What if Harry & Hermione would have been dancing to another song?

Re: What if Harry & Hermione would have been dancing to another song?
Just youtubed that scene and listened to it with the following other songs (to make sure my opinion isn't based on just one song):
We Are Young - Pat Benetar Love Song for No One - John Mayer Mad World - Adam Lambert Show Me What I'm Looking For - Carolina Liars I Won't Let Go - Rascal Flatts (which is probably the closest in tempo to the song in the film) Stop Cryin' your Heat Out - Oasis My verdict: It makes no difference. The scene is awkward and is slanted too obviously in a H/Hr shippy way for a simply fix-it like changing the music to make enough of a difference for me to change my opinion about the scene. Interestingly enough, though, I did like I Won't Let Go better for that scene than the film's song since it's about someone picking up the one they love and telling them that no matter what happens I'll help you fight this fight, I won't let you fall, I know life can suck but I'll be there for you to help you through the tough times which seems verying fitting for both characters: Hermione is helping Harry fight against Voldemort and Harry is comforting Hermione after losing Ron. The scene still sucks though. ![]()

Goddess_Clio,
I can't agree with you. I think another song makes us perceive this scene differently. Here is some more example with Call me maybe... or She wolf. IMO, it's an excellent scene. It shows us that whatever happens to us, however bad your life is, don't give up! Don't be so serious, in fact, it's just a joke! ![]() |

I agree that a different song makes you perceive the scene differently; as I said in my post I like I Won't Let Go better for the scene because to me it says more about Harry and Hermione's friendship than the song they chose which I have a hard time understanding (not only in meaning but because I find the song to be somewhat toneless and think the singers mumble their way through the lyrics so I can't understand what they're saying). At the same time, though, I Won't Let Go is pretty obviously an American country song which would never have been allowed in a British movie, especially a Harry Potter movie. I disagree that the dance scene is an "excellent scene." The meaning of the scene aside (I agree with your assessment of its meaning), I find it uncomfortable, I don't like that the actors were directed to end the scene by making viewer wonder if they would kiss and I think it's funny that so many people who complain about the movies not sticking to canon, adding too much or not including great scenes from the book inexplicably love this scene which is neither in the books, in character for Harry or Hermione or could have been tweaked in a few places so that it would not be so objectionable to the viewers who hate it. I'll stop there because there is a whole thread dedicated to discussing whether people like or dislike this scene. All I'll say is that in my opinion the scene is terrible whether the music in it is changed or not.

The only appropriate song for this horrible scene would be an old song I heard, can't tell you who it's by, and I think it's called "It's Only Make-Believe"! |
