Re: The Official NHL (National Hockey League) Thread

I'll still be rooting for Minnesota. I guess I wouldn't mind too much if a Canadian team won it, but I'd prefer Minnesota since they're an American team. Who I ultimately root for will depend on who makes it to the Stanley Cup finals. Minnesota is my first choice. (assuming Chicago doesn't make the playoffs)

I just don't want it to go to a city in the southern United States again. I was so mad when Anaheim won it last year. I would be surprised if more than 10% of the people in southern California have even seen a hockey game before, or know that the Ducks won last year. It just seems like a waste, when it could have gone to a city where the fanbase is passionate about the sport and knows what winning the Stanley Cup means. That's why I want to see Minnesota win. They're in an American city but when it comes to hockey, Minneapolis/St. Paul might as well be in Canada, and you can't really say that about any other major city in the United States. Maybe Detroit, but even in Michigan most of the hockey fans tend to be in the northern part of the state. Boston is another possibility, but they're more of a baseball city than a hockey city.

Re: The Official NHL (National Hockey League) Thread

Well we were pretty angry when Tampa took the cup considering how many people there had no idea what the Stanley Cup was. You should see the support for the teams up here during the playoff runs, the way people came out for the '04 run was amazing: The Red Mile, the 'C of Red', Flames paraphernalia everywhere, etc. People kept saying that it was better for Anaheim to win the cup last year as there were more Canadians on the Ducks, but it's really not the same.

I'm hoping for a Flames/Wild matchup in the first round, as the Flames have done well against them so far this season. But the way the games are coming out it's hard to say where any team but Detroit and perhaps Dallas are going to finish in the West standings.

Re: The Official NHL (National Hockey League) Thread

What is your favourite team?
Toronto Maple Leafs

Who are You Rooting For this season?
Toronto Maple Leafs for the West; Vancouver Canucks for the East.

Who will win the Stanley Cup?
It seems like it will be another year for Detroit, but I can also see Montreal or Pittsburgh pulling it off.
I could actually see Washington getting the cup if they can reach the playoffs, especially now that they acquired Huet.

Who is your favourtie player?
Ever: Pavel Bure
Now: Vesa Toskala

What team needs major recruiting/changes the most?
L.A. needs it the most, but I would like the Leafs to go through it... We are doing better without our two top scorers (Sundin & Antropov) and better with all these minor league players on our team. I'm not a fan of our All Star defence player, Kaberle, and with the best accuracy shot, I don't see what he's doing as defence.

What is your favourite position?
I like the forwards, but the goalie is by far the most important.

So far the only teams that have been officially eliminated from the playoffs are Atlanta, Tampa, and Los Angeles, but I'm sure the Islanders, Blues, Blue Jackets, and Coyotes will be there soon. Teams I'd like to see win it are Montreal, Anaheim, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, or if they can manage to pull off the miracle - Toronto. I do not want to see Ottawa (Ontario Rivals) win, but I'm not too worried about that with how horribly they've been doing the second half of the season, despite their top players.

Re: The Official NHL (National Hockey League) Thread

The playoff picture is starting to clear up a bit more (with a few more teams being officially eliminated), but it's also getting really interesting for the battles shaping up for 8th in both conferences. In the Northwest Division, currently 4 out of 5 teams are in a playoff position within 5 points of each other and the Oilers are sitting just 3 points behind the Avs for last place. Should be a really good stretch drive.

Been seeing the highlights from Chicago and it's great to see that many fans back out and supporting the team! The Hawks seem to be putting on a good last push and giving their fans quite the show.

The Caps are 2 points out of 8th place, 5 behind Carolina in the division. We're 7-3 in our last 10 games and we play Carolina twice before the end of the year.

Big Hawks fan here. This is the first time in a very long time that we've had something to get excited about. Unfortunately I think this last push is going to end up being too little too late, but I'm just excited that they have a shot at it. And to see such tight races in both divisions is really exciting. No matter what happens, the last two weeks of the season are going to be really exciting.

Re: The Official NHL (National Hockey League) Thread

Wow, some playoff type hockey games being played recently around the league. So many teams fighting for their lives. I can barely keep track of where each team is! It's almost a fulltime job keeping track of all the scores.
The Saddledome here has been getting pretty loud. Iggy got MVP chants on Saturday (directed at all the sports writers out east), and after tonights comeback win against the Canucks the place was insane. I can't wait for this Saturdays matchup against the Oilers.

Too true, since '04-'05 things haven't really been the same between the Flames and the Canucks. I hate them as much as I hate the oilers.

That is very good to see, I noticed the arena was a bit sparse during the season. It's nice to have original six teams playing for excited fans. Hopefully management will be able to build upon the young core.

I haven't had the chance to make it to any games this season, but I have noticed that United Center has had a lot fewer empty seats over the last few weeks.

They've got a lot of young talent, so hopefully the Blackhawks will be part of the playoff picture in years to come. Hopefully management won't trade it all away. I like all of their young guys, but that Patrick Kane is something special. He's got a nice NHL career ahead of him.

I can proudly say I have NEVER cheered for the Oilers in my life. I know it was supposed to be a whole 'bring the cup back to Canada' thing, but as a Flames fan I just couldn't do it. It went against every moral fibre in my body. When they lost I let out a not so secret cry of joy. I've got friends that are die-hard Oilers and Canuck fans and it gets pretty intense between all of us.

Playoffs in less than 2 weeks! Still don't know who is playing who yet, or who is in and who is out. It might actually come down to the final game of the season for some teams.

The NHL has made some good promos for the playoffs this year: The Cup changes everything. All viewable on the website and really good commercials that suit the intensity of the playoff drive.

Re: The Official NHL (National Hockey League) Thread

Before Fridays matchups:
Detroit is first in the west and has clinched the Central Division with 108pts
Sharks (102pts) and Ducks (96pts) have also clinched playoff spots in the west.
No team has clinched the east title as of yet, however the Pens (97pts) and the Habs (96pts) have spots for the playoffs.

The picture should be much clearer after this weekend with a few more teams being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.
Teams eliminated so far:
East-Lightning, Thrashers, Islanders and Leafs
West-Blues and Kings

Re: The Official NHL (National Hockey League) Thread

Disappointing weekend of games played by the Flames, I had a lot of hope following tuesdays comeback.

Standings updates:

2 more teams in the west have clinched playoff berths: Wild and Stars. The Sharks have also clinched the Pacific Division.
The last 3 positions are currently occupied by NW teams: Avs(6), Flames(7) and Canucks (8).
Still only 2 teams in the East with guaranteed berths. Not overly familiar with the East, but it looks like the only team that could pose a threat to teams sitting in the top 8 is Washington. The Caps are 3points behind Philadelphia(8) and 2points behind Carolina(3).

Re: The Official NHL (National Hockey League) Thread

I'm more disappointed in how they played. Seriously millions of dollars a season and you can't show up for a sixty minute game?! They really need to sort out their work ethic if they want to even make the playoffs at this point, the Oilers and the Predators have made up a lot of ground on the Flames. So here's to 3 strong games on the road.
