Tarzan

Did anyone see this when it was playing? I don't even think they had time to switch the cast, because it closed so quickly since ticket sales were horrible. I'd assume that everyone got to see Josh Strickland from American Idol as Tarzan...which was hilarious after the show since all the teenage girls were screaming over him

I went in with really high expectations, which was a huge mistake. The sets and costumes were great, but the new non-Phil Collins songs were laughable, and filled with cheesy one-liners. ("I've been waiting for this moment!" "I can't explain the way I feel...") And the ending was completely rushed, I was so confused because one second Jane was bidding farewell to Tarzan, then the next minute she comes running back like "Oh no I changed my mind sorry let's stay here together!" then the orchestra played and the curtains closed, and I was left asking "...Wait, what just happened? Did the show end?"

I guess that even the PG movie version ending was too much for their kid-targeted audience, so they dumbed it down even more. I was looking forward to a dramatic fight scene between Clayton and Tarzan...but no such luck.

Anyway...did anyone else happen to see this? What were your thoughts?

Re: Tarzan

I saw this in NY before it closed. It was pretty bad, IMHO. I liked the guy who played Tarzan but aside from that all of the magic that the movie had was lost in the musical. The only remotely good parts were when they used the music from the film. The "Son of Man" song was horrible. Just tons of things were really weird... like when the web sort of sprung out of Jane's dress. It was just too weird.

It was unfortunately one of the worst musicals I've seen. My bottom three would be Tarzan, Woman in White and Young Frankenstein in no particular order.

Re: Tarzan

Erm... isn't Tarzan rated G? Also, I thought Phil Collins wrote all the new songs as well. I could be wrong. But if it's true, I would say that Phil Collins is a good songwriter, but not a great BROADWAY songwriter. There's a big difference.

Re: Tarzan

In my ASL class(american sign language) we are translating 2 of the songs form the movie into asl and that should be pretty cool when it done. we are doing strangers and two worlds.
