Well, the new season started last night. Thoughts, anyone?

I've really been struggling with both Clara and Capaldi, but this season opener blew all of last season out of the water. Sure there were some continuity issues, but the episode kept my attention, and I think Capaldi has finally found his stride as the doctor. And for once Clara didn't annoy me. It was a very well done episode.

I also love Missy. I hope we see more of her this season. She adds an interesting dynamic.

Well, I didn't see that coming for Clara!

This season has been a hell of lot better than last season, but it's still "off" to me. Capaldi's Doctor is just too much of a throwback to the old show: and although I can pretend it's 1974 when I watch a Jon Pertwee story, I just cannot do it when watching a 2015 episode.

I agree, it is "off". It's more than one thing though. It's partly Capaldi (casting mistake in my opinion), and partly the writing. I've seen the first 4 episodes and was actually bored with some of it. The pace of the story seems to drag, they're recycling old ideas, and there's nothing there to get you invested in the characters...they seem 2-dimensional.

Update: Saw a couple more episodes. It's just not hitting the mark and doesn't bode well for the future of the show in my opinion.

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff...

....I miss David Tennant....

I cannot warm up to Capaldi. Whenever he does over the top, dramatic monologues I can see him acting. I am sure that he is a good actor otherwise but the Doctor he is not. He is an actor flailing and shouting and that really pulls me out of the scene.

Probably best to miss tonight's episode then, Moriath, as it's almost a solo performance!

I agree with all those who just can't cope with this Doctor. I find him depressing.

I actually watched it with my flatmates who are still fans. I was cackling at the ridiculous score. This was one of the most boring, contrived episodes I have ever watched.

Capaldi has grown on me a bit but not like the other doctors have and he has had a lot further to come to be likeable. I agree that this season has been a bit better, but it seems like every other episode or so is hit or miss.

The solo episode with Capaldi from Saturday though was an abomination... so boring. I had trouble paying attention.

I'm hoping the next companion shakes things up a bit.

That said I've really enjoyed the recurrence of Maisie Willaims. her character is a really interesting to me.

Re: The new Doctor Who v.5 (spoilers for season 8)

I've got the last 2 discs for season 9 coming via Netflix, not sure that my opinion will change regarding Capaldi. And in possibly another bad turn, Moffat is leaving the show after season 10 (to be replaced by Chris Chibnall), not sure if that's the writing on the wall for the series or what. I do believe I won't be able to tolerate another season of Capaldi unless an acting miracle occurs. Maybe I'll just watch reruns starting with Christopher Eccleston, through Matt Smith, until 2018.

OK, now there's an announcement that the next Doctor will be a woman, portrayed by Jodie Whittaker. Not sure that's going to be a successful formula, but considering how much I disliked Capaldi's handling of the character, this can't be all bad...can it? I just don't know anymore.

Cue Twitter outrage and angry letters to the Daily Mail.
