donations. Preferably around Christmas.

13. Fall fundraiser: Charity Celebrity Quidditch Match
Ticket sales from Charity Quidditch Match; Auction before the game;
Concession Sales from the match; Raffle sales; Donations; Merchandise such as wrist bands, clothes, watches, accessories will be sold with the help of major businesses that manufacture the product. At least 50% of the proceeds will help the fundraiser. The fundraiser will work with popular businesses such as The Daily Prophet, Potterwatch Magazine and various shops in Hogsmeade will donate a portion of their sales to the cause.

14. A benefit rock concert with popular bands - all proceeds go to the charity. Some of the same ideas used for the Quidditch Match will be used during this event.

Candidates' Statements:

Ron Weasley:

I grew up in a big family. The Weasleys are a very loving bunch, and I know I’m blessed to have spent my childhood in such a close knit family who all stand up for each other. However, not all children have it as good growing up and to be honest, there were times when I could have used a friend, even with my big family surrounding me. Youth Outreach United provides child/mentor relationships for all magical beings in our world that need an extra friend in their life. It doesn’t matter what size family children belong to, what their background is, or what problems they are having, if any. They want to help. Kids should not grow up feeling last in their family, friendless, or in need of advice and no one to give it to them. YOU brings mentors and children together, helping to make kids feel number one.

Harry Potter:

I grew up in a household where I was shown nothing but mistreatment and neglect. I really could have used a friend while growing up. While the circumstances of my youth were special, that is not the case for most children and a friend can help pull them through tough trials; be there just to listen; share things with them; give advice and just be there if needed. Youth Outreach United provides mentors for all children, independent of their background or status. This well organized charity is helping in a way that is not only beneficial to children, but offering a service that has been lacking in the wizard world for a long time. I fully stand behind this charity and hope to offer my personal support to ensure its success.

Re: The Prophet Debates

The Magical Melting Pot

Mission Statement

The Magical Melting Pot is a program that helps bring together Wizards and Magical non-humans through education, understanding, and compassion. The program is entirely run by volunteers who do many things, from educating Wizards about Goblin culture to helping newly-bitten Werewolves find a niche in Wizarding society. We hope that through our efforts, the Wizarding world will become a more tolerant and compassionate place for everyone.

Fundraising Activities

Although the Magical Melting Pot will be run solely by volunteers, we will require funds to implement our programs. To secure these funds:

• We will organize charity balls to be held across the country for our organization. We will invite members of minority magical groups to be special guests, and proceeds will go towards education programs. As well as procuring funds, these balls will raise awareness and provide a way for people to socialize across species.
• We will form volunteer associations of wizards, house-elves, and other beings to create and sell crafts to raise awareness and funds.
• Finally, of course, we will welcome donations of time, service, and money from people of all parts of Wizarding society.

All of our services will be free to those who need them.

Statements from Luna and Dobby

Hello there, everybody. I decided to make my statement magenta this time! Isn’t it pretty?
Anyway, we both support The Magical Melting Pot because we feel that Wizards have misunderstood their fellow magical beings for far too long, and we admire the work Melting Pot volunteers have been doing in trying to help Wizards and Witches understand the ways of magical beings such as Giants, Goblins, House Elves, Heliopaths, Blibbering Humdingers, and many others.

Dobby has chosen green for his statement. Dobby thinks it is such a good color.
Dobby is so glad to support a charity as wonderful as The Magical Melting Pot. Dobby believes that the Melting Pot can help House Elves by not only teaching their masters about House Elf ways, but by introducing House Elves to new ideas. When they become aware that equal rights is possible for them, Dobby feels that many House Elves will be only too glad to become full and happy members of the Wizarding community.
