They looked bad against teams that did better in that area. If they can't stop players with a better defense then they have, then they're in trouble.

Re: The NFL Football Thread v2

If my Pack don't make it tomorrow, I'm rooting for the 49ers to go all the way. A slim chance, but they showed that they can beat good offenses today. I know, if the Packers win tomorrow, that I'm scared of meeting their defense.

EDIT:

Wow, what a horribly played game by our offense. Simply no excuses for that. About 8 extremely crucial drops. I don't know how many fumbles... Well, there's always next year

Rooting for the 49ers to go all the way now.

Re: The NFL Football Thread v2

I was thinking of you during the game last night. I can't believe how badly the Pack imploded yesterday. No defense. (injuries) No special teams/coaching (onside kick in the second quarter?!?!?!?!) No offense. (Aaron Rogers was putting the ball in the breadbasket and there were tons of drops ) Poor kicking game....Was there any facet of the game where they didn't completely fall apart? The only consolation is it will put fuel on the fire for next season....Those Niners better step up next week. That game against the Saints, while wonderful to watch, was too close for comfort. They won't be able to do that with the Giants. The Saints defense was one of the worst in the league, I believe, and the Giants have a decent defense..... But I swear if Manning wins another superbowl I might become violently ill.

No offense taken - they played downright horrible. I was so disappointed and disgusted with how bad they played - especially the offense. So many crucial dropped passes, fumbles - No way the Pack deserved to win after that debacle. And the only thing I can think of to justify that random on-side kick was to get some momentum going... As you saw, it didn't work.

Well, there's always next year, and I'm just glad we did as well as we did in the regular season considering how horrible our defense was.

Re: The NFL Football Thread v2

That was ugly. It was really Osi's strip sack that changed the game, though (even after that HORRENDOUS end-of-half sequence). On a related subject, why did Yates go for a home run ball just after the two minute warning? The Texans were having decent success dinking and dunking down the field and they had enough time that they could have tied the game (or gone for broke with a two point conversion) with judicious clock management. Ugh.

The Pats crushed the Broncos again, but this time without spotting them the opening quarter. Lingering question--What was Aaron Hernandez doing carrying the ball for goal line yards with less than five minutes to go in the game. His modified end around was spectacular and he has decent lateral mobility and speed in the open field or in a broken field, but his not the Fridge or BJ Raji. He can't just run over or through heavy defensive line like they aren't there. Heck, even Gronk can't do that. They risked the health of half their passing advantage for a meaningless score on a position that wasn't his when they had three or four decent short yardage runners they could have called on (Law Firm, Falk, Woodhead and Ridley in descending order of effectiveness). What gives?

I can't believe the Saints let themselves get gashed like that after they basically had the game won with the Brees-to-Graham touchdown. Yikes.

Re: The NFL Football Thread v2

I've hated the Giants for more than two decades. It's truly amazing that winning and tying kicks had major coaching foul-ups in BOTH championship games. John Harbaugh let his team rush-kick (THANK YOU) and Cundiff looked like Mike V 5 seasons ago.

Coughlin actually allowed his special teams unit to suffer a delay-of-game penalty, moving it back to the same range that Cundiff missed from on the other coast in much better conditions. Didn't matter. Kyle Williams will probably never live this down, but aside from two shots to Davis and a dump-off to Gore where the seas parted, Alex Smith came back to earth with a thud.

With Brady and Gronk both hurt, I'm sorry to say that I have no confidence in the Pats at the beginning of the prep process. I'm thrilled Wilfork played an excellent game.

Sterling Moore was clutch when he had to be, but lost in the play he made on Evans at the end, he had single coverage on Smith on the second touchdown and had him dead to rights before the first down marker. Instead of wrapping up, he went for the Atwater concussion shot, bounced off and Smith socred a TD. BAD play. I am also mystified as to why Brady took went for the home-run deep post to Matthew Slater in TRIPLE COVERAGE. Pollard had to make a great play on the ball to force the pick (not as spectacular as Webb's play against Edelman in the first half, but a really good one) but the fact remains that it was triple coverage and Slater is second to last option on the roster. He's fast, but he hasn't developed great hands yet, and he doesn't have the size or leaping ability to fight for a Hail Mary. Surely, there's an outlet route in that package someplace.

No idea if Gronk will even be able to suit up, and the Flat-Top (Underwood) got cut on Saturday! Is the offense in disarray heading into the biggest game of the season? Yikes!

Ouch... My Pack wasn't playing, so I didn't really care who won, but I was kind of hoping and expecting the Patriots to win. But they didn't. I honestly didn't the think the Pats would give up another '07 performance.

Thanks! I need the sympathy! Totally licking my wounds. LOL I would have loved a Pats vs Niners/Packers/Saints game. If we lost to any one of them i would have been okay with it. The Giants are a thorn in my side, though.

Re: The NFL Football Thread v2

There's some serious stuff going down in the football world.

Tebow goes to the Jets (???)

Saints just got dealt a whole slew of punishments for the bounty system. Which includes HC Sean Payton being suspended for a year with no pay. Ouch.

I heard about that. And as for the Saints, those who were involved with the bounty system got what they were owed punishment wise. You do something such as that, you earn the punishment(s). There's no excuse for that kind of thing or that kind of behavior .

Oh, I completely agree.

Apparently after this recent investigations, they've found that bounties have been placed on Cam Newton, Aaron Rodgers, Kurt Warner, and Brett Favre.

Quote:
Payton received an email before the Saints' first game in 2011 that read, "PS Greg Williams put me down for $5000 on Rogers (sic)." When Payton was shown that email by NFL investigators, he acknowledged it referred to a bounty on Rodgers, whose Packers beat the Saints in Week 1.

Damn. That's just not right at all . And not playing by the rules by any means. That's playing a dirty game of football, plain and simple.

Re: The NFL Football Thread v2

Free agency hasn't been kind to the Patriots at all. They let Law Firm...er, Green-Ellis walk (which makes it look like they're getting even more pass-happy), and they lost Mark Anderson (who I seem to recall was their sparkplug for defensive and quarterback pressure in the middle of the season last year). With Falk retired, they have no proven running game and Woodhead is too small to be a go-to lead blocker. Yikes. They're still chasing the "speed threat" receiver. Lloyd this time?
