Re: Swedish / Svenska

I ment subtitles, I'm glad there is no such thing of dubbing in my country. Watching the Millenium Trilogy in Swedish with Dutch or English subtitles sure helps me understand everything better what they say in Swedish. Ah well, tack så mycket! One of my favorite quotes from Ronja de Roversdochter as we say it in my language or Ronja Rövardotter is: varför du det xD And thanks to Millenium-trilogy I find using vafan instead of a swearing word in my own language more fun to use hehe ^^ You might not know it but Swedish films sure are good to bring extra words to my vocabulary hehe

Haha well yeah I can imagine. Va fan is awesome. I often add a 'men' to that (men va fan).

I love Ronja Rövardotter. I love ALL the Astrid Lindgren books and movies, but I love Ronja the most (along with Bröderna Lejonhjärta, Mio Min Mio and Allrakäraste Syster).

Well, I'm Swedish. It's fun to see people learning Swedish in other countries!

Re: Swedish / Svenska

Yep, it is spelt vad fan (since it's originally phrased as question, quite similar to what the heck).

That phrase is pretty harmless, but please remember to not exchange graphic foreign language swears for swears censored on CoS. That wouldn't exactly help the thought behind keeping a post family-friendly. Thanks!

Ah well, then I wrote it the way I've heard it: phoneticly spoken. My bad. And oh: I didn't bring this up just to get to know of more cursing/swearing in another language. No, I just brought it up as an example of the words I learned quickly in Swedish.

So let's jump to another subject. I'm still trying to bake my own lussabullar. Funny enough my mum baked them the way they should right from the start. I failed at it by trying to it my way. I mean, they are delicious. Too bad they are only supposed to be given during Saint Lucia. Guess I like the combi of saffron with raisins xD Once my mum find out about them while they lived in Sweden thanks to their neighbours she's determined to bake them during Christmass so we can eat them once I visit them hehe. Isn't that nice

Some people, myself included, don't always pronounce the D in "Vad", it's because of my accent. So when people write the word, it's sometimes misspelt like this.

Yup. Swedish isn't meant to be too easy. For example 'vad säger du?' is commonly pronounced 'va säjer du?' (translates ' what do you say?')

And in the Stockholm accent it's pronounced 'va säjerru', so we're dropping even more letters and combining words.

Not just in Stockholm, smålänning/skåning (lived there for over ten years) here and I pronounce it that way too sometimes.
I have the habbit of dropping the "g" so I end up saying 'va säer du' or just 'va sä du' XD

Re: Swedish / Svenska

Hello, I know absolutley no Swedish but would be really interested in learning a few basic words to see what the language is like (as I would love to visit there one day!)
Thanks,
Oli

I must also congratulate you on Lindt chocolate...without it my life would be incomplete!

Can't take credit for Lindt, I'm afraid. That's Swiss chocolate, not Swedish.

Basic words and fraces (for pronunciation, go to the link provided and click on the speaker icon on the left [Swedish] side):

Hej (Hi/Hey/Hello) - pronunciation
Hur mår du? (How are you?) - pronunciation
Jag mår bra (I'm fine) - pronunciation
Tack (Thanks) - pronunciation
Vad heter du? (What's your name?) - pronunciation
Jag heter... (My name is...) - pronunciation
Jag älskar Harry Potter (I love Harry Potter) - pronunciation
Snapes böljande mantel (Snape's billowing cape) - pronunciation

I clicked the pronunciation link on your post, Rhovanion, and google translate attempted to pronounce the Swedish transation in an English accent . I didn't realize this at first, and the first thought that came in to my mind was that the Swedish accent had changed in the last few years .

Haha yeah I know, if you click the speaker icon on the right-hand side, that's what it does. Use the one on the left-hand side. XD

For all of you considering choosing to read it, it's a bad choice. Choose another Germanic language instead such as German or any other related language.
I'm forced to say that every sentence in your post evoke urges inside me telling me to lecture you all on linguistics, as the linguistic student I am.
In the spirit of Hermione I'll enlighten you all about language myths. First of all, there are no so called superior languages. Swedish is just as good as English in every single way. But you can of course say that you prefer English as a language, though is not superior in the way I assume you mean. But of course, it's superior in the meaning of being a world language. But Swedish is equally able to express anything English can.

And to second part. One really can't say that Swedish has a "stupid" structure and is hard to learn, if you don't consider which languages the person already knows. For instance, if you speak a Slavic language it will probably be as hard to learn German as it is to learn Swedish.

I say, learn Swedish! It's a beautiful language! Though perhaps not so useful in the rest of the world. Thus you should visit Sweden, nice country you know.

But then we discuss whether a language can be more beautiful than another one, but I we can leave that for now :P

The member you quoted is a Swede who has learned Swedish as his native language. If that had been posted by anyone who is not a native speaker of Swedish the post would have been removed without delay as arrogant and insulting .

Re: Swedish / Svenska

I know this thread has turned a little rusty but I need it so badly!

Cough, so....

Hej allesammans!

Hm....hur ska jag börja? Så ja, jag är en tysk flicka (titta inte på mitt namn, tack), är treton år gammal och älskarälskarälskar det svenska språket och Sverige...mina vänner hatar mig eftersom allt jag vill prata om är svenska, Sverige, svenska, Sverige....lite pinsamt^^ Men jag är här eftersom jag har några fragor...

Oh well, I teach Swedish to myself and there are some things I don't understand and aren't explained anywhere.

"För fin för denna värld" (Song title) - I once read that you have to use for cases like this "den här världen", but WHAT do I have to use now??

And the words for "no" my book told me are "inte", "icke" and one worrd I figured out myself: "ej". I know the first one very well, i have never heard the second one in swedish, only in norwegian and the third one is from a song. When do I have to use them?

Would be very nice if a swedish-speaking person could help me!

Tack för hjälpen!

That would be tretton and frågor.

'Denna värld' is correct but somewhat outdated. I don't think it's often used in modern text except in poetry like your example. 'Den här världen' is OK to use both in talk and text.

Those words typically mean 'not', not 'no' (as in 'nicht', nicht 'nein'). 'Inte', 'icke' and 'ej' are synonyms but 'icke' and 'ej' are as in the example above old fashioned and you don't need to use them yourself, just understand them when you meet them.

In some circumstances 'no' does translate to 'inte' like in 'no more=inte mer(a)', but generally it means 'nej'.

People rarely pronounce the D in Vad here... "Vadådå", for example, becomes "varårå".

D in the middle of a sentence easily gets lost in general... at least here. For example, pronouncations like this may occur where I live:

Hur mår du då = hur mårurå
Vad har du där = Va haru där/Va harurär
Vad är det där för nåt = Va ärerär för nått/Vad äredär för nått
Glada barn = Gla'a barn
Det du = Deru
