...

Perhaps, JKR changed her mind once she saw the movies but it seems as if the movies do an accurate representation of how wizards dress.
i always assumed that the sweaters went -under-the robes? but it was the holidays - like i said, wizard children wear muggle clothing in the holidays and robes during schooltime.

So they'd just wear sweaters and their underwear under the robes?

I'll never understand what is "magical" about school uniforms and academic robes - which is what the young actors wore in the the first two films.

Its magical because its what we imagined them wearing! And what they should wear while at school- Its the power of magic in a uniform! IMO at least!

I don't think they ever got the robes right. Even in PS/SS and COS, they look like just regular academic uniforms.

After watching HBP on Blu-ray yesterday, I really noticed Harry's dress robes while at Slughorn's Christmas party. They looked so wizaredish and magical. THAT is more how I imagined wizarding cloaks.

heh, not unless they enjoyed flashing people!

When you wear robes, you wear normal clothing (trousers, skirts, etc.) underneath them. Think about commencement robes: you can tell if someone is wearing just jeans or cutoffs (which often happens) instead of the usual, more formal wear.

And I have to agree with mrfutterman: there is absolutely nothing magical about robes. Academic or judicial, perhaps: after all, where else do you see people wearing robes other than at school ceremonies and courtrooms? At any rate, my robes are about as mundane as they get. They also are exceedingly uncomfortable, which has a lot to do with why I've worn them only once!

I'd only want to wear a t-shirt and shorts under robes, they seem really warm. Certainly not a maroon jumper, anyhow

Re: Muggle Clothing in HP movies

PoA annoyed me with how messy the uniforms were: loose ties, shirttails hanging out, no blazers or sweaters.

Since I only saw HBP once this may be a false impression, but it seemed like the students were seldom in their school robes or uniforms. My DVD should arrive sometime this week and I'll check.

Yeah, but that's how most teenagers act in terms of their uniforms. Unless it's a posh, private school, then it doesn't matter that much how the uniforms are presented.

That's what I've always thought. Even for more formal wizarding wear - like what the Malfoys would wear - I assumed had a shirt, pants, or a skirt underneath.

Yup. I went to both a Catholic grammar school and high school and it was rare to see someone who didn't add their own flair to the uniform and rarer still to see people who alway had their shirts tucked in/ties straight/sweater buttoned/socks pulled up.
