Re: Oscars 2010

Well, regardless of what the criteria is...I think it's stupid that HP always gets overlooked simply on principle. The LotR trilogy are only fantasy films ever even nominated, right? And even those were snubbed for acting. Well, at least HBP might do well in technical.

That AwardsDaily site has Half-Blood Prince listed as a contender for the following-
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Art Direction
  • Best Sound Mixing
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Visual Effects
  • Best Makeup

I'd say it's probably the biggest contender for Best Cinematography...that's the one it really deserves a win for.

BTW, is Best Art Direction what would have Stuart Craig's name attached to it or is that a different category all together? I thought there was like a Best Set Design award...but I don't see it listed there. Oh well, I personally didn't care for the sets in HBP much anyways...

The old scheme was sufficiently complicated that articles had problems describing it when they were talking about the new scheme! I am not sure how it worked. However, Academy members got to choose multiple films from the nomination ballot. The simplest scheme would be to have some inverse weighting: maximum points for #1 votes, second most points for #2 votes, etc.

Instead, they scheme had something to do with numbers of #1 votes. If I remember correctly, then a film that was #2 on every ballot was not nominated for best picture even though such a film would probably have led in weighted points. The descriptions made it sound as if it was pretty meaningless as to what the #2-#X rankings were. (I probably am mistaken about some detail here, but descriptions of the old nomination process were contradictory.)

I think (but I'm not positive) that the new scheme basically uses a weighted sum. Supposedly this, coupled with the expanded nominations, will help make sure that popular films get nominated. This, in turn, supposedly will get more people to watch the broadcast, as there is supposed to be a correlation between Oscar ratings and the popularity of the best-picture nominations. (Ratings were excellent, at least by modern standards, when Titanic won, and the years when the Rings films were nominated.)

Personally, I find the Golden Tomato to be a more intuitive award: but, then, I would, wouldn't I?

Re: Oscars 2010

The Globes were just announced, the BP nominees being...

Up in the Air
Avatar
Precious
Inglourious Basterds
The Hurt Locker

(especially) With ten oscar nominees, we can pretty much expect these as a lock for oscar noms.

...And the Musical-Comedy nominees are: 500 Days of Summer, The Hangover, It's Complicated, Julie & Julia, and Nine ('though the only one of these that has a chance at an Oscar nod is Nine).

I'd say 500 Days of Summer has a chance, too.

Re: Oscars 2010

Yeah the Golden Globes are showing already the path to Oscars

Oscar Noms:
Best Movie: Avatar and Inglorious Basters
Best Director: Tarantino and Cameron
Best Actress: Meryl Streep (again? She is definitely one of the best ever, I love Meryl Streep)
Thats for sure...

By the way
And our two DADA teachers (Brendan Gleeson and Kenneth Branagh) are facing each other again as Best Actor (TV movie/serie) this time on the Golden Globes 2010

Glee should win too.

Re: Oscars 2010

This article says that avatar is actually a frontrunner for best picture. That really surprised me because the academy usually doesn't give awards to sci fi films unless it's for technological achievements. I'll be surprised if avatar actually wins.

Re: Oscars 2010

Just like they should have nominated Andy Serkis in LOTR (depending on how much was animated), an argument could be made for Zoe Saldana. She's getting a little attention too:

http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2009/...na_for_bes.php
http://www.moviecitynews.com/columni...ar/091230.html
http://www.awardsdaily.com/?p=17342

Not going to happen though.

Avatar, Up in the Air, Hurt Locker, Precious, Invictus, Inglourious Basterds and An Education are locked in, with A Serious Man and Up pretty likely.

The last spot is a wild card.

The BP winner is probably between Avatar, Up in the Air, Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds.

Re: Oscars 2010

I don´t think Avatar is going to win best picture, but it´s definitely going to be nominated

they want the public to be happy because last year Batman didn´t make the cut and everone was really upset

Re: Oscars 2010

Having seen many more of the contenders since my last post, here are now my picks-

Best Picture - The Hurt Locker

Best Director - Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker

Best Actor in a Leading Role - Morgan Freeman, Invictus

Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Jim Broadbent, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Best Actress in a Leading Role - Zooey Deschanel, (500) Days of Summer

Best Actress in a Supporting Role - Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air

Best Cinematography - Bruno Delbonnel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Best Visual Effects - Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Best Original Screenplay - (500) Days of Summer

Best Adapted Screenplay - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Best Original Score - Sherlock Holmes

Best Film Editing - The Hurt Locker

P.S. The Hurt Locker won Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards, so while I'm not sure if/how that will translate for the Oscars...I think there is a good chance. If it doesn't win, my 2nd choice is Up in the Air

Re: Oscars 2010

The Golden Globes are coming up pretty soon I think. Avatar seems to be more of a frontrunner there than for other awards though, so it might only be telling if it loses it - if it wins it, then it doesn't change the race much. I'd put Hurt Locker in front for the Oscars.

And it seems pretty unlikely now that HBP will get a nomination anywhere, which is unfortunate. All I want is a cinematography nod...

Tonight.

I would probably say The Hurt Locker too, but it's between that and Up in the Air.

I would love to see Bruno Delbonnel (director of photography) and Stuart Craig (production designer) get nominations, they're very deserving. Both are unlikely, though.

Yes, I realize that but if I had my way one of the 3 (Michael Gambon, Jim Broadbent, or Alan Rickman) would be nominated at least...I'm still having a hard time deciding between them who was best Also, I don't see why it doesn't have a shot at Best Adapted Screenplay either. What else is there besides like Fantastic Mr. Fox? HBP is much better, IMO. Oh, and what is wrong with the score? I don't think it's deserving, but not even eligible?! If any, it's most def deserving for cinematography, but it seems freaking Avatar is stealing that...

Either is fine with me. Both are very good films

Along with Half-Blood Prince they rank in my Top 3 for '09. I'll be happy just as long as Avatar doesn't win...that would be a travesty.

P.S. Wouldn't mind seeing (500) Days of Summer win either, but I think that's unlikely... I doubt it'll even get a nom, but it should, IMO

I hope Precious doesn't win. Others like it, but I didn't like the trailer. Must be a bad movie.

Er, I don't think I should answer that

It doesn't belong here anyways My pre-conceived notions about Avatar have been made clear elsewhere, so yeah...take 'em or leave 'em

So what are likely to be the 10 nominees for Best Picture and how often do the Oscars follow with the same selections as the Golden Globes?

Have there been discernible patterns over the years? I'm tempted to look up how many years the same film won Best Picture for each...
