Internet security

Security tips, security issues, software for greater security and anything else related to it, discuss it here...

Re: Internet security!

I. Use decent security programs (I use Kaspersky anti-virus and firewall, Spyware Doctor, CCleaner and occasionally Ad-Aware)

2. Remember to run regular scans.

3. If you have to visit potentially dodgy sites do not download all those wonderful offers they make. (I have a general rule that any site trying to get me to click 'install' is guilty until proved innocent)

I agree entirely with Mundungus; though don't do what so many others have - Purchased or download & installed excellent software, then forget it's there. You must perform a 'spring-clean' regularly on your machine. Run all of the different security scans, uninstall any unwanted software, clear unwanted files off your hard drive.I do make a monthly effort to clear out, if you mark it on your calendar or make windows give you a reminder it'll be impossible to forget

Re: Internet security

i was on a site the other day and i didn't click on anything but all these messages have come up saying spyware is installed on my computer. i downloaded ad-aware and did a scan and it came up with hundreds of things and i downloaded spybot search and destroy and it deleted a few things, but then i read somewhere that it's not very good so i got microsoft defender and ran a full scan which said everything's in order. but my computer desktop background changed to one that says i've got spyware on my computer. i don't understand how it happened and where it's all come from.

there's plenty on the internet about how to avoid it, but what happens if you're not that lucky? there's nothing about getting rid of spyware.

Re: Internet security

Can you change your desktop back to what it was? It might be just a left over picture file in the windows folder.

I use Spyware Doctor which seems pretty good but it's not free unfortunately

Re: Internet security

My dad installed the AVG software, and it is very good, because it actually works.

Are you supposed to empty out the virus vault and stuff that wasn't healed or leave it there?

Re: Internet security

Hi i am Not sure there is a best--for all systems, all times, and all users.

Also, I am not a fan of all-in-one security packages.

You need a firewall, an antivirus program, and spyware protection (detection and removal at least; some provide real-time protection as well as).

You can research alternatives at download.com. For each type, rank search results there by Cnet editors' ratings and read their reviews for their best choices; also rank search results by users' reviews, because editors don't review everything.

Thanks!!

Re: Internet security

The trojan and the spydoctor is the best or you can also try the zone alarm internet security. This is a nasty rogue spyware that installs a Trojan on your computer. The computer beeps removal instructions if followed to eliminate the error altogether. None of the other suggestions are correct. Hope this will help you.

Re: Internet security

Hello,
you can't do it. The only thing this three computers have is just the same antivirus with the same serial code. It doesn't mean you can link them together to get them working together and have the same alert (except the alerts related to the subscription you got).

Thanks

Re: Internet security

install a virus protection program or something. set up a firewall. use a browser like chrome/fire-fox. safari is okay but slow. IE, IMO is a no no!

the main thing though is use common sense. don't download anything your not sure of!

Personally, I only have a firewall set up. I'm using a Macbook, and have no anti-virus installed. I used fire-fox web browser. I use common sense. I've had no trouble with my security online.

remember, CONSTANT VIGILANCE!

Re: Internet security

I can't believe that people don't protect their wireless internet modem. Something like 40% of people don't put a password on their wireless internet modem. That's crazy guys! Do it.

Re: Internet security

If you ever get totally stuck, virused, anything, I've found the people at Bleeping Computer are absolutely the best. Chances are you won't even have to post a question -- you can almost always just search for the problem and someone else has had it, and solved it.

That happened to me once, got the Virtumonde/Vundo virus, and found out how to fix it just by searching.

Re: Internet security

I'd like to know you guys' opinion - I got this message a few days ago on my Yahoo email account, from 'Yahoo member services', official-looking but something about their style of writing was off. It said Yahoo were doing an inactive account purge, and that I should click the link they provided to verify my account, else it will expire in 14 days. The link had something about account verifications in its name, but when I hovered a mouse over it I saw on the bottom bar that it actually led to a German site whose name didn't have anything to do with Yahoo. I didn't click it. Another Yahoo user I know didn't get this message, and they thought it was a fraud email fishing for passwords. I'm concerned to keep my email account, but I must say the email sounds fishy to me too. Does anyone else think it suspicious, and are there any other Yahoo users that got this message? Thanks for any advice.

Stay well away I'd say, it sounds very dodgy indeed.
