And therefore they are not related.
But every theory is a good theory, until there is a better theory.

Re: Why do some people become ghosts and others don't?

Perhaps it is a combination of Hocruxes and Unicorn blood? Like by killing someone, and making half of your soul immortal or something weird like that, so that it becomes an imprint

Some chose to come back as a ghost. Nick admitted that he was afraid to continue onto the afterlife if there is one.

Nick was afraid of death.....but I don't see Harry returning as a ghost, the flesh will die, but the soul will remain, forever!

You could be on the right path in explaining so called ‘Vapourmort’, in Voldermort being somewhat of a ghost. Could you elaborate some more on this.

Is what you mean that Voldermorts 'ghost' or inprint was bound to earth to the hocruxes. While 'real' ghost hang arround because it's their choice during or shortly after death.

How to become a ghost

I looked and looked and I coudnt find anything like this, but if there is, sorry.

Here is my theory on how ghosts in Harry Potter become:

Maybe, in my opinion, that if you are brutally murdered or died suddenly or your death was horrific, you might come back as a ghost.
For Example: Nearly Headless Nick was hit with a " blunt" axe a lot of times, and Moaning Myrtle was killed by the basilisk. Maybe just maybe, that if you die tragically, you become a ghost?!?!
Just my thought.
Please DIscuss.

Re: How to become a ghost

Why can some ghosts manipulate objects in the real world, whereas others cannot?

What is the difference beteen Peeves and the 'other' Hogwarts ghosts?

If this is what you mean then the probable answer is that Peeves is not a ghost but concentrated energie (not a person that once lived) and therefore has other qualities. Which means that he can 'move' objects which Hogwarts ghosts can not.

Edit: It is better to quote JKR. Thank you dasfres and InsaneKira.

A quote from JKR's website:

JKR: "Peeves isn't a ghost; he was never a living person. He is an indestructible spirit of chaos, and solid enough to unscrew chandeliers, throw walking sticks and, yes, chew gum."

Re: Questions about Ghosts

Peeves is a poltergeist, meaning he can manipulate objects. However some hogwarts ghosts can too, seemingly blurring the line of difference in this story.

Re: Questions about Ghosts

I don't think that the theory "Anyone who is afraid of death becomes a ghost", because then there would be thousands and thousands of ghosts roaming around Hogwarts. So many people are afraid of death, it doesn't make sense that there are only a handful.
I like the idea of it being a matter of choice...
