Right, here it is:

Images

We all have avatars & signatures of pictures that we got from somewhere. It's virtually impossible to manage copyright on this account because it's so prolific. We're not the only website on the net to do this so I have no objection to images being used in on the site with one exception:

- Some images sit on websites with clear "do not reproduce/alter etc without seeking permission first". This is usually from websites that cater to art/pics like deviantART or Flickr or websites like Pottermore that have commercial & legal reasons for restricting reproduction of their images. People have a right to protect their work, so be respectful and ask permission. It's polite if nothing else.

So I'll say that beyond an obvious message from the owner/owning party to seek permission first, please carry on as you were, including manipulating images with funny text. We all need a good laugh, right?

In relation to posting text from other websites, the policy still stands. Link your source material always on here as that has a different legal context and it's important that people ensure they at least reproduce with all due credit to the author/originator.

@ Morgoth: I have a question regarding the asking permission to use photos and such.

What if you've tried doing such and still haven't gotten a reply or if the person's e-mail address doesn't work any more?

I've run into both situations myself before and just wanted to see where you stood on that.

Can I ask, if I want to put a picture up as part of my signature do I have to worry about copyright? I see a lot of pictures of Alan Rickman as Snape up in signatures and avatars, are these images public domain? If they're not and WB complains can I be charged with breaking copyright laws?

These images are in the public domain and are prolific across HP sites and many others. If the WB had an issue with them, it would have arisen a long time ago.

Hello! I have an ongoing topic in these forums (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=130099) which I try to update daily with new information on a sort of fanfiction project I'm working on (a fictional game), now, today, I can't put in a new post, because I am the last poster (my last post was yesterday) but even more peculiar is that when my post fails, it automatically pastes my new post to the bottom of my old post, where it becomes one really long post. the reason I'm posting it in smaller chunks is because it makes it easier to read, but this kind of defeats the purpose.

Also, when I put in my first post, a moderator added it to an existing (dead) topic, started by someone else, I was hoping the first post could either be removed, or the threads could be split up, because I can't get people interested in my topic if the first post is a block of text saying "I wish someone would make a game about this" without too much info or detail.

I'd really appreciate if someone could look into this..

The thread was merged because the topic is the same, potential MMORPG's. We are not allowing multiple threads about one topic, it clutters the forums. I am not going to delete the opening post either, since the member might return and is entitled to responses to their post.

There isn't much we can do about the double posting, unless you ask someone else to post or just wait 24 hours.
